Chiral Electrokinetic Phenomena in Single Nanopores

Abstract The arrangement of solvent molecules and ions at solid–liquid interfaces determines electrochemical properties that are important in separations platforms, sensing technologies, and energy‐storage systems. Here we show that single glass and polymer pores in contact with propylene carbonate (PC) solutions of LiClO 4 exhibit an effective surface potential that is modulated by the enantiomeric excess of the solvent. In particular, electrochemical and electrokinetic measurements of ionic transport through glass pipettes and polymer pores reveal that the effective surface potential is significantly lower in solutions prepared using enantiomerically pure PC than in solutions prepared using racemic PC. Both pore systems became positively charged in all racemic solutions examined in the range of LiClO 4 concentrations between 1 mM and 100 mM, whereas solutions in ( R )‐(+)‐PC induced a positive surface potential only at concentrations above ~5 mM. The effective surface potential is quantified through asymmetry in current–voltage curves and zeta‐potential measurements. Vibrational sum‐frequency‐generation experiments on LiClO 4 solutions in racemic and enantiomerically pure PC indicate that the surface lipid‐bilayer‐like region in the former is more strongly organized than in the latter, dictating the favorable positions for lithium and perchlorate ions in each case. The more ordered molecular packing in the racemic liquid leads to accumulation of lithium ions on the outside of the bilayer, creating a higher effective positive charge. Our results highlight the extreme sensitivity of the interfacial potential on molecular organization of the solvent, and the relatively unexplored role that chirality can play in electrokinetic phenomena.

Crystalline Supramolecular Polymers: Dynamics, Chirality, and Function

Inspired by biological systems, supramolecular polymers have emerged over the past three decades as an important way to form functional structures with potential to tune the internal order and dynamics and to create materials with the potential for responsiveness, reconfigurability, and recyclability. We focus here on several recent examples of ordered supramolecular polymers with a significant extent of internal order that results in crystalline molecular packing, or with dynamics that allow them to undergo structural reconfiguration. These examples highlight the spectrum of molecular mobility that the noncovalently bound constituents can experience. Furthermore, these materials have found interesting functions in their interaction with chiral biological systems and in their ability to form materials with interesting optoelectronic and photocatalytic behavior.

BaCu 2 SiS 4 : A New Member of the A II B I 2 M IV Q 4 Chalcogenide Family with a Chiral Crystal Structure

Abstract Noncentrosymmetric ternary and quaternary chalcogenides are studied as promising nonlinear optical (NLO) materials in the mid‐infrared region. Here, we report the synthesis of a new material BaCu 2 SiS 4 in the A II B I 2 M IV Q 4 family ( A =divalent metal; B =monovalent metal; M =tetrel, Q =chalcogen), and discuss its crystal structure, thermal stability, optical behavior, and electronic structure. BaCu 2 SiS 4 crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric chiral space group P 3 2 21 with lattice parameters a =6.1440(3) Å, c =15.3542(8) Å, V =501.95(6) Å 3 , Z =3. The structure features helical channels formed by corner‐sharing [CuS 4 ] and [SiS 4 ] tetrahedral units. Synthesis was carried out in a molten salt flux, as opposed to a traditional solid‐state route from elements, to minimize the formation of a competing ternary phase, Ba 2 SiS 4 . BaCu 2 SiS 4 is a semiconductor with an experimentally‐determined direct bandgap of ~2.2 eV. The material exhibits second harmonic generation (SHG) activity, confirming the noncentrosymmetric nature of the structure. Analysis of reported A II B I 2 M IV Q 4 crystal structures pointed out a correlation among potential structure types and the radii of the constituent elements. Total energy calculations were carried out to explore the relative stability of several reported crystal structures in this family of compounds.

Phases of confining SU(5) chiral gauge theory with three generations

We explore the possible low energy phases of the confining non-supersymmetric SU(5) chiral gauge theory with three generations of fermions in the (10+ $\bar{5}$) representations. This theory has the same fermion and gauge matter content as the simplest Georgi-Glashow grand unified theory of the Standard Model and has an SU(3) × SU(3) × U(1) global symmetry. Using ’t Hooft anomaly matching, most attractive channel, and soft SUSY breaking approaches, we outline a number of possible consistent low energy vacua including one with a remnant SO(3) × U(1) symmetry that is analogous to the one-generation model. For the soft SUSY breaking approach, we find that as one extrapolates to large SUSY breaking to recover the original theory, a phase transition is possible. We show that such a phase transition is guaranteed if SUSY breaking is communicated via anomaly mediation.

