Combined Machine Learning and Molecular Dynamics Reveal Two States of Hydration of a Single Functional Group of Cationic Polymeric Brushes

The state of hydration of a macromolecular system regulates a plethora of different properties of such a system. In this article, we develop a novel machine learning (ML) approach, based on the unsupervised clustering algorithm, for probing the hydration behavior of the {N(CH 3 ) 3 } + functional group of the PMETAC [Poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl trimethylammonium chloride] polyelectrolyte (PE) brush system. The PE brushes and the brush-supported water molecules and counterions (chloride ions) are first described using all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The simulation data is subsequently used in our ML framework to identify that (1) the {N(CH 3 ) 3 } + functional groups of the PMETAC brushes have two distinct hydration states with one state (state 1) being characterized by less structured water molecules and the other state (state 2) being characterized by more structured water molecules and (2) an enhancement in the brush grafting density leads to the progressive dissapparenace of state 2. An increase in the grafting density increases the number of chloride counterions in a given volume around the {N(CH 3 ) 3 } + functional group and increases the number of shared water molecules between the {N(CH 3 ) 3 } + and Cl - . The chloride counterions are associated with a hydration layer with much less structured water molecules. Therefore, with an increase in the grafting density, an increase in the percentage of shared water molecules leads to the prevalence of the hydration state [of the {N(CH 3 ) 3 } + moiety] with less structured water molecules. Finally, we explain how the present findings are commensurate with two key previous related results, namely a significantly large chloride ion mobility inside the PMETAC brush layer and the {N(CH 3 ) 3 } + -Cl - average distance remaining independent of the PMETAC brush grafting density. Furthermore, we anticipate that the combined ML-MD-simulation approach proposed in this study can be adapted to probe other soft matter systems to reveal new insights of the underlying mechanisms of emergent phenomenon.

Discovery of Graphene-Water Membrane Structure: Toward High-Quality Graphene Process

It is widely accepted that solid-state membranes are indispensable media for the graphene process, particularly transfer procedures. But these membranes inevitably bring contaminations and residues to the transferred graphene and consequently compromise the material quality. This study reports a newly observed free-standing graphene-water membrane structure, which replaces the conventional solid-state supporting media with liquid film to sustain the graphene integrity and continuity. Experimental observation, theoretical model, and molecular dynamics simulations consistently indicate that the high surface tension of pure water and its large contact angle with graphene are essential factors for forming such a membrane structure. More interestingly, water surface tension ensures the flatness of graphene layers and renders high transfer quality on many types of target substrates. This report enriches the understanding of the interactions on reduced dimensional material while rendering an alternative approach for scalable layered material processing with ensured quality for advanced manufacturing.

Water relations, thallus structure and photosynthesis in Negev Desert lichens

The role of lichen thallus structure in water relations and photosynthesis was studied in Ramalina maciformis (Del.) Bory and Teloschistes lacunosus (Rupr.) Sav. Water-vapour adsorption and photosynthesis are dependent upon thallus integrity and are significantly lower in crushed thalli. Cultured phycobiont (Trebouxia sp.) cells are capable of photosynthesis over the same relative humidity range (> 80% RH) as are intact lichens. Thus, water-vapour adsorption by the thallus and physiological adaptation of the phycobiont contribute to the ability of these lichens to photosynthesize in an arid environment. Despite differences in their anatomical structure and water-uptake characteristics, their CO2 incorporation is similar. The two lichens use liquid water differently and they occupy different niches.

