Realizing string-net condensation: Fibonacci anyon braiding for universal gates and sampling chromatic polynomials

Abstract The remarkable complexity of a topologically ordered many-body quantum system is encoded in the characteristics of its anyons. Quintessential predictions emanating from this complexity employ the Fibonacci string net condensate (Fib SNC) and its anyons: sampling Fib-SNC would estimate chromatic polynomials while exchanging its anyons would implement universal quantum computation. However, physical realizations remained elusive. We introduce a scalable dynamical string net preparation (DSNP) that constructs Fib SNC and its anyons on reconfigurable graphs suitable for near-term superconducting processors. Coupling the DSNP approach with composite error-mitigation on deep circuits, we create, measure, and braids Fibonacci anyons; charge measurements show 94% accuracy, and exchanging the anyons yields the expected golden ratioϕwith 98% average accuracy. We then sample the Fib SNC to estimate chromatic polynomial atϕ + 2 for several graphs. Our results establish the proof of principle for using Fib-SNC and its anyons for fault-tolerant universal quantum computation and aim at a classically hard problem.

String-based axial and helicity-flip GPDs: A comparison to lattice QCD

We construct an analytic, string-based representation of the nucleon’s axial and helicity-flip conformal moments of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) that holds for skewness and for both the quark and gluon channels. The starting point is the Mellin-Barnes resummation of the conformal partial-wave expansion, where the moments are parametrized by open- (Reggeon) and closed-string (Pomeron) trajectories with slopes determined by experimental form factors and meson/glueball spectroscopy. The forward limits are fixed by the empirical unpolarized and polarized parton distributions. Polynomiality, crossing symmetry, and support are satisfied by construction. After next-to-leading order Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi/Efremov-Radyushkin-Brodsky-Lepage evolution to μ = 2 GeV our analytic framework (i) reproduces some of the currently available lattice moments of E and H˜ in the nonsinglet sector, (ii) predicts sea-quark and gluon polarized moments that will be testable by forthcoming simulations and experiments at Jefferson Lab and the future Electron-Ion Collider, and (iii) yields axial and helicity-flip GPDs in x-space in reasonable agreement with lattice QCD.

Realtime dynamics of hyperon spin correlations from string fragmentation in a deformed four-flavor Schwinger model

Self-polarizing weak decays of Λ -hyperons provide unique insight into the role of entanglement in the fragmentation of QCD strings through measurements of the spin correlations of Λ Λ ¯ pairs produced in collider experiments. The simplest quantum field theory representing the underlying parton dynamics is the four-flavor massive Schwinger model plus an effective spin-flip term, where the flavors are mapped to light (up or down) and heavy (strange) quarks and their spins. This construction provides a novel way to explore hyperon spin correlations in 1 + 1 dimensions. We investigate the evolution of these correlations for different string configurations that are sensitive to the rich structure of the model Hamiltonian. Supersymmetric Virasoro minimal strings

A random matrix model definition of a family of N = 1 supersymmetric extensions of the Virasoro minimal string of Collier, Eberhardt, Mühlmann, and Rodriguez is presented. An analysis of the defining string equations shows that the models all naturally have unambiguous nonperturbative completions, which are explicitly supplied by the double-scaled orthogonal polynomial techniques employed. Perturbatively, the multiloop correlation functions of the model define a special supersymmetric class of “quantum volumes,” generalizing the prototype case, some of which are computed. Precision string phenomenology

Calabi-Yau compactifications of the E 8 × E 8 heterotic string provide a promising route to recovering the four-dimensional particle physics described by the Standard Model. While the topology of the Calabi-Yau space determines the overall matter content in the low-energy effective field theory, further details of the compactification geometry are needed to calculate the normalized physical couplings and masses of elementary particles. In this work, we present numerical computations of physical Yukawa couplings in a number of heterotic models in the standard embedding and demonstrate the existence of natural hierarchies, a coveted feature in string model building. Emergence of String Monodromy in Effective Field Theory

We demonstrate that when the field theory Kleiss-Kuijf and Bern-Carrasco-Johansson relations are imposed on one color ordering of general local bi-adjoint scalar effective field theories, the string monodromy relations must be obeyed by the other color ordering. This is a surprising example of an open string world-sheet property appearing in a purely field theoretic context. As part of the derivation, we show that nonlinear relations among the four-point Wilson coefficients arise from imposing linear symmetries on the six-point amplitude via factorization. Parametrization of Generalized Parton Distributions from 𝑡-Channel String Exchange in AdS Spaces

