Understanding Mobility Behavior Using OpenPATH

In this presentation, we present the motivation behind the creation of NRELOpenPATH, what data the tool can collect, how the app works, and how interested parties can set up a deployment for their own project. OpenPATH is unique in it's ability to engage users in longitudinal travel diary collection with a smartphone app. The app allows projects to examine the modes of users travel, as well as the purpose of that travel. Many deployments have examined the way users travel by e-bike, and the app supports data collection across all modes to gain a holistic view of mobility behavior. The app is configurable for each deployment, and we will describe the way in which NREL hosts project deployments of our open-source project. As this presentation is a part of a panel, time for questions will be included.

Enhancing the EVI-X National Framework to Address Emerging Questions on Charging Infrastructure Deployment

As large national investments in EV charging continue to be made, this project seeks to improve the state-of-the-art in EV infrastructure analysis. New and improved quantitative analysis capabilities will position VTO to support EERE Leadership, assist the DOT/DOE Joint Office through timely analysis, and provide a strategy for the deployment of the national charging network. This project supports on-going development of NREL's EVI-X Suite of charging infrastructure analysis tools, including tools supporting large-scale network planning, local site design decisions, and comprehensive financial analysis. EVI-X development complements and leverages other VTO-funded efforts to ensure inputs to EVI-X and output produced by EVI-X are consistent with and well-integrated into the VTO portfolio (e.g., EV adoption scenarios from TEMPO, charging infrastructure design provided to EVs@Scale, etc.).

Design, Optimization, and Validation of GaN-Based DAB Converter for Active Cell Balancing in BTMS Applications: Preprint

This paper focuses on the design of a bidirectional dual active bridge (DAB) DC/DC converter that utilizes Gallium Nitride (GaN) switches as active components. In the existing literature, MOSFET-based DAB for active cell balancing is available, but GaN-based DAB converter for active cell balancing is still new. The proposed modular isolated GaN-based DAB converter is designed as an individual module of active cell balancing for behind-the-meter storage (BTMS) applications, targeting high-power charging stations. Modular isolated converters are connected to each cell (low voltage bus), and each cell is connected in series to build up a battery module. According to the reference current command of supervisory control, each DAB converter can transfer power back and forth through the high voltage (HV) bus to balance the State of Charge (SoC) between the cells. Each module DAB converter is designed at a 50W power rating. Switch power and transformer losses are analyzed for different switching frequencies, showing the optimum switching frequency for minimum losses. Furthermore, the procedure to select the required gate driver and the PCB layout optimization are discussed. Finally, the DAB performance analysis of GaNbased DAB and Si-based DAB is provided for a battery module operating with a LiFeMnPO4 prismatic cell with 3.2V 20Ah rated values.

Pathways Toward Electric Mobility in Hennepin County, Minnesota

This fact sheet presents the findings from a comprehensive community engagement initiative focused on advancing equitable transportation electrification in Hennepin County. This initiative responds to the critical need for inclusive and sustainable mobility solutions in the face of rising environmental and financial challenges in the transportation sector. This project has two goals. First, to learn what each community's priorities are and share them with the city, county, and state government to inform transportation plans and projects. Second, to bridge divides between government and community, building pathways for community-guided decision making on future transportation plans.

Embedding Equity into Electric Vehicle Charging Station Design

Once a site location is selected for the installation of an electric vehicle (EV) charging station, the next step is to plan and design the specific station. Local and state governments can require and/ or incentivize accessible and safe design elements, so the station is constructed in an equitable manner.

Fast Charging Infrastructure for Electrifying Road Trips to and from National Parks in the Western United States

This study investigated the fast-charging infrastructure needed by 2030 to enable seamless electrified road trips to and from national parks and monuments in seven western states: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. It also estimated impacts to the electric grid. The research team investigated how on-route charging infrastructure projections change with different parameters or assumptions, as do related charging loads and grid impacts. NREL conducted the study in partnership with utility service provider PacifiCorp and Utah State University as part of the Western Smart Regional EV Adoption and Infrastructure at Scale project.

Modeling of H2 Dispersion at ARIES

Hydrogen is a versatile and clean energy carrier that can be produced from various renewable sources such as wind, solar, and hydropower and help decarbonize electricity grids, industry, and transportation. Using the Hydrogen Research Facility under Advanced Research on Integrated Energy Systems (ARIES) at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) Flatirons campus as a test bench, the study examines the feasibility, useability, and value of using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques to model hydrogen dispersion. The ARIES facility was chosen because controlled hydrogen releases can be performed at a rate of 27 kg-H2/hr. Site-specific atmospheric and weather condition data such as wind speed and temperature were used as inputs to the model. The results show statistical distributions and ranges of hydrogen concentrations at locations throughout the domain. Wind conditions are found to significantly impact the release behavior, including the hydrogen cloud's direction and concentrations. At low wind speeds (below 1 mph), hydrogen forms a cloud and at higher wind speeds (> 2-4 mph) hydrogen plume stretches in the direction of wind momentum. From >100 simulations for ARIES site-specific conditions, statistical quantities combined with a clustering algorithm were used to propose sensor location at various elevations from ground.

Integrated Renewable Energy Systems

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) operates the Department of Energy’s (DOE) only dedicated marine laboratory at the PNNL-Sequim campus. PNNL is leading research in the blue economy and marine energy applications and building collaboration between DOE and multiple partners in the state of Washington and beyond. With Washington State support, the Integrated Renewable Energy System (IRES) demonstration testbed proposed here will advance research by developing and testing renewable energy production, management, and use for multiple marine applications (e.g., ocean observations, underwater vehicles, aquaculture). It will also advance energy resiliency for coastal communities by developing an integrated renewable energy test platform that will model how multiple renewable energy resources could power shoreline businesses or communities (Figure 1). The test bed will demonstrate how different renewable systems can be integrated to reduce carbon emissions and contribute to a net zero emissions site and provide lessons, controls, and protocols that will help to expand energy options for shoreline and maritime businesses. The integrated system is expected to serve as a test bed for shoreline power and ocean energy technologies for years to come.
