Synthesis, structure, linear and nonlinear optical properties of noncentrosymmetric quaternary diamond-like semiconductors, Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 (CZGSe) and the novel Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7

In this work, two quaternary diamond-like semiconductors (DLSs) in the Cu-Zn-Ge-Se system, the known Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 (also referred to as CZGSe) and the new Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 , are compared in terms of their crystal structures, electronic structures and physicochemical properties. Both compounds were prepared by high-temperature, solid-state synthesis at 800 degrees C. Single crystal X-ray diffraction was used to determine the structure of Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 . The structures of both Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 and Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 can be considered as derivatives of cubic diamond. Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 , with a reduced symmetry due to the cation ordering pattern, adopts the Cu 4 NiSi 2 S 7 structure type, with space group C2. The corner-sharing tetrahedra in Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 are slightly distorted because the charge for some of the S 2 - anions is not compensated by the first-nearest-neighbor cations. Rietveld refinements using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data were used to assess the phase purity of the samples and confirm the bulk structural behavior. Diffuse reflectance UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy shows that Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 and Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 have direct optical bandgaps of 1.38 and 0.91 eV, respectively. Electronic structure calculations implementing density functional theory confirm the direct bandgap for Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 , with a calculated value of 0.62 eV. Both compounds are air stable, thermally stable up to relatively high temperatures, undergo phase transitions and have wide windows of optical clarity. The Kurtz-Perry powder technique was used to determine the second harmonic generation (SHG) responses using a commercial AgGaSe 2 standard. While Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 displays a weak SHG response, Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 exhibits a response that is greater than several benchmark materials, with a large SHG coefficient, χ (2) , of 43 ± 6 pm/V at λ = 2900 nm.

Tetragonal structure and uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in the arc-melted (Ce,Zr) 2 (Fe,M) 17 (M = Mo, W, Co) alloys

The tetragonal ThMn 12 -type structure is stabilized in (Ce 1-x Zr x ) 2 T 16 M (x = 0.2 – 0.3; T = Fe or Fe/Co, M = Mo or W) arc-melted alloys. Approximately 5 at% of Mo or W admixture is sufficient to transform the hexagonal Th 2 Ni 17 -type structure of (Ce 1-x Zr x ) 2 Fe 17 into the tetragonal ThMn 12 -type structure of nearly single-phase (Ce 1-x Zr x ) 2 Fe 16 M and/or (Ce 1-x Zr x ) 2 Fe 15 CoM bulk alloys. X-ray Rietveld refinements reveal that Zr and Mo (W) substitute different sites in the tetragonal crystal structure. Zirconium preferentially replaces Ce, whereas Mo (W) substitutes Fe. At room temperature, the tetragonal phases exhibit strong ferromagnetism and a uniaxial magneto-crystalline anisotropy with anisotropy fields of 15 – 17 kOe. These materials possess room-temperature saturation magnetizations of 95 – 105 emu/g and Curie temperature of 420 – 505 K. At some concentrations, concurrent Zr and Mo (W) site occupancy facilitates 1:12 structure formation in bulk alloys with minimal presence of non-magnetic element in the Fe sublattice, thus securing the highest known magnetic moment per Fe atom (∼ 1.37 µ B ) in this type of materials. The intrinsic magnetic characteristics, as well as the absence of critical rare earths (RE), make these compounds interesting for development as low-cost permanent magnets. In conclusion, small Co additions improve the Curie temperature, especially if combined with W.

Role of washing solvents in defining the magnetic performance of Sm 2 Fe 17 N 3 obtained by reduction diffusion

