Pd and octahedra do not get along: Square planar [PdS 4 ] units in non-centrosymmetric La 6 PdSi 2 S 14

Non-linear optical (NLO) materials require a balance of high second-harmonic generation (SHG) signal and laser damage threshold (LDT), as well as phase matchable behavior. Herein, we report a new member of the (RE) 6 (TM) x (Tt) 2 Q 14 family of compounds, La 6 PdSi 2 S 14 , which, unlike all other reported TM analogues crystallizing in hexagonal P6 3 space group, crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric monoclinic P2 1 space group. The crystal structure contains chains of edge-sharing distorted square planar [PdS 4 ] units. The square-planar coordination of Pd in La 6 PdSi 2 S 14 exhibits remarkable NLO properties with high SHG (3.7 × AgGaS 2 ) and LDT (3 × AgGaS 2 ) values as well as phase matchability. This shows the promise of novel materials with distorted structural motifs for enhanced NLO properties. Further, upon formation of bimetallic chiral sulfides containing both Cu and Pd, Cu occupies the opposite faces of the octahedra forming [CuS 3 ] units while Pd can be stabilized in the center of PdS 6 octahedra in the hexagonal P6 3 crystal structure of La 6 Pd 0.5 CuSi 2 S 14 . This suggests that it is possible to form mixed metal systems which could further enhance NLO properties by incorporation of additional structural distortions.

Pressure-Dependent Phase Behavior of Chemically Synthesized Ytterbium Hydride Nanoparticles and Confinement in CMK-3

In this work, we developed a chemical synthesis protocol to prepare both spherical and rod shaped YbH x nanoparticles and infiltrate a mesoporous CMK-3 structure with YbH x nanoparticles. The phase evolution of the YbH x nanoparticles was monitored as a function of the pressure in a diamond anvil cell. The cell volume of the Yb atom showed an unexpected positive deviation from the calculated equation of state (EoS) for the α-phase (space group Pnma) of YbH x . Additionally, the β-phase (space group Fm3̅m) YbH x nanoparticles appeared to become amorphous at approximately 27 GPa, although the same behavior was not observed in the Pnma (α-phase). The Pmna phase remained stable (measured up to 59.3 GPa) and showed a significantly higher than expected volume per Yb atom relative to the calculated EoS. This deviation could be attributed to the nanoscale effect on the thermodynamics of ytterbium hydride formation, which could provide a path forward to accessing higher order ytterbium hydrides (YbH x , x > 3) at pressures much lower than in the bulk metal.

A New Family of Ternary Intermetallic Compounds with Dualistic Atomic Ordering – The ZIP Phases

A new family of nanostructured ternary intermetallic compounds − named the ZIP phases − is introduced in this work. The ZIP phases exhibit dualistic atomic ordering, i.e., they form two structural variants: one with the fcc diamond cubic structure (space group Fd$\bar{3}$m) and one with the hexagonal structure (space group P6 3 /mmc). They are also characterized by metallic behavior, ionic bonding, and atomic zigzagging. Powder metallurgical routes involving pressure-assisted densification are adopted to demonstrate ZIP phase synthesis in the Nb-Si-Ni, Nb-Si-Co, Ta-Si-Ni, V-Si-Ni, and Nb-Si-Fe ternary systems. Crucially, reactive hot pressing is capable of producing high-purity ZIP phase materials after the judicious, elemental system-specific optimization of the processing route. Synthesis of phase-pure materials – demonstrated in the Nb-Si-Ni ternary system by the synthesis of quasi phase-pure Nb 3 SiNi 2 and Ni 3 SiNb 2 ZIP phase-based materials – is a steppingstone to the prospective exploitation of the ZIP phases. Characterization of Nb 3 SiNi 2 and Ni 3 SiNb 2 involves crystal structure determination, spatially resolved chemical analysis, and determination of select thermal, electrical, magnetic, mechanical, and physical properties. Density functional theory is used to assess the stability of Nb 3 SiNi 2 & Ni 3 SiNb 2 and derivative binary compounds at different temperatures, also exploring the exfoliation of these two ZIP phases along specific surfaces to produce 2D derivatives.