Chiral hydrodynamics in strong external magnetic fields

We construct the general hydrodynamic description of (3+1)-dimensional chiral charged (quantum) fluids subject to a strong external magnetic field with effective field theory methods. We determine the constitutive equations for the energy-momentum tensor and the axial charge current, in part from a generating functional. Furthermore, we derive the Kubo formulas which relate two-point functions of the energy-momentum tensor and charge current to 27 transport coefficients: 8 independent thermodynamic, 4 independent non-dissipative hydrodynamic, and 10 independent dissipative hydrodynamic transport coefficients. Five Onsager relations render 5 more transport coefficients dependent. We uncover four novel transport effects, which are encoded in what we call the shear-induced conductivity, the two expansion-induced longitudinal conductivities and the shear-induced Hall conductivity. Remarkably, the shear-induced Hall conductivity constitutes a novel non-dissipative transport effect. As a demonstration, we compute all transport coefficients explicitly in a strongly coupled quantum fluid via holography.

An SU(5) × U(1)' SUSY GUT with a “vector-like chiral” fourth family to fit all low energy data, including the muon g – 2

An additional generation of quarks and leptons and their SUSY counterparts, which are vector-like under the Standard Model gauge group but are chiral with respect to the new U(1) 3–4 gauge symmetry, are added to the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We show that this model is a GUT and unifies the three SM gauge couplings and also the additional U(1) 3–4 coupling at a GUT scale of ≈ 5 × 10 16 GeV and explains the experimentally observed deviation of the muon g – 2. We also fit the quark flavor changing processes consistent with the latest experimental data and look at the effect of the new particles on the W boson mass without obviously conflicting with the observed masses of particles, CKM matrix elements, neutrino mixing angles, their mass differences, and the lepton-flavor violating bounds. This model predicts sparticle masses less than 25 TeV, with a gluino mass ≈ 2.3 – 3 TeV consistent with constraints, and one of the neutralinos as the LSP with a mass of ≈ 480 – 580 GeV, which is a potential dark matter candidate. The model is string theory motivated and predicts the VL quarks, leptons, a massive Z' and two Dirac neutrinos at the TeV scale and the branching ratios of μ → eγ, τ → μγ and τ → 3μ with BR(μ → eγ) within reach of future experiments.

Electroweak-like baryogenesis with new chiral matter

We propose a framework where a phase transition associated with a gauge symmetry breaking that occurs (not far) above the electroweak scale sets a stage for baryogenesis similar to the electroweak baryogenesis in the Standard Model. A concrete realization utilizes the breaking of SU(2) R × U(1) X → U(1) Y . New chiral fermions charged under the extended gauge symmetry have nonzero lepton numbers, which makes the B - L symmetry anomalous. The new lepton sector contains a large flavor-dependent CP violation, similar to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa phase, without inducing sizable electric dipole moments of the Standard Model particles. A bubble wall dynamics associated with the first-order phase transition and SU(2) R sphaleron processes generate a lepton asymmetry, which is transferred into a baryon asymmetry via the ordinary electroweak sphaleron process. Unlike the Standard Model electroweak baryogenesis, the new phase transition can be of the strong first order and the new CP violation is not significantly suppressed by Yukawa couplings, so that the observed asymmetry can be produced. The model can be probed by collider searches for new particles and the observation of gravitational waves. One of the new leptons becomes a dark matter candidate. The model can be also embedded into a left-right symmetric theory to solve the strong CP problem.

Constraining the Chiral Magnetic Effect with charge-dependent azimuthal correlations in Pb-Pb collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $ = 2.76 and 5.02 TeV

Systematic studies of charge-dependent two- and three-particle correlations in Pb-Pb collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $ = 2.76 and 5.02 TeV used to probe the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) are presented. These measurements are performed for charged particles in the pseudorapidity ( η ) and transverse momentum ( p T ) ranges | η | < 0 . 8 and 0 . 2 < p T < 5 GeV/ c . A significant charge-dependent signal that becomes more pronounced for peripheral collisions is reported for the CME-sensitive correlators γ 1, 1 =$\langle4cos( φ α + φ β - 2Ψ 2 )$\rangle$ and γ 1, - 3 = $\langle$cos( φ α - 3 φ β + 2Ψ 2 )$\rangle$. The results are used to estimate the contribution of background effects, associated with local charge conservation coupled to anisotropic flow modulations, to measurements of the CME. A blast-wave parametrisation that incorporates local charge conservation tuned to reproduce the centrality dependent background effects is not able to fully describe the measured γ 1 , 1 . Finally, the charge and centrality dependence of mixed-harmonics three-particle correlations, of the form γ 1, 2 = $\langle$cos( φ α + 2 φ β - 3Ψ 3 )$\rangle$, which are insensitive to the CME signal, verify again that background contributions dominate the measurement of γ 1 , 1 .