Calciothermic reduction-diffusion (RD) is one of the leading synthesis methods for Sm 2 Fe 17 N 3 (SmFeN), but sintering of such RD-derived powders is hampered by oxidation and CaO byproducts. Here, we systematically evaluate how post-synthesis washing solvents govern powder chemistry and magnetic performance. RD-synthesized SmFeN powder was washed with several aqueous and non-aqueous solvents using identical washing protocols. This was followed by an assessment of both the as-washed powder as well as after annealing at 425 °C. Phase content was quantified by synchrotron PXRD and Rietveld refinement and SEM/EDS. The oxygen content of the powders was determined via inert gas fusion and the magnetization by DC magnetometry. While all aqueous-based solutions were able to remove CaO, the non-aqueous solutions were only effective with extended washing times. Prior to annealing, the crystalline phases and magnetic properties of the as-washed powders were largely the same regardless of washing solvent. However, differences emerge after annealing, where water-based washing markedly lowers the coercivity (H c ~3.8-4.3 kOe). In contrast, non-aqueous NH 4 Cl-methanol washing protocols were more effective in preserving coercivity (H c ~4.9-5.9 kOe). We attribute this to lower oxygen content in the non-aqueous samples (~9,400 ppm v ~6,400 ppm, respectively) which in turn reduced the formation of α-Fe during annealing. These results highlight the importance of solvent choice in washing RD-synthesized SmFeN and demonstrate that non-aqueous protocols, which better limit oxidation, outperform aqueous solvents despite the need for longer washing times.

Comparative investigation of Ga- and In-CHA in the non-oxidative ethane dehydrogenation reaction

Ga- and In-exchanged chabazite (CHA) zeolites with same Si/Al and metal/Al ratios were prepared via the incipient wetness impregnation method, were characterized using N 2 adsorption, electron microscopy, temperature-programed reactions and were evaluated for the ethane dehydrogenation reaction using flow microreactors. Ga-CHA has higher reaction rates and a lower activation energy of 107 kJ/mol than In-CHA (E a = 175 kJ/mol). Rietveld refinement of the X-ray powder diffraction pattern shows that the In + cation is predominantly located above the 6-ring of the CHA cage. It is proposed that the reaction proceeds through the alkyl mechanism based on stability of alkyl hydride intermediates as determined using DFT calculations. The oxidative addition of ethane to the metal shows much lower Gibbs free energy for Ga-CHA (+27.95 kJ/mol) vs In-CHA (+124.85 kJ/mol). Finally, these results indicate that oxidative addition may be the rate-limiting step of ethane dehydrogenation in these materials.

The lattice parameter – composition relationship of the body centered cubic uranium-niobium alloys

In this paper, in-situ time-of-flight neutron diffraction experiments were performed on uranium-niobium alloy with 6 wt% Nb to study the lattice parameter-composition relationship for the body centered cubic (bcc) alloys. Based on lattice-parameter measurements of Nb-supersaturated γs phase over the range of 450 – 790 °C, an improved Vegard's-type relationship was established for determination of Nb concentrations at elevated temperatures. Neutron diffraction data were also collected as a function of aging time over the 450 - 600 °C range when γs phase decomposed isothermally into the mixture of orthorhombic α-U and Nb-rich bcc phase, as well as at room-temperature on the alloys aged ex-situ at 500 °C up to five years. From these measurements, the average Nb concentrations in the bcc phase were determined based on the Rietveld refinements of weight fraction and mass conservation relations (lever rule). Over the 15at% – 78at% range of Nb concentrations that correspond to different experimental aging times, the lattice parameters at constant temperatures exhibit a nonlinear S-shaped variation with Nb concentration, and the associated excess volumes of mixing can be described by a subregular solution model of the Redlich–Kister type of polynomial. Over the full range of composition the S-shaped deviation from Vegard's law can be modeled using a combination of an elastic continuum model and a perturbation to the radii of the solute atoms in the solvent, suggesting that electronic interactions between solute and solvent atoms could play an important role in the compositional dependence of lattice parameter for the γ-phase U-Nb alloys. While Vegard's law is a straightforward and reasonably good approximation for the bcc solid solutions in the U-Nb system, the Nb concentrations determined from the weight fraction refinements of diffraction data provide internally consistent, mass-conserving estimates of solute redistribution for the monotectoid reaction.

