Measurement of the near-threshold 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction cross section with the CLAS12 experiment

We present measurements of the total and differential cross sections for near-threshold 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction obtained with the CLAS12 detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The results are based on data collected during the fall 2018 and spring 2019 running periods, using electron beams with energies of 10.6 and 10.2 GeV, respectively, scattered off a liquid-hydrogen target. Near-threshold 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction offers a unique sensitivity to the strong interaction in the nonperturbative regime of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The energy dependence of the cross section constrains the underlying 𝐽/𝜓 production mechanisms, including multigluon exchange and potential baryonic excitations. Additionally, the 𝑡 dependence of the differential cross section can be related to the transverse spatial distribution of gluons in the proton, providing critical input for theoretical descriptions of the gluonic structure of the proton. An interpretation of the results in terms of the gluon content of the proton is presented, providing new experimental constraints on QCD-inspired models of the proton structure and the role of gluonic degrees of freedom in hadronic mass generation.

Measurements of the inclusive W and Z boson production cross sections and their ratios in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13.6$ TeV

Measurements are presented of the W and Z boson production cross sections in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13.6 TeV. Data collected in 2022 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.01 fb −1 with one or two identified muons in the final state are analyzed. The results for the products of total inclusive cross sections and branching fractions for muonic decays of W and Z bosons are 11.93 ± 0.08 (syst) ± 0.17 (lumi) $^{+0.07}_{−0.07}$ (acceptance) nb for W + boson production, 8.86 ± 0.06 (syst) ± 0.12 (lumi) $^{+0.05}_{−0.06}$ (acceptance) nb for W − boson production, and 2.021 ± 0.009 (syst) ± 0.028 (lumi) $^{+0.011}_{−0.013}$ (acceptance) nb for the Z boson production in the dimuon mass range of 60–120 GeV, all with negligible statistical uncertainties. Furthermore, the corresponding fiducial cross sections, as well as cross section ratios for both fiducial and total phase space, are provided. The ratios include charge-separated results for W boson production (W + and W − ) and the sum of the two contributions (W ± ), each relative to the measured Z boson production cross section. Additionally, the ratio of the measured cross sections for W + and W − boson production is reported. All measurements are in agreement with theoretical predictions, calculated at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in quantum chromodynamics.

Search for diphoton resonances in the 66 to 110 GeV mass range using pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is performed for light, spin-0 bosons decaying into two photons in the 66 to 110 GeV mass range, using 140 fb −1 of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV produced by the Large Hadron Collider and collected by the ATLAS detector. Multivariate analysis techniques are used to define event categories that improve the sensitivity to new resonances beyond the Standard Model. A model-independent search for a generic spin-0 particle and a model-dependent search for an additional low-mass Higgs boson are performed in the diphoton invariant mass spectrum. No significant excess is observed in either search. Mass-dependent upper limits at the 95% confidence level are set in the model-independent scenario on the fiducial cross-section times branching ratio into two photons in the range of 8 fb to 53 fb. Similarly, in the model-dependent scenario upper limits are set on the total cross-section times branching ratio into two photons as a function of the Higgs boson mass in the range of 19 fb to 102 fb.

Precise measurement of nuclear interaction cross sections towards neutron-skin determination with R 3 B

The R 3 B (Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) experiment as a major instrument of the NUSTAR collaboration for the research facility FAIR in Darmstadt is designed for kinematically complete studies of reactions with high-energy radioactive beams. Part of the broad physics program of R 3 B is to constrain the asymmetry term in the nuclear equation-of-state and hence improve the description of highly asymmetric nuclear matter (e.g., in neutron stars). For a precise determination of the neutron-skin thickness – an observable which is directly correlated with the symmetry energy in theoretical calculations – by measuring absolute fragmentation cross sections, it is essential to quantify the uncertainty and challenge the reaction model under stable conditions. During the successful FAIR Phase-0 campaign of R 3 B, we precisely measured the energy dependence of total interaction cross sections in 12 C + 12 C collisions, for a direct comparison with calculations based on the eikonal reaction theory.

