Field testing and validation of a low-cost MPC for demand flexibility for grid-interactive K-12 schools

K-12 school buildings account for the highest energy consumption within the public sector. Implementing advanced HVAC controls in grid-interactive K-12 schools could bring substantial economic advantages and grid flexibility. Our previous study demonstrated that a low-cost model predictive control (MPC) solution, which coordinates multiple packaged units, can enable demand flexibility without major hardware upgrades. However, a significant gap remains between academic pilots and market-ready scalable solutions. This paper extends the previous single-site pilot to a multi-site demonstration involving three school campuses (95 total units) through a commercial technology transfer process. Addressing the challenge of verifying performance with sparse field data, we present a new statistical approach using Bayesian methods to estimate the MPC’s effect on peak demand. Unlike traditional methods, this approach robustly quantifies uncertainty in non-normal, limited datasets. The results confirm the solution’s replicability, achieving a 21.6–38.9% reduction in HVAC peak demand (10.8–22.1% at the site-level) with > 98% probability across diverse locations. Finally, we document critical barriers to scaling software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions–such as API instability and diverse legacy systems–and offer practical strategies to accelerate the commercial adoption of grid-interactive efficient buildings.

AmeriFlux FLUXNET-1F US-xDC NEON Dakota Coteau Field School (DCFS)

This is the AmeriFlux Management Project (AMP) created FLUXNET-1F version of the carbon flux data for the site US-xDC NEON Dakota Coteau Field School (DCFS). This is the FLUXNET version of the carbon flux data for the site US-xDC NEON Dakota Coteau Field School (DCFS) produced by applying the standard ONEFlux (1F) software. Site Description - The Dakota Coteau Field School (DCFS) and Prairie Lake (PRLA) field sites are co-located in an agricultural area used primarily for cattle grazing, just a few miles east of the Woodworth and Prairie Pothole sites at the Chase Lake National Wildlife Refuge. DCFS covers 7.8 km2 (3 square miles) of grazing land in Stutsman County, ND, between the tiny communities of Pingree and Woodworth. The population here is sparse, but the land has been transformed by agricultural activities over the last 150 years. The field site has been used only for grazing, but other land in the surrounding area has been converted to corn and soybean production. DCFS is located in an area known as the "Prairie Pothole Region," a band of tall and mixed prairie that stretches across parts of North and South Dakota, Minnesota and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Historically, this area supported tall to mid-height prairie grasses, including blue gamma and green needlegrass. The land here is pocked by thousands of depressions left behind by glaciers 10,000 years ago, resulting in a series of small lakes and wetland areas known as prairie potholes. These potholes receive most of their water from spring snowmelt and are a primary source of groundwater recharge for the region. NEON data will help researchers monitor the effects of climate change on the Northern Plains ecosystem. Over the last 30 years, the hydrological cycle in the plains has changed dramatically, trending wetter overall and diverging from the historical ten-year cycles. Temperatures are also rising, leading to changes in plant phenology cycles and species distribution that could negatively impact migratory bird populations and other animal species.

American Chemical Society's summer school in nuclear and radiochemistry. Final report

The ACS Summer Schools in Nuclear and Radiochemistry (herein called “Summer Schools”) were held each year at San Jose State University (SJSU) and Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The Summer Schools are an intensive, six-week program that includes both a lecture component covering fundamental principles of nuclear chemistry and radiochemistry and a laboratory component providing hands-on experience for the students to observe and test many of the basic principles that they learn about in lecture and in the special seminars. Each site hosts 12 undergraduate students annually. Participants are selected from a nation-wide pool of applicants who are currently enrolled as undergraduates seeking bachelors’ degrees, preferably in disciplines of physical sciences or engineering. To broaden the students’ perspectives on nuclear science, prominent research scientists active in nuclear and/or radiochemical research participate in a Guest Lecture Series. Symposia emphasizing nuclear security, nuclear medicine, and career opportunities are conducted as a part of the program.