Microwave-Assisted Solution Synthesis of Metastable Intergrowth of AgInS2 Polymorphs

The intergrowth of stable and metastable AgInS2 polymorphs was synthesized using a microwave-assisted synthesis. The samples were synthesized in water and in a deep eutectic solvent (DES) consisting of choline chloride and thiourea. An increase in the metal precursor concentration improved the crystallinity of the synthesized samples and affected the particle size. AgInS2 cannot be synthesized from crystalline binary Ag2S or In2S3 via this route. The solution synthesis reported here results in the intergrowth of the thermodynamically stable polymorph (space group I4¯2d, chalcopyrite structure) and the high-temperature polymorph (space group Pna21, wurtzite-like structure) that is metastable at room temperature. A scanning transmission microscopy (STEM) study revealed the intergrowth of tetragonal and orthorhombic polymorphs in a single particle and unambiguously established that the long-thought hexagonal wurtzite polymorph has pseudo-hexagonal symmetry and is best described with the orthorhombic unit cell. The solution-synthesized AgInS2 polymorphs intergrowth has slightly lower bandgap values in the range of 1.73 eV–1.91 eV compared to the previously reported values for tetragonal I4¯2d (1.86 eV) and orthorhombic Pna21 (1.98 eV) polymorphs.

Chiral Dirac Fermion in a Collinear Antiferromagnet

In a Dirac semimetal, the massless Dirac fermion has zero chirality, leading to surface states connected adiabatically to a topologically trivial surface state as well as vanishing anomalous Hall effect. Recently, it is predicted that in the nonrelativistic limit of certain collinear antiferromagnets, there exists a type of chiral "Dirac-like" fermion, whose dispersion manifests four-fold degenerate crossing points formed by spin-degenerate linear bands, with topologically protected Fermi arcs. Such an unconventional chiral fermion, protected by a hidden SU(2) symmetry in the hierarchy of an enhanced crystallographic group, namely spin space group, is not experimentally verified yet. Here, by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements, we reveal the surface origin of the electron pocket at the Fermi surface in collinear antiferromagnet CoNb 3 S 6 . Combining with neutron diffraction and first-principles calculations, we suggest a multidomain collinear antiferromagnetic configuration, rendering the the existence of the Fermi-arc surface states induced by chiral Dirac-like fermions. Finally, our work provides spectral evidence of the chiral Dirac-like fermion caused by particular spin symmetry in CoNb 3 S 6 , paving an avenue for exploring new emergent phenomena in antiferromagnets with unconventional quasiparticle excitations.

Enumeration as a Tool for Structure Solution: A Materials Genomic Approach to Solving the Cation-Ordered Structure of Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3

While powder diffraction methods are routinely utilized to optimize structural models for compounds whose crystal structures are known, the determination of unknown structures is far more challenging. When the unknown structure is large, structure solution can become a virtually intractable problem using standard structure solution methodologies, especially when the space group cannot be unambiguously resolved. One such system is the promising Na-ion battery cathode material Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3 whose high temperature and room temperature structures were previously solved, but whose more complex low-temperature structure could not be determined. Here, a novel materials genomic approach is demonstrated for the solution of the unknown 100 K structure of Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3 in which enumeration methods are first used to generate a large number (~3,000) of trial structures based on plausible orderings of Na ions and then automated Rietveld refinements are carried out to optimize each of these trial structures. Based on both the analysis of the ensemble of optimized trial structures and the density functional theory energy minimization of selected trial structures, the 100 K structure of Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3 is best described as belonging to the space group A2 1 am with unit cell dimensions of a = 9.01928(4), b = 27.1379(1), c = 10.73307(5). The 100 K unit cell has a large volume of 2627.07(2) Å 3 with Z = 12 and 33 independent crystallographic sites (9 Na, 3 V, 3 P, 12 O, and 6 F) that is 3x and 6x larger than the room- and high-temperature polymorphs of this phase, respectively. Finally, the novel methods described here will be generally applicable for the solution of the complex cation-ordered structures that commonly occur for battery materials.

