SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego Theory Manual - Version 5.8

The SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego, henceforth referred to as Fuego, is the key element of the ASC fire environment simulation project. The fire environment simulation project is directed at characterizing both open large-scale pool fires and building enclosure fires. Fuego represents the turbulent, buoyantly-driven incompressible flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, combustion, soot, and absorption coefficient model portion of the simulation software. Using MPMD coupling, Scefire and Nalu handle the participating-media thermal radiation mechanics. This project is an integral part of the SIERRA multi-mechanics software development project. Fuego depends heavily upon the core architecture developments provided by SIERRA for massively parallel computing, solution adaptivity, and mechanics coupling on unstructured grids.

Design and breadboard evaluation of the SPS reference phase control system concept

Efficient operation of a very large phased array such as the proposed solar power satellite, requires precision focusing and pointing of the power beam; i.e., the power beam must have a planar wavefront directed precisely at the center of the target antenna (rectenna). To maintain such a power beam requires real-time phase compensation at each subaperture in order to adjust for structural deformations and other transitory factors. In the current solar power satellite (SPS) baseline, the spaceborne antenna (Spacetenna) is an active retrodirective array. A pilot signal transmitted from the center of the rectenna is phase-conjugated at each subaperture (power module) of the spacetenna, thereby assuring that the radiated composite wave is focused on the target. This scheme requires a large amount of precision electronic circuitry on the spacetenna. Specifically, pilot receivers must be located at each power module and an adaptive distribution network is required in order to provide a properly phased reference signal at each conjugator.

Self-adaptive closed constrained solution algorithms for nonlinear conduction

Self-adaptive solution algorithms are developed for nonlinear heat conduction problems encountered in analyzing materials for use in high temperature or cryogenic conditions. The nonlinear effects are noted to occur due to convection and radiation effects, as well as temperature-dependent properties of the materials. Incremental successive substitution (ISS) and Newton-Raphson (NR) procedures are treated as extrapolation schemes which have solution projections bounded by a hyperline with an externally applied thermal load vector arising from internal heat generation and boundary conditions. Closed constraints are formulated which improve the efficiency and stability of the procedures by employing closed ellipsoidal surfaces to control the size of successive iterations. Governing equations are defined for nonlinear finite element models, and comparisons are made of results using the the new method and the ISS and NR schemes for epoxy, PVC, and CuGe.

Target Calibration: Retro-Reflection Mechanisms at 2 Micron

With the growing use of 2-micrometer eye-safe solid-state laser transmitters in coherent Doppler lidar applications, there is increased interest in the reflectance properties of hard target calibration materials at this wavelength. One of the factors to be considered is the polarization characteristic of the transmitter/receiver. The two fundamental lidar systems are either based upon the backscattering of linearly polarized or circularly polarized light. Consequently, the response of calibration materials to the particular state of polarization of the incident radiation is an important consideration. Ideally the calibration materials should have a similar reflectance response to that of the remote scattering medium that is being observed. Also the material should be most efficiently adapted to the polarization characteristics of the lidar system. There are two measurement parameters that are useful in presenting the characteristics of polarization of reflecting materials. The first is the linear polarization ratio: mu (sub l) =I (sub ol)/I (sub sl), where ol denotes opposite linear and sl denotes same linear. The second is circular polarization ratio: mu (sub c) = I (sub sc)/I (sub oc) where ol denotes opposite circular and sc denotes same circular. Notice that the ratios are inverted with respect to same polarization. It is the relative values of these polarization ratios that are used to characterize the retro-reflectance mechanism. Measurement of these parameters is conveniently obtained by using the Stokes vectors corresponding to the polarized backscatter at and near the retro-angle.

Human Research Program Human Health Countermeasures Element: Evidence Report - Artificial Gravity

The most serious risks of long-duration flight involve radiation, behavioral stresses, and physiological deconditioning. Artificial gravity (AG), by substituting for the missing gravitational cues and loading in space, has the potential to mitigate the last of these risks by preventing the adaptive responses from occurring. The rotation of a Mars-bound spacecraft or an embarked human centrifuge offers significant promise as an effective, efficient multi-system countermeasure against the physiological deconditioning associated with prolonged weightlessness. Virtually all of the identified risks associated with bone loss, muscle weakening, cardiovascular deconditioning, and sensorimotor disturbances might be alleviated by the appropriate application of AG. However, experience with AG in space has been limited and a human-rated centrifuge is currently not available on board the ISS. A complete R&D program aimed at determining the requirements for gravity level, gravity gradient, rotation rate, frequency, and duration of AG exposure is warranted before making a decision for implementing AG in a human spacecraft.

Rodent Research in Space: A Decadal Research Campaign

Studying the physiological effects of spaceflight in rodents is imperative to our understanding of adaptation and to providing countermeasures. We posit that studies of the reproductive system, development, stem cells, and behavior/cognition are critically important and provide outstanding opportunities as these are sentinel tissues and systems for radiation exposure and overall health. To improve understanding of the environmental stressors (weightlessness, space radiation, isolation/confinement) that impact space travelers, rodent research should be continued within and extended beyond LEO.
