Chiral condensate and the equation of state at nonzero baryon density from the hadron resonance gas model with a repulsive mean field

We study the QCD equation of state and the chiral condensate using the hadron resonance gas model with repulsive mean-field interactions. We find that the repulsive interactions improve the agreement with the lattice results on the derivatives of the pressure with respect to the baryon chemical potential up to eighth order. From the temperature dependence of the chiral condensate we estimate the crossover temperature as a function of baryon chemical potential, T p c ( μ B ) . We find that the chiral crossover line starts to deviate significantly from the chemical freeze-out line already for μ B > 400 MeV . Furthermore, we find that the chiral pseudocritical line can be parametrized as T p c ( μ B ) / T p c ( 0 ) = 1 − κ 2 [ μ B / T p c ( 0 ) ] 2 − κ 4 [ μ B / T p c ( 0 ) ] 4 with κ 2 = 0.0150 ( 2 ) and κ 4 = 3.1 ( 6 ) × 10 − 5 , which are in agreement with lattice QCD results for small values of μ B . For the first time we find a tiny but nonzero value of κ 4 in our study. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Quantifying concordance of correlated cosmological data sets

We develop estimators of agreement and disagreement between correlated cosmological data sets. These account for data correlations when computing the significance of both tensions and excess confirmation while remaining statistically optimal. We discuss and thoroughly characterize different approaches commenting on the ones that have the best behavior in practical applications. We complement the calculation of their statistical distribution within the Gaussian model with one estimator that takes non-Gaussianities fully into account. To illustrate the use of our techniques, we apply these estimators to supernovae measurements of the distance-redshift relation, absolutely calibrated by the local distance ladder. The suite of best estimators that we discuss finds results that are in excellent agreement between estimators and find no indications of significant internal inconsistencies in this data set above the 1% probability threshold. Furthermore, this shows the robustness of local determinations of the Hubble constant to features in the distance-redshift relation.

Dark Energy Survey Year 3 results: Cosmology from cosmic shear and robustness to modeling uncertainty

Here, this work and its companion paper, Amon et al. [Phys. Rev. D 105, 023514 (2022)], present cosmic shear measurements and cosmological constraints from over 100 million source galaxies in the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year 3 data. We constrain the lensing amplitude parameter 𝑆 8 ≡𝜎 8 ⁢$\sqrt{Ω_{m}/0.3}$ at the 3% level in Λ⁢ CDM: 𝑆 8 =0.75⁢9$^{+0.025}_{−0.023}$ (68% CL). Our constraint is at the 2% level when using angular scale cuts that are optimized for the Λ⁢ CDM analysis: 𝑆 8 =0.77⁢2$^{+0.018}_{−0.017}$ (68% CL). With cosmic shear alone, we find no statistically significant constraint on the dark energy equation-of-state parameter at our present statistical power. We carry out our analysis blind, and compare our measurement with constraints from two other contemporary weak lensing experiments: the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) and Hyper-Suprime Camera Subaru Strategic Program (HSC). We additionally quantify the agreement between our data and external constraints from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Our DES Y3 result under the assumption of Λ⁢ CDM is found to be in statistical agreement with Planck 2018, although favors a lower 𝑆 8 than the CMB-inferred value by 2.3⁢𝜎 (a 𝑝-value of 0.02). This paper explores the robustness of these cosmic shear results to modeling of intrinsic alignments, the matter power spectrum and baryonic physics. We additionally explore the statistical preference of our data for intrinsic alignment models of different complexity. The fiducial cosmic shear model is tested using synthetic data, and we report no biases greater than 0.3⁢𝜎 in the plane of 𝑆 8 ×Ω m caused by uncertainties in the theoretical models.

