Hydrostatic pressure effect on the Co-based honeycomb magnet BaCo 2 (AsO 4 ) 2

Here the honeycomb antiferromagnet BaCo 2 (AsO 4 ) 2 , in which small in-plane magnetic fields (H1 ≈ 0.26T and H2 ≈ 0.52T at T = 1.8 K < T N ≈ 5.4K) induce two magnetic phase transitions, has attracted attention as a possible candidate material for the realization of Kitaev physics based on the 3d element Co 2+ . Here, we report on the change in the transition temperature T N and the critical fields H1 and H2 of BaCo 2 (AsO 4 ) 2 with hydrostatic pressure up to ~20 kbar, as determined from magnetization and specific heat measurements. Within this pressure range, a marginal increase in the magnetic ordering temperature is observed. At the same time, the critical fields are changed significantly (up to ~25 –35%). Specifically, we find that H1 is increased with hydrostatic pressure, i.e., the antiferromagnetic state is stabilized, whereas H2, which was previously associated with a transition into a proposed Kitaev spin-liquid state, decreases with increasing pressure. We discuss to what extent these results are compatible with suggested models with sizable third-nearest-neighbor exchange. Overall, the results put constraints on the magnetic models that are used to describe the low-temperature magnetic properties of BaCo 2 (AsO 4 ) 2 .

Unconventional magnetotransport and antiferromagnetic order in Eu 2 ⁢InTe 5

Here, we report on the structural characterization and physical properties of Eu 2 ⁢InTe 5 , a distorted square-net motif antiferromagnetic semiconductor. Single crystal x-ray diffraction measurements reveal a distortion of the Te square-net layers such that an orthorhombic supercell is necessary to accurately describe the structure. Magnetization, resistivity, and specific heat measurements confirm antiferromagnetic ordering at 𝑇 𝑁 = 7.3K. Anisotropy in magnetization data suggests the magnetic moments are oriented parallel to the 𝑐 axis. We observe an unconventional transverse magnetoresistance and Hall resistivity in the paramagnetic state (𝑇 ≤ 80K), indicating strong coupling between localized Eu 2+ magnetic moments and conduction electrons. Resistivity and Hall measurements indicate the material is a heavily doped semiconductor, with impurity states related to disorder. Our findings highlight a relatively unexplored Eu-based antiferromagnetic semiconductor with unconventional magnetotransport behavior.

A density-wave-like transition in the polycrystalline V 3 Sb 2 sample with bilayer kagome lattice

Recently, transition-metal-based kagome metals have aroused much research interest as a novel platform to explore exotic topological quantum phenomena. Here we report on the synthesis, structure, and physical properties of a bilayer kagome lattice compound V 3 Sb 2 . The polycrystalline V 3 Sb 2 samples were synthesized by conventional solid-state-reaction method in a sealed quartz tube at temperatures below 850 °C. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility and resistivity revealed consistently a density-wave-like transition at T dw ≈ 160 K with a large thermal hysteresis, even though some sample-dependent behaviors were observed presumably due to the different preparation conditions. Upon cooling through T dw , no strong anomaly in lattice parameters and no indication of symmetry lowering were detected in powder x-ray diffraction measurements. This transition can be suppressed completely by applying hydrostatic pressures of about 1.8 GPa, around which no sign of superconductivity was observed down to 1.5 K. Specific-heat measurements revealed a relatively large Sommerfeld coefficient γ = 18.5 mJ∙mol –1 ∙K –2 , confirming the metallic ground state with moderate electronic correlations. Density functional theory calculations indicate that V 3 Sb 2 shows a non-trivial topological crystalline property. Furthermore, our study makes V 3 Sb 2 a new candidate of metallic kagome compound to study the interplay between density-wave-order, nontrivial band topology, and possible superconductivity.

