Tuning magnetic antiskyrmion stability in tetragonal inverse Heusler alloys

The identification of materials supporting complex, tunable magnetic order at ambient temperatures is foundational to the development of new magnetic device architectures. In this work, we report the design of Mn 2 XY tetragonal inverse Heusler alloys that are capable of hosting magnetic antiskyrmions whose stability is sensitive to elastic strain. Here We first construct a universal magnetic Hamiltonian capturing the short- and long-range magnetic order which can be expected in these materials. This model reveals critical combinations of magnetic interactions that are necessary to approach a magnetic phase boundary, where the magnetic structure is highly susceptible to small perturbations such as elastic strain. We then computationally search for quaternary Mn 2 (X 1 , X 2 ) Y alloys where these critical interactions may be realized and which are likely to be synthesizable in the inverse Heusler structure. We identify the Mn 2 Pt 1–z X z Ga family of materials with X = Au, Ir, Ni as an ideal system for accessing all possible magnetic phases, with several critical compositions where magnetic phase transitions may be actuated mechanically.

Lieb-Robinson Bounds with Exponential-in-Volume Tails

Lieb-Robinson bounds demonstrate the emergence of locality in many-body quantum systems. Intuitively, Lieb-Robinson bounds state that, with local or exponentially decaying interactions, the correlation that can be built up between two sites separated by distance 𝑟 after a time 𝑡 decays as exp (𝑣⁢𝑡 −𝑟), where 𝑣 is the emergent Lieb-Robinson velocity. In many problems, it is important to also capture how much of an operator grows to act on 𝑟 𝑑 sites in 𝑑 spatial dimensions. Perturbation theory and cluster expansion methods suggest that, at short times, these volume-filling operators are suppressed as exp (−𝑟 𝑑 ). We confirm this intuition, showing that, for 𝑟 >𝑣⁢𝑡, the volume-filling operator is suppressed by exp (−(𝑟−𝑣⁢𝑡) 𝑑 /(𝑣⁢𝑡) 𝑑−1 ). This closes a conceptual and practical gap between the cluster expansion and the Lieb-Robinson bound. We then present two very different applications of this new bound. Firstly, we obtain improved bounds on the classical computational resources necessary to simulate many-body dynamics with error tolerance 𝜀 for any finite time 𝑡: as 𝜀 becomes sufficiently small, only 𝜀 −O⁡(𝑡 𝑑−1 ) resources are needed. A protocol that likely saturates this bound is given. Secondly, we prove that disorder operators have volume-law suppression near the “solvable (Ising) point” in quantum phases with spontaneous symmetry breaking, which implies a new diagnostic for distinguishing many-body phases of quantum matter.

K 2 CoS 2 : A two-dimensional in-plane antiferromagnetic insulator

Recent discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials has brought magnetism to the flatland and opened up exciting opportunities for the exploration of fundamental physics as well as novel device applications. Here, we predict a thermodynamically stable 2D magnetic material, ${\mathrm{K}}_{2}{\mathrm{CoS}}_{2}$, which retains its in-plane bulk antiferromagnetic (AFM) order down to the monolayer and bilayer limits. Magnetic moments $(2.5{{\mu}}_{B}/\mathrm{Co})$ are found to form a quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetically ordered chain of Co atoms. The nonmagnetic electronic spectrum of the monolayer film is found to host flatbands and van Hove singularities, which play a key role in stabilizing the magnetic ground state. Based on classical Monte Carlo simulations, we estimate the Neel temperature for the AFM monolayer to be ${\approx}15\mathrm{K}$. Our study demonstrates that ${\mathrm{K}}_{2}{\mathrm{CoS}}_{2}$ hosts a robust AFM state which persists from the monolayer limit to the bulk material.

Plaquette valence bond state in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ J 1 –J 2 XY model on the square lattice

Here, we studied the ground-state phase diagram of spin-1/2 J 1 –J 2 XY model on the square lattice with first-neighbor J 1 and second-neighbor J 2 antiferromagnetic interactions using both infinite density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) and DMRG approaches. We show that a plaquette valence bond phase is realized in an intermediate region 0.50 ≤ J 2 /J 1 < 0.54 between a Néel magnetic ordered phase at J 2 /J 1 < 0.50 and a stripy magnetic ordered phase at J 2 /J 1 ≥ 0.54 . The plaquette valence bond phase is characterized by finite dimer orders in both the horizontal and vertical directions. Contrary to the spin-1/2 J 1 –J 2 Heisenberg model, we do not find numerical evidence for a quantum spin liquid phase in the J 1 –J 2 XY model.

