Study of tellurium precipitates in CdTe crystals

The effect of tellurium precipitates was studied in medium resistivity (10 exp 3-10 exp 6 ohm cm) undoped and Cl-doped CdTe using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and mid-infrared spectroscopy and the results were correlated with near-infrared microscopy photographs. When present in a significant quantity (about 0.25 wt pct), we show that Te precipitates are detectable using DSC measurements. In the mid-infrared, the contribution of the absorption by free-carriers is negligible, and therefore, the effect of the Te precipitates in these crystals can be considered uncoupled from the effects of Cd vacancies.

Removal of fission product tellurium and iodine from recently irradiated HEU using copper metal

Gamma detection of select fission products or activation products such as 153 Sm and 239 Np in a fission sample is difficult due to gamma interferences from radiotellurium and radioiodine. To aid in the detection of these difficult-to-detect nuclides, the radiotellurium and radioiodine were removed using Cu metal turnings. This method is highly effective at the removal of the interfering radionuclides removing > 98% of the radiotellurium and radioiodine. A mechanistic study was conducted. Determining the deposition mechanism, using a number of techniques including XANES and electrochemistry providing an understanding of the electrochemical path for the Te deposition. Initial work focused on the use of stable Te, further expanding into activated TeO 2 , and a fresh fission sample. Importantly, this method presents a rapid method for the direct detection of select fission products that could have a significant impact on nuclear related fields including nuclear forensics.

Spectral Performance of Multilayer Amorphous Selenium and Selenium–Tellurium Photodetectors

The ability to robustly and with scalability detect single photons in the visible spectrum with wavelength resolution would transform many imaging applications. Theoretical studies propose an array of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) functionalized with semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) as a physical realization of such photon sensors. In this work, we report approaches to synthesize these CNT-QD nanostructures using DNA as a smart glue to connect CNTs to QDs.

Control of iodine and tellurium for use in domestic molybdenum-99 production efforts

Three initial proof-of-concept experiments were performed to test the removal of I and Te from solutions containing Mo for potential abatement during chemical processing to purify 99 Mo. All three proof-of-concept experiments produced results indicating that further optimization could provide methods for I and/or Te abatement from multiple matrices. Decamp and Happel (2013) describe the use of CL resin from Eichrom Technologies loaded with Ag + combined with Amberlite XAD-4 in the chromatographic separation of irradiated fission products in 1 M HNO 3 to separate iodine species where iodide and iodate react with Ag + and I2 adheres to the Amberlite resin. The method worked well under processing conditions in a medical isotope facility although many separation methods use higher concentrations of HNO 3 which could adversely impact the Ag + loading. The experiment performed here used a roughly 2 mL column of CL resin loaded with Ag + and Amberlite XAD-4 to separate µg quantities of I, Te, and Mo in 3 M HNO 3 .

Effect of tellurium concentration on the corrosion and mechanical properties of 304 stainless steel in molten FLiNaK salt

In this study, the effect of Te concentration in molten FLiNaK salt on the corrosion and mechanical properties of 304 stainless steel was investigated. The corrosion depth of samples after the immersion tests for 48 h at 600 °C decreased with increasing Te concentration. Likewise, the sample after the immersion test containing 1.0 wt% of Te (1.0 wt% Te sample) showed less reduction in mechanical properties than the 0.1 wt% Te sample. We hypothesize that the condition for a Cr-oxide layer that has the protective property is fulfilled underneath the Ni-Fe rich layer which is formed by the selective leaching of Cr.

Phonon Spectroscopy in Antimony and Tellurium Oxides

α-Sb 2 O 3 (senarmontite), β-Sb 2 O 3 (valentinite), and α-TeO 2 (paratellurite) are compounds with pronounced stereochemically active Sb and Te lone pairs. The vibrational and lattice properties of each have been previously studied but often lead to incomplete or unreliable results due to modes being inactive in infrared or Raman spectroscopy. Here in this paper, we present a study of the relationship between bonding and lattice dynamics of these compounds. Mössbauer spectroscopy is used to study the structure of Sb in α-Sb 2 O 3 and β-Sb 2 O 3 , whereas the vibrational modes of Sb and Te for each oxide are investigated using nuclear inelastic scattering, and further information on O vibrational modes is obtained using inelastic neutron scattering. Additionally, vibrational frequencies obtained by density functional theory (DFT) calculations are compared with experimental results in order to assess the validity of the utilized functional. Good agreement was found between DFT-calculated and experimental density of phonon states with a 7% scaling factor. The Sb–O–Sb wagging mode of α-Sb 2 O 3 whose frequency was not clear in most previous studies is experimentally observed for the first time at ~340 cm -1 . Softer lattice vibrational modes occur in orthorhombic β-Sb 2 O 3 compared to cubic α-Sb 2 O 3 , indicating that the antimony bonds are weakened upon transforming from the molecular α phase to the layer-chained β structure. The resulting vibrational entropy increase of 0.45 ± 0.1 kB/Sb 2 O 3 at 880 K accounts for about half of the α–β transition entropy. The comparison of experimental and theoretical approaches presented here provides a detailed picture of the lattice dynamics in these oxides beyond the zone center and shows that the accuracy of DFT is sufficient for future calculations of similar material structures.

Momentum-Resolved Direct Observation of Chiral Phonons in Elemental Tellurium

Chiral phonons carry finite phonon angular momentum, yet their momentum-resolved behavior in acoustic branches remains largely unexplored. In this work, we report the direct detection of chiral acoustic phonons in elemental Te. Through a combination of high-energy-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering experiments and atomistic modeling, we confirm that longitudinal acoustic modes develop pronounced circular atomic motion by mixing with transverse modes. Our results establish a direct link between unexpected scattering intensity in nominally forbidden geometries and circular phonons, offering a framework for characterizing momentum-resolved phonon chirality and highlighting the emergence of intrinsic phonon angular momentum in acoustic branches.

The Electrochemical Behavior of Tellurium Tetrachloride in LiCl-KCl Eutectic Molten Salt at 450 ºC

Cyclic voltammetry CV), square wave voltammetry (SWV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were carried out in 1 and 5 wt% TeCl 4 containing LiCl-KCl eutectic molten salt at 450 °C using tungsten and glassy carbon as working electrodes. Reduction of Te(IV) to Te(0) occurred in three steps at potentials more negative than -0.4 V Ag/AgCl . The Te(0) was further reduced to Te 2- at more negative potentials. Formation of Te 2- was observed at potentials more negative than -2.2 V Ag/AgCl . Diffusivities of Te 4+ , Te 2+ , and Te 2- and their formal potentials were estimated from the CV data. The diffusion coefficients of Te 4+ , Te 2+ and Te 2- were 0.9 × 10 -5 , 3.8 × 10 -5 , and 1.5 × 10 -5 cm 2 s -1 , respectively in the 1 wt% TeCl 4 containing LiCl-KCl molten salt. The diffusivity of Te species generally decreased with increase in the concentration of TeCl 4 .