Synchrotron X‐Ray‐Driven Nitrogen Reduction on an AgCu Thin Film

Abstract Nitrogen (N 2 ) is an essential element for life, but kinetically stable N 2 in the atmosphere needs to be reduced to biologically available forms as a nutrient for organisms. Abiotic nitrogen fixation is critical to the origin of life on the early Earth, which is due to lightning or mineral‐based reduction. Here, synchrotron X‐ray‐induced silver nitrate formation on a silver copper (AgCu) thin‐film is reported. Time‐resolved X‐ray diffraction measurements show that under intense X‐ray exposure, initially formed silver oxides (AgOx) are quickly converted to silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ). Interestingly, AgNO 3 is first formed in its high‐temperature phase with a space group of R3cH , which gradually transforms to the room temperature phase with a space group of Pbca under continuous X‐ray irradiation. The result not only provides a new clue about the abiotic nitrogen reduction prior to life but also demonstrates a novel strategy of materials synthesis using synchrotron X‐rays.

ACuZrQ 3 (A = Rb, Cs; Q = S, Se, Te): Direct Bandgap Semiconductors and Metals with Ultralow Thermal Conductivity

ACuZrQ 3 (A = Rb, Cs; Q = S, Se, Te) were synthesized as black platelet crystals. RbCuZrS 3 , RbCuZrSe 3 , and CsCuZrS 3 crystallize in the KCuZrSe 3 structure type with space group Cmcm, and RbCuZrTe 3 and CsCuZrTe 3 crystallize in the lower symmetry space group Pnma. The tellurides exhibit a second order Jahn-Teller distortion with off-centering of Zr in its octahedral environment. The magnitude of the distortion is larger in RbCuZrTe 3 than in CsCuZrTe 3 . The structures of beta-CsCuS 4 and Rb 2 Cu 5 Te 5 were also determined. CsCuZrS 3 melts at 910 C-circle and exhibits partial decomposition upon heating at 275 C-circle, while CsCuZrTe 3 melts incongruently. Our DFT calculations of RbCuZrQ 3 (Q = S, Se) and CsCuZrS 3 indicate direct gap semiconductors in agreement with experiments. ACuZrTe 3 (A = Rb, Cs) were calculated to be metals which was confirmed for RbCuZrTe 3 with variable temperature conductivity measurements and consistent with heat capacity measurements. Spectroscopic measurements found a bandgap and work function of 1.44(5) eV and 4.89(5) eV for RbCuZrS 3 and 0.95(5) eV and 4.67(5) eV for RbCuZrSe 3 , respectively. Finally, RbCuZrTe 3 did not exhibit an optical bandgap and has a work function of 4.64(5) eV. RbCuZrTe 3 exhibits a low thermal conductivity under 0.5 W m -1 K -1 at room temperature.

A series of Rb 4 Ln 2 (P 2 S 6 )(PS 4 ) 2 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd) rare earth thiophosphates with two distinct thiophosphate units [P V S 4 ] 3- and [P IV 2 S 6 ] 4-

A series of rubidium rare earth thiophosphates with the formula Rb 4 Ln 2 (P 2 S 6 )(PS 4 ) 2 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, and Gd) were synthesized using the high temperature molten flux crystal growth method utilizing a RbBr flux. Single crystals of all title compounds, as well as phase pure powders of the La-, Ce-, and Sm-containing compositions, were obtained. Single crystals of the title compounds were characterized by single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction for structure and phase identification. Rb 4 Ln 2 (P 2 S 6 )(PS 4 ) 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system adopting the P2 1 /n space group for the large rare earths (Ln = La, Ce, Pr) and the C2/c space group for the smaller rare earths (Ln = Nd, Sm, Gd). This Rb 4 Ln 2 (P 2 S 6 )(PS 4 ) 2 series is a rare example of thiophosphates containing both tetrahedral [P V S 4 ] 3– and dimeric [P IV 2 S 6 ] 4– thiophosphate units that, in this structural family, link corrugated rare earth sulfide chains into sheets. Here, the band gaps of the materials were determined from UV–Vis data and the fluorescence spectrum of Rb 4 Ce 2 (P 2 S 6 )(PS 4 ) 2 was collected. Optical band gaps were estimated to be 2.9 and 2.4 for the Nd and Sm analogues, respectively.