Optical vibrational spectra and proposed crystal structure of ε-UO 3

ε-UO 3 is an exotic polymorph in the uranium trioxide system with an undetermined crystal structure and limited optical vibrational spectroscopic data. To improve understanding of this compound, we synthesize and investigate the crystal structure and optical vibrational spectra of ε-UO 3 . Infrared spectra collected for ε-UO 3 are in good agreement with previously published results, and our studies extend the available data into the low-energy (600–100 cm –1 ) regime. For the first time, Raman spectra are presented for ε-UO 3 using both 785 and 532 nm excitation wavelengths. Previous reports suggest an impurity phase may be present in ε-UO 3 produced by calcination of U 3 O 8 ; however, spectral center-of-mass calculations, principal component analyses, and Raman spectroscopic mapping employed to investigate this possibility indicate that the product of U 3 O 8 calcined in O 3 (g) in this work is likely phase-pure. A possible novel structure solution for ε-UO 3 is determined via Rietveld refinement of powder X-ray diffraction data and is triclinic, P-1, with a = 4.01 Å, b = 3.85 Å, c = 4.18 Å, and α = 98.26°, β = 90.41°, γ = 120.46° (R wp = 8.30%). The asymmetric unit of ε-UO 3 consists of U(VI) in hexagonal bipyramidal coordination with displaced equatorial oxygen. Further analysis reveals that the structure of ε-UO3 is best described by a 2 × 1 × 2 supercell structure in P-1 with a = 8.03 Å, b = 3.86 Å, c = 8.37 Å with α = 98.26°, β = 90.41°, and γ = 120.46°, although a higher-symmetry structure is possible. Optical vibrational spectroscopic and structural measurements of ε-UO 3 presented here furthers our understanding of this complex uranium oxide and clarifies the origin of reported structural similarity to U 3 O 8 .

The effects of hydrogen absorption in U 3 Si 5 and its thermodynamic properties

The hydrogen absorption behavior of U 3 Si 5 was examined using a Sieverts apparatus. Experimental results revealed the formation of a hydride phase with a stoichiometry reaching U 3 Si 5 H 1.23 at pressures up to 250 kPa and temperatures below 300°C. Further, by employing Van 't Hoff analysis, the enthalpy and entropy of formation for the newly formed hydride phase were measured as -19.73 $kJ$ ∙ $mol$ -1 and -251.18 $J$ ∙ $mol$ -1 ∙ $T$ -1 , respectively. Rietveld refinement showcased an expansion in lattice parameters a and c, resulting in an overall increase in unit cell volume of up to 8%; volume expansion can induce structural failures within the material.

Statistical fracture behavior of doped UO 2 using a ball-on-ring equibiaxial flexure test method

Metal oxide dopants, such as titanium and chromium oxides, have garnered considerable attention for their potential to increase grain size (≥ 30 µm) in UO 2 fuel, purportedly enhancing fission gas retention during reactor operation. Fuel performance is significantly impacted by fuel fracture behavior, so it is important to understand the effects of enhanced grain size and dopant content on UO 2 fuel fracture. UO 2 pellets were doped with 0.1 wt% TiO 2 and 0.3 wt% Cr 2 O 3 to alter density and grain size. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy measured dopant levels pre- and post-sintering. X-ray diffraction revealed lattice changes and microstrain via Rietveld refinement. Field emission scanning electron microscopy determined grain sizes of approximately 30 µm for TiO 2 doping and 7 µm for Cr 2 O 3 doping. Transverse rupture strength tests were performed on over 30 samples per dataset to obtain characteristic strength and Weibull modulus. Results indicate no statistical difference in fracture strength between 0.1 wt% TiO 2 doped UO 2 and undoped UO 2 , while 0.3 wt% Cr 2 O 3 doped UO 2 exhibited a 20% decrease in fracture strength. Doped UO 2 samples also showed reduced Weibull modulus compared to undoped UO 2 , suggesting increased scatter in fracture strength. This study's findings suggest that titanium and chromium oxide doping in UO 2 , regardless of grain size, induce residual stresses, decreasing fracture strength and increasing variability in fracture behavior.

