Process Failure Detection via Recurrence Quantification Analysis in a Slot-Rectangular Spouted Bed

A study was conducted to explore the applicability of recurrence and recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) to the detection of process failures in spouted bed reactor systems. Here, three different potential failure modes were examined in a transparent, cold flow slot-rectangular spouted bed. These being, a simulated air leak from a side wall of the reactor, a simulated gas leak from the top wall of the reactor, and simulated agglomeration of solids via introduction of larger “klinker” particles. Bed pressure drop time history data were collected and analyzed via generation of recurrence plots (RPs) and RQA parameters. In general, the simulated agglomeration case was quite easily detected via ever RQA Parameter examined, whereas the simulated air leaks were detected by only a single RQA parameter.

Roll-to-roll slot die coating method to create interleaving multi-layered films with chemical slurry coatings

An improved method for manufacturing a continuous self-healing barrier film is provided. The method includes slot-die coating opposing sides of a separator substrate with a curing agent slurry and a curable resin slurry using a single-sided coating line or a tandem coating line. The method also includes sequentially interleaving inner and outer protective layers via a continuous roll-to-roll process to create a multi-layered barrier film. The barrier film can optionally be formed into a barrier envelope, and an insulating core material can be inserted into the barrier envelope to define an enclosure. Evacuating and sealing the enclosure along a perimeter of the barrier envelop forms a self-healing vacuum insulation panel with excellent properties for use as a building material and in refrigeration systems, for example. The barrier film can alternatively be used in the manufacture of tires, roofing, cargo containers, food packaging, and pharmaceutical packaging, for example.

High‐Speed Slot‐Die Coating with Donor‐Priority Rapid Aggregation Kinetics for Improved Morphology and Efficiency in Ecofriendly Organic Solar Cells

Abstract Solution‐processable organic solar cells (OSCs) represent a promising renewable photovoltaic technology with significant potential for eco‐compatible production. While high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) have been achieved in OSCs, scaling this technology for high‐throughput manufacturing remains challenging. Key reason lies in the lack of efficient control strategies for the complex and long‐duration morphology evolution during high‐speed coating process with ecofriendly solvents. Here, a donor‐priority rapid aggregation process (DP‐RAP) scheme is proposed to solve this issue by adjusting the aggregation kinetics of donor and acceptor components. DP‐RAP enables blends with a nanoscale fiber network structure and favorable crystallinity, which contributes to balanced carrier transport and reduced recombination losses. As a result, the PCE is improved from 14.3% (reference) to 17.4% (DP‐RAP) for ultra‐high speed coated PM6:BTP‐eC9 devices in atmosphere, which is one of the highest values for non‐halogenated solvent‐processed solar cells at coating speeds of 500 mm s −1 . Moreover, the DP‐RAP based devices remain a stable PCE of approximately 17.4% across a broad range of coating speeds (20–500 mm s −1 ), illustrating its tolerance to the varied manufacturing conditions. This work highlights a promising avenue for the high‐speed, ecofriendly production of efficient OSCs, pushing the boundaries of practical manufacturing in renewable energy technologies.

Optimal Allocation of Proton Therapy Slots in Combined Proton-Photon Radiation Therapy

Proton therapy is a limited resource that is not available to all patients who may benefit from it. We investigated combined proton-photon treatments, in which some fractions are delivered with protons and the remaining fractions with photons, as an approach to maximize the benefit of limited proton therapy resources at a population level.

Static characterization of a highly optimized streak tube design incorporating a steering slot anode and an aberration-corrected Einzel lens

The BHx streak tube, under development at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, incorporates a series of novel electron-optics elements to enable high fidelity measurements for high-energy-density physics experiments. The system is engineered to support a 25-mm active photocathode region compatible with sub-picosecond temporal resolution and with 70% internal photoelectron throughput. It exhibits negligible geometric distortion on a flat output screen, making it well suited for variety of measurements, such as ultrafast x-ray spectroscopy. Here, this paper presents characterization data from a prototype unit tested with an ultraviolet laser in a static deflection (non-swept) mode and shows good agreement with the predictions from numerical modeling, including focusing performance and geometric distortion measurements. Key design elements have been demonstrated and de-risked, laying the foundation for dynamic deflection testing. The anticipated improvements in data fidelity are expected to impact the fields as diverse as inertial confinement fusion, laboratory astrophysics, and materials science.
