Generalized scaling of spin qubit coherence in over 12,000 host materials

Significance Atomic defects in solid-state materials are promising candidates as quantum bits, or qubits. New materials are actively being investigated as hosts for new defect qubits; however, there are no unifying guidelines that can quantitatively predict qubit performance in a new material. One of the most critical property of qubits is their quantum coherence. While cluster correlation expansion (CCE) techniques are useful to simulate the coherence of electron spins in defects, they are computationally expensive to investigate broad classes of stable materials. Using CCE simulations, we reveal a general scaling relation between the electron spin coherence time and the properties of qubit host materials that enables rapid and quantitative exploration of new materials hosting spin defects.

An NV − center in magnesium oxide as a spin qubit for hybrid quantum technologies

Recent predictions suggest that oxides, such as MgO and CaO, could serve as hosts of spin defects with long coherence times and thus be promising materials for quantum applications. However, in most cases, specific defects have not yet been identified. Here, by using a high-throughput first-principles framework and advanced electronic structure methods, we identify a negatively charged complex between a nitrogen interstitial and a magnesium vacancy in MgO with favorable electronic and optical properties for hybrid quantum technologies. We show that this NV − center has stable triplet ground and excited states, with singlet shelving states enabling optical initialization and spin-dependent readout. We predict several properties, including absorption, emission, and zero-phonon line energies, as well as zero-field splitting tensor, and hyperfine interaction parameters, which can aid in the experimental identification of this defect. Our calculations show that due to a strong pseudo-Jahn Teller effect and low-frequency phonon modes, the NV − center in MgO is subject to a substantial vibronic coupling. We discuss design strategies to reduce such coupling and increase the Debye-Waller factor, including the effect of strain and the localization of the defect states. We propose that the favorable properties of the NV − defect, along with the technological maturity of MgO, could enable hybrid classical-quantum applications, such as spintronic quantum sensors and single qubit gates.

Three individually addressable spin qubits in a single molecule

Here, an asymmetric bis-phenol-β-diketone (H 4 L) has been designed as a ligand programmed to promote the assembly of a molecular arrangement composed of three magnetically exchanged [NiCu] pairs, each exhibiting an S = 1/2 spin. The latter are shown by EPR and magnetometry to be good qubit realizations and non-equivalent within the molecule in the solid state, as required for conditional quantum gates.

Optical Generation and Manipulation of Spin Qubits for Molecular Quantum Information Science (DE-SC0020199 Final Report)

Final Report containing published results and major accomplishments. Major accomplishments during this grant include elucidating the complex mechanisms of photoinduced ground-state electron spin polarization (PIESP) for these complexes. Several detailed studies relating molecular structure and PIESP are detailed. In addition, we have demonstrated polarization of two coupled ground-state spins with a single photon.

Molecular Diradical Spin Qubits in a Crystalline Host as a Platform for Quantum Sensing

Doping a luminescent tris(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl diradical m (TTM) 2 into a host crystal of its diamagnetic precursor m (HTTM) 2 creates a molecular color center with enhanced optical-spin interface properties important for quantum sensing. Optical polarization of the |T 0 ⟩ sublevel of the diradical triplet ground state is achieved by spin-selective intersystem crossing from the |T + ⟩ and |T – ⟩ sublevels of the triplet excited state at ambient and cryogenic temperatures. Coherent spin control of m (TTM) 2 doped into m (HTTM) 2 using pulsed optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) spectroscopy results in a 10-fold improvement in ODMR contrast over that observed for randomly oriented m (TTM)2 using continuous-wave ODMR. The diradical doped crystal powders achieve spin coherence times of 2.8, 3.4, and 7.4 μs at 294, 85, and 5 K, respectively. The diradical photoluminescence is sensitive to weak applied magnetic fields independent of temperature, excitation wavelength, and dopant concentration, providing a promising pathway toward robust quantum sensing of anisotropic magnetic fields under ambient conditions.

Optical Spin Polarization of a Narrow‐Linewidth Electron‐Spin Qubit in a Chromophore/Stable‐Radical System

Abstract Photoexcited organic chromophores appended to stable radicals can serve as qubit and/or qudit candidates for quantum information applications. 1,6,7,12‐Tetra‐(4‐ tert ‐butylphenoxy)‐perylene‐3,4 : 9,10‐bis(dicarboximide) (tpPDI) linked to a partially deuterated α,γ‐bisdiphenylene‐β‐phenylallyl radical (BDPA‐ d 16 ) was synthesized and characterized by time‐resolved optical and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. Photoexcitation of tpPDI‐BDPA‐ d 16 results in ultrafast radical‐enhanced intersystem crossing to produce a quartet state ( Q ) followed by formation of a spin‐polarized doublet ground state ( D 0 ). Pulse‐EPR experiments confirmed the spin multiplicity of Q and yielded coherence times of T m =2.1±0.1 μs and 2.8±0.2 μs for Q and D 0 , respectively. BDPA‐ d 16 eliminates the dominant 1 H hyperfine couplings, resulting in a single narrow line for both the Q and D 0 states, which enhances the spectral resolution needed for good qubit addressability.