Synchrotron X-ray diffraction of pyrolusite (MnO 2 ) and rutile (TiO 2 ) during heating to ~1000 °C

To compare thermal expansion behaviors in isomorphic structures with different redox behaviors, we separately heated pyrolusite (Mn 4+ O 2 ) and rutile (Ti 4+ O 2 ) powders from 25 to ~1000 °C at a rate of 0.05 °C/s at ambient pressure and analyzed them using synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement. The pyrolusite exhibited two reduction-induced phase decompositions. Between 531 and 583 °C, pyrolusite decomposed to bixbyite (Mn 3+ 2 O 3 ), and between 972 and 998 °C, bixbyite decomposed to hausmannite (Mn 2+ Mn 3+ 2 O 4 ). The rutile experienced no phase decompositions or transitions over this same temperature interval. The refined bond lengths and angles for pyrolusite showed that the Mn 4+ coordination octahedron became more distorted near the phase decomposition to bixbyite due to the approach of two coordinating oxygen atoms. The 3d electrons of each Mn 4+ ion in pyrolusite make π bonds with the 2p electrons of the surrounding O 2- ions, whereas the Ti 4+ of rutile has no 3d electrons. Thus, π bonding between octahedral Mn 4+ and the surrounding O 2- anions increases the strength of the Mn–O bonds of pyrolusite relative to the Ti–O bonds of rutile. However, we observed a small decrease in O–O distances in pyrolusite before the decomposition, suggesting that at high temperature, increased π bonding between adjacent O anions precedes the release of O 2 and the reduction of Mn 4+ to Mn 3+ . Analogous behavior was observed for bixbyite before its reductive phase decomposition to hausmannite. In contrast, no anomalous changes in the O–O distances occurred for rutile. Our X-ray diffraction analyses provided accurate thermal expansion coefficients for these materials over a broader temperature range than reported in previous studies. The Mn–O bond lengths in pyrolusite were shorter and stronger than the Ti–O bonds of rutile; for example, at 60 °C, bond distances in pyrolusite refined to 1.8854(6) Å whereas the bond lengths of rutile were 1.9575(4) Å. Accordingly, the axial and volumetric thermal expansion coefficients refined for rutile were greater than those for pyrolusite. Further, the axial coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) for pyrolusite were 96% (a-axis) and 69% (c-axis) of the corresponding values for rutile, and the volumetric CTE for pyrolusite was 85% of that for rutile.

Unusual superparamagnetic behavior in bulk Ba 0.198 La 0.784 Ti 0.096 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ

Here, we report the observation of superparamgnetic behavior induced by the substitution La 3+ by Ba 2+ at A-sites and Fe +3 by Ti 4+ at B-sites. Ba 0.198 La 0.784 Ti 0.096 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ was synthesized via solid state reaction. The Rietveld refinements revealed an orthorhombic (Pbnm). The low-mag STEM results showed that the particles were found to exhibit square like shape and formed in single crystal with high degree of crystallinity. The particle size ranges of 50 300 nm. Element mapping demonstrates a complementary distribution between Ba and La, while homogenous distribution is found for Fe and O. The optical band gap determined from UV-vis analysis is equal to 1.93 eV which is smaller than the reported one for LaFeO 3 and BaTiO 3 . The hysteresis loops at 300 K and 10 K show superparamagnetic behavior, which deviate extremely from the antiferromagnetic nature of LaFeO 3 perovskite. The temperature dependent magnetization demonstrates that the material kept a net magnetization of 12.29 (emu/g) at very low temperature.

Neutron diffraction probing hydrogen in monoclinic H 2 VOPO 4

Light hydrogen atoms are resolvable with neutrons; however, the massive incoherent background inhibits the diffraction quality. To improve the signal, isotope treatment by deuteration becomes a prerequisite for a successful crystallographic understanding of hydrogen-containing materials by neutron diffraction. Thanks to the low-background and high-resolution time-of-flight neutron diffractometer, this work demonstrates a direct and successful measurement of high-quality neutron diffraction patterns of H 2 VOPO 4 powders, a precursor of a high-capacity alkali-ion battery cathode. The Rietveld refinement identifies the hydrogen coordinates, occupancy, and thermal parameters in the H 2 VOPO 4 lattice. Finally, the result highlights the unique capability of neutron diffraction for the structure characterization of hydrogen-containing materials, potentially without requiring costly and possibly artifact-inducing deuteration for neutron diffraction.