Improved algorithm for dynamical triangulations and simulations of finer lattices

We introduce a new algorithm for the simulation of Euclidean dynamical triangulations that mimics the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, but where all proposed moves are accepted. This rejection-free algorithm allows for the factorization of local and global terms in the action, a condition needed for efficient simulation of theories with global terms, while still maintaining detailed balance. We test our algorithm on the 2 d Ising model, and against results for EDT obtained with standard Metropolis. Our new algorithm allows us to simulate EDT at finer lattice spacings than previously possible, and we find geometries that resemble semiclassical Euclidean de Sitter space in agreement with earlier results at coarser lattices. The agreement between lattice data and the classical de Sitter solution continues to get better as the lattice spacing decreases. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Updated analyses of gluon distribution functions for the pion and kaon from the gauge-invariant nonlocal chiral quark model

In this work, we investigate the gluon distribution functions for the pion and kaon, in addition to the improved result of the valence-quark ones, in the gauge-invariant nonlocal chiral-quark model, in which the momentum dependence of the quark interactions is properly taken into account. We then analyze the gluon distribution functions, generated dynamically through the splitting functions in the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi QCD evolution. By comparing with the recent lattice QCD results and Jefferson Lab angular momentum global analyses, it is found that the present numerical results for the gluon parton distribution functions for the pion exhibit a good agreement and the valence up-quark distribution results for the pion by reproducing the reanalyzed experimental data with a remarkable agreement. Our prediction on the gluon distribution functions for the kaon is also consistent with the recent lattice data for the kaon within the errors. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Gravitational waveforms: A tale of two formalisms

We revisit the quantum-amplitude-based derivation of the gravitational waveform emitted by the scattering of two spinless massive bodies at the third order in Newton’s constant, ℎ ∼ 𝐺 + 𝐺 2 + 𝐺 3 (one-loop level), and correspondingly update its comparison with its classically derived multipolar-post-Minkowskian counterpart. A spurious-pole-free reorganization of the one-loop five-point amplitude substantially simplifies the post-Newtonian expansion. We find complete agreement between the two results up to the fifth order in the small velocity expansion after taking into account three subtle aspects of the amplitude derivation: (1) in agreement with [A. Georgoudis et al., J. High Energy Phys. 03 (2024) 089], the term quadratic in the amplitude in the observable-based formalism [D. A. Kosower et al., J. High Energy Phys. 02 (2019) 137] generates a frame rotation by half the classical scattering angle; (2) the dimensional regularization of the infrared divergences of the amplitude introduces an additional (𝑑 − 4)/(𝑑 − 4) finite term; and (3) zero-frequency gravitons are found to contribute additional terms both at order ℎ ∼ 𝐺 1 and at order ℎ ∼ 𝐺 3 when including disconnected diagrams in the observable-based formalism.

CMB lensing and Ly⁢ α forest cross bispectrum from DESI’s first-year quasar sample

The squeezed cross-bispectrum B κ,Ly α between the gravitational lensing in the cosmic microwave background and the 1D Ly α forest power spectrum can constrain bias parameters and break degeneracies between σ8 and other cosmological parameters. We detect B κ,Ly ⁢α with 4.8⁢σ significance at an effective redshift z eff =2.4 using Planck PR3 lensing map and over 280,000 quasar spectra from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument’s first-year data. We test our measurement against metal contamination and foregrounds such as Galactic extinction and clusters of galaxies by deprojecting the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. Finally, we compare our results to a tree-level perturbation theory calculation and find reasonable agreement between the model and measurement.

Measurement of the differential cross section for neutral pion production in charged-current muon neutrino interactions on argon with the MicroBooNE detector

We present a measurement of neutral pion production in charged-current interactions using data recorded with the MicroBooNE detector exposed to Fermilab’s booster neutrino beam. The signal comprises one muon, one neutral pion, any number of nucleons, and no charged pions. Studying neutral pion production in the MicroBooNE detector provides an opportunity to better understand neutrino-argon interactions, and is crucial for future accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments. Using a dataset corresponding to 6.86 ×10 20 protons on target, we present single-differential cross sections in muon and neutral pion momenta, scattering angles with respect to the beam for the outgoing muon and neutral pion, as well as the opening angle between the muon and neutral pion. Data extracted cross sections are compared to generator predictions. We report good agreement between the data and the models for scattering angles, except for an over-prediction by generators at muon forward angles. Similarly, the agreement between data and the models as a function of momentum is good, except for an underprediction by generators in the medium momentum ranges, 200–400 MeV for muons and 100–200 MeV for pions.