“Breathing” organic cation to stabilize multiple structures in low-dimensional Ge-, Sn-, and Pb-based hybrid iodide perovskites

Low-dimensional hybrid inorganic–organic perovskites are excellent candidates for stable optoelectronic devices. The dimensionality of these perovskites depends largely on the organic and inorganic compositions, as well as the synthetic conditions. We report five new hybrid iodides, (ETU) 4 Ge 5 I 18 , (ETU)GeI 4 , (ETU)SnI 4 , (ETU)PbI 4 , and (ETU) 3 Pb 2 I 10 using only one type of organic cation, namely, S-(2-aminoethyl)isothiouronium (ETU). (ETU)GeI 4 and (ETU)SnI 4 belong to the (110)-oriented structure-type with “3 × 3” sawtooth corrugated layers and crystallize in a structure with the orthorhombic space group Pbca. (ETU) 4 Ge 5 I 18 crystallizes in a structure with the triclinic space group P$\bar{1}$with combining macron], featuring a 2D layered structure with combinations of corner, edge, and face-sharing [GeI 6 ] octahedra. For the Pb-based series, (ETU)PbI 4 has the conventional (100) – oriented 2D type whereas (ETU) 3 Pb 2 I 10 has a unique 0D structure. Remarkably, the unstable 2D orange-phase (ETU)PbI 4 transforms to a stable 0D yellow phase (ETU) 3 Pb 2 I 10 , accompanied by the reduction of the C–S–C angle of the organic cation ETU. The optical band gaps are largely regulated by the diverse types of structure and are in the range of 1.8 eV to 2.8 eV. (ETU)SnI 4 is the only material showing notable photoluminescence at room-temperature. Our work showcases the flexibility of the organic cation in determining the structural dimensionality and provides a new strategy in generating new hybrid materials.

Physical properties investigation of tetragonal Ba T 2 P 2 (T = Ru, Pd)

The structural, thermal, electrical transport, and magnetic properties of ternary compounds BaT 2 P 2 (T = Ru, Pd) are reported together with electronic structure calculations. Our results show that BaRu 2 P 2 crystallises in the layered tetragonal ThCr 2 Si 2 -type structure (space group I4/mmm) whereas BaPd 2 P 2 adopts the primitive tetragonal CeMg 2 Si 2 -type structure (space group P4/mmm). The combined experimental results and electronic structure calculations suggest metallic and diamagnetic ground states for both materials. Electrical transport measurements further indicate non-Fermi liquid behaviour at low temperatures. Notably, BaRu 2 P 2 exhibits an anomalous feature in the magnetic susceptibility at T ~ 260 K, similar to that observed in BaRu 2 As 2 . A comparison between the bare density of states obtained from electronic structure calculations and the experimentally estimated values suggests the presence of strong correlation effects in the material. Furthermore, the heat capacity of BaPd 2 P 2 , calculated using the full phonon dispersion relation, is in good agreement with the experimental data, particularly at low temperatures, highlighting the significant contribution of optical phonon branches to C P in this temperature range.

Topological invariants of a filling-enforced quantum band insulator

Traditional ionic and covalent compound insulators arise from a commensuration between electron count and system volume. On the other hand, conventional topological insulators, outside of quantum Hall effect systems, do not typically display such a commensuration. Instead, they can undergo a phase transition to a trivial insulator that preserves the electron filling. Nevertheless, in some crystalline insulators, termed filling-enforced quantum band insulators (feQBIs), electron filling can dictate nontrivial topology in the insulating ground state. Currently, little is known about the relation between feQBIs and conventional topological invariants. In this work, we study such relations for a particularly interesting example of a half-filling feQBI that is realized in space group 106 with spinless electrons. In this work, we prove that any four-band feQBI in space group 106 with filling 2 must have a nontrivial topological invariant, namely, the $\mathbb{Z}$ 2 glide invariant, and thus must have a quantized magnetoelectric polarizability θ = π. We thus have found a three-dimensional example where electron filling and band topology are tied. Such a locking raises intriguing questions about the generality of the band-inversion paradigm in describing the transition between trivial and topological phases.