Probing the chiral magnetic wave with charge-dependent flow measurements in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC

The Chiral Magnetic Wave (CMW) phenomenon is essential to provide insights into the strong interaction in QCD, the properties of the quark-gluon plasma, and the topological characteristics of the early universe, offering a deeper understanding of fundamental physics in high-energy collisions. Measurements of the charge-dependent anisotropic flow coefficients are studied in Pb-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV to probe the CMW. In particular, the slope of the normalized difference in elliptic (v 2 ) and triangular (v 3 ) flow coefficients of positively and negatively charged particles as a function of their event-wise normalized number difference, is reported for inclusive and identified particles. The slope ${r}_3^{\textrm{Norm}}$ is found to be larger than zero and to have a magnitude similar to ${r}_2^{\textrm{Norm}}$, thus pointing to a large background contribution for these measurements. Furthermore, ${r}_2^{\textrm{Norm}}$ can be described by a blast wave model calculation that incorporates local charge conservation. In addition, using the event shape engineering technique yields a fraction of CMW (f CMW ) contribution to this measurement which is compatible with zero. This measurement provides the very first upper limit for f CMW , and in the 10–60% centrality interval it is found to be 26% (38%) at 95% (99.7%) confidence level.

The BEST framework for the search for the QCD critical point and the chiral magnetic effect

The Beam Energy Scan Theory (BEST) Collaboration was formed with the goal of providing a theoretical framework for analyzing data from the Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at the relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The physics goal of the BES program is the search for a conjectured QCD critical point as well as for manifestations of the chiral magnetic effect. We describe progress that has been made over the previous five years. This includes studies of the equation of state and equilibrium susceptibilities, the development of suitable initial state models, progress in constructing a hydrodynamic framework that includes fluctuations and anomalous transport effects, as well as the development of freezeout prescriptions and hadronic transport models. Lastly, we address the challenge of integrating these components into a complete analysis framework. This document describes the collective effort of the BEST Collaboration and its collaborators around the world.

Search for the Chiral Magnetic Effect with charge-dependent azimuthal correlations in Xe–Xe collisions at s NN = 5.44 TeV

Charge-dependent two- and three-particle correlations measured in Xe–Xe collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = TeV are presented. Results are obtained for charged particles in the pseudorapidity range |η| and transverse momentum interval 02. ≤ p T < GeV/c for different collision centralities. The three-particle correlator γ αβ ≡ $\langle$cos(φ α + φ β - 2Ψ a )$\rangle$, calculated for different combinations of charge sign α and β, is expected to be sensitive to the presence of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME). Its magnitude is similar to the one observed in Pb–Pb collisions in contrast to a smaller CME signal in Xe–Xe collisions than in Pb–Pb collisions predicted by Monte Carlo (MC) calculations including a magnetic field induced by the spectator protons. These observations point to a large non-CME contribution to the correlator. Furthermore, the charge dependence of γ αβ can be described by a blast wave model calculation that incorporates background effects and by the Anomalous Viscous Fluid Dynamics model with values of the CME signal consistent with zero. The Xe–Xe and Pb–Pb results are combined with the expected CME signal dependence on the system size from the MC calculations including a magnetic field to obtain the fraction of CME contribution in γ αβ , $f$ CME . The CME fraction is compatible with zero for the 30% most central events in both systems and then becomes positive. This yields an upper limit of 2% (3%) and 25% (32%) at 95% (99.7%) confidence level for the CME signal contribution to γ αβ in the 0–70% Xe–Xe and Pb–Pb collisions, respectively.