Data-driven results for light-quark connected and strange-plus-disconnected hadronic g − 2 short- and long-distance windows

A key issue affecting the attempt to reduce the uncertainty on the Standard Model prediction for the muon anomalous magnetic moment is the current discrepancy between lattice-QCD and data-driven results for the hadronic vacuum polarization. Progress on this issue benefits from precise data-driven determinations of the isospin-limit light-quark-connected (lqc) and strange-plus-light-quark-disconnected ( s + lqd ) components of the related RBC/UKQCD windows. In this paper, using a strategy employed previously for the intermediate window, we provide data-driven results for the lqc and s + lqd components of the short- and long-distance RBC/UKQCD windows. Comparing these results with those from the lattice, we find significant discrepancies in the lqc parts but good agreement for the s + lqd components. We also explore the impact of recent CMD- 3 e + e − → π + π − cross section results, demonstrating that an upward shift in the ρ -peak region of the type seen in the CMD-3 data serves to eliminate the discrepancies for the lqc components without compromising the good agreement between lattice and data-driven s + lqd results. Flavor patterns of fundamental particles from quantum entanglement?

The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix, which controls flavor mixing between the three generations of quark fermions, is a key input to the standard model of particle physics. In this paper, we identify a surprising connection between quantum entanglement and the degree of quark mixing. Focusing on a specific limit of 2 → 2 quark scattering mediated by electroweak bosons, we find that the quantum entanglement generated by scattering is minimized when the CKM matrix is almost (but not exactly) diagonal, in qualitative agreement with observation. With the discovery of neutrino masses and mixings, additional angles are needed to parametrize the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) matrix in the lepton sector. Applying the same logic, we find that quantum entanglement is minimized when the PMNS matrix features two large angles and a smaller one, again in qualitative agreement with observation, plus a hint for suppressed C P violation. We speculate on the (unlikely but tantalizing) possibility that minimization of quantum entanglement might be a fundamental principle that determines particle physics input parameters. Dark Energy Survey Year 3 results: Simulation-based cosmological inference with wavelet harmonics, scattering transforms, and moments of weak lensing mass maps. II. cosmological results

Here, we present a simulation-based cosmological analysis using a combination of Gaussian and non-Gaussian statistics of the weak lensing mass (convergence) maps from the first three years of the Dark Energy Survey. We implement the following: (1) second and third moments; (2) wavelet phase harmonics; (3) the scattering transform. Our analysis is fully based on simulations, spans a space of seven 𝑤 Cold Dark Matter (𝑤⁢ CDM) cosmological parameters, and forward models the most relevant sources of systematics inherent in the data: masks, noise variations, clustering of the sources, intrinsic alignments, and shear and redshift calibration. We implement a neural network compression of the summary statistics, and we estimate the parameter posteriors using a simulation-based inference approach. Including and combining different non-Gaussian statistics is a powerful tool that strongly improves constraints over Gaussian statistics (in our case, the second moments); in particular, the figure of merit (𝑆 8 , Ω m ) is improved by 70% (Λ ⁢CDM) and 90% (𝑤 ⁢CDM). When all the summary statistics are combined, we achieve a 2% constraint on the amplitude of fluctuations parameter 𝑆 8 ≡ 𝜎 8 ⁢(Ω m /0.3) 0.5 , obtaining 𝑆 8 = 0.794 ±0.017 (Λ⁢ CDM) and 𝑆 8 = 0.817 ±0.021 (𝑤 ⁢CDM), and a ∼10% constraint on Ω m , obtaining Ω m =0.259 ±0.025 (Λ ⁢CDM) and Ω m = 0.273 ±0.029 (𝑤⁢ CDM). In the context of the 𝑤⁢ CDM scenario, these statistics also strengthen the constraints on the parameter 𝑤, obtaining 𝑤 <−0.72. The constraints from different statistics are shown to be internally consistent (with a 𝑝-value>0.1 for all combinations of statistics examined). We compare our results to other weak lensing results from the first three years of the Dark Energy Survey data, finding good consistency; we also compare with results from external datasets, such as planck constraints from the cosmic microwave background, finding statistical agreement, with discrepancies no greater than <2.2⁢𝜎.

