Dipolar spin wave packet transport in a van der Waals antiferromagnet

Antiferromagnets are promising platforms for transduction and transmission of quantum information via magnons—the quanta of spin waves—and they offer advantages over ferromagnets in regard to dissipation, speed of response and robustness to external fields. Recently, transduction was shown in a van der Waals antiferromagnet, where strong spin-exciton coupling enables readout of the amplitude and phase of coherent magnons by photons of visible light. This discovery shifts the focus of research to transmission, specifically to exploring the non-local interactions that enable magnon wave packets to propagate. Here we demonstrate that magnon propagation is mediated by long-range dipole–dipole interaction. This coupling is an inevitable consequence of fundamental electrodynamics and, as such, will likely mediate the propagation of spin at long wavelengths in the entire class of van der Waals magnets currently under investigation. In conclusion, successfully identifying the mechanism of spin propagation provides a set of optimization rules, as well as caveats, that are essential for any future applications of these promising systems.

Nonreciprocal spin-wave propagation in YIG/GGG: a limit on the DMI parameter

Materials with low damping, such as Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG), are of interest in connection with spintronic devices. A promising structure for information storage is the Skyrmion, a domain wall quasi-particle. It has been shown that the stabilization of a Skyrmion can be energetically favorable with the addition of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) through the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya Interaction (DMI). This interaction should be largest in metals, but still present in insulators. In order to produce spintronic devices using YIG, we must evaluate the DMI interaction inherent in the substrate used to grow the YIG, which is generally Gadolinium Gallium Garnet (GGG). In this study, we measure nonreciprocal spin wave propagation in a thick YIG film in order to place a limit on the DMI parameter in a YIG/GGG bilayer.

Spin wave theory for the triaxial magnetic anisotropy 2D van der Waals antiferromagnet CrSBr

The magnetic properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials have been attracting increasing attention in recent years due to their unique behavior and possible applications in new devices. One material of great interest is the 2D van der Waals (vdW) crystal CrSBr, which exhibits antiferromagnetic (AF) order at low temperatures due to an interlayer AF exchange interaction. Here, we present a full quantum spin-wave theory for vdW crystals considering one interlayer and three intralayer exchange interactions, and triaxial magnetic anisotropy. The fits of the theoretical results to antiferromagnetic resonance measurements and inelastic neutron scattering data in CrSBr yield reliable values for the seven interaction parameters that can be used to calculate other properties of this interesting material.

Hybrid Magnonics for Short-Wavelength Spin Waves Facilitated by a Magnetic Heterostructure

Recent research on hybrid magnonics has been restricted by the long magnon wavelengths of the ferromagnetic resonance modes. Here, we present an experiment on the hybridization of 250-nm-wavelength magnons with microwave photons in a multimode magnonic system consisting of a planar cavity and a magnetic bilayer. The coupling between magnon modes in the two magnetic layers, i.e., the uniform mode in Permalloy and the perpendicular standing spin waves (PSSWs) in yttrium iron garnet, serves as an effective means for exciting short-wavelength PSSWs, which is further hybridized with the photon mode of the microwave resonator. The demonstrated magnon-photon coupling approaches the superstrong coupling regime, and can even be achieved near zero bias field.

Emergence of low-energy spin waves in superconducting electron-doped cuprates

In order to fully utilize the technological potential of unconventional superconductors, an enhanced understanding of the superconducting mechanism is necessary. In the best performing superconductors, the cuprates, superconductivity is intimately linked with magnetism, although the details of this coupling remain elusive. Here, we address this gap by studying the electron-doped cuprate Nd 1.85 Ce 0.15 CuO 4−δ that has an antiferromagnetic ground state when synthesized and only becomes superconducting after a reductive annealing process. Using neutron spectroscopy, we show that the as-grown crystal exhibits a large spin pseudogap in the magnetic fluctuation spectrum. Annealing removes defects introduced by the commonly employed synthesis method and significantly reduces the spin pseudogap. While the spin pseudogap in the annealed sample likely arises from superconductivity, in the as-grown sample it results from the absence of long-wavelength spin waves. These results reveal a direct connection between defects, magnetism, and superconductivity, offering new insight into the mechanisms underlying high-temperature superconductivity and guiding the design of improved superconducting materials.