Majorana chain and Ising model - (non-invertible) translations, anomalies, and emanant symmetries

We study the symmetries of closed Majorana chains in 1+1d, including the translation, fermion parity, spatial parity, and time-reversal symmetries. The algebra of the symmetry operators is realized projectively on the Hilbert space, signaling anomalies on the lattice, and constraining the long-distance behavior. In the special case of the free Hamiltonian (and small deformations thereof), the continuum limit is the 1+1d free Majorana CFT. Its continuum chiral fermion parity (-1)^{F_L} ( − 1 ) F L emanates from the lattice translation symmetry. We find a lattice precursor of its mod 8 ’t Hooft anomaly. Using a Jordan-Wigner transformation, we sum over the spin structures of the lattice model (a procedure known as the GSO projection), while carefully tracking the global symmetries. In the resulting bosonic model of Ising spins, the Majorana translation operator leads to a non-invertible lattice translation symmetry at the critical point. The non-invertible Kramers-Wannier duality operator of the continuum Ising CFT emanates from this non-invertible lattice translation of the transverse-field Ising model.

Fractionalized excitations probed by ultrasound

In this work, we study magnetoelastic interactions by means of ultrasound experiments in 𝛼−RuCl 3 —a prototypical material for the Kitaev spin model on the honeycomb lattice, with a possible spin-liquid state featuring Majorana fermions and ℤ 2 -flux excitations. We present results of the temperature and in-plane magnetic-field dependence of the sound velocity and sound attenuation for several longitudinal and transverse phonon modes propagating along high-symmetry crystallographic directions. A comprehensive data analysis above the magnetically ordered state provides strong evidence of phonon scattering by Majorana fermions. This scattering depends sensitively on the value of the phonon velocities relative to the characteristic velocity of the low-energy fermionic excitations describing the spin dynamics of the underlying Kitaev magnet. Moreover, our data displays a distinct reduction of anisotropy of the sound attenuation, consistent with the presence of thermally excited ℤ 2 visons. Here, we demonstrate the potential of phonon dynamics as a promising probe for uncovering fractionalized excitations in 𝛼−RuCl 3 and provide new insights into the 𝐻−𝑇 phase diagram of this material.

Laser pulse driven control of charge and spin order in the two-dimensional Kondo lattice

Fast and dynamical control of quantum phases is highly desired in the application of quantum phenomena in devices. On the experimental side, ultrafast laser pulses provide an ideal platform to induce femtosecond dynamics in a variety of materials. Here we show that a laser pulse driven heavy fermion system can be tuned to dynamically evolve into a phase, which is not present in equilibrium. Using the state-of-the-art time-dependent variational Monte Carlo method, we perform numerical simulations of realistic laser pulses applied to the Kondo lattice model. By tracking spin and charge degrees of freedom we identify a dynamical phase transition, within the partially Kondo screened phase, from a charge ordered into a metallic state, while preserving the spin order of the system. Furthermore, we propose using high-harmonic generation and nonequilibrium optical conductivity to identify the dynamical phase transition in an ultrafast experiment.

Spin-strain interactions under hydrostatic pressure in α-RuCl 3

We investigate the effects of hydrostatic pressure on 𝛼−RuCl 3 , a prototypical material for the Kitaev spin model on a honeycomb lattice with a possible spin-liquid ground state. Using ultrasound measurements at pressures up to 1.16 GPa, we reveal significant modifications of the acoustic properties and the 𝐻−𝑇 phase diagram of this material. Hydrostatic pressure suppresses the three-dimensional magnetic order and induces a dimerization transition at higher pressures. At low pressures, the sound attenuation exhibits a linear temperature dependence, while above 0.28 GPa, it becomes nearly temperature independent, suggesting a shift in the phonon scattering regime dominated by Majorana fermions. These findings provide new insights into spin-strain interactions in Kitaev magnets and deliver a detailed characterization of the 𝐻−𝑇 phase diagram of 𝛼−RuCl 3 under hydrostatic pressure.

SU(4) Chiral Spin Liquid, Exciton Supersolid, and Electric Detection in Moiré Bilayers

We propose a moiré bilayer as a platform where exotic quantum phases can be stabilized and electrically detected. Moiré bilayers consist of two separate moiré superlattice layers coupled through the interlayer Coulomb repulsion. In the small distance limit, an SU(4) spin can be formed by combining layer pseudospin and the real spin. As a concrete example, we study an SU(4) spin model on triangular lattice in the fundamental representation. By tuning a three-site ring exchange term K ~ ( t 3 /U 2 ), we find the SU(4) symmetric crystallized phase and an SU (4) 1 chiral spin liquid at the balanced filling. We also predict two different exciton supersolid phases with interlayer coherence at imbalanced filling under displacement field. Especially, the system can simulate an SU(2) Bose-Einstein condensation by injecting interlayer excitons into the magnetically ordered Mott insulator at the layer polarized limit. Smoking gun evidences of these phases can be obtained by measuring the pseudospin transport in the counterflow channel.

