MEVTV Workshop on Early Tectonic and Volcanic Evolution of Mars

Although not ignored, the problems of the early tectonic and volcanic evolution of Mars have generally received less attention than those later in the evolution of the planet. Specifically, much attention was devoted to the evolution of the Tharsis region of Mars and to the planet itself at the time following the establishment of this major tectonic and volcanic province. By contrast, little attention was directed at fundamental questions, such as the conditions that led to the development of Tharsis and the cause of the basic fundamental dichotomy of the Martian crust. It was to address these and related questions of the earliest evolution of Mars that a workshop was organized under the auspices of the Mars: Evolution of Volcanism, Tectonism, and Volatiles (MEVTV) Program. Four sessions were held: crustal dichotomy; crustal differentiation/volcanism; Tharsis, Elysium, and Valles Marineris; and ridges and fault tectonics.

Iapetus: Tectonic structure and geologic history

Many papers have been written about the surface of Iapetus, but most of these have discussed either the nature of the strongly contrasting light and dark materials or the cratering record. Little has been said about other geologic features on Iapetus, such as tectonic structures, which would provide constraints on Iapetus' thermal history. Most references have suggested that there is no conclusive evidence for any tectonic activity, even when thermal history studies indicate that there should be. However, a new study of Iapetus' surface involving the use of stereo pairs, an extensive tectonic network has been recognized. A few new observations concerning the craters and dark material were also made. Thus the geology and geologic history of Iapetus can be more fully outlined than before. The tectonic network is shown along with prominent craters and part of the dark material in the geologic/tectonic sketch map. The topology of crater rims and scarps are quite apparent and recognizable in the different image pairs. The heights and slopes of various features given are based on comparison with the depths of craters 50 to 100 km in diameter, which are assumed to have the same depths as craters of similar diameter on Rhea and Titania.

Global organization of tectonic deformation on Venus

The geographic organization of surface deformation on Venus as on Earth is a key to understanding the global tectonic system. To date we have mapped the distribution of three unambiguous tectonic land forms on Venus: (1) linear foldbelts analogous to those at plate margins of the Earth; (2) linear rift zones, analogous to continental rifts on the Earth; and (3) distributed plains deformation in the form of wrinkle ridges and extensional faults and fractures. The linear foldbelts are the dominant structural style in the Northern Hemisphere; ninety percent of the planet's foldbelts lie above the equator. In contrast, compressive deformation in the Southern Hemisphere is dominated by two large, sweeping patterns of wrinkle ridges. The two hemispheres are divided by an equatorial region that is largely covered by rift zones and several large tessera blocks. A tectonic model of generally poleward convergence of the Northern Hemisphere explains the distribution of foldbelts and rift zones. In our model, a northern hemispherical plate (or system of plates) moves poleward and deforms along discrete, predominately longitudinal bands. We recognize four types of foldbelts based on their relationships to other large-scale tectonic features on Venus. There are foldbelts that lie within the low plains, foldbelts associated with coronae, novae and chasmata, foldbelts that lie at the margins of poly-deformed tessera plateaus, and the folded mountain belts around Lakshmi Planum. We see a geometric increase in the area of fold belts when normalized to percent area at a given latitude. This increase is consistent with our model of poleward convergence. Also, the orientations of most foldbelts are either approximately north-south or parallel to lines of latitude in the northern hemisphere. This observation is also consistent with the model in that the longitudinal bands are the result of the decreasing area of the sphere as the plate moves poleward and the latitudinal belts are the direct result of poleward compression. The trends of wrinkle ridges have been mapped over the planet and several large, sweeping patterns evidently reflect long-wavelength topography. Using wrinkle ridges as paleostress indicators, we have developed local and regional stress trajectory maps.

Tectonics on Triton

Tectonic features on Triton have been mapped as part of a larger study of the geology of Triton. Few purely tectonic structures are found on Triton: some grabens and possibly some compressive ridges. However, most of the other structures seen (primarily cryovolcanic in origin) exhibit tectonic control. A regional tectonic network has the following dominant orientations: N-S, E-W, NE-SW, and NW-SE. Most of the orientations are consistent with tidal deformations related to Triton's decreasing orbital radius. Localized quasi-concentric patterns may be due to interior processes such as mantle plumes.

Transmantle flux tectonics

Venus, Earth, and Mars have surfaces that display topographic domes and depressions with quasi-circular planimetric shapes, relief of 0 to several km, and large spatial scales (10(exp 2) to 10(exp 4) km). Our morphostructural mapping reveals hierarchical arrangements of these features. They are explained by a model of long-acting mantle convection, as a particular case of convection in a stratified and random inhomogeneous medium, which develops the form of a hierarchy of different convective pattern scales, each arising from different levels in the mantle. The hypothesis of transmantle flux tectonics parsimoniously explains a diversity of seemingly unrelated terrestrial planetary phenomena, including Earth megaplumes, global resurfacing epochs on Venus, and cyclic ocean formation and global climate change for Mars. All these phenomenon are hypothesized to be parsimoniously explained by a process of transmantle flux tectonics in which long-acting mantle convection generates stresses in blocks of planetary lithosphere to produce distinctive quasi-circular global-hierarchical morphostructure (QGM) patterns. Transmantle flux tectonics differs from plume tectonics in that individual plumes are not considered in isolation. Rather, a wholly interactive process is envisioned in which various spatial and temporal scales of convection operate contemporaneously and hierarchically within other scales. This process of continual change by hierarchical convective cells affects the surface at varying temporal and spatial scales, and its effects are discernable through their relic geological manifestations, the QGM patterns.

