The occultation of Epsilon Geminorum by Mars as observed at Princeton

Results are reported for two-color (red and blue) high-speed photometric observations of the April 8, 1976, occultation of Epsilon Gem by Mars. The observing system is briefly described, fits to an isothermal atmospheric model of the event are presented, and the blue data are used to derive temperature profiles of the Martian atmosphere in the manner of Wasserman and Veverka (1973). The results are compared with those of Elliot et al. (1977), which were obtained from the NASA Kuiper Airborne Observatory.

Multibaseline - A precision ground based geodetic measurement technique

The multibaseline geometric measurement system and its capabilities are described. Station inplane coordinates can always be determined to subcentimeter accuracy by use of one- or two-color geodolites as the fundamental measuring devices; for a given station constellation only one station needs to be substantially out of the plane in order to permit determination of the remaining near inplane coordinates. A realistic simulation of the Palmdale, California geodimeter network is presented, and the equivalence between a static multilateration system and the multibaseline system is established. The extension of local networks to wider monitoring grids is considered.

Far ultraviolet photometry of intermediate brightness stars from Apollo-Soyuz

We present photoelectric photometry in the 1350-1600 A band of 52 stars of intermediate brightness, using data obtained in 1975 July with a grazing incidence telescope aboard the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. Upper or lower limits on the brightness of 106 additional objects which were spatially blended with one or more companions were also obtained. The data sample consists of stars with V not greater than 7.5 and spectral types from O6 through A5. When corrected for interstellar extinction, the ultraviolet photometry on a two-color diagram agrees very well with the predictions of the revised blanketed model atmospheres by Kurucz. Attention is also drawn to an anomalously UV-bright object which is probably associated with HD 100493.

LDV measurements on propellers

Laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) measurements of the flow velocity around high-efficiency propeller blades for high disk loading turboprop propulsion systems are reported. The wind-tunnel flow around sets of eight straight and swept propeller blades with the same twist and chord distributions was measured using a conventional two-color dual scatter LDV system. The measurements of the axial flow velocities a small distance in front of the propeller blade, between the blade row, and downstream of the propeller are shown to provide information necessary for the determination of overall performance, swirl angle distribution, blade loading distributions, local lift and drag coefficients, interference effects, shock location, local induced velocities, wake characteristics and stall pattern.

The photometric properties of brightest cluster galaxies. I - Absolute magnitudes in 116 nearby Abell clusters

Two-color aperture photometry of the brightest galaxies in a complete sample of nearby Abell clusters is presented. The results are used to anchor the bright end of the Hubble diagram; essentially the entire formal error for this method is then due to the sample of distant clusters used. New determinations of the systematic trend of galaxy absolute magnitude with the cluster properties of richness and Bautz-Morgan type are derived. When these new results are combined with the Gunn and Oke (1975) data on high-redshift clusters, a formal value (without accounting for any evolution) of q sub 0 = -0.55 + or - 0.45 (1 standard deviations) is found.

High-speed photometry of the 11 December 1979 Juno occultation

The occultation of SAO 115946 by Juno on 11 December 1979 was observed from two sites in southern California with portable two-color, high-speed photometers. A composite light curve was constructed from the data by suitable scaling of individual observations, using an astrometric solution for the location of the contact points on Juno's limb. The preliminary astrometric solution used here has a semiminor axis of 118 km and a semimajor axis of 145 km at position angle 75.5 deg. The composite light curve is compatible with a stellar radius of (1.6 + or - 0.8) x 10 to the -4th arcsec, consistent with the radius estimated from the color and visual magnitude. There is no evidence for any companions to SAO 115946 or Juno. The prospects for use of asteroid occultations to determine stellar radii and asteroid surface slopes are discussed as compared with the lunar occultation technique.

