Compatibilities of YBa2Cu3O(9-delta) type phase in quintenary systems Y-Ba-Cu-O-X (impurity)

Isothermal phase diagrams at various oxygen pressures were studied by powder diffraction and chemical analytical methods. The components, Y, Ba, Cu, and O (specifically O2, O2-, and O2 sup 2-) are treated, together with C (specifically CO2 and CO2 sup 2-), alkaline metals, Mg, alkaline earths, Sc, 3-d and 4-f elements. Effects of the substitutions at the structural sites of YBa2Cu3O(9-delta) on T sub c are discussed with respect to changes in crystallochemical characteristics of the substituted phase and to the nature of the substituents.

Crystal growth of YBa2Cu3O(7-x) and reaction of gold crucible with Ba-Cu-rich flux

YBa2Cu3O(7-x) crystals are grown in a gold crucible by a self-flux method. The flux moves along the gold surface due to surface wetting and leaves Y123 crystals behind. The obtained crystals are clean and have a size up to two millimeters and a Tc is greater than 90 K. In an effort to recycle the used crucibles, it is found that the used gold is contaminated by copper. A CuO thin film is easily formed on the surface of the crucible that is made of the used gold. This film provides good surface wetting and a buffer layer, which reduces the reaction between gold and the Y-Ba-Cu-oxide melt.

Growth of Sr(0.61)Ba(0.39)Nb2O6 fibers - New results regarding orientation

The paper describes stable growth of Sr(0.61)Ba(0.39)Nb2O6 (SBN) single-crystal optical fibers (grown by the laser-heated pedestal growth method) along the 100-line and 110-line crystallographic axes. The orientation of SBN fibers was investigated using transmission holograms recorded by focusing two separate, but mutually coherent, optical wavefronts into one end of the fiber. Results showed that the crystal quality of 100-line and 110-line SBN fibers grown at a given pull velocity strongly depended on the fiber diameter; generally, the quality improves with decreasing diameter.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization of a nonsuperconducting Y-Ba-Cu-O superconductor-normal-metal-superconductor barrier material

A film of a novel nonsuperconducting Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) barrier material was grown using conditions similar to those reported by Agostinelli et al. (1991) for forming a cubic semiconducting (c-YBCO) phase, and the material was characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). A comparison of the XPS spectra of this material to those obtained from the orthorhombic and tetragonal phases of YBCO (o-YBCO and t-YBCO, respectively) showed that the barrier material had spectral characteristics different from those of o-YBCO and t-YBCO, particularly in the O 1s region. Features associated with the Cu-O chain and surface-reconstructed Cu-O planes were absent, consistent with expectations for the simple perovskite crystal structure of c-YBCO proposed by Agostinelli et al.

Improvement of persistent magnetic field trapping in bulk Y-Ba-Cu-O superconductors

For type-II superconductors, magnetic field can be trapped due to persistent internal supercurrent. Quasi-persistent magnetic fields near 2 T at 60 K (and 1.4 T at 77 K) have been measured in minimagnets made of proton-irradiated melt-textured Y-Ba-Cu-O (MT-Y123) samples. Using the trapping effect, high-field permanent magnets with dipole, quadrupole, or more complicated configurations can be made of existing MT-Y123 material, thus bypassing the need for high-temperature superconductor (HTS) wires. A phenomenological current model has been developed to account for the trapped field intensity and profile in HTS samples. This model is also a guide to select directions of materials development to further improve field trapping properties. General properties such as magnetic field intensities, spatial distributions, stabilities, and temperature dependence of trapped field are discussed.

Composition variations in pulsed-laser-deposited Y-Ba-Cu-O thin films as a function of deposition parameters

The composition of pulsed-ultraviolet-laser-deposited Y-Ba-Cu-O films was examined as a function of position across the substrate, laser fluence, laser spot size, substrate temperature, target conditioning, oxygen pressure and target-substrate distance. Laser fluence, laser spot size, and substrate temperature were found to have little effect on composition within the range investigated. Ablation from a fresh target surface results in films enriched in copper and barium, both of which decrease in concentration until a steady state condition is achieved. Oxygen pressure and target-substrate distance have a significant effect on film composition. In vacuum, copper and barium are slightly concentrated at the center of deposition. With the introduction of an oxygen background pressure, scattering results in copper and barium depletion in the deposition center, an effect which increases with increasing target-substrate distance. A balancing of these two effects results in stoichiometric deposition.