Single Crystal Synthesis and STM Studies of High Temperature Superconductors

This is a final report for the work initiated in September of 1994 under the grant NAG8-1085 - NASA/OMU, on the fabrication of bulk and single crystal synthesis, specific heat measuring and STM studies of high temperature superconductors. Efforts were made to fabricate bulk and single crystals of mercury based superconducting material. A systematic thermal analysis on the precursors for the corresponding oxides and carbonates were carried out to synthesized bulk samples. Bulk material was used as seed in an attempt to grow single crystals by a two-step self flux process. On the other hand bulk samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility, We studied the specific heat behavior in the range from 80 to 300 K. Some preliminary attempts were made to study the atomic morphology of our samples. As part of our efforts we built an ac susceptibility apparatus for measuring the transition temperature of our sintered samples.

A Noncentrosymmetric Polymorph of LuRuGe

In this work, we report a new polymorph of LuRuGe, obtained in indium flux. This phase exhibits the noncentrosymmetric ZrNiAl-type structure with the space group $Ρ\bar 62m$ as determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. This polymorph can convert into another centrosymmetric polymorph (TiNiSi-type structure, space group Pnma ) at high temperatures. In this work, we performed electrical transport, magnetization, and specific heat measurements on this new phase. It shows metallic behavior with a Hall sign change from negative at 2 K to positive at 125 K. LuRuGe exhibits Pauli paramagnetism as the ground state with no local magnetic moments from either the Ru or Lu site. The Debye temperature Θ = 348 K and electronic coefficient γ e = 3.6 mJ K –2 mol –1 are extracted from the low-temperature specific heat data in LuRuGe. We also carried out first-principles density functional theory calculations to map out the electronic band structure and density of states. There are several electronic bands crossing the Fermi level, supporting a multiband scenario consistent with the Hall sign change. The density of states around the Fermi level is mainly from Ru 4d and Ge 4p electrons, indicating a strong hybridization between those atomic orbitals.

Evidence of Dirac Quantum Spin Liquid in YbZn 2⁢ GaO 5

The emergence of a quantum spin liquid (QSL), a state of matter that can result when electron spins are highly correlated but do not become ordered, has been the subject of a considerable body of research in condensed matter physics [1,2]. Spin liquid states have been proposed as hosts for high-temperature superconductivity [3] and can host topological properties with potential applications in quantum information science [4]. The excitations of most quantum spin liquids are not conventional spin waves but rather quasiparticles known as spinons, whose existence is well established experimentally only in one-dimensional systems; the unambiguous experimental realization of QSL behavior in higher dimensions remains challenging. Here, in this work, we investigate the novel compound $YbZn_{2}GaO_{5}$, which hosts an ideal triangular lattice of effective spin-1/2 moments with no detectable inherent chemical disorder. Thermodynamic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements performed on high-quality single crystal samples of $YbZn_{2}GaO_{5}$ exclude the possibility of long-range magnetic ordering down to 0.06 K, demonstrate a quadratic power law for the specific heat and reveal a continuum of magnetic excitations in parts of the Brillouin zone. Both low-temperature thermodynamics and inelastic neutron scattering spectra suggest that $YbZn_{2}GaO_{5}$ is a U(1) Dirac QSL with spinon excitations concentrated at certain points in the Brillouin zone. We advanced these results by performing additional specific heat measurements under finite fields, further confirming the theoretical expectations for a Dirac QSL on the triangular lattice of $YbZn_{2}GaO_{5}$.

Numerical Studies of Properties of Confined Helium

We carry out state of the art simulations of properties of confined liquid helium near the superfluid transition to a degree of accuracy which allows to make predictions for the outcome of fundamental physics experiments in microgravity. First we report our results for the finite-size scaling behavior of heat capacity of superfluids for cubic and parallel-plate geometry. This allows us to study the crossover from zero and two dimensions to three dimensions. Our calculated scaling functions are in good agreement with recently measured specific heat scaling functions for the above mentioned geometries. We also present our results of a quantum simulation of submonolayer of molecular hydrogen deposited on an ideal graphite substrate using path-integral quantum Monte Carlo simulation. We find that the monolayer phase diagram is rich and very similar to that of helium monolayer. We are able to uncover the main features of the complex monolayer phase diagram, such as the commensurate solid phases and the commensurate to incommensurate transition, in agreement with the experiments and to find some features which are missing from the experimental analysis.