Measurement of inclusive jet cross section and substructure in 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV

The jet cross section and jet-substructure observables in 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =200 GeV were measured by the PHENIX Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Jets are reconstructed from charged-particle tracks and electromagnetic-calorimeter clusters using the anti-𝑘 𝑡 algorithm with a jet radius of 𝑅 = 0.3 for jets with transverse momentum within 8.0 < 𝑝 𝑇 < 40.0 GeV/𝑐 and pseudorapidity |𝜂| < 0.15. Measurements include the jet cross section, as well as distributions of SoftDrop-groomed momentum fraction (𝑧 𝑔 ), charged-particle transverse momentum with respect to jet axis (𝑗 𝑇 ), and radial distributions of charged particles within jets (𝑟). Also measured was the distribution of 𝜉 = −ln⁡(𝑧), where 𝑧 is the fraction of the jet momentum carried by the charged particle. The measurements are compared to theoretical next-to and next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations, the PYTHIA and H erwig event generators, and to other existing experimental results. Indicated from these measurements is a lower particle multiplicity in jets at RHIC energies when compared to models. Also noted are implications for future jet measurements with sPHENIX at RHIC as well as at the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Stairway to discovery: A report on the CMS programme of cross section measurements from millibarns to femtobarns

The Large Hadron Collider at CERN, delivering proton-proton collisions at much higher energies and far higher luminosities than previous machines, has enabled a comprehensive programme of measurements of the standard model (SM) processes by the CMS experiment. These unprecedented capabilities facilitate precise measurements of the properties of a wide array of processes, the most fundamental being cross sections. The discovery of the Higgs boson and the measurement of its mass became the keystone of the SM. Knowledge of the mass of the Higgs boson allows precision comparisons of the predictions of the SM with the corresponding measurements. These measurements span the range from one of the most copious SM processes, the total inelastic cross section for proton-proton interactions, to the rarest ones, such as Higgs boson pair production. They cover the production of Higgs bosons, top quarks, single and multibosons, and hadronic jets. Associated parameters, such as coupling constants, are also measured. These cross section measurements can be pictured as a descending stairway, on which the lowest steps represent the rarest processes allowed by the SM, some never seen before.

R ( 3780 ) Resonance Interpreted as the 1 D 1 3 -Wave Dominant State of Charmonium from Precise Measurements of the Cross Section of e + e − → Hadrons

We report the precise measurements of the cross section of e + e − → hadrons at center-of-mass energies from 3.645 to 3.871 GeV. We thereby perform the most precise study of the cross sections and find a complex system composed of three resonances of R ( 3760 ) , R ( 3780 ) , and R ( 3810 ) . For the first time, we measure the R ( 3810 ) electronic width to be ( 19.4 ± 7.4 ± 12.1 ) eV . For the R ( 3760 ) resonance, we measure the mass to be ( 3751.9 ± 3.8 ± 2.8 ) MeV / c 2 , the total width to be ( 32.8 ± 5.8 ± 8.7 ) MeV , and the electronic width to be ( 184 ± 75 ± 86 ) eV . For the R ( 3780 ) resonance, we measure its mass to be ( 3778.7 ± 0.5 ± 0.3 ) MeV / c 2 , total width to be ( 20.3 ± 0.8 ± 1.7 ) MeV , and electronic width to be ( 265 ± 67 ± 83 ) eV . Forty-seven years ago, the ψ ( 3770 ) resonance was discovered, and was subsequently interpreted as the 1 D 1 3 -wave dominant state of charmonium. However, our analysis of the total-hadron cross sections indicates that the ψ ( 3770 ) is not a single state, but a complex system composed of the R ( 3760 ) , R ( 3780 ) , and R ( 3810 ) resonances. Among these, we interpret the R ( 3780 ) is a resonance dominated by the 1 D 1 3 charmonium state. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Entanglement, trace anomaly, and confinement in QCD

