Flexibility effects on the control system performance of large scale robotic manipulators

Structural flexibility of robotic manipulators becomes significant and limits the performance of a control system when manipulators are large structures, manipulating on large payloads, and/or operating at high speeds. The question of when a manipulator can be considered rigid or must be considered flexible is studied as a function of manipulator dynamics and task characteristics. Results are interpreted in simple quantitative forms which can be used as design and analysis tools to decide whether or not the manipulator flexibility will be a significant factor for a given task condition. The limitations imposed by the manipulator flexibility on the joint variable feedback control system performance is determined using linear and nonlinear methods. The closed loop eigenstructure behavior of finite dimensional models under joint variable feedback is studied and results are compared with the previously reported results.

Cascade Distiller System Performance Testing Interim Results

The Cascade Distillation System (CDS) is a rotary distillation system with potential for greater reliability and lower energy costs than existing distillation systems. Based upon the results of the 2009 distillation comparison test (DCT) and recommendations of the expert panel, the Advanced Exploration Systems (AES) Water Recovery Project (WRP) project advanced the technology by increasing reliability of the system through redesign of bearing assemblies and improved rotor dynamics. In addition, the project improved the CDS power efficiency by optimizing the thermoelectric heat pump (TeHP) and heat exchanger design. Testing at the NASA-JSC Advanced Exploration System Water Laboratory (AES Water Lab) using a prototype Cascade Distillation Subsystem (CDS) wastewater processor (Honeywell d International, Torrance, Calif.) with test support equipment and control system developed by Johnson Space Center was performed to evaluate performance of the system with the upgrades as compared to previous system performance. The system was challenged with Solution 1 from the NASA Exploration Life Support (ELS) distillation comparison testing performed in 2009. Solution 1 consisted of a mixed stream containing human-generated urine and humidity condensate. A secondary objective of this testing is to evaluate the performance of the CDS as compared to the state of the art Distillation Assembly (DA) used in the ISS Urine Processor Assembly (UPA). This was done by challenging the system with ISS analog waste streams. This paper details the results of the AES WRP CDS performance testing.

Optical communication system performance with tracking error induced signal fading.

System performance is determined for an optical communication system using noncoherent detection in the presence of tracking error induced signal fading assuming (1) binary on-off modulation (OOK) with both fixed and adaptive threshold receivers, and (2) binary polarization modulation (BPM). BPM is shown to maintain its inherent 2- to 3-dB advantage over OOK when adaptive thresholding is used, and to have a substantially greater advantage when the OOK system is restricted to a fixed decision threshold.

The effects of rain on system performance for the NASA 30/20 GHz Experimental Satellite

A 30/20 GHz Experimental Communications Satellite System is presently under study by NASA to evaluate system technology and high data rate multi-beam communications techniques. In this paper the expected system performance for the 30/20 GHz Satellite is presented, for both trunking and customer premise service (CPS) modes, with particular emphasis on the effects of severe rain events on link reliability. A rain attenuation prediction model technique is described and path and two-way link availabilities are developed for the various modes of operation. The results indicate that acceptable link availabilities can be expected on the 30/20 GHz system for both the trunking and CPS modes, and the experimental satellite system can form the basis for verification of system performance for operational 30/20 GHz systems.

Optimization of Mitigating System Performance Index to Improve Nuclear Power Plant Safety and Efficiency

MSPI (Mitigation System Performance Index) is one of the risk-informed, plant-specific performance indicators of NRC’s Reactor Oversight Process. MSPI is used by the regulator and nuclear industry to monitor and assess the performance of plant mitigating systems. In this project, a calculation tool has been developed by incorporating the plant operation data, Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) data, and industry baseline values to automate the calculation process of MSPI and the generation of the report. This is the first stage in an effort to optimize the MSPI through advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques to improve nuclear power plant safety and efficiency.

DSN telemetry system performance using a maximum likelihood convolutional decoder

Results are described of telemetry system performance testing using DSN equipment and a Maximum Likelihood Convolutional Decoder (MCD) for code rates 1/2 and 1/3, constraint length 7 and special test software. The test results confirm the superiority of the rate 1/3 over that of the rate 1/2. The overall system performance losses determined at the output of the Symbol Synchronizer Assembly are less than 0.5 db for both code rates. Comparison of the performance is also made with existing mathematical models. Error statistics of the decoded data are examined. The MCD operational threshold is found to be about 1.96 db.

Spacecraft Multiple Array Communication System Performance Analysis

The Communication Systems Simulation Laboratory (CSSL) at the NASA Johnson Space Center is tasked to perform spacecraft and ground network communication system simulations, design validation, and performance verification. The CSSL has developed simulation tools that model spacecraft communication systems and the space and ground environment in which the tools operate. In this paper, a spacecraft communication system with multiple arrays is simulated. Multiple array combined technique is used to increase the radio frequency coverage and data rate performance. The technique is to achieve phase coherence among the phased arrays to combine the signals at the targeting receiver constructively. There are many technical challenges in spacecraft integration with a high transmit power communication system. The array combining technique can improve the communication system data rate and coverage performances without increasing the system transmit power requirements. Example simulation results indicate significant performance improvement can be achieved with phase coherence implementation.

A Cost and Performance System (CAPS) in a Federal agency

Cost and Performance System (CAPS) is an automated system used from the planning phase through implementation to analysis and documentation. Data is retrievable or available for analysis of cost versus performance anomalies. CAPS provides a uniform system across intra- and international elements. A common system is recommended throughout an entire cost or profit center. Data can be easily accumulated and aggregated into higher levels of tracking and reporting of cost and performance. The level and quality of performance or productivity is indicated in the CAPS model and its process. The CAPS model provides the necessary decision information and insight to the principal investigator/project engineer for a successful project management experience. CAPS provides all levels of management with the appropriate detailed level of data.

A guide for performing system safety analysis

A general guide is presented for performing system safety analyses of hardware, software, operations and human elements of an aerospace program. The guide describes a progression of activities that can be effectively applied to identify hazards to personnel and equipment during all periods of system development. The general process of performing safety analyses is described; setting forth in a logical order the information and data requirements, the analytical steps, and the results. These analyses are the technical basis of a system safety program. Although the guidance established by this document cannot replace human experience and judgement, it does provide a methodical approach to the identification of hazards and evaluation of risks to the system.

Aircraft Analysis Using the Layered and Extensible Aircraft Performance System (LEAPS)

The Layered and Extensible Aircraft Performance System (LEAPS) is a new air- craft analysis tool being developed by members of the Aeronautics Systems Analysis Branch (ASAB) and the Vehicle Analysis Branch (VAB) at NASA Langley Research Center. LEAPS will enable the analysis of advanced aircraft concepts and architec- tures that include electric and hybrid-electric propulsion systems. The development of LEAPS is motivated by the analysis gaps found in traditional aircraft analysis tools such as the Flight Optimization System (FLOPS). FLOPS has been the tool of choice of the ASAB for over 30 years and has proven to be a reliable analysis tool for conventional aircraft. However, FLOPS is not suitable to analyze the cur- rent unconventional vehicles that are of interest to industry, government agencies, and academia. In contrast, LEAPS is being developed with a flexible architecture that leverages new analysis methodologies that will enable the analysis of unconven- tional aircraft. This paper presents the first complete working version of LEAPS by showing the analysi at include fuel-based and hybrid-electric conceptual aircraft.