The galactic center - 16-30 micron observations and the 18 micron extinction

Within the galactic center, ionized gas, stars, and heated dust are in close proximity to each other. Observations of the galactic center were made during two flight series on NASA aircraft flying at altitudes of more than 12 km. In both series the instrument used was a 10-channel liquid helium cooled grating spectrometer. Three 16-30 micrometers continuum spectra are presented along with two-color scans of the galactic center. No 18.71 micrometers line emission has been detected from Sgr A West. This is consistent with large dust extinction and normal S III/H II abundances. All three 16-30 micrometers continuum spectra show a broad depression centered at about 18 micrometers. This observation is attributed to absorption by cold silicate dust grains. The characteristics of a silicate model are discussed.

Application of the laser Doppler velocimeter in aerodynamic flows

Applications of the laser doppler velocimeter (LDV) are discussed. Measurements were made of the flowfield around a tangent-ogive model in a low turbulent, incompressible flow at an incidence of 45 deg. The free-stream velocity was 80 ft per second. The flowfield velocities in several cross-flow planes were measured with a 2-D, two-color LDC operated in a backscatter mode. Measurements were concentrated in the secondary separation region. A typical survey is given. The survey was taken at a model location where the maximum side force occurs. The overall character of the leeward flowfield with the influence of the two body vorticles are shown. Measurements of the velocity and density flowfields in the shock-layer region of a reentry-vehicle indented nose configuration were carried out at Mach 5. The velocity flowfield was measured with a 2-color, 2-D, forward-scatter LDV system. Because of the need to minimize particle lag in the shock-layer region, polystyrene particles with a mean diameter of 0.312 microns were used for the scattering particles. The model diameter was 6 inches.

Photopolarimetry from Voyager 2 - Preliminary results on Saturn, Titan, and the rings

The Voyager 2 photopolarimeter was reprogrammed prior to the August 1981 Saturn encounter to perform orthogonal-polarization, two-color measurements on Saturn, Titan, and the rings. Saturn's atmosphere has ultraviolet limb brightening in the mid-latitudes and pronounced polar darkening north of 65 deg N. Titan's opaque atmosphere shows strong positive polarization at all phase angles (2.7 deg to 154 deg), and no single-size spherical particle model appears to fit the data. A single radial stellar occultation of the darkened, shadowed rings indicated a ring thickness of less than 200 meters at several locations and clear evidence for density waves caused by satellite resonances. Multiple, very narrow strands of material were found in the Encke division and within the brightest single strand of the F ring.

Observations of the rapid oscillations of EM Cygni

High-speed two-color photometric observations have been made of the dwarf nova EM Cyg and rapid coherent oscillations with periods between 14.6 and 16.5 sec have been found. The minimum period is less than the period of a Keplerian orbit at the surface of a carbon white dwarf. The color temperature of the oscillating component is much higher than that of the constant component of the luminosity. These results suggest that the source of the oscillations is the white dwarf or the inner part of the accretion disk.

Airborne laser ranging system for monitoring regional crustal deformation

Alternate approaches for making the atmospheric correction without benefit of a ground-based meteorological network are discussed. These include (1) a two-color channel that determines the atmospheric correction by measuring the time delay induced by dispersion between pulses at two optical frequencies; (2) single-color range measurements supported by an onboard temperature sounder, pressure altimeter readings, and surface measurements by a few existing meteorological facilities; and (3) inclusion of the quadratic polynomial coefficients as variables to be solved for along with target coordinates in the reduction of the single-color range data. It is anticipated that the initial Airborne Laser Ranging System (ALRS) experiments will be carried out in Southern California in a region bounded by Santa Barbara on the norht and the Mexican border on the south. The target area will be bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west and will extend eastward for approximately 400 km. The unique ability of the ALRS to provide a geodetic 'snapshot' of such a large area will make it a valuable geophysical tool.

Multicolor laser altimeter for barometric measurements over the ocean - Theoretical

It is noted that the optical path length from a satellite to the earth's surface strongly depends on the atmospheric pressure along the propagation path. The theoretical basis of a surface pressure measurement technique, which uses a two-color laser altimeter to observe the change with wavelength in the optical path length from a satellite to the ocean surface, is evaluated. The statistical characteristics of the ocean-reflected pulses and the expected measurement accuracy are analyzed in terms of the altitude parameters. The results show that it is feasible to obtain a pressure accuracy of a few millibars.

