Zinc dendrite removal in a nickel-zinc battery with flow-through electrodes

The development and deployment of inexpensive energy storage technologies is critical to realizing a clean energy grid. Batteries are being used in this role, but there remains a need for research on systems that are designed specifically for stationary energy storage, with a focus on lowering the overall cost rather than prioritizing the system energy density, specific energy, and power output. Here, we report the development of ultra-thick (1 cm thick) electrodes with engineered flow channels and explore the variables determining how thick these electrodes can feasibly be. Our proof of concept cell, utilizing the alkaline Ni-Zn chemistry, shows stable cycling over the initial 60 cycles but still suffers from the common Zn dendrite growth at the anode. To extend the life of these systems we report our novel methodology to completely remove Zn dendrites by exploiting the flow-through nature of our electrode architecture.

Origin of high optical contrast in zinc-zinc oxide electrodeposits for dynamic windows

The control of solar light and heat emission through windows is an important strategy for increasing the energy efficiency of buildings. Reversible Zn electrodeposition has recently emerged as a promising method for constructing electronically tintable robust dynamic windows. In Zn electrodeposits formed from dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) electrolytes during device tinting, we observe extraordinary absorption that is in excess of what is predicted by the Beer-Lambert law for a uniform Zn thin film. Here, the charge required to electroplate these films is abnormally low, significantly less than previously reported dynamic windows based on reversible metal electrodeposition, which facilitates the construction of large-area devices that switch uniformly. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations are used to investigate the origin of this enhanced absorption, which arises from plasmonic effects among the Zn nanoparticles and ZnO dendrites in the film. The dielectric ZnO dendrites promote absorption via slit-like Zn-dielectric-Zn structures that from hybrid surface plasmon resonance at metal walls. Through these investigations, we provide design principles to construct low-charge and high-contrast metal and metal oxide-based dynamic windows.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and friction studies of nickel-zinc and manganese-zinc ferrites in contact with metals

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and sliding friction experiments were conducted with hot-pressed, polycrystalline Ni-Zn and Mn-Zn ferrites in sliding contact with various transition metals at room temperature in a vacuum of 30 nPa. The results indicate that the coefficients of friction for Ni-Zn and Mn-Zn ferrites in contact with metals are related to the relative chemical activity in these metals: the more active the metal, the higher is the coefficient of friction. The coefficients of friction for the ferrites correlate with the free energy of formation of the lowest metal oxide. The interfacial bond can be regarded as a chemical bond between the metal atoms and the oxygen anions in the ferrite surfaces. The adsorption of oxygen on clean metal and ferrite surfaces increases the coefficients of friction for the Ni-Zn and Mn-Zn ferrite-metal interfaces.
