Omega windfinding system designed to meet accuracy requirements of GARP Atlantic Tropical Experiment

Illustrations of high sferics content Omega data are presented and techniques for recovering the true Omega phase data are discussed. A description is given of the design and the operation of the hardware preprocessor developed to extract the true Omega phase data from the received signals. The software developed to compute upper-air winds from high sferics content data is discussed together with the program conducted to establish the validity of the system.

Data report of six free-drifting buoys tracked by the Eole satellite in the western North Atlantic Ocean in the autumn of 1972

The buoys were deployed on the Continental Shelf east of the Chesapeake Light and were tracked by the French EOLE satellite. Two buoys drifted for 11 days during the first mission and four buoys drifted for 14 days during the second mission. Trajectory and water temperature data are presented in tabular and graphical from with a discussion of the accuracy.

Interdisciplinary study of atmospheric processes and constituents of the mid-Atlantic coastal region.

Past research projects for the year 1974-1975 are listed along with future research programs in the area of air pollution control, remote sensor analysis of smoke plumes, the biosphere component, and field experiments. A detailed budget analysis is presented. Attachments are included on the following topics: mapping forest vegetation with ERTS-1 MSS data and automatic data processing techniques, and use of LARS system for the quantitative determination of smoke plume lateral diffusion coefficients from ERTS images of Virginia.

Man-Computer Interactive Data Access System (McIDAS). Continued development of McIDAS and operation in the GARP Atlantic tropical experiment

The complete output of the Synchronous Meteorological Satellite was recorded on one inch magnetic tape. A quality control subsystem tests cloud track vectors against four sets of criteria: (1) rejection if best match occurs on correlation boundary; (2) rejection if major correlation peak is not distinct and significantly greater than secondary peak; (3) rejection if correlation is not persistent; and (4) rejection if acceleration is too great. A cloud height program determines cloud optical thickness from visible data and computer infrared emissivity. From infrared data and temperature profile, cloud height is determined. A functional description and electronic schematics of equipment are given.

The French Atlantic Littoral and the Massif Armoricain

The author has identified the following significant results. Diachronic use of LANDSAT data time series will in time allow study of statistically submerged frequencies in tidal areas. This is an essential element of coastal geomorphology and of coastal zone management, being particularly useful in siting shellfish farms. Maps at useable scales and simple user oriented legends should become an essential document for coastal planning agencies.

The French Atlantic Littoral and the Massif Armoricain

The author has identified the following significant results. Diachronic use of LANDSAT data time series will in time allow statistical study of submersion frequencies in tidal areas. This is an essential element of coastal geomorphology and of coastal zone management being particularly useful in siting shellfish farms. Maps are being obtained at useable scales and simple, user oriented legends which can be used for coastal planning.