How Silica Surface Chemistry Modulates Interfacial Water: Insights from Machine Learning Molecular Dynamics

Controlling water structure and dynamics at silica interfaces are central to a wide range of technologies, including protective oxide layers for solar water splitting and nanoporous membranes. In this work, we develop a machine learning interatomic potential, trained via active learning, to achieve ab initio accuracy for water confined between hydroxylated silica surfaces over a range of silanol coverages and slit widths. We find that partially hydroxylated surfaces (50 and 75% OH) support stronger water−surface hydrogen bonding and more extended interfacial density profiles than fully hydroxylated (100% OH) surfaces, indicating that increasing OH coverage does not necessarily strengthen interfacial hydrogenbond networks. Translational diffusion decreases approximately linearly with slit width and OH coverage, whereas rotational dynamics respond nonlinearly. In particular, at the smallest slit width of 5 Å, 75% OH coverage produces an enhanced local tetrahedral ordered interfacial network that strongly suppresses reorientation, while 100% coverage yields a crowded, disordered interfacial layer that also hinders rotation. In contrast, the 50% OH coverage is sufficiently sparse that it does not markedly alter water structure or dynamics under confinement. These results show that coupled control of pore size and surface chemistry enables nonlinear tuning of interfacial water structure and transport, providing a design strategy for optimizing porous silica for either enhanced interfacial stability and controlled reactivity or rapid and selective transport.

Structurally Defined Water‐Soluble Metallofullerene Derivatives towards Biomedical Applications

Abstract Endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) are excellent carriers of rare‐earth element (REE) ions in biomedical applications because they preclude the release of toxic metal ions. However, existing approaches to synthesize water‐soluble EMF derivatives yield mixtures that inhibit precise drug design. Here we report the synthesis of metallobuckytrio (MBT), a three‐buckyball system, as a modular platform to develop structurally defined water‐soluble EMF derivatives with ligands by choice. Demonstrated with PEG ligands, the resulting water‐soluble MBTs show superb biocompatibility. The Gd MBTs exhibit superior T 1 relaxivity than typical Gd complexes, potentially superseding current clinical MRI contrast agents in both safety and efficiency. The Lu MBTs generated reactive oxygen species upon light irradiation, showing promise as photosensitizers. With their modular nature to incorporate other ligands, we anticipate the MBT platform to open new paths towards bio‐specific REE drugs.

Structure of Water Adsorbed on Nanocrystalline Calcium Silicate Hydrate Determined from Neutron Scattering and Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) is a disordered, nanocrystalline material that acts as a primary binding phase in Portland cement. Thin films of water are present on the surfaces and in nanopores of C-S-H, impacting many of its chemical and mechanical properties, such as ion transport, creep, or thermal behavior. Despite decades of research, a full understanding of the structural details of adsorbed, confined, and bulk water in C-S-H remains elusive. In this work, we applied a multitechnique study involving molecular dynamics (MD) simulations validated by neutron diffraction with isotopic substitution (NDIS) and X-ray scattering methods to investigate the structure of water in C-S-H and C-A-S-H (an Al-bearing, low-CO 2 C-S-H substitute). Direct comparison of NDIS data with the MD results reveals that the structure of confined and interfacial water differs significantly from the bulk water and exhibits a larger degree of mesoscale ordering for more hydrated C-S-H structures. As a result, this observation suggests an important role of water as a stabilizer of the atomistic-level structure of C-S-H.

AFM Slip Length Measurements for Water at Selected Phyllosilicate Surfaces

Most reported slip length measurements have been made at the surfaces of synthetic materials and modified synthetic materials. In contrast, few slip length measurements at the surface of unmodified natural mineral surfaces have been reported. In this regard, flow at the silica face surfaces of the phyllosilicate minerals, talc and mica, was considered. A slip boundary condition was expected at the nonpolar hydrophobic silica surface of talc leading to enhanced flow, and a no-slip boundary condition was expected at the hydrophilic silica surface of mica. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) slip length measurements were made at the talc and mica surfaces. The slip length results for the hydrophobic silica surface of talc were contrasted to the results for the hydrophilic silica surface of mica (no-slip flow). The results are discussed based on molecular dynamics simulations (MDS), as reported in the literature, and AFM images of surface nanobubbles. For nonpolar hydrophobic surfaces (such as talc), it is doubtful that the MDS interfacial water structure and the water exclusion zone (3.2 Å) account for the AFM slip flow with slip lengths as great as 95 nm. Rather, a better explanation for the AFM slip flow condition is based on reduced interfacial viscosity due to the presence of dissolved gas and the accommodation of pancake nanobubbles at the talc surface having a height dimension of magnitude similar to the slip length.

