Conformal wave expansions for flat space amplitudes

The extended BMS algebra contains a conformal subgroup that acts on the celestial sphere as SO(1, 3). It is of interest to perform mode expansions of free fields in Minkowski spacetime that realize this symmetry in a simple way. In the present work we perform such a mode expansion for massive scalar fields using the unitary principal series representations of SO(1, 3) with a view to developing a holographic approach to gravity in asymptotically flat spacetime. These mode expansions are also of use in studying holography in three-dimensional de Sitter spacetime.

Generalized Ginsparg-Wilson relations

We give a general derivation of Ginsparg-Wilson relations for both Dirac and Majorana fermions in any dimension. These relations encode continuous and discrete chiral, parity and time-reversal anomalies and will apply to the various classes of free-fermion topological insulators and superconductors (in the framework of a relativistic quantum field theory in Euclidean spacetime). We show how to formulate the exact symmetries of the lattice action and the relevant index theorems for the anomalies. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Traversable wormhole solution with a background Kalb–Ramond field

Highlights: • Wormhole solutions of gravity in a Lorentz breaking symmetry scenario are found. • Light deflection by the wormhole in a Lorentz breaking symmetry scenario is calculated. • It is shown the influence of the vacuum expectation value of a Kalb–Ramond field in deflection of light. We obtain a static spherically symmetric wormhole solution due to the vacuum expectation value (vev) of a Kalb–Ramond field. The Kalb–Ramond (vev) is a background tensor field which produces a local Lorentz symmetry breaking (LSB) of spacetime. Considering a non-minimal coupling between the Kalb–Ramond (vev) and the Ricci tensor, we found an exact traversable wormhole solution sustained by matter sources with a negative isotropic pressure. The matter source satisfies the energy conditions at the throat for particular choices of the LSB parameter. Moreover, we employ the Gauss–Bonnet method to analyze the deflection angle of light in the weak limit approximation.

Analyticity and the Unruh effect: a study of local modular flow

The Unruh effect can be formulated as the statement that the Minkowski vacuum in a Rindler wedge has a boost as its modular flow. In recent years, other examples of states with geometrically local modular flow have played important roles in understanding energy and entropy in quantum field theory and quantum gravity. Here I initiate a general study of the settings in which geometric modular flow can arise, showing (i) that any geometric modular flow must be a conformal symmetry of the background spacetime, and (ii) that in a well behaved class of “weakly analytic” states, geometric modular flow must be future-directed. I further argue that if a geometric transformation is conformal but not isometric, then it can only be realized as modular flow in a conformal field theory. Finally, I discuss a few settings in which converse results can be shown — i.e., settings in which a state can be constructed whose modular flow reproduces a given vector field.

Brown-York charges at null boundaries

The Brown-York stress tensor provides a means for defining quasilocal gravitational charges in subregions bounded by a timelike hypersurface. We consider the generalization of this stress tensor to null hypersurfaces. Such a stress tensor can be derived from the on-shell subregion action of general relativity associated with a Dirichlet variational principle, which fixes an induced Carroll structure on the null boundary. The formula for the mixed-index tensor T i j takes a remarkably simple form that is manifestly independent of the choice of auxiliary null vector at the null surface, and we compare this expression to previous proposals for null Brown-York stress tensors. The stress tensor we obtain satisfies a covariant conservation equation with respect to any connection induced from a rigging vector at the hypersurface, as a result of the null constraint equations. For transformations that act covariantly on the boundary structures, the Brown-York charges coincide with canonical charges constructed from a version of the Wald-Zoupas procedure. For anomalous transformations, the charges differ by an intrinsic functional of the boundary geometry, which we explicity verify for a set of symmetries associated with finite null hyper-surfaces. Applications of the null Brown-York stress tensor to symmetries of asymptotically flat spacetimes and celestial holography are discussed.