Charactarization of Thermal Protection Systems

In 2012, NASA's mission of landing the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) on Mars was successful. MSL was protected by an ablative heatshield of tiled low density material known as PICA (phenolic impregnated carbon ablator). The heatshield was instrumented with MEDLI (MSL Entry Descent Landing Instrument) a suite of sensors & thermocouples at discrete locations in order to monitor the in-depth ablator temperature response and surface pressure. MEDLI was designed and developed by NASA Langley, in partnership with NASA Ames Research Center for the purposes of probing Mars and evaluating the performance of the spacecraft upon entry into the Martian atmosphere. The flight data reduces the uncertainty in engineer models for predicting the response of a spacecraft towards the extreme heating environment of an entry into the Martian atmosphere. MEDLI2 is a part of the Mars 2020 mission and is the next-generation sensor suite for entry, descent, and landing. This data will again help engineers validate their flight models. Additionally, the atmospheric data, can help us understand atmospheric density and winds. This is a critical study for reducing risks to both robotic and future human missions to Mars. Engineered models for Mars 2020 are dependent upon parameters related to the materials response to heating and radiation. In this work, the thermal properties and other measurements of various ablative materials are analyzed to achieve greater utility of the 2012 MEDLI flight data and more accurately determine the parameters being used in Mars 2020. The purpose of this study was to measure specific heat, thermal conductivity, char yield, reflectance as a function of wavelength, and other thermal parameters and optical properties of various ablative materials. CO2(g) at extreme temperatures emits radiation impacting MEDLI2 flight predictions. Emissivity & absorptivity as a function of temperature were calculated from FTIR and UV-Vis data as a means of investigating whether these materials might absorb CO2 radiation upon entry into the Mars atmosphere.

Resilience of the Aurivillius structure upon La and Cr doping in a Bi 5 Ti 3 FeO 15 multiferroic

Here, combining the experimental techniques of high-resolution X-ray diffraction, magnetometry, specific heat measurement, and X-ray photoelectron, Raman and dielectric spectroscopy techniques, we have studied the influence of La and Cr doping on the crystal structure and magnetism of the room temperature Aurivillius multiferroic Bi 5 Ti 3 FeO 15 by investigating the physical properties of (Bi 4 La)Ti 3 FeO 15 and Bi 5 Ti 3 (Fe 0.5 Cr 0.5 )O 15 . The parent (Bi 5 Ti 3 FeO 15 ) and the doped ((Bi 4 La)Ti 3 FeO 15 and Bi 5 Ti 3 (Fe 0.5 Cr 0.5 )O 15 ) compounds crystallize in the A2 1 am space group, which is confirmed through our analysis of high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction data obtained on phase-pure polycrystalline powders. We determined the oxidation states of the metal atoms in the studied compounds as Fe 3+ , Ti 4+ , Cr 3+ , and La 3+ through the analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data. The magnetic susceptibilities of the three compounds are marked by the absence of a long-range ordered ground state, but dominated by superparamagnetic clusters with dominant antiferromagnetic interactions. This signature of short-range magnetism is also seen in specific heat as a low temperature enhancement which is suppressed upon the application of external magnetic fields up to 8 T. Our dielectric spectroscopy experiments showed that the three studied compounds display similar features in the dielectric constant measured as a function of frequency. However, upon doping La at the Bi site, the width of the ferroelectric hysteresis loop increases for (Bi 4 La)Ti 3 FeO 15 compared to that of the parent compound Bi 5 Ti 3 FeO 15 , and with Cr doping, Bi 5 Ti 3 (Fe 0.5 Cr 0.5 )O 15 becomes a leaky dielectric. The resilience of the Aurivillius crystal structure towards doping of La at the Bi site and Cr at the Fe site is clearly seen in the bulk properties of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and the average crystal structure. The relevance of changes in the local structure is evident from our Raman spectroscopy and X-ray pair distribution function studies.

