Reduced-Cost Four-Component Relativistic Double Ionization Potential Equation-of-Motion Coupled-Cluster Approaches with 4-Hole–2-Particle Excitations and Three-Body Clusters

The double ionization potential (DIP) equation-ofmotion (EOM) coupled-cluster (CC) method with 4-hole−2- particle (4h-2p) excitations on top of the CC with singles, doubles, and triples calculation, abbreviated as DIP-EOMCCSDT(4h-2p), along with its perturbative DIP-EOMCCSD(T)(a)(4h-2p) approximation, are extended to a relativistic four-component (4c) framework. In addition, we introduce and test a new computationally practical DIP-EOMCC approach, which we call DIPEOMCCSD( T)(ã)(4h-2p), that approximates the treatment of 4h- 2p correlations within the DIP-EOMCCSD(T)(a)(4h-2p) method and reduces the $\mathcal{N}$ 8 scaling characterizing DIP-EOMCCSDT(4h- 2p) and DIP-EOMCCSD(T)(a)(4h-2p) to $\mathcal{N}$ 7 with the system size $\mathcal{N}$. Further improvements in computational efficiency are obtained using the frozen natural spinor (FNS) approximation to reduce the numbers of unoccupied spinors entering the correlated steps of the DIP-EOMCC calculations according to a well-defined occupation-number-based threshold. The resulting 4c-FNS-DIPEOMCC approaches are used to compute DIPs for the series of inert gas atoms from argon to radon as well as the vertical DIPs in Cl 2 , Br 2 , HBr, and HI, which have been experimentally examined in the past. We demonstrate that, when using complete basis set extrapolations and FNS truncation threshold of 10 −4.5 , the 4c-FNS-DIP-EOMCCSD(T)(ã)(4h-2p) calculations are capable of predicting DIPs in agreement with experimental data, improving upon their nonrelativistic and spin-free scalar-relativistic counterparts, particularly when examining DIPs characterized by stronger spin−orbit coupling effects.

Three-body capture, ejection, and the demographics of bound objects in binary systems

ABSTRACT We study the capture of light objects of arbitrary velocity by binary systems. Extending results for the capture of comets in the Solar system, we develop a simple geometric characterization of the capture cross-section, leading directly to the distribution of orbital parameters of captured objects. We use the same framework to study the lifetimes of these bound orbits prior to ejection, and find that a simplified version of the Öpik–Arnold approach readily yields a closed-form estimate for the ejection rate that agrees well with numerical experiments. Without any detailed-balance assumptions, our results make manifest the characteristics of close encounters leading to capture and ejection. As an application of our results, we demonstrate the estimation of the equilibrium population of captured dark matter particles in a binary system.

Radiative three-body D -meson decays in and beyond the standard model

We study radiative charm decays D → P 1 P 2γ , P 1,2 = π, K in QCD factorization at leading order and within heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory. Branching ratios including resonance contributions are around ~10 –3 for the Cabibbo-favored modes into Kπγ and ~10 –5 for the singly Cabibbo-suppressed modes into π + π – γ,K + K – γ, and thus in reach of the flavor factories BES III and Belle II. Dalitz plots and forward–backward asymmetries reveal significant differences between the two QCD frameworks; such observables are therefore ideally suited for a data-driven identification of relevant decay mechanisms in the standard-model dominated D → Kπγ decays. This increases the potential to probe new physics with the D → π + π – γ and D → K + K – γ decays, which are sensitive to enhanced dipole operators. CP asymmetries are useful to test the SM and look for new physics in neutral |ΔC| = 1 transitions. Cuts in the Dalitz plot enhance the sensitivity to new physics due to the presence of both s- and t, u-channel intermediate resonances.

Analysis of Three Body Decays in Quasi-Real Photoproduction

This thesis presents preliminary measurements of the moments of angular distribution for the K?K+ mesonic final state using a quasi-real, linearly polarised photon. Two of the main points of focus for this analysis were the development of the formalism for photoproduced vector-pseudoscalar decay and the tools by which the analysis was carried out. The formalism described how the moments of angular distribution could be extracted from the angular decay variables, and how they related to resonance decays in terms of partial waves. In extracting the moments, it was found that adapted Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods proved to be more effective in terms of extracting results from the data compared to the sole use of gradient descent based fitting algorithms. These measurements are complementary to other decay channels and production mechanisms, with the global aim of probing the existence of exotic mesons. Data from this analysis was taken by the CLAS collaboration at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) by scattering from a liquid hydrogen target using a 10.6 GeV electron. This work was done within the MesonEx program at CLAS12 that aims to map the spectrum of mesons, and in doing so, gain a greater understanding of Quantum ChromoDynamics (QCD) and the strong force.

Mass-Energy Compensation Effect of 3$\alpha$ Hamiltonian

The 3α phenomenological model describes the structure of the carbon-12 nucleus as a cluster of three alpha particles. This model includes a pairwise α–α interaction and a three-body force. To fit the three-body potential, the 12 C data are used, while ensuring that the pair potential reproduces the α–α scattering data. Alternatively, the mass-energy compensation (MEC) effect can be used to simulate the effect of the three-body potential by adjusting the mass of the α particle within the effective-mass approach. We demonstrate the MEC effect for the 3α ground state by numerically solving the differential Faddeev equation, in which the α–α interaction is described by the Ali-Bodmer potential. The effective masses of α particles are evaluated for the ground and excited 0 + and bound 2 + states. Here, we demonstrate a coupling between the ground and first excited 0 + states, indicated by an anti-crossing of these energy levels in the energy–mass coordinates. A correspondence between the effective mass and a three-body potential is demonstrated. We discuss the results of the 0$^{+}_{2}$ calculations for various models of the α–α interaction.