The cosmological bootstrap: inflationary correlators from symmetries and singularities

Scattering amplitudes at weak coupling are highly constrained by Lorentz invariance, locality and unitarity, and depend on model details only through coupling constants and the particle content of the theory. For example, four-particle amplitudes are analytic for contact interactions and have simple poles with appropriately positive residues for tree-level exchange. In this paper, we develop an understanding of inflationary correlators which parallels that of flat-space scattering amplitudes. Specifically, we study slow-roll inflation with weak couplings to extra massive particles, for which all correlation functions are controlled by an approximate conformal symmetry on the boundary of the spacetime. After systematically classifying all possible contact terms in de Sitter space, we derive an analytic expression for the four-point function of conformally coupled scalars mediated by the tree-level exchange of massive scalars. Conformal symmetry implies that the correlator satisfies a pair of differential equations with respect to spatial momenta, encoding bulk time evolution in purely boundary terms. The absence of unphysical singularities (and the correct normalization of physical ones) completely fixes this correlator. Moreover, a “spin-raising” operator relates it to the correlators associated with the exchange of particles with spin, while “weight-shifting” operators map it to the four-point function of massless scalars. We explain how these de Sitter four-point functions can be perturbed to obtain inflationary three-point functions. Using our formalism, we reproduce many classic results in the literature, such as the three-point function of slow-roll inflation, and provide a complete classification of all inflationary three- and four-point functions arising from weakly broken conformal symmetry. Remarkably, the inflationary bispectrum associated with the exchange of particles with arbitrary spin is completely characterized by the soft limit of the simplest scalar-exchange four-point function of conformally coupled scalars and a series of contact terms. Finally, we demonstrate that the inflationary correlators contain flat-space scattering amplitudes via a suitable analytic continuation of the external momenta, which can also be directly connected with the signals for particle production seen in the squeezed limit.

Analytic and numerical bootstrap of CFTs with $O(m)\times O(n)$ global symmetry in 3D

Motivated by applications to critical phenomena and open theoretical questions, we study conformal field theories with O(m)\times O(n) O ( m ) × O ( n ) global symmetry in d=3 d = 3 spacetime dimensions. We use both analytic and numerical bootstrap techniques. Using the analytic bootstrap, we calculate anomalous dimensions and OPE coefficients as power series in \varepsilon=4-d ε = 4 − d and in 1/n 1 / n , with a method that generalizes to arbitrary global symmetry. Whenever comparison is possible, our results agree with earlier results obtained with diagrammatic methods in the literature. Using the numerical bootstrap, we obtain a wide variety of operator dimension bounds, and we find several islands (isolated allowed regions) in parameter space for O(2)\times O(n) O ( 2 ) × O ( n ) theories for various values of n n . Some of these islands can be attributed to fixed points predicted by perturbative methods like the \varepsilon ε and large- n n expansions, while others appear to arise due to fixed points that have been claimed to exist in resummations of perturbative beta functions.

Asymptotic symmetry algebra of N = 8 supergravity

The asymptotic symmetry algebra of N = 1 supergravity was recently constructed using the well-known two-dimensional celestial conformal field (CFT) theory technique [A. Fotopoulos , ]. In this paper, we extend the construction to the maximally supersymmetric four-dimensional N = 8 supergravity theory in asymptotically flat spacetime and construct the extended asymptotic symmetry algebra, which we call N = 8 s b m s 4 . We use the celestial CFT technique to find the appropriate currents for extensions of N = 8 super-Poincaré and SU ( 8 ) R R-symmetry current algebra on the celestial sphere C S 2 . We generalize the definition of shadow transformations and show that there is infinite dimensional extension of the global SU ( 8 ) R algebra in the theory. On the holographic dual of a topological symmetry operator

We study the holographic dual of a topological symmetry operator in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Symmetry operators arise from topological field theories localized on a subspace of the boundary conformal field theory spacetime. We use bottom up considerations to construct the topological sector associated with their bulk counterparts. In particular, by exploiting the structure of entanglement wedge reconstruction we argue that the bulk counterpart has a nontopological world volume action, i.e., it describes a dynamical object. As a consequence, we find that there are no global 𝑝-form symmetries for 𝑝 ≥ 0 in asymptotically anti–de Sitter spacetimes, which includes the case of noninvertible symmetries. Provided one has a suitable notion of subregion-subregion duality, our argument for the absence of bulk global symmetries applies to more general spacetimes. These considerations also motivate us to consider for general QFTs (holographic or not) the notion of lower-form symmetries, namely, (−𝑚)-form symmetries for 𝑚 ≥ 2.