We introduce a string-based parametrization for nucleon quark and gluon generalized parton distributions (GPDs) that is valid for all skewness. Our approach leverages conformal moments, representing them as the sum of spin-𝑗 nucleon 𝐴-form factor and skewness-dependent spin-𝑗 nucleon 𝐷-form factor, derived from 𝑡-channel string exchange in AdS spaces consistent with Lorentz invariance and unitarity. This model-independent framework, satisfying the polynomiality condition due to Lorentz invariance, uses Mellin moments from empirical data to estimate these form factors. With just five Regge slope parameters, our method accurately produces various nucleon quark GPD types and symmetric nucleon gluon GPDs through pertinent Mellin-Barnes integrals. Our isovector nucleon quark GPD is in agreement with existing lattice data, promising to improve the empirical extraction and global analysis of nucleon GPDs in exclusive processes, by avoiding the deconvolution problem at any skewness, for the first time.

Engineering and revealing Dirac strings in spinor condensates

Artificial monopoles have been engineered in various systems, yet there has been no systematic study of the singular vector potentials associated with the monopole field. We show that the Dirac string, the line singularity of the vector potential, can be engineered, manipulated, and made manifest in a spinor atomic condensate. We elucidate the connection among spin, orbital degrees of freedom, and the artificial gauge, and show that there exists a mapping between the vortex filament and the Dirac string. We also devise a proposal where preparing initial spin states with relevant symmetries can result in different vortex patterns, revealing an underlying correspondence between the internal spin states and the spherical vortex structures. Such a mapping also leads to a new way of constructing spherical Landau levels, and monopole harmonics. Our observation provides insights into the behavior of quantum matter possessing internal symmetries in curved spaces. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Lorentzian contours for tree-level string amplitudes

We engineer compact contours on the moduli spaces of genus-zero Riemann surfaces that achieve analytic continuation from Euclidean to Lorentzian worldsheets. These generalized Pochhammer contours are based on the combinatorics of associahedra and make the analytic properties of tree-level amplitudes entirely manifest for any number and type of external strings. We use them in practice to perform first numerical computations of open and closed string amplitudes directly in the physical kinematics for n=4,5,6,7,8,9 n = 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 . We provide a code that allows anyone to do such computations.

Vertical 2T-nC FeRAM Demonstration: BEOL Read Transistor for 4F 2 Memory Strings and Two-Terminal Selector Design for Polarization Disturb Mitigation

In this work, we demonstrate a vertical 2T-nC FeRAM with a back-end-of-line (BEOL) read transistor (T R ) for 4F 2 string and propose a selector design to mitigate polarization disturb in passive capacitor crossbar arrays. Key contributions include: 1) successful integration and operation composed of a Si MOSFET write transistor (T W ), 3-layer cylindrical ferroelectric capacitors, and Si-doped In 2 O 3 BEOL T R , demonstrating the feasibility of 4F 2 2T−nC string; 2) introducing nonlinearity into the capacitor stack to suppress ferroelectric voltage drop under inhibition biases while maintaining sufficient write voltage, reducing disturbance; 3)modeling and experimental validation of inserting a metalsemiconductor (a-Si)-metal (MSM) selector into the capacitor in mitigating the disturb, particularly achieving 9x reduction of disturb after 10 6 cycles in the V W /2 scheme.

Loop-string-hadron approach to SU(3) lattice Yang-Mills theory: Hilbert space of a trivalent vertex

The construction of gauge-invariant states of SU(3) lattice gauge theories has garnered new interest in recent years, but implementing them is complicated by the need for SU(3) Clebsch-Gordon coefficients. In the loop-string-hadron (LSH) approach to lattice gauge theories, the elementary excitations are strictly gauge invariant, and constructing the basis requires no knowledge of Clebsch-Gordon coefficients. Originally developed for SU(2), the LSH formulation was recently generalized to SU(3), but limited to one spatial dimension. In this work, we generalize the LSH approach to constructing the basis of SU(3) gauge-invariant states at a trivalent vertex—the essential building block to multidimensional space. A direct generalization from the SU(2) vertex yields a legitimate basis; however, in certain sectors of the Hilbert space, the naive LSH basis vectors so defined suffer from being nonorthogonal. The issues with orthogonality are directly related to the “missing label” or “outer multiplicity” problem associated with SU(3) tensor products and may also be phrased in terms of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients or the need for a “seventh Casimir” operator. The states that are unaffected by the problem are orthonormalized in closed form. For the sectors that are afflicted, we discuss the nonorthogonal bases and their orthogonalization. A few candidates for seventh Casimir operators are readily constructed from the suite of LSH gauge-singlet operators. The diagonalization of a seventh Casimir represents one prescriptive solution toward obtaining a complete orthonormal basis, but a closed-form general solution remains to be found. A T-duality of non-supersymmetric heterotic strings and an implication for Topological Modular Forms