Anisotropic magnetism and Kondo-lattice behavior in the frustrated antiferromagnet Ce 3 ⁢MgBi 5

Here, we report the synthesis and physical characterization of single-crystalline Ce 3 ⁢MgBi 5 , a previously unexplored member of the Ce 3 ⁢𝑀⁢𝑃⁢𝑛 5 family. This compound crystallizes in the hexagonal 𝑃⁢6 3 /𝑚⁢𝑐⁢𝑚 structure, featuring an anisotropic Ce sublattice composed of zigzag chains along the 𝑐 axis and a distorted kagome-like network in the basal plane. Magnetization measurements reveal antiferromagnetic order below 𝑇 𝑁 ≈ 4.2K with strong magnetic anisotropy and multiple field-induced metamagnetic transitions for fields applied perpendicular to [001], leading to a dome-shaped 𝐻–𝑇 phase diagram. Electrical transport exhibits characteristic signatures of a Ce-based Kondo lattice, including broad resistivity maxima and pronounced field-dependent anomalies in the magnetoresistance and Hall response that track the magnetic phase boundaries. Specific-heat measurements confirm the magnetic transition and show that the full R ⁢ln⁡ 2 entropy expected for a Ce 3+ Kramers doublet is recovered by 20 K, indicating an extended temperature range of magnetic fluctuations consistent with Kondo correlations. Our results establish Ce 3 ⁢MgBi 5 as a platform within the Ce 3 ⁢𝑀⁢𝑃⁢𝑛 5 family for exploring the interplay of geometric frustration, magnetic anisotropy, and Kondo-lattice physics under applied magnetic fields.

d -Electron Heavy Fermion Behavior in a Near-Room-Temperature Polar Metallic Ferrimagnet: A Case of Mn 5 SiC

Polycrystalline Mn 5 SiC was synthesized by using a high-temperature solid-state method. Mn 5 SiC adopts a polar space group (Cmc2 1 ) with six crystallographic Mn sites confirmed by X-ray and neutron diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and second harmonic generation experiments. The complex crystal structure features edge-sharing trigonal prisms and icosahedra, as well as face/edge-sharing pentagonal prisms. Magnetic measurements indicate ferrimagnetic ordering with a transition temperature of 284 K. The ferrimagnetic structure (magnetic space group Cm’c’2 1 ) was further identified by powder neutron diffraction, where collinear Mn spins align along the crystallographic c-axis. The refined magnetic moment for each crystallographic Mn site at 4 K is 1.8(2), −2.42(9), −1.72(8), 0.51(6), 0.50(4), and 1.7(2) μ B . Density functional theory calculations confirm both the metallic behavior and the ferrimagnetic structure observed experimentally and further provide insight into the observed Mn moment dependence across crystallographic sites. The resistivity and specific heat measurements and density functional theory calculations reveal a substantially large Kadowaki–Woods ratio of 5 × 10 –5 μΩ·cm/(mJ/mol) 2 and a many-body renormalization factor of 5.5, indicating the unusual heavy Fermion behavior in such an itinerant magnetic metal.

Magnetic properties of the Shastry-Sutherland lattice material BaNd 2 ZnO 5

We investigate the physical properties of the Shastry-Sutherland lattice material BaNd 2 ZnO 5 . Neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements reveal antiferromagnetic order below 1.65 K. The magnetic order is found to be a 2–Q magnetic structure with the magnetic moments lying in the Shastry-Sutherland lattice planes comprising the tetragonal crystal structure of BaNd 2 ZnO 5 . The ordered moment for this structure is 1.9(1) μB per Nd ion. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal that the crystal field ground state doublet is well separated from the first excited state at 8 meV. The crystal field Hamiltonian is determined through simultaneous refinement of models with both the LS coupling and intermediate coupling approximations to the inelastic neutron scattering and magnetic susceptibility data. The ground state doublet indicates that the magnetic moments lie primarily in the basal plane with magnitude consistent with the size of the determined ordered moment.