Microwave brightness temperature of a windblown sea

A mathematical model is developed for the apparent temperature of the sea at all microwave frequencies. The model is a numerical model in which both the clear water structure and white water are accounted for as a function of wind speed. The model produces results similar to Stogryn's model at 19.35 GHz for wind speeds less than 8 m/sec; it can use radiosonde data to calculate atmospheric effects and can incorporate an empirically determined antenna gain pattern. The corresponding computer program is of modular design and the logic of the main program is capable of treating a horizontally inhomogeneous surface or atmosphere. It is shown that a variation of microwave brightness temperature with zenith angle is necessary to produce the wind sensitivity of the horizontally polarized brightness temperature; the variation of sky temperature with frequency is sufficient to produce a frequency dependent wind sensitivity.

The First Returned Samples From A C-Type Asteroid Show Kinship to the Chemically Most Primitive Meteorites

Bulk chemical and isotopic compositions, and mineralogy in the asteroid (162173) Ryugu samples show that Ryugu is mainly composed of materials related to the CI (Ivuna-like) carbonaceous chondrite group. The samples consist predominantly of minerals produced by aqueous alteration in a parent planetesimal from which Ryugu was derived. The 53Mn-53Cr systematics of dolomite suggest that this alteration occurred 5.2 (+0.7/–0.8) million years after formation of Ca-Al-rich inclusions, the first solids formed in the Solar System. The aqueous alteration temperature at the time dolomite and magnetite coprecipitated was 37±10°C. Unlike in CI chondrites, phyllosilicates in Ryugu have lost most of their interlayer water, but retained structural water. This indicates that following aqueous alteration the Ryugu samples avoided heating above ~90°C.

The Solvation of the E. coli CheY Phosphorylation Site Mapped by XFMS

The Escherichia coli CheY protein belongs to a large bacterial response regulator superfamily. X-ray hydroxy radical foot-printing with mass spectroscopy (XFMS) has shown that allosteric activation of CheY by its motor target triggers a concerted internalization of aromatic sidechains. We reanalyzed the XFMS data to compare polar versus non-polar CheY residue positions. The polar residues around and including the 57D phosphorylated site had an elevated hydroxy radical reactivity. Bioinformatic measures revealed that a water-mediated hydrogen bond network connected this ring of residues with the central 57D. These residues solvated 57D to energetically stabilize the apo-CheY fold. The abundance of these reactive residues was reduced upon activation. This result was supported by the bioinformatics and consistent with the previously reported activation-induced increase in core hydrophobicity. It further illustrated XFMS detection of structural waters. Direct contacts between the ring residues and the phosphorylation site would stabilize the aspartyl phosphate. In addition, we report that the ring residue, 18R, is a constant central node in the 57D solvation network and that 18R non-polar substitutions determine CheY diversity as assessed by its evolutionary trace in bacteria with well-studied chemotaxis. These results showcase the importance of structured water dynamics for phosphorylation-mediated signal transduction.

Structure of Water Ice in the Solar System

Nearly all of the properties of solar system ices (chemical reaction rates, volatile retention and release, vaporization behavior, thermal conductivity, infrared spectral characteristics and the like) are a direct consequence of ice structure. However, the characterization of astrophysical ices and their laboratory analogs has typically utilized indirect measurements which yield phenomenological interpretations. When water ice is vapor-deposited at 14 K and warmed until it volatilizes in moderate vacuum, the ice undergoes a series of amorphous to amorphous and amorphous to crystalline structural transitions which we have characterized by diffraction methods. These structural transitions correlate with and underlie many phenomena observed in laboratory infrared and gas release experiments. The elucidation of the dynamic structural changes which occur in vapor-deposited water ice as a function of time, temperature and radiation history allows for the more complete interpretation of remote observations of astrophysical ices and their laboratory analogs.

