Label-free quantum super-resolution imaging using entangled multi-mode squeezed light

Abstract In this study, we explore the theoretical application of entangled multi-mode squeezed light for label-free optical super-resolution imaging. By generating massively entangled multi-mode squeezed light through an array of balanced beam splitters, using a single-mode squeezed light input, we create a multi-mode quantum light state with exceptional entanglement and noise suppression below the shot noise level. This significantly reduces imaging measurement errors compared to classical coherent state light imaging when the same number of photons are used on the imaging sample. We demonstrate how to optimize the imaging system’s parameters to achieve the Heisenberg imaging error limit, taking into account the number of entangled modes and photons used. We also examine the effects of optical losses in the imaging system, necessitating adjustments to the optimized parameters based on the degree of optical loss. In practical applications, this new quantum imaging approach reduces the number of photons needed to achieve the same image quality by two orders of magnitude compared to classical imaging methods that use non-entangled, non-squeezed coherent state light.

Proposed framework for applying squeezed light to multi-photon absorption plasma diagnostics

We propose a quantum-enhanced plasma diagnostic based on squeezed states of light. Squeezed light can exhibit super-Poissonian photon statistics, leading to enhanced multiphoton absorption cross-sections compared to classical light. This effect enables improved sensitivity for two-photon excitation of high-energy atomic transitions such as ground-state excitation, and results in increased absorbed power and fluorescence in a plasma. We consider two methods of generating squeezed states and evaluate their advantages and limitations in the context of plasma absorption diagnostics. By comparing with and extending previous theoretical work, we predict an enhancement of the absorption signal by up to seven orders of magnitude at low intensities (10 1 W/m 2 ), with diminishing enhancement persisting up to high intensities (10 10 W/m 2 ). These results suggest that squeezed-light sources offer a viable pathway toward quantum-enhanced plasma diagnostics.

Spin Squeezing by Rydberg Dressing in an Array of Atomic Ensembles

Here, we report on the creation of an array of spin-squeezed ensembles of cesium atoms via Rydberg dressing, a technique that offers optical control over local interactions between neutral atoms. We optimize the coherence of the interactions by a stroboscopic dressing sequence that suppresses super-Poissonian loss. We thereby prepare squeezed states of N = 200 atoms with a metrological squeezing parameter ξ 2 = 0.77⁢(9) quantifying the reduction in phase variance below the standard quantum limit. We realize metrological gain across three spatially separated ensembles in parallel, with the strength of squeezing controlled by the local intensity of the dressing light. Our method can be applied to enhance the precision of tests of fundamental physics based on arrays of atomic clocks and to enable quantum-enhanced imaging of electromagnetic fields.

Single-mode squeezed-light generation and tomography with an integrated optical parametric oscillator

Quantum optical technologies promise advances in sensing, computing, and communication. A key resource is squeezed light, where quantum noise is redistributed between optical quadratures. We introduce a monolithic, chip-scale platform that exploits the χ (2) nonlinearity of a thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) resonator device to efficiently generate squeezed states of light. Our system integrates all essential components—except for the laser and two detectors—on a single chip with an area of one square centimeter, reducing the size, operational complexity, and power consumption associated with conventional setups. Using the balanced homodyne measurement subsystem that we implemented on the same chip, we measure a squeezing of 0.55 decibels and an anti-squeezing of 1.55 decibels. We use 20 milliwatts of input power to generate the parametric oscillator pump field by using second harmonic generation on the same chip. Our work represents a step toward compact and efficient quantum optical systems posed to leverage the rapid advances in integrated nonlinear and quantum photonics.

Long-term stabilization of intensity-difference squeezing from four-wave mixing in rubidium vapor

Generation of quantum states of light through off-resonance four-wave mixing in rubidium vapor is a straightforward and well-established technique. However, achieving a sufficiently high and consistent level of intensity difference squeezing (IDS) and intrinsic quantum correlations between photon pairs over an extended timescale, necessary for quantum-light-based nonlinear optical spectroscopy and microscopy, remains challenging and largely unexplored. Here, we report a simple stabilization method combining an active periodic laser frequency retuning with an automatic control algorithm based on quantitatively assessing the factors affecting the IDS level and squeezed light intensity. Validation of our method was performed by acquiring data over a 5-hour period, and the results demonstrate a remarkably stable squeezing level of -7.8 dB in combination with a > 4× reduction of the standard deviation of IDS level from 0.46 dB to 0.10 dB. The achieved stabilization further enables us to quantitatively assess the IDS reduction due to the scattering in a polystyrene bead suspension as a function of sample transmission. Our approach should enable a variety of applications requiring an extended squeezing stability over multiple hours, especially for those following biological processes and chemical reactions in real time.

