Central configurations and hyperbolic-elliptic motion in the three-body problem

A refined classification of motion for the planar three-body problem with zero-sum total energy is presented. The structure and dimensions of the sets of initial conditions leading to parabolic expansion or hyperbolic-elliptic motion are found. Attention is given to the use of the Hamiltonian of the system and to the two- and three-dimensional problem. It is verified that the new coordinates of position and linear momentum approaches limits as t (time) approaches infinity, and that these limits constitute equilibrium solutions to the three-body problem representing control configurations.

The effect of radiation pressure on the restricted three-body problem

The classical restricted three-body problem is extended to account for the effects of radiation pressure and the Poynting-Robertson effect on a particle with a surface-to-volume relation such that radiation pressure forces are nonnegligible moving in the gravitational field of two larger, orbiting bodies. The positions of the L4 and L5 Lagrangian points are found as functions of the ratio of radiational to gravitational forces. The inclusion of the Poynting-Robertson effect, however, is found to render the L4 and L5 points unstable on a time scale which is long compared to the rotation period of the two massive bodies. The results imply that space colonies with solar facing adjustable sails may be able to remain stationary at any heliocentric distance between a planet and the sun, and may provide a mechanism for producing asymmetries in the interplanetary dust cloud.

A note on relative motion in the general three-body problem.

It is shown that the equations of the general three-body problem take on a very symmetric form when one considers only their relative positions, rather than position vectors relative to some given coordinate system. From these equations one quickly surmises some well known classical properties of the three-body problem, such as the first integrals and the equilateral triangle solutions. Some new Lagrangians with relative coordinates are also obtained. Numerical integration of the new equations of motion is about 10% faster than with barycentric or heliocentric coordinates.

Notes on the restricted three body problem- approximate behavior of solutions near the collinear lagrangian points

Studies the solutions of the restricted three-body problem near those equilibrium points which are collinear with the two positive masses. This is done to gain insight toward the development of an analytic proof and classification of the periodic orbits that pass near these equilibrium points, which have been discovered numerically by M. Davidson, and also to hopefully gain insight into the nature of solutions of the restricted three-body problem in general. The qualitative observations that are made are all deduced from the linearized equations.

Periodic orbits of the general three-body problem for the sun-Jupiter-Saturn system

Two families of symmetric periodic orbits of the planar, general, three-body problem are presented. The masses of the three bodies include ratios equal to the sun-Jupiter-Saturn system and the periods of the orbits of Jupiter and Saturn are in a 2:5 resonance. The (linear) stability of the orbits are studied in relation to eccentricity and mass variations. The generation of the two families of periodic orbits follows a systematic approach and employs (numerical) continuation from periodic orbits of the first and second kind in the circular restricted problem to the elliptic restricted problem and from the circular and elliptic problems to the general problem through bifurcation phenomena relating the three dynamical systems. The approach also provides insight into the evolutionary process of periodic orbits continued from the restricted problems to the general problem.

Three-body Coulomb systems using generalized angular-momentum S states

An expansion of the three-body Coulomb potential in generalized angular-momentum eigenfunctions developed earlier by one of the authors is used to compute energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of bound S states of three-body Coulomb systems. The results for He, H(-), e(-)e(+)e(-), and pmu(-)p are compared with the results of other computational approaches.