Self-consistent analysis for the η c → γ γ process

The next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) perturbative QCD (pQCD) predictions for both the decay width and the transition form factor in the η c → γ γ process, based on nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD), deviate from precise experimental measurements. These significant discrepancies have cast doubt on the applicability of NRQCD to charmonium processes. In this paper, we analyze the η c → γ γ process by applying the principle of maximum conformality (PMC), a systematic method for eliminating renormalization scheme-and-scale ambiguities. The PMC renormalization scales are determined by absorbing the nonconformal β -terms that govern the behavior of the QCD running coupling via the renormalization group equation. We obtain the PMC scale Q ⋆ = 4.49 m c for the η c → γ γ decay width. Even after using the PMC method, the convergence of the pQCD series is still poor, which indicates the importance of uncalculated next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-order and higher-order terms. The resulting value for Γ η c → γ γ is in agreement with the Particle Data Group’s reported value of Γ η c → γ γ = 5.1 ± 0.4 keV within the bounds of uncertainties. Moreover, the transition form factor obtained using the PMC is also in good agreement with precise experimental measurements. The application of the PMC suggests a potential resolution to η c → γ γ puzzle and supports the applicability of NRQCD to charmonium processes. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Integral equation theory of thermodynamics, pair structure, and growing static length scale in metastable hard sphere and Weeks-Chandler-Andersen fluids

Here, we employ the Ornstein-Zernike integral equation theory with the Percus-Yevick (PY) and modified-Verlet (MV) closures to study the equilibrium structural and thermodynamic properties of metastable monodisperse hard sphere and continuous repulsion Weeks-Chandler-Andersen (WCA) fluids under density and temperature conditions where the system is strongly overcompressed or supercooled, respectively. The theoretical results are compared to crystal-avoiding simulations of these dense monodisperse model one-component fluids. The equation of state (EOS) and dimensionless compressibility are computed using both the virial and compressibility routes. For hard spheres, the MV-based virial route EOS and dimensionless compressibility are in very good agreement with simulation for all packing fractions, much better than the PY analogs. The corresponding MV-based predictions for the static structure factor are also very good. The amplitude of density fluctuations on the local cage scale and in the long wavelength limit, and three technically different measures of the density correlation length, are studied with both closures. All five properties grow in a roughly exponential manner with density in the metastable regime up to packing fractions of 58% with no sign of saturation. The MV-based results are in good agreement with our crystal-avoiding simulations. Interestingly, the density dependences of long and short wavelength quantities are closely related. The MV-based theory is also quite accurate for the thermodynamics and structure of supercooled monodisperse WCA fluids. Overall our findings are also relevant as critical input to microscopic theories that relate the equilibrium pair correlation function or static structure factor to dynamical constraints, barriers, and activated relaxation in glass-forming liquids.