Anomalies of coset non-invertible symmetries

Anomalies of global symmetries provide important information on the quantum dynamics. We show the dynamical constraints can be organized into three classes: genuine anomalies, fractional topological responses, and integer responses that can be realized in symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. Coset symmetry can be present in many physical systems including quantum spin liquids, and the coset symmetry can be a non-invertible symmetry. We introduce twists in coset symmetries, which modify the fusion rules and the generalized Frobenius-Schur indicators. We call such coset symmetries twisted coset symmetries, and they are labeled by the quadruple (G, K, ω D+1 , α D ) in D spacetime dimensions where G is a group and K ⊂ G is a discrete subgroup, ω D+1 is a (D + 1)-cocycle for group G, and α D is a D-cochain for group K. We present several examples with twisted coset symmetries using lattice models and field theory, including both gapped and gapless systems (such as gapless symmetry-protected topological phases). We investigate the anomalies of general twisted coset symmetry, which presents obstructions to realizing the coset symmetry in (gapped) symmetry-protected topological phases. We show that finite coset symmetry G/K becomes anomalous when G cannot be expressed as the bicrossed product G = H ⋈ K , and such anomalous coset symmetry leads to symmetry-enforced gaplessness in generic spacetime dimensions. We illustrate examples of anomalous coset symmetries with A 5 / \Z 2 symmetry, with realizations in lattice models.

Black hole perturbations of massive and partially massless spin-2 fields in (anti) de Sitter spacetime

We provide a systematic and comprehensive derivation of the linearized dynamics of massive and partially massless spin-2 particles in a Schwarzschild (anti) de Sitter black hole background, in four and higher spacetime dimensions. In particular, we show how to obtain the quadratic actions for the propagating modes and recast the resulting equations of motion in a Schrödinger-like form. In the case of partially massless fields in Schwarzschild de Sitter spacetime, we study the isospectrality between modes of different parity. In particular, we prove isospectrality analytically for modes with multipole number L = 1 in four spacetime dimensions, providing the explicit form of the underlying symmetry. We show that isospectrality between partially massless modes of different parity is broken in higher-dimensional Schwarzschild de Sitter spacetimes.

Hidden symmetry in the double copy

We show that the Killing tensor of the Kerr spacetime has an analogue in the $\sqrt{Kerr}$ gauge theory solution related to it by the classical double copy. This hidden symmetry of $\sqrt{Kerr}$ leads to an additional constant of motion for color-charged point particles moving in it, implying integrability of the equation of motion. These are the gauge theory counterparts to the Carter constant and the integrability of the geodesic equation in a Kerr background.

Additivity, Haag duality, and non-invertible symmetries

The algebraic approach to quantum field theory focuses on the properties of local algebras, whereas the study of (possibly non-invertible) global symmetries emphasizes global aspects of the theory and spacetime. We study connections between these two perspectives by examining how either of two core algebraic properties — “additivity” or “Haag duality” — is violated in a 1+1D CFT or lattice model restricted to the symmetric sector of a general global symmetry. For the Verlinde symmetry of a bosonic diagonal RCFT, we find that additivity is violated whenever the symmetry algebra contains an invertible element, while Haag duality is violated whenever it contains a non-invertible element. We find similar phenomena for the Kramers-Wannier and Rep(D 8 ) non-invertible symmetries on spin chains.

Kleinian black holes

We prove there is a unique vacuum solution in split-signature spacetimes with Kleinian S O ( 2 , 1 ) spherical symmetry. We extend our analysis to accommodate a positive or negative cosmological constant and we prove the Kleinian spherically symmetric solutions to Einstein’s equation are locally isomorphic to the split-signature analogs of Schwarzschild–(anti)-de Sitter or Nariai spacetimes. Our analysis provides a Kleinian extension of Birkhoff’s theorem to metrics with split signature. Axisymmetric vacuum solutions are also considered, including (2,2) signature formulations of the Kerr and Taub-Newman-Unti-Tamburino metrics. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Non-invertible symmetries in finite-group gauge theory

We investigate the invertible and non-invertible symmetries of topological finite-group gauge theories in general spacetime dimensions, where the gauge group can be abelian or non-abelian. We focus in particular on the 0-form symmetry. The gapped domain walls that generate these symmetries are specified by boundary conditions for the gauge fields on either side of the wall. We investigate the fusion rules of these symmetries and their action on other topological defects including the Wilson lines, magnetic fluxes, and gapped boundaries. We illustrate these constructions with various novel examples, including non-invertible electric-magnetic duality symmetry in 3+1d \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 gauge theory, and non-invertible analogs of electric-magnetic duality symmetry in non-abelian finite-group gauge theories. In particular, we discover topological domain walls that obey Fibonacci fusion rules in 2+1d gauge theory with dihedral gauge group of order 8. We also generalize the Cheshire string defect to analogous defects of general codimensions and gauge groups and show that they form a closed fusion algebra.