Ab initio informed 20 Ne(p, pα) 16 O reaction elucidates the emergence of alpha clustering from chiral potentials

We report on the first ab initio informed α knock-out reaction in the intermediate-mass region, with the aim to probe the underlying chiral potential and its impact on the emergence of alpha clustering in this mass region. The theoretical predictions of the α+ 16 O clustering in the 20 Ne ground state, based on the ab initio symmetry-adapted no-core shell model with continuum, yield a triple differential cross section for 20 Ne(p, pα) 16 O that is in a remarkable agreement with the data. This allows us to examine predictions of surface and in-medium α-cluster features that emerge from the underlying realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction with no parameters fitted to nuclear data beyond the two-body system, and to compare these to the successful antisymmetrized molecular dynamics approach.

Magnetic Properties and Large Second-Harmonic Generation Response of a Chiral Ternary Chalcogenide: Eu 2 SiSe 4

Eu(II)-containing chalcogenides are an emerging class of materials that are of great interest due to their high optical activity and intriguing magnetism. Here, we synthesized Eu 2 SiSe 4 as red-colored single crystals and characterized its structure with single-crystal X-ray diffraction, confirming the reported chiral monoclinic P2 1 symmetry at room temperature. The crystal structure of Eu 2 SiSe 4 comprises distorted SiSe 4 tetrahedral units and charge-balancing Eu(II) cations. Here, we develop a two-step solid-state synthesis method for Eu 2 SiSe 4 and compare it to the known boron chalcogenide method. We find the second-harmonic generation (SHG) activity of polycrystalline Eu 2 SiSe 4 to be ∼7 × AgGaS 2 , placing it among the highest-known SHG-active chalcogenides. No symmetry lowering is observed down to 100 K in single-crystal X-ray diffraction, although an anomalous expansion in the b-axis lattice parameter occurs and may be correlated to lattice modes of the SiSe 4 tetrahedra. We investigate the physical properties of Eu 2 SiSe 4 using magnetometry and heat capacity measurements and find a transition to an antiferromagnetic ground state at T N ≈ 5.5 K. The low-temperature transition releases less entropy than expected, which may be due to the complex crystal electric field effects of Eu(II).

Origins of Conformational Heterogeneity in Peptoid Helices Formed by Chiral N -1-Phenylethyl Sidechains

N-substituted glycines (polypeptoids) containing chiral hydrophobic sidechains are known to fold into biomimetic alpha helices. These helix formers often produce conformationally heterogeneous structures and are difficult to characterize at a sub-nanometer resolution. Previously, peptoid N-1-phenylethyl (S)-enantiomer sidechains (Nspe) were inferred from various experiments to form right-handed helices and (R)-enantiomers (Nrpe), left-handed helices. Prior computational work for N(s/r)pe oligomers has struggled to reproduce this trend. Herein, quantum mechanics calculations and molecular dynamics simulations are used to understand the origins of this discrepancy. Results from DFT and molecular mechanics calculations on a variety of Nspe and Nrpe oligomers as a function of chain length are in agreement, showing that Nspe and Nrpe prefer left- and right-handed helices, respectively. Additional metadynamics simulations are used to study Nrpe and Nspe oligomers folding in water. These results show that the free-energy driving forces for assembly into a helical backbone configuration are very small (within ~k B T). Lastly, we compare DFT calculations for other experimentally characterized peptoid sidechains, N(r/s)sb, N(r/s)tbe, and N(r/s)npe. In this analysis, we show that peptoid sidechains determined to be more robust experimentally (tbe and npe) have helical preferences opposite the trend seen in less robust assemblies formed by N(r/s)pe and N(r/s)sb chemistries. Furthermore, the more robust tbe and nnpe favor the (S)-enantiomer to right-handed and the (R)-enantiomers to left-handed helices.

Detection of the Chiral Spin Structure in Ferromagnetic SrRuO 3 Thin Film

SrRuO3 (SRO) thin films and their heterostructure have brought much attention because of the recently demonstrated fascinating properties, such as topological Hall effect and skyrmions. Critical to the understanding of those SRO properties is the study of the spin configuration. Here, we conduct resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS) at the oxygen K-edge to investigate the spin configuration of a 4 unit-cell SRO film that was grown epitaxially on a single crystal SrTiO 3 . The RSXS signal under a magnetic field (~0.4 Tesla) clearly shows a magnetic dichroism pattern around the specular reflection. Model calculations on the RSXS signal demonstrate that the magnetic dichroism pattern originates from a Néel-type chiral spin structure in this SRO thin film. We believe that the observed spin structure of the SRO system is a critical piece of information for understanding its intriguing magnetic and transport properties.