Vehicle-to-Grid Electric School Bus Commercialization Project

The Vehicle-to-Grid Electric School Bus Commercialization Project was chartered to advance the idea that the batteries in electric vehicles can play a valuable role in supporting the electric grid. As deployment of wind and solar generating resources accelerates to provide an ever-greater share of the nation’s electricity, concurrent investment in solutions that can offset their inherent intermittency will be necessary. Many types of energy storage systems have been proposed, and more than one type will find an economic fit in the grid of the future. Electric vehicle batteries have the potential to provide grid support services in an advantaged manner. The project’s method of exploring this proposition called for development and demonstration of a fleet of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) electric school buses. School buses were chosen because their energy storage capacity is large relative light-duty vehicles; they are typically domiciled in fleet settings; and the number of hours per year they are available for grid support services is high on an absolute basis (generally 80-85% of the hours in a year) and relative to other categories of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles.

Support of the Third Summer School and Workshop Focused on Theory and Applications of Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory, Electronic Excited States, and Excited State Dynamics

To create a community of scholars with a deep understanding of TDDFT and excited state methods, both their capabilities and limitations, and how they can be used to model the excited state properties and charge transfer in materials and molecules, we are planning the third iteration of a summer school and workshop focusing on theory and applications of TDDFT, Excited States, and Excited State Dynamics to be offered in the summer of 2023. The two iterations of the US-based school that we previously organized have been very successful with overwhelmingly positive feedback. There is a high level of engagement, enthusiasm, and active participation and networking amongst the students of the school and the scientists of the workshop.

Why Tunable? A Look at Schools Using Tunable Lighting

Between 2016-2019, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), documented two early pilot installations of tunable lighting in schools, supported by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solid-State Lighting (SSL) program. These pilot installations were opportunities for the schools to become more familiar with the technology, save energy, and support teachers and students. Tunable lighting continues to be of interest, particularly in classrooms for students with disabilities. This case study looks at tunable lighting systems installed in classrooms at eight school districts across the U.S. since 2015, the earliest known installation.

COVID-19–Related School Closures, United States, July 27, 2020–June 30, 2022

As part of a multiyear project that monitored illness-related school closures, we conducted systematic daily online searches during July 27, 2020–June 30, 2022, to identify public announcements of COVID-19–related school closures (COVID-SCs) in the United States lasting ≥1 day. We explored the temporospatial patterns of COVID-SCs and analyzed associations between COVID-SCs and national COVID-19 surveillance data. COVID-SCs reflected national surveillance data: correlation was highest between COVID-SCs and both new PCR test positivity (correlation coefficient [r] = 0.73, 95% CI 0.56–0.84) and new cases (r = 0.72, 95% CI 0.54–0.83) during 2020–21 and with hospitalization rates among all ages (r = 0.81, 95% CI 0.67–0.89) during 2021–22. The numbers of reactive COVID-SCs during 2020–21 and 2021–22 greatly exceeded previously observed numbers of illness-related reactive school closures in the United States, notably being nearly 5-fold greater than reactive closures observed during the 2009 influenza (H1N1) pandemic.

Modeling and mitigating airborne pathogen risk factors in school buses

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models were developed to simulate the impact of different ventilation scenarios on airborne exposure risks in a 72-passenger school bus. Here, scenarios and factors that were investigated included a moving vs. stationary bus, impacts of a heating unit within the bus, and impacts of alternative ventilation scenarios with different combinations of openings (e.g., windows, door, emergency hatch). Results of the simulations showed that when the bus was stationary, use of the heater increased receptor concentrations unless there was another opening. When the bus was moving, simulations with at least two sets of openings separated from each other in the forward and aft directions produced a through-flow condition that reduced concentrations via dilution from outside air by a factor of ten or more. A single opening in a moving bus generally increased concentrations throughout the cabin due to increased mixing with minimal ventilation. The cumulative exposure risk (time-averaged concentrations) was found to be inversely correlated to the air exchange rate. Stationary and moving-bus scenarios that yielded above ~20 air changes per hour resulted in the lowest cumulative exposures. Recommendations from this study were implemented in new safety and operating procedures by the Albuquerque Public Schools Transportation Center.

Regional Carbon Emission Reduction Prediction via Retrofits of Commercial Buildings with a Case Study of US School Buildings in Hot Climates

Retrofitting commercial buildings has great potential to reduce carbon emissions as demonstrated by previous studies in some specific cities, but their regional carbon emission reduction potential is still unknown. Thus, we develop a method to predict the long-term regional carbon emission reduction potential by retrofitting commercial buildings. School buildings in hot climate zones in the continental U.S. are selected as an example. The results show that the aggregated carbon emission reduction potential of school buildings in that region reduces from 3.33 to 2.01 megatons from 2024 to 2050 due to the increased penetration of renewable energy.