Dual-Band Electrochromism in Hydrous Tungsten Oxide

The independent modulation of visible and near-infrared light by a single material, termed dualband electrochromism, is highly desirable for smart windows to enhance the energy efficiency of buildings. Tungsten oxides are commercially important electrochromic materials, exhibiting reversible visible and near-infrared absorption when electrochemically reduced in an electrolyte containing small cations or protons. The presence of structural water in tungsten oxides has been associated with faster electrochromic switching speeds. Here, we find that WO 3 ·H 2 O, a crystalline hydrate, exhibits dual-band electrochromism unlike the anhydrous WO 3 providing a heretofore unexplored route to tune the electrochromic response of tungsten oxides. Absorption of near-infrared light is achieved at low Li + /e - injection, followed by the absorption of visible light at higher Li + /e - injection as a result of an electrochemically-induced phase transition. We propose that this dual-band modulation is possible due to the more open structure of WO 3 ·H 2 O as compared to WO 3 . This facilitates a more extended solid solution Li + insertion regime that benefits the modulation of near-infrared radiation via plasmon absorption. Higher degrees of Li + /e - insertion lead to polaronic absorption associated with localized charge storage. Furthermore, these results inform how structural factors influence the electrochemically induced spectral response of transition metal oxides and the important role of structural water beyond optical switching speed.

Venus cloud structure and water vapor abundance from Mariner 10 observations

Observations of the Venus atmosphere with the infrared radiometer on Mariner 10 have been analyzed by Taylor (1975) in terms of the vertical distribution of opacity at wavelengths near 11 microns and 45 microns in the thermal infrared. In this paper, we discuss models of the Venus atmosphere which are consistent with the inferred opacity structure. Either a two-layer cloud structure, or a single cloud deck overlaid by a layer containing approximately 40 precipitable microns of water vapor, would have the required limb-darkening characteristics at the wavelengths of observation.

Anomalies and Local Structure of Liquid Water from Boiling to the Supercooled Regime as Predicted by the Many-Body MB-pol Model

For the past 50 years, researchers have sought molecular models that can accurately reproduce water’s microscopic structure and thermophysical properties across broad ranges of its complex phase diagram. Herein, molecular dynamics simulations with the many-body MB-pol model are performed to monitor the thermodynamic response functions and local structure of liquid water from the boiling point down to deeply supercooled temperatures at ambient pressure. The isothermal compressibility and isobaric heat capacity show maxima near 223 K, in excellent agreement with recent experiments, and the liquid density exhibits a minimum at ~208 K. A local tetrahedral arrangement, where each water molecule accepts and donates two hydrogen bonds, is found to be the most probable hydrogen-bonding topology at all temperatures. Further, this work suggests that MB-pol may provide predictive capability for studies of liquid water’s physical properties across broad ranges of thermodynamic states, including the so-called water’s “no man’s land” which is difficult to probe experimentally.

Transferable Water Potentials Using Equivariant Neural Networks

Machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs) have emerged as a technique that promises quantum theory accuracy for reduced cost. It has been proposed [J. Chem. Phys. 2023, 158, 084111] that MLIPs trained on solely liquid water data cannot accurately transfer to the vapor–liquid equilibrium while recovering the many-body decomposition (MBD) analysis of gas-phase water clusters. This suggests that MLIPs do not directly learn the physically correct interactions of water molecules, limiting transferability. In this work, we show that MLIPs using equivariant architecture and trained on 3200 liquid water structures reproduces liquid-phase water properties (e.g., density within 0.003 g/cm 3 between 230 and 365 K), vapor–liquid equilibrium properties up to 550 K, the MBD analysis of gas-phase water cluster up to six-body interactions, and the relative energy and the vibrational density of states of ice phases. We show that potentials developed using equivariant MLIPs allow transferability for arbitrary phases of water that remain stable in nanosecond long simulations.