Control of monodomain polymer-stabilized cuboidal nanocrystals of chiral nematics by confinement.

Liquid crystals are important components of optical technologies. Cuboidal crystals consisting of chiral liquid crystals-the so-called blue phases (BPs), are of particular interest due to their crystalline structures and fast response times, but it is critical that control be gained over their phase behavior as well as the underlying dislocations and grain boundaries that arise in such systems. Blue phases exhibit cubic crystalline symmetries with lattice parameters in the 100 nm range and a network of disclination lines that can be polymerized to widen the range of temperatures over which they occur. Here, we introduce the concept of strain-controlled polymerization of BPs under confinement, which enables formation of strain-correlated stabilized morphologies that, under some circumstances, can adopt perfect single-crystal monodomain structures and undergo reversible crystal-to-crystal transformations, even if their disclination lines are polymerized. We have used super-resolution laser confocal microscopy to reveal the periodic structure and the lattice planes of the strain and polymerization stabilized BPs in 3D real space. Our experimental observations are supported and interpreted by relying on theory and computational simulations in terms of a free energy functional for a tensorial order parameter. Simulations are used to determine the orientation of the lattice planes unambiguously. The findings presented here offer opportunities for engineering optical devices based on single-crystal, polymer-stabilized BPs whose inherent liquid nature, fast dynamics, and long-range crystalline order can be fully exploited.

As–Se Pentagonal Linkers to Induce Chirality and Polarity in Mixed-Valent Fe–Se Tetrahedral Chains Resulting in Hidden Magnetic Ordering

A novel mixed-valent hybrid chiral and polar compound, Fe 7 As 3 Se 12 (en) 6 (H 2 O), has been synthesized by a single-step solvothermal method. The crystal structure consists of 1D [Fe 5 Se 9 ] chains connected via [As 3 Se 2 ]–Se pentagonal linkers and charge-balancing interstitial [Fe(en) 3 ] 2+ complexes (en = ethylenediamine). Neutron powder diffraction verified that interstitial water molecules participate in the crystal packing. Magnetic polarizability of the produced compound was confirmed by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy showed the presence of mixed-valent Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ in the Fe–Se chains. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal strong antiferromagnetic nearest neighbor interactions within the chains with no apparent magnetic ordering down to 2 K. Hidden short-range magnetic ordering below 70 K was found by 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, showing that a fraction of the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ in the chains are magnetically ordered. Nevertheless, complete magnetic ordering is not achieved even at 6 K. Analysis of XAS spectra demonstrates that the fraction of Fe 3+ in the chain increases with decreasing temperature. Computational analysis points out several competing ferrimagnetic ordered models within a single chain. Here, this competition, together with variation in the Fe oxidation state and additional weak intrachain interactions, is hypothesized to prevent long-range magnetic ordering.

Direct Observation of Circularly Polarized Nonlinear Optical Activities in Chiral Hybrid Lead Halides

Circularly polarized light emission is a crucial application in imaging, sensing, and photonics. However, utilizing low-energy photons to excite materials, as opposed to high-energy light excitation, can facilitate deep-tissue imaging and sensing applications. The challenge lies in finding materials capable of directly generating circularly polarized nonlinear optical effects. In this study, we introduce a chiral hybrid lead halide (CHLH) material system, R/S-DPEDPb 3 Br 8 ·H 2 O (DPED = 1,2-diphenylethylenediammonium), which can directly produce circularly polarized second harmonic generation (CP-SHG) through linearly polarized infrared light excitation, exhibiting a polarization efficiency as high as 37% at room temperature. To understand the spin relaxation mechanisms behind the high polarization efficiency, we utilized two models, so-called D’yakonov–Perel’ (DP) and Bir–Aronov–Pikus (BAP) mechanisms. The unique zigzag inorganic frameworks within the hybrid structure are believed to reduce the dielectric confinement and exciton binding energy, thus enhancing spin polarization, especially in regions with a high excitation pump fluence based on the DP mechanism. In the case of low excitation pump fluence, the BAP mechanism dominates, as evidenced by the observed decrease in the polarization ratio from CP-SHG measurement. Using density functional theory analysis, we elucidate how the distinctive 8-coordination environment of lead bromide building blocks effectively suppresses spin–orbit coupling at the conduction band minimum. This suppression significantly diminishes spin-splitting, thereby slowing the spin relaxation rate.