We formulate confinement in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) as an entropic surface phenomenon. Quark and gluon quantum information is localized on a transverse, entangling two-sphere of radius 𝑅 𝐸⁢𝐸 ; at this radius the QCD vacuum—partitioned by a hadron into interior and exterior regions—reaches its maximal entanglement entropy. Lattice-QCD determinations of the scalar (trace) gravitational form factors fix both 𝑅 𝐸⁢𝐸 and the transverse trace-anomaly density 𝜌 ℎ ⁡(𝑅 𝐸⁢𝐸 ), yielding a parameter-free slope 𝑐 ℎ = 8⁢𝜋 2 ⁢𝑅𝑆$^2_{𝐸⁢𝐸}$𝜌 ℎ ⁡(𝑅 𝐸⁢𝐸 ) and a mechanical entropy 𝑆 𝐸⁢𝐸 ⁡(𝑦) = 𝑐 ℎ ⁢𝑦 that grows linearly with rapidity 𝑦. The entropy gradient ∂ 𝑅 𝑆 𝐸⁢𝐸 changes sign at 𝑅 𝐸⁢𝐸 : it pushes colored degrees of freedom outward for 𝑟 <𝑅 𝐸⁢𝐸 and pulls them inward for 𝑟 >𝑅 𝐸⁢𝐸 , thereby localizing them on the codimension-2 entangling two-sphere Σ ⊥ = 𝑆$^2_{𝑅_{𝐸⁢𝐸}}$ (which, in the infinite-momentum frame (IMF), projects onto the transverse plane)—the “information wall.” This provides a high-energy (large-𝑦) entropic confinement diagnostic that complements—rather than replaces—Wilson’s area-law criterion, which probes long-distance dynamics near the rest frame (𝑦 → 0). Imposing unitarity on an entropic ansatz for the amplitude yields 𝜎⁡(𝑠) ∝ 𝑦 𝛿 . World data favor 𝛿 = 2 for elastic 𝑝⁡𝑝⁡($𝑝\bar{⁡𝑝}$) scattering and heavy-quark photoproduction, whereas 𝜙 photoproduction favors a softer 𝛿 = 0.387. All extracted cross sections remain well below the Froissart-Martin bound. These results provide a confinement criterion quantified directly from nonperturbative QCD inputs, unifying the trace anomaly, entanglement entropy, and high-energy scattering within a single quantitative framework.

First Measurement of 87 Rb( α , xn ) Cross Sections at Weak r -process Energies in Supernova ν -driven Ejecta to Investigate Elemental Abundances in Low-metallicity Stars

Observed abundances of Z ∼ 40 elements in metal-poor stars vary from star to star, indicating that the rapid and slow neutron capture processes may not contribute alone to the synthesis of elements beyond iron. The weak r-process was proposed to produce Z ∼ 40 elements in a subset of old stars. Thought to occur in the ν-driven ejecta of a core-collapse supernova, ( α, xn ) reactions would drive the nuclear flow toward heavier masses at T = 2−5 GK. However, current comparisons between modeled and observed yields do not bring satisfactory insights into the stellar environment, mainly due to the uncertainties of the nuclear physics inputs where the dispersion in a given reaction rate often exceeds 1 order of magnitude. Involved rates are calculated with the statistical model where the choice of an α -optical-model potential ( α OMP) leads to such a poor precision. The first experiment on 87 Rb( α, xn ) reactions at weak r -process energies is reported here. Total inclusive cross sections were assessed at E c.m. = 8.1−13 MeV (3.7−7.6 GK) with the active target MUlti-Sampling Ionization Chamber. With an N = 50 seed nucleus, the measured values agree with statistical model estimates using the α OMP Atomki-V2. A reevaluated reaction rate was incorporated into new nucleosynthesis calculations, focusing on ν-driven ejecta conditions known to be sensitive to this specific rate. These conditions were found to fail to reproduce the lighter heavy element abundances in metal-poor stars.

Cross sections of 𝜂 mesons in 𝑝 +𝑝 collisions at forward rapidity at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 500 GeV and central rapidity at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 510 GeV

We present the first measurements of the forward and midrapidity 𝜂-meson cross sections from 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 500 and 510 GeV, respectively. We also report the midrapidity 𝜂/𝜋 0 ratio at 510 GeV. The forward cross section is measured differentially in 𝜂-meson transverse momentum (𝑝 𝑇 ) from 1.0 to 6.5 GeV/𝑐 for pseudorapidity 3.0 < |𝜂| < 3.8. The midrapidity cross section is measured from 3.5 to 44 GeV/𝑐 for pseudorapidity |𝜂| < 0.35. Both cross sections serve as critical inputs to an updated global analysis of the 𝜂-meson fragmentation functions.