Broadband light emitting zero-dimensional antimony and bismuth-based hybrid halides with diverse structures

Low-dimensional organic–inorganic metal halides have recently attracted extensive attention because of their various structures and distinguished photoelectric properties. Herein, we report a series of new zero-dimensional organic–inorganic hybrid metal halides: (TMEDA) 3 Bi 2 Cl 12 ·H 2 O, (TMEDA) 3 Bi 2 Br 12 ·H 2 O, (TMEDA) 3 Sb 2 Br 12 ·H 2 O, and (TMEDA) 5 Sb 6 Cl 28 ·2H 2 O [TMEDA = N,N,N'·trimethylethylenediamine]. (TMEDA) 3 M 2 X 12 ·H 2 O (M = Bi or Sb, X = Cl or Br) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2 1 /n, and (TMEDA) 5 Sb 6 Cl 28 ·2H 2 O crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma. (TMEDA) 3 M 2 X 12 possesses a zero-dimensional structure with the metal halide ions of [MBr 6 ] 3- isolated by the organic TMEDA 2+ cations. Interestingly, the (TMEDA) 5 Sb 6 Cl 28 ·2H 2 O structure consists of a combination of corner-connected octahedra [Sb 4 Cl 18 ] 6- and edge-shared [Sb 2 Cl 10 ] 4- , which is quite rare. The light emission of all these compounds was measured, and (TMEDA) 3 Sb 2 Br 12 ·H 2 O exhibits the most intense luminescence. Upon 400 nm ultraviolet light excitation, (TMEDA) 3 Sb 2 Br 12 ·H 2 O exhibited strong broadband yellow emission centered at 625 nm with a full-width at half-maximum of ~150 nm originating from self-trapped excitons. In conclusion, this work suggests the possibility of new types of hybrid halides by introducing different metal centers and probing the structural evolution and photoluminescent properties, serving as a reference for the relationship between structure and luminescent performance and demonstrating their potential use as phosphors in light-emitting diodes.

Cation reordering instead of phase transitions: Origins and implications of contrasting lithiation mechanisms in 1D ζ- and 2D α-V 2 O 5

Substantial improvements in cycle life, rate performance, accessible voltage, and reversible capacity are required to realize the promise of Li-ion batteries in full measure. Here, we have examined insertion electrodes of the same composition (V 2 O 5 ) prepared according to the same electrode specifications and comprising particles with similar dimensions and geometries that differ only in terms of their atomic connectivity and crystal structure, specifically two-dimensional (2D) layered α-V 2 O 5 that crystallizes in an orthorhombic space group and one-dimensional (1D) tunnel-structured ζ-V 2 O 5 crystallized in a monoclinic space group. By using particles of similar dimensions, we have disentangled the role of specific structural motifs and atomistic diffusion pathways in affecting electrochemical performance by mapping the dynamical evolution of lithiation-induced structural modifications using ex situ scanning transmission X-ray microscopy, operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements, and phase-field modeling. We find the operation of sharply divergent mechanisms to accommodate increasing concentrations of Li-ions: a series of distortive phase transformations that result in puckering and expansion of interlayer spacing in layered α-V 2 O 5 , as compared with cation reordering along interstitial sites in tunnel-structured ζ-V 2 O 5 . By alleviating distortive phase transformations, the ζ-V 2 O 5 cathode shows reduced voltage hysteresis, increased Li-ion diffusivity, alleviation of stress gradients, and improved capacity retention. The findings demonstrate that alternative lithiation mechanisms can be accessed in metastable compounds by dint of their reconfigured atomic connectivity and can unlock substantially improved electrochemical performance not accessible in the thermodynamically stable phase.

Luminescence of alkali rare earth borates A 3 Ln(BO 3 ) 2 (A = Na, K; Ln = Eu, Tb)

Single crystals of a series of rare earth borates, A 3 Ln (BO 3 ) (A = Na, K; Ln = Eu, Tb), were synthesized using a boric acid/hydroxide melt. The Na 3 Ln (BO 3 ) 2 borates crystallized in the monoclinic system with space group P2 1 /n, and the K 3 Ln (BO 3 ) 2 borates crystallized in the orthorhombic system with space group Pnma. Here, the luminescence of these borates was investigated under ultraviolet and X-ray excitations for the first time. Radioluminescence (RL) measurements showed K 3 Tb(BO 3 ) 2 to be the brightest compound, with an integral intensity equal to 55% of the integral emission of Bi 4 Ge 3 O 12 (BGO) powder.