Superconducting and spin-wave orders in Ba 0.6 ⁢K 0.4⁢ Fe 2⁢ As 2 probed by point contact spectroscopy

The doping dependent phase diagram of the iron pnictide systems displays diverse electronic ground states including unconventional superconductivity and magnetic ordering. From previous bulk measurements, it was argued that the superconducting phase of Ba 1-x K x Fe 2 As 2 might be described within a two band formalism where superconductivity emerges with significantly different magnitudes of the pairing amplitude in the different bands. Here, we have performed point contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy on the optimally doped system (x = 0.4) where we found features that misleadingly mimic the signature of multiple gap amplitudes with large energy difference, when the point contacts are away from the ballistic regime. Closer to the ballistic regime, we found two types of spectra. In one type, a single superconducting gap with unusual broadening was found. The broadening might be due to the presence of multiple gap amplitudes with small energy spacing. The other kind of spectra displayed spectral features at ~ 30 meV in the normal state that gradually diminished with increasing temperature and eventually disappeared at 140 K, the spin density wave transition temperature of parent BaFe 2 As 2 . We attribute the 30 meV spectral feature to a characteristic electron-magnon interaction energy scale in the system.

Refined spin-wave model and multimagnon bound states in Li 2 CuO 2

Here we report a study of the spin dynamics in the ferromagnetic chain compound Li 2 CuO 2 . Inelastic neutron scattering measurements allow for the spin Hamiltonian to be determined using a J 1 –J 2 XXZ-Heisenberg spin chain model with weak interchain interactions. The primary exchange parameters determined from our data are qualitatively consistent with those of Lorenz et al. [Europhys. Lett. 88, 37002 (2009)], and our data allow for the resolution of additional interchain exchange interactions. We also observe the formation of two- and, potentially, three-magnon bound states. The two-magnon bound state exists only in the magnetically ordered phase of this material, consistent with stabilization by the weak, Ising-like exchange anisotropy of the nearest-neighbor intrachain interaction. In contrast, the potential three-magnon state persists in a finite temperature regime above T N , indicating an unconventional character. Finally, our results establish Li 2 CuO 2 as an experimental platform for the study of exchange anisotropy-stabilized bound states in a ferromagnetic chain.

Chiral microwave nonreciprocity demonstrated via Rayleigh and Sezawa modes supported in an Al 0.58 ⁢Sc 0.42 ⁢N/4⁢H–Si⁢C platform

Chirality plays a crucial role in the helicity mismatch between surface acoustic waves and magnetic spin waves, leading to nonreciprocal transmission of acoustic power for coupled magnetoacoustic modes. Acoustic modes with both longitudinal and shear strain exhibit elliptical particle displacements, making them chiral, and different acoustic modes can exhibit different helicities of this elliptical particle displacement. Here, we study chiral acoustic modes with different helicities supported on the same piezoelectric platform and their interaction with magnetic spin waves. Our study demonstrates that the nonreciprocal transmission of acoustic power is driven by the helicity mismatch effect and, specifically, that the handedness of the nonreciprocity is based on whether the surface acoustic wave has retrograde (Rayleigh mode) or prograde (Sezawa mode) elliptical particle displacement with respect to the propagation direction. We found the transmission nonreciprocity to be significant, with 7.3 dB/mm for the retrograde particle displacement (Rayleigh mode at 2.358 GHz) and 3.3 dB/mm for prograde particle displacement (Sezawa mode at 3.112 GHz). Furthermore, this work highlights that piezoelectric platforms can be engineered to support acoustic modes with opposite helicities to enable frequency-selective nonreciprocal radiofrequency and microwave components, such as isolators and circulators, through coupled acoustic spin wave interactions.

Observation of Switchable Chiral Magnons in an Altermagnet

Chiral magnons, the quanta of handed spin waves, transport spin angular momentum without energy loss due to Joule heating. Here, the recently discovered altermagnets were proposed to host chiral magnons arising from a nonrelativistic exchange mechanism, similar to that in ferromagnets but without net magnetization, offering a stray-field-free platform for efficient magnon spin-current manipulation. In this Letter, we directly observed chiral magnons in the altermagnetic prototype MnTe using polarized inelastic neutron scattering. Furthermore, the magnon chirality was found to be reversibly switched by magnetic-field control, establishing a robust foundation for functional altermagnetic magnonics.

Spin dynamics of the spin-chain antiferromagnet RbFeS 2

In this work, we report transport and inelastic neutron scattering studies on electronic properties and spin dynamics of the quasi-one-dimensional spin-chain antiferromagnet RbFeS 2 . An antiferromagnetic phase transition at TN≈195 K and dispersive spin waves with a spin gap of 5 meV are observed. By modeling the spin excitation spectra using linear spin wave theory, intra and interchain exchange interactions are found to be SJ 1 =100(5) meV and SJ 3 =0.9(3) meV, respectively, together with a small single-ion anisotropy of SD zz =0.04(1) meV. Comparison with previous results for other materials in the same class of Fe 3+ spin-chain systems reveals that although the magnetic order sizes show significant variation from 1.8 to 3.0μ B within the family of materials, the exchange interactions SJ are nevertheless quite similar, analogous to the iron pnictide superconductors where both localized and delocalized electrons contribute to the spin dynamics.