Solvable 3D Kondo Lattice Exhibiting Pair Density Wave, Odd-Frequency Pairing, and Order Fractionalization

The Kondo lattice model plays a key role in our understanding of quantum materials, but a lack of small parameters has posed a long-standing problem. We present a 3 dimensional S= 1 2 Kondo lattice model describing a spin liquid within an electron sea. Strong correlations in the spin liquid are treated exactly, enabling a controlled analytical approach. Like a Peierls or BCS phase, a logarithmically divergent susceptibility leads to an instability into a new phase at arbitrarily small Kondo coupling. Our solution captures a plethora of emergent phenomena, including odd-frequency pairing, pair density wave formation and order fractionalization. The ground-state state is a pair density wave with a fractionalized charge e, S = 1/2 order parameter, formed between electrons and Majorana fermions.

Field-tuned quantum renormalization of spin dynamics in the honeycomb lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet YbCl 3

The basis for our understanding of quantum magnetism has been the study of elegantly simple model systems. However, even for the antiferromagnetic honeycomb lattice with isotropic spin interactions–one of the simplest model systems–a detailed understanding of quantum effects is still lacking. Here, using inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the honeycomb lattice material YbCl 3 , we elucidate how quantum effects renormalize the single-magnon and multimagnon excitations and how this renormalization can be tuned and ultimately driven to the classical limit by applying a magnetic field. Additionally, our work reveals that the quantum effects tuned by the magnetic field not only renormalize the magnetic excitations but also induce a distinctive sharp feature inside the multimagnon continuum. From a more general perspective, this result demonstrates that structures within magnetic continua can occur over a wide experimental parameter space and can be used as a reliable means of identifying quantum phenomena.

Precursor of pair-density wave in doping Kitaev spin liquid on the honeycomb lattice

Abstract We study the effects of doping the Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice where the spins interact via the bond-directional interaction J K , which is known to have a quantum spin liquid as its exact ground state. The effect of hole doping is studied within the t - J K model on a three-leg cylinder using density-matrix renormalization group. Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system has a dominant quasi-long-range charge-density-wave correlations but short-range single-particle correlations. In the pairing channel, the even-parity superconducting correlation is dominant with d -wave-like symmetry, which oscillates in sign as a function of separation with a period equal to that of the spin-density wave and two times the charge-density wave. Although these correlations fall rapidly (possibly exponentially) at long distances, this is never-the-less the example where a pair-density wave is the leading instability in the pairing channel on the honeycomb lattice.

Machine learning assisted derivation of minimal low-energy models for metallic magnets

Abstract We consider the problem of extracting a low-energy spin Hamiltonian from a triangular Kondo Lattice Model (KLM). The non-analytic dependence of the effective spin-spin interactions on the Kondo exchange excludes the use of perturbation theory beyond the second order. We then introduce a Machine Learning (ML) assisted protocol to extract effective two- and four-spin interactions. The resulting spin model reproduces the phase diagram of the original KLM as a function of magnetic field and single-ion anisotropy and reveals the effective four-spin interactions that stabilize the field-induced skyrmion crystal phase. Moreover, this model enables the computation of static and dynamical properties with a much lower numerical cost relative to the original KLM. A comparison of the dynamical spin structure factor in the fully polarized phase computed with both models reveals a good agreement for the magnon dispersion even though this information was not included in the training data set.

Breakdown of order fractionalization in the CPT model

Here, we present an analysis of the half-filled CPT model, an analytically tractable Kondo lattice model with Yao-Lee spin-spin interactions on a 3D hyperoctagon lattice, proposed by Coleman, Panigrahi, and Tsvelik. Previous studies have established that the CPT model exhibits odd-frequency triplet superconductivity and order fractionalization. Through asymptotic analyses in the small- and large- Kondo coupling limits, we identify a quantum critical point at , marking a transition from a superconductor to a Kondo insulator. By estimating the vison gap energy to account for thermal gauge fluctuations, we determine the energy scales governing the thermal breakdown of order fractionalization. Moreover, at large the Kondo insulator undergoes orbital decoupling, leading to the formation of a decoupled Kitaev orbital liquid. These findings and analogies with the -gauged model lead us to propose a tentative phase diagram for the CPT model at half-filling.

Quantum states of a skyrmion in a two-dimensional antiferromagnet

Quantum states of a skyrmion in a two-dimensional antiferromagnetic lattice are obtained by quantizing the scaling parameter of Belavin-Polyakov model. Skyrmion classical collapse due to violation of the translational invariance of the continuous spin-field model by the lattice is replaced in quantum mechanics by transitions between discrete energy levels of the skyrmion. Here, the rates of transitions due to emission of magnons are computed. Ways of detecting quantization of skyrmion states are discussed.