Search for the 𝑌⁡(2175) in the Photoproduction Cross Section Measurement of 𝛾⁢𝑝 → 𝜙⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑝 at GlueX

Based on 334 pb −1 of photoproduction data collected with the GlueX detector at Jefferson Lab, we have measured for the first time the cross section of the exclusive reaction 𝛾+𝑝→𝜙⁡(1020)⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑝 by reconstructing the final state 𝐾 +⁢ 𝐾 − ⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑝 produced with a photon beam of energies between 8.0 and 11.6 GeV. Based on the measured differential cross section, we have performed a search for the strangeoniumlike exotic candidate 𝑌⁡(2175), recently renamed to 𝜙⁡(2170). This state has been reported by different 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − annihilation experiments and it is addressed here for the first time in a photoproduction experiment. We do not find evidence for this state when using the resonance parameters quoted by the Particle Data Group and provide upper limits on the photoproduction cross section. Instead, we find a structure at a mass of 𝑚⁡(𝜙⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ) = 2.24 GeV/𝑐 2 with a statistical significance of about 5⁢𝜎. The parameters of this structure differ from those quoted by the Particle Data Group for the 𝜙⁡(2170) and are consistent with a previous observation in 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − annihilation. In addition, there is evidence for a second structure at 1.82 GeV/𝑐 2 .

Improving resbos for the precision needs of the LHC

The resummation calculation (esos) is a widely used tool for the simulation of single vector boson production at colliders. In this work, we develop a significant improvement over the esos code by increasing the accuracy from NNLL + NLO to N 3 LL + NNLO and release the esos v2.0 code. Furthermore, we propose a new nonperturbative function that includes information about the rapidity of the system (IFY). The IFY functional form was fitted to data from fixed target experiments, the Tevatron, and the LHC. We find that the nonperturbative function has mild rapidity dependence based on the results of the fit. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

General mass variable flavor number scheme for 𝑍 boson production in association with a heavy quark at hadron colliders

We present a methodology to streamline implementation of massive-quark radiative contributions in calculations with a variable number of active partons in proton-proton collisions. The methodology introduces subtraction and residual heavy-quark parton distribution functions (PDFs) to implement calculations in the Aivazis–Collins–Olness–Tung (ACOT) factorization scheme and its simplified realization in various processes up to the next-to-the-next-to-leading order in the QCD coupling strength. Interpolation tables for bottom-quark subtraction and residual distributions for CT18 NLO and NNLO PDF ensembles are provided in the common LHAPDF6 format. A numerical calculation of 𝑍-boson production with at least one 𝑏 jet at the Large Hadron Collider beyond the lowest order in QCD is considered for illustration purposes.

Impact of Next-to-Leading-Order Weak Standard-Model-Effective-Field-Theory Corrections in e + e − → Z H

We present results from a complete next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation of e + e − → Z H in the standard model effective field theory (SMEFT) framework, including all contributions from dimension-six operators. At NLO, there are novel dependencies on CP violating parameters in the gauge sector, on modifications to the Higgs boson self-couplings, on alterations to the top quark Yukawa couplings, and on four-fermion operators involving the electron and the top quark, among others. We show that including only the logarithms resulting from renormalization group scaling can produce misleading results, and further, we explicitly demonstrate the constraining power of combining measurements from different energy scales. First Measurement of the Electron-Neutrino Charged-Current Pion Production Cross Section on Carbon with the T2K Near Detector

The T2K Collaboration presents the first measurement of electron neutrino-induced charged-current pion production on a predominantly carbon target in a restricted kinematical phase space. This is performed using data from the 2.5° off-axis near detector, ND280. The differential cross sections with respect to the outgoing electron and pion kinematics, in addition to the total flux-integrated cross section, are obtained. Comparisons between the measured and predicted cross-section results using the neut, genie, and nuwro Monte Carlo event generators are presented. The measured total flux-integrated cross section is [2.52 ± 0.52⁢(stat) ± 0.30⁢(syst)] × 10 −39 cm 2 nucleon −1 , which is lower than the event generator predictions.