Partitioning of Nb, Mo, Ba, Ce, Pb, Th and U between immiscible carbonate and silicate liquids: Evaluating the effects of P2O5,F, and carbonate composition

Previously we have reported carbonate liq./silicate liq. partition coefficients (D) for a standard suite of trace elements (Nb, Mo, Ba, Ce, Pb, Th, and U) and Ra and Pa as well. In brief, we have found that immiscible liquid partitioning is a strong function of temperature. As the critical temperature of the carbonate-silicate solvus is approached, all partition coefficients approach unity. Additionally, for the overwhelming majority of the partitioning elements, InD is a linear function of 'ionic field strength,' z/r, where z is the charge of the partitioned cation and r is its ionic radius.

A 10 GHz Y-Ba-Cu-O/GaAs hybrid oscillator proximity coupled to a circular microstrip patch antenna

A 10 GHz hybrid Y-Ba-Cu-O / GaAs microwave oscillator proximity coupled to a circular microstrip antenna was designed, fabricated and characterized. The oscillator was a reflection mode type using a GaAs MESFET as the active element. The feedline, transmission lines, RF chokes, and bias lines were all fabricated from YBa2Cu3O(7-x) superconducting thin films on a 1 cm x 1 cm lanthanum aluminate substrate. The output feedline of the oscillator was wire bonded to a superconducting feedline on a second 1 cm x 1 cm lanthanum aluminate substrate, which was in turn proximity coupled to a circular microstrip patch antenna. Antenna patterns from this active patch antenna and the performance of the oscillator measured at 77 K are reported. The oscillator had a maximum output power of 11.5 dBm at 77 K, which corresponded to an efficiency of 10 percent. In addition, the efficiency of the microstrip patch antenna together with its high temperature superconducting feedline was measured from 85 K to 30 K and was found to be 71 percent at 77 4 increasing to a maximum of 87.4 percent at 30 K.

Electronic properties of Y-Ba-Cu-O superconductors as seen by Cu and O NMR/NQR

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) allow the investigation of electronic properties at the atomic level. We will report on such studies of typical members of the the Y-Ba-Cu-O family such as YBa2Cu30(6 + x) (1-2-3-(6 + x)), YBa2Cu4O8 (1-2-4) and Y2Ba4Cu7015 (2-4-7) with many examples of recent work performed in our laboratory. In particular, we will deal with Knight shift and relaxation studies of copper and oxygen. We will discuss important issues of current studies such as: (1) Existence of a common electronic spin-susceptibility in the planes (and perhaps in the chains) of 1-2-4; (2) Strong evidence for the existence of a pseudo spin-gap of the antiferromagnetic fluctuations in 1-2-4 and 2-4-7; (3) Evidence for d-wave pairing in 1-2-4; (4) Strong coupling of inequivalent Cu-O planes in 2-4-7 and possible origin for the high Tc value of this compound; and (5) The possibility to describe NMR data in the framework of a charge-excitation picture.

Chemical stabilization and high pressure synthesis of Ba-free Hg-based superconductors, (Hg,M)Sr2Ca(n-1)Cu(n)O(y)(n=1 to approximately 3)

A homologous series of new Hg-based HTSC compounds, (Hg,M)Sr2Ca(n - 1)Cu(n)P(y) with n = 1 to 3, have been synthesized. The stabilization of the pure phases have been accomplished by chemical doping of third elements such as M = Cr, Mo and Re. While the Hgl2O1(n = 1) phase was readily obtained in this way, it was necessary to simultaneously dope Y into the Ca site to stabilize the Hg1212(n = 2) phase. On the other hand, single-phase Y-free Hg1212(n = 2) and Hg1223 (n = 3) samples were synthesized only under a high pressure of 6 GPa. In sharp contrast to the Ba containing compounds, all the samples prepared in the present study have been quite stable during the synthesis and no deterioration in air has been observed after the preparation.

Improvement of critical current density in thallium-based (Tl,Bi)Sr(1.6)Ba(0.4)Ca2Cu3O(x) superconductors

Epitaxial (Tl,Bi)Sr(1.6)Ba(0.4)Ca2Cu3O(x) ((Tl,Bi)-1223) thin films on (100) single crystal LaAlO3 substrates were synthesized by a two-step procedure. Phase development, microstructure, and relationships between film and substrate were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Resistance versus temperature, zero-field-cooled and field cooled magnetization, and transport critical current density (J(sub c)) were measured. The zero-resistance temperature was 105-111 K. J(sub c) at 77 K and zero field was greater than 2 x 10(exp 6) A/sq cm. The films exhibited good flux pinning properties.