Plains tectonism on Venus: Inferences from canali longitudinal profiles

Canali-type channels on Venus show inverted profile segments; that is, large portions of the channels trend uphill. The original gradients for these channels were not horizontal, but must have progressively trended downhill. Therefore, undulation patterns imposed on the profiles have to be the result of tectonism occurring since channel formation. This implies that some of the uppermost geological units of the plains, which are coincident with canali, experienced significant postemplacement tectonic deformation. The pattern of deformation is hierarchical. Within observational limits, at least two scales of deformation are indicated. The longer scale deformation (thousands of kilometers) corresponds to large-scale basins; the shorter scale deformation (hundreds of kilometers) corresponds to ridge belts or to small-scale domes/basins. The latter features, at scales up to a few hundred kilometers, extensively deform some plain areas. Although not appearing in the topographic profiles because of resolution limitations, deformation scales of tens of kilometers or less, which mostly reflect wrinkle ridges, also overlap the longer deformation scales. The channels probably formed relatively quickly in comparison to the time scale of deformation. Canali formation is closely related to the genesis of plains, and canali profile deformation reflects tectonic processes operating at multiple scales. The lower limit rates of large-scale tectonic warping are comparable to epeirogenetic deformation rates for Earth's intraplate continental interiors.

Deflections in Lava Flow Directions Relative to Topography in the Tharsis Region: Indicators of Post-Flow Tectonic Motion

High-resolution topographic data for Mars from the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA), and imagery from the Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) and the Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) allow for the first accurate assessment of lava flow directions relative to topographic slopes in the Tharsis region. Tharisis has long been recognized as the dominant tectonic and volcanic province on the planet, with a complex geologic history. In this study, lava flow directions on Daedalia Planum, Syria Planum, Tempe Terra, and near the Tharsis Montes are compared with MOLA topographic contours to look for deviations of flow directions from the local slope direction. The topographic deviations identified in this study are likely due to Tharsis tectonic deformation that has modified the regional topography subsequent to the emplacement of the flows, and can be used to model the mechanisms and magnitudes of relatively recent tectonism in the region. A similar approach was used to identify possible postflow tectonic subsidence on the Snake River Plain in Idaho.

Identification and interpretation of tectonic features from ERTS-1 imagery

The author has identified the following significant results. An important fault zone, which is strongly suspected of being seismically active, was identified on RBV images, ERTS E-1013-17305 (101, 201, and 301), in northeastern Utah. This fault zone is not shown on the Geological Map of the United States nor on the Tectonic Map of North America. When the epicenters of historic earthquakes and their magnitudes were plotted on an overlay corresponding to the scene, a major earthquake cluster up to magnitude 4.9 was found through which the fault zone passes. This suspected active fault zone runs in a northwest-southwest direction cutting across the Patmos Mountains and the southwestern side of the East Tavaputs Plateau from near the junction of the Colorado River with the Dolores River to and beyond the town of Dragerton, Utah. The fault zone which will subsequently be referred to as the Dragerton fault zone appears to be an element of a major tectonic lineament which includes the Moab fault, Salt Valley, Spanish and Lisbon Valleys. Because of the limited imagery coverage received so far, the extent of this lineament or its tectonic significance cannot be ascertained. It is suspected, however, that it constitutes a major crustal break in the Colorado Plateau.

On the breakup of tectonic plates by polar wandering

The equations for the stresses in a homogeneous shell of uniform thickness caused by a shift of the axis of rotation are derived. The magnitude of these stresses reaches a maximum value of the order of 10 to the 9th power dyn/sq cm, which is sufficient for explaining a tectonic breakup. In order to deduce the fracture pattern according to which the breakup of tectonic plates can be expected the theory of plastic deformation of shells is applied. The analysis of this pattern gives an explanation of the existing boundary systems of the major tectonic plates as described by Morgan (1968), LePichon (1968) and Isacks et al. (1968).

Early impact basins and the onset of plate tectonics

The fundamental crustal dichotomy of the Earth (high and low density crust) was established nearly 4 billion years ago. Therefore, subductable crust was concentrated at the surface of the Earth very early in its history, making possible an early onset for plate tectonics. Simple thermal history calculations spanning 1 billion years show that the basin forming impact thins the lithosphere by at least 25%, and increases the sublithosphere thermal gradients by roughly 20%. The corresponding increase in convective heat transport, combined with the highly fractured nature of the thinned basin lithosphere, suggest that lithospheric breakup or rifting occurred shortly after the formation of the basins. Conditions appropriate for early rifting persisted from some 100,000,000 years following impact. We suggest a very early stage of high temperature, fast spreading "microplate" tectonics, originating before 3.5 billion years ago, and gradually stabilizing over the Archaean into more modern large plate or Wilson Cycle tectonics.