Charm fragmentation fractions and $\mathbf {c\overline{c}}$ cross section in p–Pb collisions at $\mathbf {\sqrt{s _{NN}}=5.02 TeV}$

The total charm-quark production cross section per unit of rapidity dσ($\mathbf {c\overline{c}}$)/dy, and the fragmentation fractions of charm quarks to different charm-hadron species f(c → h c ), are measured for the first time in p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV at midrapidity (–0.96 < y < 0.04 in the centre-of-mass frame) using data collected by ALICE at the CERN LHC. The results are obtained based on all the available measurements of prompt production of ground-state charm-hadron species: D 0 , D + , D$^{+}_{s}$, and J/ψ mesons, and Λ$^{+}_{c}$ and $Ξ$$^{0}_{c}$ baryons. The resulting cross section is dσ($\mathbf {c\overline{c}}$)/dy = 219.6 ± 6.3 (stat.) $^{+10.5}_{–11.8}$ (syst.) $^{+8.3}_{–2.9}$ (extr.) ± 5.4 (BR) ± 4.6 (lumi.) ± 19.5 (rapidity shape) + 15.0 (Ω$^{0}_{c}$) mb, which is consistent with a binary scaling of pQCD calculations from pp collisions. The measured fragmentation fractions are compatible with those measured in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV, showing an increase in the relative production rates of charm baryons with respect to charm mesons in pp and p–Pb collisions compared with e + e – and e – p collisions. The p T -integrated nuclear modification factor of charm quarks, R pPb ($\mathbf {c\overline{c}}$) = 0.91 ± 0.04 (stat.) $^{+0.08}_{–0.09}$ (syst.) $^{+0.05}_{–0.03}$ (extr.) ± 0.03 (lumi.), is found to be consistent with unity and with theoretical predictions including nuclear modifications of the parton distribution functions.

Continuum contribution to charged-current absorption of low-energy $ν_e$ on $^{40}$Ar

Accurate modeling of the absorption of tens-of-MeV $ν_e$ on $^{40}$Ar is needed to enable measurements of astrophysical neutrinos using large liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) detectors, such as those planned for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). We revisit the MARLEY neutrino interaction model used in present estimates of DUNE sensitivity to supernova and solar neutrino signals. Multiple theoretical refinements are pursued, especially in the unbound continuum region of nuclear excitation energy. Inclusive charged-current neutrino-argon cross sections are calculated using a hybrid strategy. Nuclear transitions to unbound states are treated using a Hartree-Fock Continuum Random Phase Approximation (HF-CRPA) model, including forbidden contributions. Allowed transitions to low-lying discrete levels are also included using indirect measurements and approximate corrections for the momentum transfer dependence. Exclusive predictions are obtained by coupling these calculations with a statistical nuclear de-excitation model. The impact on observables of interest for DUNE and similar experiments is examined in terms of both total and differential cross sections. Our refined calculations predict a lower allowed portion of the cross section relative to the prior MARLEY model. At neutrino energies appreciably below 100 MeV, the inclusion of forbidden transitions does not fully compensate for the loss of allowed strength. For a representative neutrino burst from a galactic core-collapse supernova, our results suggest that MARLEY 1.2.0 overestimates the event yield in a DUNE-like detector by approximately 20%. However, because this overestimation is more severe at backwards angles, use of the charged-current $ν_e$-$^{40}$Ar reaction for supernova pointing may be more feasible than previously expected.

Search for same-charge top-quark pair production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for the production of top-quark pairs with the same electric charge ($tt$ or $\overline{tt}$) is presented. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb −1 . Events with two same-charge leptons and at least two b-tagged jets are selected. Neural networks are employed to define two selections sensitive to additional couplings beyond the Standard Model that would enhance the production rate of same-sign top-quark pairs. No significant signal is observed, leading to an upper limit on the total production cross-section of same-sign top-quark pairs of 1.6 fb at 95% confidence level. Corresponding limits on the three Wilson coefficients associated with the $\mathcal{O}^{(1)}_{tu}$, $\mathcal{O}^{(1)}_{Qu}$, and $\mathcal{O}^{(8)}_{Qu}$ operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory framework are derived.