Structural, magnetic, optical, dielectric and electronic properties of R 2 NiIrO 6 (R = Pr and Nd): A comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigation

Double perovskites are highly promising materials capable of exhibiting a wide variety of phenomena. In this work, we perform a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of polycrystalline R 2 NiIrO 6 (R = Pr and Nd) compounds. Both compounds were synthesised using the solid-state reaction method. Rietveld refinement confirmed a monoclinic structure with the P2 1 /n space group for both compounds. The scanning electron images showed the average grain sizes of 0.55 μm for R = Pr and 0.46 μm for R = Nd. Fourier transform infrared ra- diation spectra of the two compounds presented two intense bands at 470 cm -1 and 540 cm -1 . The optical measurements revealed that the band gaps of the compounds were in the visible absorption range. The field- cooled magnetisation - field hysteresis measurements indicated exchange bias properties in the synthesised compounds at low temperatures. Both temperature and frequency variation of dielectric constant and loss tangent measurements were conducted. The frequency-dependent ac conductivity measurements indicated that the conductivity increases with the increase of frequency as well as temperature. The Nd 2 NiIrO 6 compound showed lower ac conductivities compared to its isostructural Pr 2 NiIrO 6 compound. The atomic and electronic structures of Nd 2 NiIrO 6 and Pr 2 NiIrO 6 were explored using the spin-polarised calculations performed within the DFT+U method. Our results suggested that the inclusion of on-site correlations and repulsions for the d-states of atoms was necessary in order to obtain finite band gaps of Nd 2 NiIrO 6 and Pr 2 NiIrO 6 systems.

Anion and cation co-doping of Na 4 SnS 4 as sodium superionic conductors

Na based all-solid-state batteries are one of the most promising candidates for large-scale electrochemical energy storage owing to their low cost and outstanding safety properties. The key enabler of this technology is solid electrolyte with sufficiently high ionic conductivity at room temperature. In this work, the design, synthesis, characterization and testing of a series of novel fast Na-ion conductors, Na 4-x-y Sn 1-x A x S 4-y X y with aliovalent cation (P 5+ /Sb 5+ ) and anion substitutions (Cl - /Br - ) of the parent compound Na 4 SnS 4 are reported. The doped samples crystalize in a new phase with space group I4 1 /acd and show ionic conductivities that are one to four orders of magnitude higher than that of undoped Na 4 SnS 4 . R. t. conductivity of 0.64 mS cm -1 is achieved in Na 3.7 Sn 0.8 Sb 0.2 S 3.9 Cl 0.1 with a low activation energy of 0.26 eV. Furthermore, Rietveld refinement against high resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data reveals that the distribution of the doping ions and the resulted Na vacancies are underlying cause of the enhanced conductivity.

Evaluation of the critical behavior near ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition in CrTe 1-x Se x alloys: An experimental study

For this study, we used the conventional solid-state reaction method to prepare stoichiometric samples of CrTe 1-x Se x , where 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.10, and investigated the structural and critical behavior of the prepared samples. Room temperature powder X-ray diffraction, along with Rietveld refinement, revealed the emergence of the NiAs structure with P6 3 /mmc (194) space group with increasing Se substitution. The high-temperature linear fit to inverse of the dc-susceptibility versus temperature for the mother sample resulted in an effective moment of 3.65μ B Cr with Curie-Weiss temperature near 335K, which is slightly higher than the Tc of ~332K obtained from the inflection point of magnetization versus temperature. Magnetization isotherms were employed to investigate the critical behavior of ferromagnetic CrTe 1-x Se x with 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.10 near their Curie temperatures (Tc). The magnetic behavior near Tc was found to follow 3D mean-field critical exponents with a second-order phase transition in all samples investigated. We fine-tuned the critical exponents (β, γ, and δ) using a combination of an iteration technique, the Kouvel-Fisher method, and modified Arrott plots. All samples follow a mean field behavior, with Tc ranging from 298 to 340K. The acquired values exhibit self-consistency, as indicated by the results from the Widom scaling relation. Furthermore, the magnetization isotherms exhibit a universal scaling behavior, providing additional credence to the calculated critical exponents.