Lunar seismicity and tectonics

Results are presented for an analysis of all moonquake data obtained by the Apollo seismic stations during the period from November 1969 to May 1974 and a preliminary analysis of critical data obtained in the interval from May 1974 to May 1975. More accurate locations are found for previously located moonquakes, and additional sources are located. Consideration is given to the sources of natural seismic signals, lunar seismic activity, moonquake periodicities, tidal periodicities in moonquake activity, hypocentral locations and occurrence characteristics of deep and shallow moonquakes, lunar tidal control over moonquakes, lunar tectonism, the locations of moonquake belts, and the dynamics of the lunar interior. It is concluded that: (1) moonquakes are distributed in several major belts of global extent that coincide with regions of the youngest and most intense volcanic and tectonic activity; (2) lunar tides control both the small quakes occurring at great depth and the larger quakes occurring near the surface; (3) the moon has a much thicker lithosphere than earth; (4) a single tectonic mechanism may account for all lunar seismic activity; and (5) lunar tidal stresses are an efficient triggering mechanism for moonquakes.

Tectonic asymmetry of the earth and other planets

The structures of Earth, Mars, Venus, and the Moon are examined and compared. Global tectonic characteristics are presented for each. A comparison of the tectonics reveals the structural asymetry of these planets and the moon. Tectonic asymmetry information for the group is used to interpret certain aspects of the earth's geological past.

Global tectonics of Mercury and the moon

Lobate scarps on Mercury have been studied to determine the nature of the surface stress history and implications for the planet's early tectonic history. Morphologic and transection relations indicate that most Mercurian scarps are tectonic in nature and are due to compressive stresses in the surface layer. The azimuthal distribution of lobate-scarp trends is compatible with an early predominantly compressive global stress field due to thermal shrinkage of the planet. Superposition relations indicate that the contractive phase was largely a pre-Caloris process. The effects of stresses due to planetary despinning were either negligible, predate the scarps, or were largely obscured by cratering or volcanism. The tectonic history of Mercury as recorded in the lobate scarps is different from that which caused the system of lineaments on the moon.

On volcanism and thermal tectonics on one-plate planets

For planets with a single global lithospheric shell or 'plate', the thermal evolution of the interior affects the surface geologic history through volumetric expansion and the resultant thermal stress. Interior warming of such planets gives rise to extensional tectonics and a lithospheric stress system conductive to widespread volcanism. Interior cooling leads to compressional tectonics and lithospheric stresses that act to shut off surface volcanism. On the basis of observed surface tectonics, it is concluded that the age of peak planetary volume, the degree of early heating, and the age of youngest major volcanism on the one-plate terrestrial planets likely decrease in the order Mercury, Moon, Mars.

Topography of Venus and earth - A test for the presence of plate tectonics

Comparisons of earth and Venus topography by use of Pioneer/Venus radar altimetry are examined. Approximately 93% of the Venus surface has been mapped with a horizontal resolution of 200 km and a vertical resolution of 200 m. Tectonic troughs have been indicated in plains regions which cover 65% of Venus, and hypsometric comparisons between the two planets' elevation distributions revealed that while the earth has a bimodal height distribution, Venus displays a unimodal configuration, with 60% of the planet surface within 500 m of the modal planet radius. The effects of mapping the earth at the same resolution as the Venus observations were explored. Continents and oceans were apparent, and although folded mountains appeared as high spots, no indications of tectonic activity were discernible. A NASA Venus Orbiting Imaging radar is outlined, which is designed to detect volcanoes, folded mountain ranges, craters, and faults, and thereby allow definition of possible plate-tectonic activity on Venus.

Two-dimensional Finite Element Modeling for Modeling Tectonic Stress and Strain

Techniques of finite element analysis in two dimensional plane strain were applied to problems of geophysics and tectonics. More specifically, the flexibility of the finite element method was employed to address problems involving geological complexity and fault interactions. The modeling of effective anisotropy in material elastic properties proved useful in describing the deformation of faulted crustal blocks. The applications of this modeling work to problems of actual tectonics in southern California was explored. Preliminary models show encouraging agreement with measured tectonic strain in this region, and modeling work was done to gain an understanding of the stress state in a locked fault region with future seismic potential.

Grabens, basin tectonics, and the maximum total expansion of the moon

Information from lunar grabens is used to address the question of whether the grabens and wrinkle ridges are tectonic or volcanic in origin. The geometry of simple grabens is discussed, and the kinematics and mechanics are addressed in terms of an elastic response model, a brittle response model, the mechanics of the megaregolith, and total extension for all lunar grabens. Constraints on the thermal evolution of the moon are considered, including thermal history calculations and grabens in space and time. Mare basin tectonics is discussed in terms of two kinematic models/ subsidence by increased radius of curvature and subsidence with no increase in radius of curvature. It is concluded that the observable geological history of the moon is inconsistent with any significant expansion of the moon since about 3.9 billion years ago. Both thermal and tectonic models of lunar evolution are critized.