New nonrenormalization theorem from UV/IR mixing

In this paper, we prove a new nonrenormalization theorem which arises from UV/IR mixing. This theorem and its corollaries are relevant for all four-dimensional perturbative tachyon-free closed string theories which can be realized from higher-dimensional theories via geometric compactifications. As such, our theorem therefore holds regardless of the presence or absence of spacetime supersymmetry and regardless of the gauge symmetries or matter content involved. This theorem resolves a hidden clash between modular invariance and the process of decompactification, and enables us to uncover a number of surprising phenomenological properties of these theories. Chief among these is the fact that certain physical quantities within such theories cannot exhibit logarithmic or power-law running and instead enter an effective fixed-point regime above the compactification scale. This cessation of running occurs as the result of the UV/IR mixing inherent in the theory. These effects apply not only for gauge couplings but also for the Higgs mass and other quantities of phenomenological interest, thereby eliminating the logarithmic and/or power-law running that might have otherwise appeared for such quantities. These results illustrate the power of UV/IR mixing to tame divergences—even without supersymmetry—and reinforce the notion that UV/IR mixing may play a vital role in resolving hierarchy problems without supersymmetry. The Cosmological Bootstrap: Spinning correlators from symmetries and factorization

We extend the cosmological bootstrap to correlators involving massless spinning particles, focusing on spin-1 and spin-2. In de Sitter space, these correlators are constrained both by symmetries and by locality. In particular, the de Sitter isometries become conformal symmetries on the future boundary of the spacetime, which are reflected in a set of Ward identities that the boundary correlators must satisfy. We solve these Ward identities by acting with weight-shifting operators on scalar seed solutions. Using this weight-shifting approach, we derive three- and four-point correlators of massless spin-1 and spin-2 fields with conformally coupled scalars. Four-point functions arising from tree-level exchange are singular in particular kinematic configurations, and the coefficients of these singularities satisfy certain factorization properties. We show that in many cases these factorization limits fix the structure of the correlators uniquely, without having to solve the conformal Ward identities. The additional constraint of locality for massless spinning particles manifests itself as current conservation on the boundary. We find that the four-point functions only satisfy current conservation if the s, t, and u-channels are related to each other, leading to nontrivial constraints on the couplings between the conserved currents and other operators in the theory. For spin-1 currents this implies charge conservation, while for spin-2 currents we recover the equivalence principle from a purely boundary perspective. For multiple spin-1 fields, we recover the structure of Yang--Mills theory. Finally, we apply our methods to slow-roll inflation and derive a few phenomenologically relevant scalar-tensor three-point functions.

Gravitational analog of the canonical acoustic black hole in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory

In this work, in the context of modified gravity, a curved spacetime analogous to the 'canonical acoustic black hole (CABH)' is constructed. The source is a self-interacting scalar field which is non-minimally coupled to gravity through the Gauss–Bonnet invariant. The scalar-Gauss–Bonnet coupling function is characterized by three positive parameters: σ with units of (length), μ with units of (length)4, and a dimensionless parameter s, thus defining a three-parameter model for which the line element of CABH is a solution. The spacetime is equipped with spherical and static symmetry and has a single horizon determined in Schwarzschild coordinates by the region r = μ^(1/4). The solution admits a photon sphere at r = (3μ)^(1/4), and it is shown that in the region (3μ)^(1/4) ⩽ r < ∞ the scalar field satisfies the null, weak, and strong energy conditions. Nonetheless, the model with s = 1 has major physical relevance since for this case the scalar field is well defined in the entire region r ⩾ μ^(1/4), while for s ≠ 1 the scalar field blows up on the horizon.