Statistical characteristics of velocity, concentration, mass transport, and momentum transport for coaxial jet mixing in a confined duct

An experimental study of mixing downstream of coaxial jets discharging into an expanded circular duct was conducted to obtain data for the evaluation and improvement of turbulent transport models currently used for combustor flow modeling. A combination of turbulent momentum transport rate and two velocity component data was obtained from simultaneous measurements with a two-color LV system. A combination of turbulent mass transport rate, concentration and velocity data was obtained from simultaneous measurements with laser velocimeter (LV) and laser induced fluorescence (LIF) systems. These measurements were used to obtain mean, second central moment, skewness and kurtosis values for three velocity components and the concentration. These measurements showed the existence of countergradient turbulent axial mass transport where the annular jet fluid was accelerating the inner jet fluid. Results from the study are related to the assumptions employed in the current mass and momentum turbulent transport models.

Development and implementation of advanced diagnostic techniques

Two techniques were identified which offer great potential in the measurement of sprays. The first is referred to as IMAX, and it consists of a nonintrusive pulse height analyzer. The second is referred to as Visibility/Intensity (V/I) and it performs a size measurement by examining the visibility and the pedestal intensity that the IMAX technique provides a larger dynamic range and higher accuracy than V/I. It also shows that the two-color IMAX concept provides a higher S/N primarily because of the high efficiency in spectrally separating the two signals. The size distribution of two kinds of sprays are reported. The first spray was produced by a Berglund-Liu droplet generator with dispersion air. The second spray was produced by a pressure nozzle.

Turbulent swirling combustion

The non-reacting flow produced by two confined, co- and/or counter-swirling jets wre measured by means of a two-color laser Doppler velocimeter. These results are compared with earlier experiments and with numerical predictions. It is shown that under both swirl conditions, a closed recirculation zone is created at the combustor center line. This zone is characterized by the presence of a one-cell toroidal vortex, low tangential velocities, high turbulent intensity, and large dissipation rates of the kinetic energy of turbulence.

Theoretical and experimental analysis of laser altimeters for barometric measurements over the ocean

The statistical characteristics and the waveforms of ocean-reflected laser pulses are studied. The received signal is found to be corrupted by shot noise and time-resolved speckle. The statistics of time-resolved speckle and its effects on the timing accuracy of the receiver are studied in the general context of laser altimetry. For estimating the differential propagation time, various receiver timing algorithms are proposed and their performances evaluated. The results indicate that, with the parameters of a realistic altimeter, a pressure measurement accuracy of a few millibars is feasible. The data obtained from the first airborne two-color laser altimeter experiment are processed and analyzed. The results are used to verify the pressure measurement concept.

High-efficiency solar cells fabricated by vacuum MO-CVD

High-efficiency, monolithic, two-color, three-terminal solar cells were fabricated by a novel growth technique, vacuum metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The technique uses the expensive metal alkyls efficiently and toxic gases sparingly. The fact that the outer chamber is constructed of nonbreakable stainless steel is an attractive safety feature associated with this deposition system.

Determination of Flame Temperatures from 2000 to 3000 K by Microwave Absorption

Equations are derived for the measurement of flame temperatures from the attenuation of a microwave beam by temperature-induced free electrons from chemical elements introduced in the flame. Corrections are developed to account for the electron distribution in the flame. Procedure for obtaining the temperature from absorption is outlined. The free electron collision frequency and an effective ionization potential for four alkali elements were determined experimentally. The data were taken on a gas burner with a temperature range from 1900deg to 2400deg K. The effective ionization potential of sodium agrees with the spectral-line limit value. From these experimental ionization potentials and the experimental collision frequency, an accuracy of +/-600 K in the temperature was obtained. Fluctuating and average temperature data of a liquid propellant burner are presented primarily from 1.25-centimeter-wavelength microwave measurements in comparison with simultaneous two-color pyrometer and sound intensity measurements in the region from 2200deg to 2900deg K.