Intermediate Yb valence in the Zintl phases Yb 14 MSb 11 (M=Zn,Mn,Mg): XANES, magnetism, and heat capacity

Yb 14 Mn Sb 11 is a magnetic Zintl compound as well as being one of the best high temperature p -type thermoelectric materials. According to the Zintl formalism, which defines intermetallic phases where cations and anions are valence satisfied, this structure type is nominally made up of 14 Yb 2 + , 1 MnSb 4 9 - , 1 Sb 3 7 - , and 4 Sb 3 - atoms. When Mn is replaced by Mg or Zn, the Zintl defined motifs become 13 Yb 2 + , 1 Yb 3 + , 1 (Mg, Zn) Sb 4 10 - , 1 Sb 3 7 - , and 4 Sb 3 - . The predicted existence of Yb 3 + based on simple electron counting rules of the Zintl formalism calls the Yb valence of these compounds into question. X-ray absorption near-edge structure, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements on single crystals of the three analogs show signatures of intermediate valence Yb behavior and in particular, reveal the heavy fermion nature of Yb 14 MgSb 11 . In these isostructural compounds, Yb can exhibit a variety of electronic configurations from intermediate ( M = Zn ), mostly 2+ ( M = Mn ), to 3+ ( M = Mg ). In all cases, there is a small amount of intermediate valency at the lowest temperatures. The amount of intermediate valency is constant for M = Mn , Mg and temperature dependent for M = Zn . The evolution of the Yb valence correlated to the transport properties of these phases is highlighted. The presence of Yb in this structure type allows for fine tuning of the carrier concentration and thereby the possibility of optimized thermoelectric properties along with unique magnetic phenomena.

Disorder recovers the Wiedemann-Franz law in the metallic phase of VO 2

At temperatures higher than 341 K, vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ) is a strongly correlated metal with resistivity exceeding the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit. Its electronic thermal conductivity is lower than that predicted by the Wiedemann-Franz (WF) law, and can be explained by nonquasiparticle transport where heat and charge currents follow separate diffusive modes. In contradiction, the Wiedemann-Franz law is a direct consequence of quasiparticle transport where charge carriers are elastically scattered. In this work, we enhance elastic electron scattering in VO 2 by introducing atomic disorder with ion irradiation. Furthermore, a gradual and eventually full recovery of the WF law is observed at high defect densities. This observation provides an example that connects hydrodynamic quasiparticle transport to nonquasiparticle transport in metallic systems.

MgPd 2 Sb : A Mg-based Heusler-type superconductor

Here, we report the synthesis and physical properties of a full Heusler compound, MgPd 2 Sb, which we found to show superconductivity below T c = 2.2 K . MgPd 2 Sb was obtained by a two-step solid-state reaction method and its purity and cubic crystal structure [Fm-3m, a = 6.4523(1) Å ] were confirmed by powder x-ray diffraction. Normal and superconducting states were studied by electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. The results show that MgPd 2 Sb is a type-II, weak coupling superconductor ( λ e-p = 0.53 ). The observed pressure dependence of T c (ΔT c /p ≈ -0.23 K / GPa ) is one of the strongest reported for a superconducting Heusler compound. The electronic structure, phonons, and electron-phonon coupling in MgPd 2 Sb were theoretically investigated. The obtained results are in agreement with the experiment, confirming the electron-phonon coupling mechanism of superconductivity. We compare the superconducting parameters to those of all reported Heusler-type superconductors.

Thermodynamic and electrical transport properties of UTe 2 under uniaxial stress

Despite intense experimental efforts, the nature of the unconventional superconducting order parameter of UTe 2 remains elusive. This puzzle stems from reports of either a single or a double superconducting transition at ambient pressure as well as a complex pressure-temperature phase diagram. To address this issue, we measured the heat capacity and electrical resistivity of UTe 2 under compressive uniaxial stress σ applied along different crystallographic directions. We find that the critical temperature T c of the single observed bulk superconducting transition decreases with σ along [100] and [110] but increases with σ along [001]. Aside from its effect on T c , c-axis stress leads to a significant piezoresistivity. Importantly, an in-plane shear stress σ xy does not induce any observable splitting of the superconducting transition over a stress range of σ xy ≈ 0.17GPa. Furthermore, this result suggests that the superconducting order parameter of UTe 2 may be single component at ambient pressure.
