The design, implementation, and performance of the LZ calibration systems

LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a tonne-scale experiment searching for direct dark matter interactions and other rare events. It is located at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota, USA. The core of the LZ detector is a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber (TPC), designed with the primary goal of detecting Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) via their induced low energy nuclear recoils. Surrounding the TPC, two veto detectors immersed in an ultra-pure water tank enable reducing background events to enhance the discovery potential. Intricate calibration systems are purposely designed to precisely understand the responses of these three detector volumes to various types of particle interactions and to demonstrate LZ's ability to discriminate between signals and backgrounds. In this paper, we present a comprehensive discussion of the key features, requirements, and performance of the LZ calibration systems, which play a crucial role in enabling LZ's WIMP-search and its broad science program. The thorough description of these calibration systems, with an emphasis on their novel aspects, is valuable for future calibration efforts in direct dark matter and other rare-event search experiments.

Development and Characterization of a Low-Pressure Calibration System for Hypersonic Wind Tunnels

Minimization of uncertainty is essential for accurate ESP measurements at very low free-stream static pressures found in hypersonic wind tunnels. Statistical characterization of environmental error sources requires a well defined and controlled calibration method. A calibration system has been constructed and environmental control software developed to control experimentation to eliminate human induced error sources. The initial stability study of the calibration system shows a high degree of measurement accuracy and precision in temperature and pressure control. Control manometer drift and reference pressure instabilities induce uncertainty into the repeatability of voltage responses measured from the PSI System 8400 between calibrations. Methods of improving repeatability are possible through software programming and further experimentation.

Hadron Monitor Calibration System for NuMI

NuMI (Neutrinos at Main Injector) beamline at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory provides neutrinos to various neutrino experiments. The hadron monitor consisting of a 5 by 5 array of ionization chambers is part of the diagnostics for the beamline. In order to calibrate the hadron monitor, a gamma source is needed. We present the status and progress of the development of the calibration system for the hadron monitor. The system based on Raspberry Pi controlled CNC system, motors, and position sensors would allow us to place the gamma source precisely to calibrate the signal gain of individual pixels. The ultimate outcome of the study is a prototype of the calibration system.

Recent Developments and Status of the Langley Single Vector Balance Calibration System (SVS)

The Langley Research Center (LaRC) Single Vector Balance Calibration System (SVS) was first introduced in 2000 by Peter Parker. The SVS combines the Design of Experiments (DOE) methodology with a novel load application system. Since that time three systems have been designed and developed with different load range capabilities (ranging from 2 pounds to 3,000 pounds). Approximately fifteen balances have been calibrated and their data compared to conventional techniques. This paper will present results of these comparisons, based on the mathematical models and accuracies, and discuss differences that were observed. In addition, changes in the implementation of the initial load schedules developed using DOE will be highlighted. One of the principles behind DOE is randomization. The initial loading schedules used to date have been randomized in the traditional DOE sense but not for repeat calibrations or experiments. Implementation of this randomization within blocks and its impact on data quality will be reviewed. Areas of potential future development will be presented which include changes in the centers to include loads with the force position system in the pure error estimates.

Precision ozone calibration system based on vapor pressures of ozone

A precision ozone calibration system for stratospheric research has been developed and evaluated. Vapor pressures above solid ozone are mixed with a carrier gas (N2) to produce stratospheric ozone mixing ratios at total pressures of 1 to cover 20 torr. The uncertainty in the ozone mixing ratios is approximately + or - 1.5 percent, the stability of ozone is + or - 0.3 percent. Experiments to be calibrated may sample the gas mixture over a wide range of flow rates; the maximum throughput of gas with corrections of less than 1 percent to ozone is about 200 torr 1/min. A mass spectrometer system continuously monitors the purity and stability of the N2-O3 gas mixture.

Improvements to the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) Calibration System

As a continuing effort to increase the calibration accuracy of the AVIRIS data a number of recent improvements have been implemented and are in the process of being tested during the 1994 flight season. These include the following innovations: A direct observation of a laboratory radiance standard is now used to double check the wide field-of-view calibration via an integrating sphere source. Launch site field calibration of the AVIRIS sensor is now being planned to augment the laboratory and inflight calibration. Modification to a dry air conditioning unit has been made to enable ground calibration at flight operating temperatures. One hundred lines of dark imagery has been added to the end of each flight line to assist in the analysis and removal of residual coherent noise. The intensity of the onboard calibration lamp has been modified to improve response in the blue end of the spectrum. Novel spectral filters have been installed in the onboard calibration source.

Automatic force balance calibration system

A system for automatically calibrating force balances is provided. The invention uses a reference balance aligned with the balance being calibrated to provide superior accuracy while minimizing the time required to complete the calibration. The reference balance and the test balance are rigidly attached together with closely aligned moment centers. Loads placed on the system equally effect each balance, and the differences in the readings of the two balances can be used to generate the calibration matrix for the test balance. Since the accuracy of the test calibration is determined by the accuracy of the reference balance and current technology allows for reference balances to be calibrated to within +/-0.05% the entire system has an accuracy of +/-0.2%. The entire apparatus is relatively small and can be mounted on a movable base for easy transport between test locations. The system can also accept a wide variety of reference balances, thus allowing calibration under diverse load and size requirements.

Langley Automated Sensor Inter-calibration System (LASICS): Open Access Tools for Satellite Imager Inter-Calibration

Satellite imager calibration teams are tasked with maintaining stable measurement records to facilitate reliable monitoring of geophysical parameters and ensure dependable input for weather forecast models. Satellite imagers are neither uniformly calibrated nor radiometrically scaled to a common reference. Consistent inter-calibration between various earth-orbiting satellite imager pairs is a critical step in the creation of seamless earth-scene reflectance data records over time for input to higher level algorithms that retrieve earth system climate-sensitive properties. Each imager inherently by virtue of its optics (and associated properties like Spectral Response etc.) will have a unique measurement of the same earth-scene reflected signal. A key part of this is the identification and prediction of events where the imager pairs from their respective earth-orbits view the same stable terrestrial targets with nearly identical viewing and solar geometry. Langley Automated Sensor Inter-calibration System (LASICS) will provide the Earth remote sensing community with a foundation for the harmonization of these remote sensing records by the development of an intuitive, user-friendly, interactive web-based open access service that will leverage, an existing extensive and ever-growing database of earth-imager channel spectral response functions, on-demand capabilities for computation and visualization of spectral band adjustment factors using a variety of external hyper-spectral earth observation sources (e.g. SCIAMACHY, GOME-2 for VIS and IASI, AIRS for IR) and a variety of Solar Irradiance Spectra.

Automatic flowmeter calibration system

A system for automatically calibrating the accuracy of a flowmeter is described. The system includes a calculator capable of performing mathematical functions responsive to receiving data signals and function command signals. A prover cylinder is provided for measuring the temperature, pressure, and time required for accumulating a predetermined volume of fluid. Along with these signals, signals representing the temperature and pressure of the fluid going into the meter are fed to a plurality of data registers. Under control of a progress controller, the data registers are read out and the information is fed through a data select circuit to the calculator. Command signals are also produced by a function select circuit and are fed to the calculator set indicating the desired function to be performed. The reading is then compared with the reading produced by the flowmeter.