High-pressure phase transitions and melt structure of Pb O 2 : An analog for silica

In situ x-ray diffraction measurements and inverse Monte Carlo simulations of pair distribution functions were used to study the structural response of PbO 2 under pressure and to characterize the local structure of liquid PbO 2 . Two phase transitions are observed upon room-temperature compression of crystalline PbO 2 up to ~65 GPa. Here, the starting mixture of rutile structured β– PbO 2 and orthorhombic α– PbO 2 undergoes a transition to a ZrO 2 -type orthorhombic phase with space group Pbca at ~21 GPa. Above 42 GPa, the Pbca phase transforms to a cotunnite-type phase with space group Pnam. In this paper, we also report short-range order in liquid PbO 2 , showing ~8–9-fold and 4–5-fold coordination around Pb and O atoms, respectively.

Symmetric U(1) and Z 2 spin liquids on the pyrochlore lattice

The geometrically frustrated three-dimensional pyrochlore lattice has been long predicted to host a quantum spin liquid, an intrinsic long-range entangled state with fractionalized excitations. To date, most proposals for pyrochlore materials have focused on quantum spin ice, a U(1) quantum spin liquid whose only low energy excitations are emergent photons of Maxwell type. Here, we explore the possibility of finding pyrochlore quantum spin liquids whose low energy theories go beyond this standard one. We give a complete classification of symmetric U ( 1 ) and Z 2 spin liquids on the pyrochlore lattice within the projective symmetry group framework for fermionic spinons. We find 18 U ( 1 ) spin liquids and 28 Z 2 spin liquids that preserve pyrochlore space-group symmetry while, upon further imposing time-reversal symmetry, the numbers of classes become 16 and 48, respectively. For each class, the most general symmetry-allowed spinon mean-field Hamiltonian is given. Interestingly, we find that several U(1) spin liquid classes possess an unusual gapless multi-nodal-line structure (“nodal star”) in the spinon bands, which is protected by the projective actions of the threefold rotation and screw symmetries of the pyrochlore space group. Through a simple model, we study the effect of gauge fluctuations on such a nodal star spin liquid and propose that the leading terms in the low temperature specific heat have the scaling form C / T ~ T + T / ln T , in contrast to the form C / T ~ T 2 of the standard U(1) pyrochlore spin liquid with gapped spinons.

Eu 5 Al 3 Sb 6 : Al 4 Tetrahedra Embedded in a Rock-Salt-Like Structure

The new Eu 5 Al 3 Sb 6 phase has been successfully synthesized as a pure phase through Sn flux methods yielding large, high-quality crystals. This structure type features disordered Al clusters that appear in the form of dual tetrahedra. It crystallizes in the monoclinic C2/m space group exhibiting a rock-salt-like Eu–Sb framework with [Al 4 ] tetrahedra replacing some of the cationic Eu atoms (space group: C2/m, a = 8.151(1) Å, b = 14.181(2) Å, c = 8.145(1) Å, β = 109.577(2)°). The structure models the [Al 4 ] as dual tetrahedra with the Al atom sites 37.5% occupied along with Eu present on the central site at 8% occupancy and the remainder of the site being vacant. The presence of the [Al 4 ] cluster is further supported by HRTEM. Electronic structure calculations show that this material is a semimetal with observed band crossings close to the Fermi level. Strong Al–Sb antibonding interactions were found from COHP calculations close to the Fermi level and provide the rationale for the deficiency of the Al cluster. Mössbauer spectroscopy on Eu-151 and Sb-121 provides oxidation states of 2+ and 3– along with the local environment. Magnetic susceptibility measurements can be described well with a Curie–Weiss law where an effective moment of 7.80 μB/mol Eu is obtained, consistent with Eu 2+ , and show canted antiferromagnetic behavior below 10 K. Temperature dependent resistivity shows a Kondo-like low-temperature upturn caused by enhanced scattering of the itinerant electrons with the 4f orbitals of Eu.