Compact fiber-coupled narrowband two-mode squeezed light source

Quantum correlated states of light, such as squeezed states, are a fundamental resource for the development of quantum technologies, as they are needed for applications in quantum metrology, quantum computation, and quantum communications. It is thus critical to develop compact, efficient, and robust sources to generate such states. Here, we report on a compact, narrowband, fiber-coupled source of two-mode squeezed states of light at 795 nm based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in an 85 Rb atomic vapor. The source is designed in a small modular form factor, with two input fiber-coupled beams, the seed and pump beams required for the FWM, and two output fibers, one for each of the modes of the squeezed state. The system is optimized for low pump power (135 mW) to achieve a maximum intensity-difference squeezing of 4.4 dB after the output of fibers at an analysis frequency of 1 MHz. Furthermore, the narrowband nature of the source makes it ideal for atomic-based quantum sensing and quantum networking configurations that rely on atomic quantum memories. Such a source paves the way for a versatile and portable platform for applications in quantum information science.

Characterizing non-polarization-maintaining highly nonlinear fiber toward squeezed-light generation

Squeezed light, which is easily degraded by loss, could benefit from generation directly in optical fiber. Furthermore, highly nonlinear fiber could offer more efficient generation with lower pump power and shorter fiber lengths than standard single-mode fiber. We investigate non-polarization-maintaining highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) for squeezed-light generation by characterizing possible sources of excess noise, including its zero-dispersion wavelength (ZDW) variation and polarization noise. We find significant ZDW variation and excess polarization noise. We believe the polarization noise is from non-linear polarization-mode dispersion. We model this polarization noise and find that it is likely to degrade Kerr squeezing but not squeezing from four-wave mixing.

The dynamic liquid squeeze film.

Experiments were conducted during which plane circular surfaces bounding a liquid squeeze film were subjected to impulsive loads. Pressure measurements within the liquid film and the boundary motion were recorded. These experimental results were compared with theoretical analyses which predict the bonding strength of dynamic squeeze films. The data show that the fluid inertia contributes significantly to the value of the bonding strength. It was also found that, for high loading rates, the liquid squeeze film can resist tensile loads. When in tension, liquid cavitation was observed. A photographic study was conducted which indicated that the inception of cavitation is directly related to the squeeze film liquid viscosity and inversely related to the film thickness.

Numerical determination of the transmissibility characteristics of a squeeze film damped forced vibration system

Numerical solutions of the governing equations of motion of a liquid squeeze film damped forced vibration system were carried out to examine the feasibility of using a liquid squeeze film to cushion and protect large structures, such as buildings, located in areas of high seismic activity. The mathematical model used was that for a single degree of freedom squeeze film damped spring mass system. The input disturbance was simulated by curve fitting actual seismic data with an eleventh order Lagranging polynomial technique. Only the normal component of the seismic input was considered. The nonlinear, nonhomogeneous governing differential equation of motion was solved numerically to determine the transmissibility over a wide range of physical parameters using a fourth-order Runge-Kutta technique. It is determined that a liquid squeeze film used as a damping agent in a spring-mass system can significantly reduce the response amplitude for a seismic input disturbance.

Squeeze flow and compaction behavior of toughened polyimide matrix composites

The main emphasis was placed upon the squeeze flow and compaction behavior of the Lewis Research Center (LaRC) research project series polyimide matrix composites. The measurement of squeeze film flow behavior was performed by a plastometer which monitors the change of thickness of a prepreg specimen laid between two parallel plates under the specified temperature and pressure history. A critical evaluation of the plastometer data was attempted by examining the morphology of the specimen at various points during the squeeze flow. The effects of crosslinks (Mc) of resin, imidization (B-ataging) condition, and pressure on the squeeze flow behavior were examined. Results are given.