Spatiotemporal spread of perturbations in power-law models at low temperatures: Exact results for classical out-of-time-order correlators

Here, we present exact results for the classical version of the out-of-time-order commutator (OTOC) for a family of power-law models consisting of N particles in one dimension and confined by an external harmonic potential. These particles are interacting via power-law interaction of the form ∝ $Σ_{i,j=(i≠j)}^{N}$ |x i -x j | -k for every k>1 where x i is the position of the i th particle. We present numerical results for the OTOC for finite N at low temperatures and short enough times so that the system is well approximated by the linearized dynamics around the many-body ground state. In the large-N limit, we compute the ground-state dispersion relation in the absence of external harmonic potential exactly and use it to arrive at analytical results for OTOC. We find excellent agreement between our analytical results and the numerics. We further obtain analytical results in the limit where only linear and leading nonlinear (in momentum) terms in the dispersion relation are included. The resulting OTOC is in agreement with numerics in the vicinity of the edge of the “light cone.” We find remarkably distinct features in OTOC below and above k=3 in terms of going from non-Airy behavior (1 < k < 3) to an Airy universality class (k>3). We present certain additional rich features for the case k=2 that stem from the underlying integrability of the Calogero-Moser model. We present a field theory approach that also assists in understanding certain aspects of OTOC such as the sound speed. Our findings are a step forward towards a more general understanding of the spatiotemporal spread of perturbations in long-range interacting systems.

Binding kinetics of harmonically confined random walkers

Diffusion-mediated binding of molecules under the influence of discrete spatially confining potentials is a commonly encountered scenario in systems subjected to explicit fields or implicit fields arising from tethering restraints. Here, in this work, we derive analytical expressions for the mean binding time of two random walkers geometrically confined by means of two harmonic potentials in one- and two-dimensional systems, which show excellent agreement with Brownian dynamics simulations. As a demonstration of its utility, we use this theory to maximize the communication speed in existing DNA walkers, obtaining quantitative agreement with previously reported experimental findings. The analytical expressions derived in this paper are broadly applicable to diverse systems, providing ways to characterize communication processes and optimize the rate of signal propagation for sensing and computing applications at the nanoscale.

First-principles study of L -shell iron and chromium opacity at stellar interior temperatures

Recently developed free-energy density functional theory (DFT)-based methodology for optical property calculations of warm dense matter has been applied for studying L-shell opacity of iron and chromium at T = 182 eV. We use Mermin–Kohn–Sham density functional theory with a ground-state and a fully temperature-dependent generalized gradient approximation exchange-correlation (XC) functionals. It is demonstrated that the role of XC at such a high-T is negligible due to the total free-energy of interacting system being dominated by the noninteracting free-energy term in agreement with estimations for the homogeneous electron gas. Furthermore, our DFT predictions are compared to the radiative emissivity and opacity of dense plasmas model, to the real-space Greens function method, and to experimental measurements. Good agreement is found between all three theoretical methods, and in the bound–continuum region for Cr when compared to the experiment, while the discrepancy between direct DFT calculations and the experiment for Fe remains essentially the same as for plasma-physics models.

Effect of slip on vortex shedding from a circular cylinder in a gas flow

Most studies of vortex shedding from a circular cylinder in a gas flow have explicitly or implicitly assumed that the no-slip condition applies on the cylinder surface. To investigate the effect of slip, vortex shedding is simulated using molecular gas dynamics (the direct simulation Monte Carlo method) and computational fluid dynamics (the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with a slip boundary condition). A Reynolds number of 100, a Mach number of 0.3, and a corresponding Knudsen number of 0.0048 are examined. For these conditions, compressibility effects are small, and periodic laminar vortex shedding is obtained. Slip on the cylinder is varied using combinations of diffuse and specular molecular reflections with accommodation coefficients from zero (maximum slip) to unity (minimum slip). Although unrealistic, bounce-back molecular reflections are also examined because they approximate the no-slip boundary condition (zero slip). The results from both methods are in reasonable agreement. The shedding frequency increases slightly as the accommodation coefficient is decreased, and shedding ceases at low accommodation coefficients (large slip). The streamwise and transverse forces decrease as the accommodation coefficient is decreased. Based on the good agreement between the two methods, computational fluid dynamics is used to determine the critical accommodation coefficient below which vortex shedding ceases for Reynolds numbers of 60–100 at a Mach number of 0.3. Finally, conditions to observe the effect of slip on vortex shedding appear to be experimentally realizable, although challenging.