Abstract Motivated by recent developments connecting non-supersymmetric heterotic string theory to the theory of Topological Modular Forms (TMF), we show that the worldsheet theory with central charge (17,$$ \frac{3}{2} $$ 3 2 ) obtained by fibering the (E 8 ) 1 × (E 8 ) 1 current algebra over the two$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (0, 1) sigma model onS 1 with antiperiodic spin structure (such that theE 8 factors are exchanged as we go around the circle), is continuously connected to the (E 8 ) 2 theory in the Gaiotto Johnson-Freyd Witten sense of going “up and down the RG trajectories”. Combined with the work of Tachikawa and Yamashita, this furnishes a physical derivation of the fact that the (E 8 ) 2 theory corresponds to the unique nontrivial torsion element [(E 8 ) 2 ] of TMF 31 with zero mod-2 elliptic genus.

Gauge loop-string-hadron formulation on general graphs and applications to fully gauge fixed Hamiltonian lattice gauge theory

We develop a gauge invariant, Loop-String-Hadron (LSH) based representation of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory defined on a general graph consisting of vertices and half-links. Inspired by weak coupling studies, we apply this technique to maximal tree gauge fixing. This allows us to develop a fully gauge-fixed representation of the theory in terms of LSH quantum numbers. We explicitly show how the quantum numbers in this formulation directly relate to the variables in the magnetic description. In doing so, we will also explain in detail how the Kogut-Susskind formulation, prepotentials, and point splitting work for general graphs. In the appendix of this work, we provide a self-contained exposition of the mathematical details of Hamiltonian pure gauge theories defined on general graphs.

Spatial String Tension and Its Effects on Screening Correlators in a Thermal QCD Plasma

We calculate the spatial Wilson line correlator for 2 +1 flavor QCD using highly improved staggered quark discretization for fermions and in quenched QCD for a wide range of temperatures, from the chiral crossover temperature 𝑇 pc ≃ 156 MeV or the deconfinement temperature ≃300 MeV, respectively, up to 2 GeV. Extracting the spatial string tension for different lattice cutoffs and by performing a continuum extrapolation of this observable, we show that the soft (magnetic) gluons interact nonperturbatively even at temperatures ≳1 GeV. We provide incriminating evidences to demonstrate that dimensionally reduced effective theories can describe these soft quark and gluon quasi-particles for both quenched and 2 +1 flavor QCD, at temperatures 𝑇 ≳ 5⁢𝑇 pc . We also show for the first time the imprints of the nonperturbative pseudopotential in the properties of mesonic screening masses for temperatures ranging from 0.8 to 164 GeV in the quark-gluon plasma.

On a class of selection rules without group actions in field theory and string theory

We discuss a class of selection rules which i) do not come from group actions on fields, ii) are exact at tree level in perturbation theory, iii) are increasingly violated as the loop order is raised, and iv) eventually reduce to selection rules associated with an ordinary group symmetry. We start from basic field-theoretical examples in which fields are labeled by conjugacy classes rather than representations of a group, and discuss generalizations using fusion algebras or hypergroups. We also discuss how such selection rules arise naturally in string theory, such as for non-Abelian orbifolds or other cases with non-invertible worldsheet symmetries.

Post-hoc reweighting of hadron production in the Lund string model

We present a method for reweighting flavor selection in the Lund string fragmentation model. This is the process of calculating and applying event weights enabling fast and exact variation of hadronization parameters on pre-generated event samples. The procedure is post hoc, requiring only a small amount of additional information stored per event, and allowing for efficient estimation of hadronization uncertainties without repeated simulation. Weight expressions are derived from the hadronization algorithm itself, and validated against direct simulation for a wide range of observables and parameter shifts. The hadronization algorithm can be viewed as a hierarchical Markov process with stochastic rejections, a structure common to many complex simulations outside of high-energy physics. This perspective makes the method modular, extensible, and potentially transferable to other domains. We demonstrate the approach in Pythia, including both coverage considerations and timing benefits. For the purpose of this paper, our goal is to develop and demonstrate the the formalism, and we therefore exclude several model variations for baryon production (popcorn model, junction production) needed for proton collisions. These will be the topic of a future paper.

Towards Field Emission Free Cavity Processing and String Assembly at Fermilab

Cavities and cryomodules assembled at Fermilab have demonstrated unprecedented field emission (FE) free gradients. However, consistent FE-free performance is not guaranteed. Many lessons were learned, and continued vigilance is a must. In addition, several improvements have been identified to further push the state-of-the-art low particulate cavity processing and assembly at Fermilab. Those included the optimization of nitrogen flow, robotic-assisted assembly, and low-particulate fasteners. We share our latest results and vision for the future clean assemblies of cavities and cryomodule strings.
