Deployment of portable, modular gas samplers as part of an atmospheric tracer experiment

Underground nuclear explosions release noble gases into the atmosphere that can be detected to support international monitoring efforts. Atmospheric transport models help predict the movement of these gases over long distances, but struggle to predict the movement in the atmosphere local to the release. A field experiment was designed to monitor the movement of 127 Xe within a 5-km radius. Four gas samplers were deployed as part of this experiment to collect atmospheric samples at various distances from the release point. In conclusion, these samples were then analyzed in a near-field lab using a NaI detector and in an off-site lab using gamma-gamma coincidence and beta-gamma coincidence counting.

Analysis of measurements from an array of radioxenon samplers near to Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station

As part of a scientific research and development project, the radionuclide fingerprint of an operating advanced gas-cooled reactor 25 (AGR) has been studied across several facets (Goodwin et al., 2024). One part of this project was to deploy an array of 26 radioxenon samplers to the region for a period of around 1 year, to measure any radioxenon emissions from the reactors of the 27 Hartlepool nuclear power station at a range of tens of kilometres away. The array of 3 sensors was operational for around 12 28 months from March 2022 and detected many occurrences of isotopes of radioxenon. Here we provide a detailed analysis and 29 interpretation of the data and where possible, attribution of detections to a source or region. Whilst a key part of this work is to 30 measure any emissions of radioxenon from Hartlepool, this work presents one of the most comprehensive efforts to determine the 31 source of a great number of (mostly) 133Xe detections. A combination of different types of atmospheric dispersion modelling 32 techniques, including the use of stack monitoring data from nearby civil radioxenon-emitting nuclear facilities has enabled the 33 majority of detections to be attributed to one or more possible sources. Whilst emissions from Hartlepool have been detected on 34 the systems, the majority of detections are associated with a medical isotope production facility in Fleurus, Belgium (IRE).

Bug fixes / enhancements to Parallel tempering Markov chain Monte Carlo sampler (PTMCMCSampler) v3

Markov chain Monte Carlo sampler useful for a variety of problems for optimization, numerical integration, and generating draws from a probability distribution. They are often used in physical and mathematical problems, especially when it is difficult or impossible to use other approaches. This disclosure is for new bug fixes and enhancements to an existing open source library that is already in the public domain under the MIT license. https://github.com/jellis18/PTMCMCSampler

Next-Generation Video Ice Particle Sampler Field Campaign Report

The next-generation video ice particle sampler (ngVIPS) was operated on the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility’s tethered balloon system (TBS) during the IFFExO (Ice Fog Field Experiment at Oliktok Point) project in November, 2020. The purpose of the project was to study ice fog microphysics and the environmental conditions during ice fog to enable better predictions during low-visibility conditions. This project was conducted at the site of the third ARM Mobile Facility (AMF3) at Oliktok Point, Alaska. Among a suite of other instruments, the ngVIPS was operated to observe atmospheric ice particles.

A summary of air sampler filter performance data: Bladewerx Speclon 5(TM) and Millipore FMLW047 5um

Bladewerx™ LLC (Rio Rancho, NM) manufactures instrumentation, neutron shielding and activation foils for the radiation protection industry. Specializing in portable alpha/beta air monitors and sample counters, Bladewerx is the source of Speclon 5™ PTFE filter media that they recommend for high-resolution alpha spectroscopy. Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) utilizes Speclon™ filter material in CAM (Continuous Air Monitor) samplers for workplace air monitoring. Millipore FMLW (5μm) filters are also used at Los Alamos, and a comparison of the two filter types has been requested. For filter face air velocities from 0.066 m/s to 1.5 m/s, the aerosol collection efficiency (for 0.3 μm particle diameters) and the filter pressure drops were measured. The FWHM (full width half maximum) of alpha spectroscopy peaks was also determined, using naturally occurring radon progeny at an alpha energy of 6 MeV.

Performance and automatic calibration scheme of the waveform sampler in the ETROC2 ASIC chip

The waveform sampler in the CMS ETROC2 chip for LGAD gain aging monitoring is a 2.56-GS/s 12-bit 8x-Interleaved ADC that consists of a coarse SAR stage, and a fine stage. This architecture delivers high performance on a relatively modest 65 nm process, while requires finding up to 24 calibration constants through calibration. We developed an automatic calibration method using charge injection test data. After calibration, the baseline random error is reduced by a factor of 2.5–3 compared to the default calibration, and a 5% charge measurement precision is achieved in 15 fC charge injection tests.

Air sampler collects and protects minute particles

Air ejector impactor sampler collects and protects samples of particles greater than 0.1 micron in diameter. In operation, it causes impaction of particle-laden air onto several collection surfaces within a collection cylinder. When not operating, the collector cylinder is maintained in a retracted state within a protective envelope.

Soil mechanics surface sampler - Lunar surface test and results

After the success of Surveyor I in meeting the objectives of the engineering flight series, selection from among candidate experiments led to the inclusion of the Soil Mechanics Surface Sampler (SMSS) on the payload. Though originally planned for later Surveyors, the SMSS design was modified to fit the reduced telemetry and commanding capability of the earlier spacecraft. These modifications included removal of the strain-, acceleration-, and position-measuring systems originally planned, and incorporation of a means for measuring current drawn by the motors during operation. A description of the modified device, its performance on Surveyor III, and some conclusions regarding the lunar surface material drawn from the experiment are presented.

Vacuum probe sampler removes micron-sized particles from surfaces

Vacuum probe sampler removes micron-sized particles from sensitive surfaces, without damage to the surface. The probe has a critical orifice to ensure an optimum airflow rate that disturbs the boundary layer of air and raises bacteria from the surface into the probe with the moving air stream.