Development of Y-Ba-Cu-O Superconductors for Magnetic Bearings

The material requirements, material manufacturing and magnetic properties that are relevant to fabrication of High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) magnetic bearings have been discussed. It is found that the seeded-melt-texturing method can be used to fabricate the single domain material that is required to achieve the best magnetic properties. Trapped-field mapping has been used as a non-destructive tool to determine the single-domain nature of the HTS material and quantity of the HTS disks. Both the trapped field and the levitation force of the Y-Ba-Cu-O disks are found to be strongly sensitive to the oxygen content.

Room Temperature Thin Film Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3 Ku-Band Coupled MicrostripPhase Shifters: Effects of Film Thickness, Doping, Annealing and Substrate Choice

We report on measurements taken on over twenty Ku-band coupled microstrip phase shifters (CMPS) using thin ferroelectric films of Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3. This CMPS design is a recent innovation designed to take advantage of the high tunability and tolerate the high dielectric constant of ferroelectric films at Ku- and K-band frequencies. These devices are envisioned as a component in low-cost steerable beam phased area antennas, Comparisons are made between devices with differing film thickness, annealed vs unannealed, Mn-doped vs. undoped, and also substrates of LaAlO3 and MgO. A comparison between the CMPS structure and a CPW phase shifter was also made oil the same ferroelectric film.

Characterization of (Ba(0.5)Sr(0.5)) TiO3 Thin Films for Ku-Band Phase Shifters

The microstructural properties of (Ba(0.5)Sr(0.5)TiO3) (BSTO) thin films (300, 700, and 1400 nm thick) deposited on LaAlO3 (LAO) substrates were characterized using high-resolution x-ray diffractometry. Film crystallinity was the parameter that most directly influenced tunability, and we observed that a) the crystalline quality was highest in the thinnest film and progressively degraded with increasing film thickness; and b) strain at the film/substrate interface was completely relieved via dislocation formation. Paraelectric films such as BSTO offer an attractive means of incorporating low-cost phase shifter circuitry into beam-steerable reflectarray antennas.

Thin Film Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3 Ku- and K-Band Phase Shifters Grown on MgO Substrates

We report measurements of gold circuits fabricated on four Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3 films doped with 1% Mn grown on MgO substrates by laser ablation. Low frequency measurements of epsilon(sub r) and tan(delta) on interdigital capacitors are compared with high frequency measurements of phase shift and insertion loss on coupled microstrip phase shifters done on the same films. The variation in temperature of both high and low frequency device parameters is compared. Annealed and unannealed films are compared. Room temperature figures of merit of phase shift per insertion loss of up to 58.4 C/dB at 18 GHz and 400 V dc bias were measured.

Thin Film Ba(x) Sr(1-x)TiO3 Coupled Microstrip Ku- and K-band Phase Shifters

In this report authors found that the: (1) Best room temperature CMPS performance seen on 1% Mn-doped Ba(0.6)Sr(0.4)TiO3 annealed films on MgO: K = 74 C/dB. Phase Shift/coupled length: 1427 C/cm (2) Attempt to improve phase shifters through thicker as-deposited films stymied by declining film quality with film thickness. Annealing may alleviate this problem. (3) CMPS phase shift at Ku-band didn't experience the great rise in tunability seen in 1 MHz epsilon(sub r)(0) data. (4) While CMPS circuits may be well suited for arrays, simpler circuits like CPW would be more useful for characterizing epsilon(sub r) and tan(delta) at Ku-and K-band. (5) New substrates and designs are being tested.

Life Cycle Testing of Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3 Ferroelectric Thin Films in a Tunable Microwave Device

Thin film ferroelectrics are being studied as candidates for novel tunable microwave components such as tunable filters, tunable oscillators, and phase shifters for applications in phased array antennas. Much work has been done optimizing the ferroelectric material and in producing proof-of-concepts of these components. However, little attention has been given to their reliability. In this study we present our results on the reliability of high quality K-band phase shifters made of Ba(sub x)Sr(sub 1-x)TiO3 (BSTO) ferroelectric thin films (0.5 to 0.75 micrometers thick) on MgO and LAO. The phase shift and insertion loss were measured at 300 K over 104 operation cycles within a 0 to 400 V dc bias range (0 to 40 V/micrometer) at 15, 18, and 22 GHz. Results for these phase shifters indicate that in general there were no appreciable changes in phase shift after 4x10(exp 4) cycles, suggesting that these phase shifters are robust enough to sustain optimal performance under the operating mode typical of fast tracking phased arrays.