Quadratic squeezing: An overview

The amplitude of the electric field of a mode of the electromagnetic field is not a fixed quantity: there are always quantum mechanical fluctuations. The amplitude, having both a magnitude and a phase, is a complex number and is described by the mode annihilation operator a. It is also possible to characterize the amplitude by its real and imaginary parts which correspond to the Hermitian and anti-Hermitian parts of a, X sub 1 = 1/2(a(sup +) + a) and X sub 2 = i/2(a(sup +) - a), respectively. These operators do not commute and, as a result, obey the uncertainty relation (h = 1) delta X sub 1(delta X sub 2) greater than or = 1/4. From this relation we see that the amplitude fluctuates within an 'error box' in the complex plane whose area is at least 1/4. Coherent states, among them the vacuum state, are minimum uncertainty states with delta X sub 1 = delta X sub 2 = 1/2. A squeezed state, squeezed in the X sub 1 direction, has the property that delta X sub 1 is less than 1/2. A squeezed state need not be a minimum uncertainty state, but those that are can be obtained by applying the squeeze operator.

Short-cavity squeezing in barium

Broadband phase sensitive noise and squeezing were experimentally observed in a system of barium atoms interacting with a single mode of a short optical cavity. Squeezing of 13 +/- 3 percent was observed. A maximum possible squeezing of 45 +/- 8 percent could be inferred for out experimental conditions, after correction for measured loss factors. Noise reductions below the quantum limit were found over a range of detection frequencies 60-170 MHz and were best for high cavity transmission and large optical depths. The amount of squeezing observed is consistent with theoretical predictions from a full quantum statistical model of the system.

Squeezed states in the theory of primordial gravitational waves

It is shown that squeezed states of primordial gravitational waves are inevitably produced in the course of cosmological evolution. The theory of squeezed gravitons is very similar to the theory of squeezed light. Squeezed parameters and statistical properties of the expected relic gravity-wave radiation are described.

An investigation of squeeze-cast alloy 718

Alloy 718 billets produced by the squeeze-cast process have been evaluated for use as potential replacements for propulsion engine components which are normally produced from forgings. Alloy 718 billets were produced using various processing conditions. Structural characterizations were performed on 'as-cast' billets. As-cast billets were then homogenized and solution treated and aged according to conventional heat-treatment practices for this alloy. Mechanical property evaluations were performed on heat-treated billets. As-cast macrostructures and microstructures varied with squeeze-cast processing parameters. Mechanical properties varied with squeeze-cast processing parameters and heat treatments. One billet exhibited a defect free, refined microstructure, with mechanical properties approaching those of wrought alloy 718 bar, confirming the feasibility of squeeze-casting alloy 718. However, further process optimization is required, and further structural and mechanical property improvements are expected with process optimization.

Production of squeezed states for macroscopic mechanical oscillator

The possibility of squeezed states generation for macroscopic mechanical oscillator is discussed. It is shown that one can obtain mechanical oscillator in squeezed state via coupling it to electromagnetic oscillator (Fabry-Perot resonator) and pumping this Fabry-Perot resonator with a field in squeezed state. The degradation of squeezing due to mechanical and optical losses is also analyzed.

Squeezed States and Particle Production in High Energy Collisions

Using the 'quantum optical approach' we propose a model of multiplicity distributions in high energy collisions based on squeezed coherent states. We show that the k-mode squeezed coherent state is the most general one in describing hadronic multiplicity distributions in particle collision processes, describing not only p(bar-p) collisions but e(+)e(-), vp and diffractive collisions as well. The reason for this phenomenological fit has been gained by working out a microscopic theory in which the squeezed coherent sources arise naturally if one considers the Lorentz squeezing of hadrons and works in the covariant phase space formalism.

Generation of High-Order Squeezing in Multiphoton Micromaser

The generation of steady state higher-order squeezing in the sense of Hong and Mandel and also of Hillery in a multiphoton micromaser is studied. The results show that the cotangent state which is generated by the coherent trapping scheme in a multiphoton micromaser can exhibit not only second-order squeezing but also fourth-order and squared field amplitude squeezings. The influence of the cavity loss on the squeezings is investigated.

The Quantum Phase-Dynamical Properties of the Squeezed Vacuum State Intensity-Couple Interacting with the Atom

The Phase-dynamical properties of the squeezed vacuum state intensity-couple interacting with the two-level atom in an ideal cavity are studied using the Hermitian phase operator formalism. Exact general expressions for the phase distribution and the associated expectation value and variance of the phase operator have been derived. we have also obtained the analytic results of the phase variance for two special cases-weakly and strongly squeezed vacuum. The results calculated numerically show that squeezing has a significant effect on the phase properties of squeezed vacuum.