Synthesis and characterization of Pt(Cu 0.67 Sn 0.33 )

Pt(Cu 0.67 Sn 0.33 ) has recently been found in a natural sample. In order to be able to characterize this new ternary compound, we synthesized it from the elements. Samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, thermal relaxation calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy studies. Density functional theory-based model calculations complemented the experimental studies. Pt(Cu 0.67 Sn 0.33 )was already formed at a relatively low temperature of 773 K. Rietveld refinement of Pt(Cu 0.67 Sn 0.33 ) has been carried out in CuAu-type or L1 0 -type structure, space group P4/mmm, with Pt on 0,0,0 and disordered Cu and Sn on 1/2, 1/2, 1/2 and Z = 1. The lattice parameters are a = 2.823(1) Å, c = 3.64(1) Å, and V = 29.00(4) Å which are in good agreement with values obtained earlier on the natural sample and with the results of DFT calculations. The vibrational entropy for Pt(Cu 0.67 Sn 0.33 ) is $S_{298.15}^{vib}$ = 79.9(7) J mol -1 K -1 . The pressure dependence up to 36(2) GPa of the unit-cell volume and the lattice parameters and unit-cell volume have been obtained by synchrotron based powder diffraction using a diamond anvil cell. A fit of a 3rd-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state to the Pt(Cu 0.67 Sn 0.33 )) (p,V)-data results in a bulk modulus of B 0 = 215(27) GPa and B' = 5(2).

Ambient pressure synthesis and characterization of layered honeycomb Li 2 PdO 3

Single-phase polycrystalline Li 2 PdO 3 has been synthesized at 640°C in oxygen for the first time under ambient pressure. X-ray and neutron diffraction analyses show that the sample possesses a monoclinic layered structure belonging to the C2/m space group. Rietveld refinements of neutron powder diffraction data indicate ~10% Li–Pd site exchange and DIFFaX modelling manifest ~2% stacking faults present within LiPd 2 layers. A band gap of ~2.23 eV was calculated for the golden Li 2 PdO 3 using absorbance measurements. Thermogravimetric analysis of the sample shows that Li 2 PdO 3 is stable up to 730°C under oxygen. Here a Curie tail is observed at low temperature magnetic measurements (T < 50K), yielding an effective moment of 0.038 μ B , possibly due to spin ½ impurities.

Type-II superconductivity at 9K in Pb–Bi alloy

In the present work, we report the synthesis of Pb–Bi alloy with enhanced Tc of up to 9K, which is higher than that of Pb. The alloy is synthesized via a solid-state reaction route in the vacuum-encapsulated quartz tube at 700°C in an automated furnace. The synthesized sample is characterized by X-ray Diffraction(XRD) and Energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDAX) for its phase purity and elemental composition. Rietveld refinement of XRD reveals that the end product is a majority hexagonal Pb 7 Bi 3 , with minor rhombohedral Bi. The electronic transport measurement shows metallic behavior with the Debye temperature of 108K and a superconductivity transition temperature (T c ) below 9K, which is the maximum to date for any reported Pb–Bi alloy, Pb or Bi at ambient pressure. Partial substitution of Bi at the Pb site may modify the free density of electronic states within the BCS model to attain the optimum T c , which is higher by around 2K from the reported T c of Pb. The superconductor phase diagram derived from magneto-transport measurements reveals that the synthesized alloy is a conventional superconductor with an upper critical field (H c2 ) of 3.9 T, which lies well within the Pauli paramagnetic limit. The magnetization measurements carried out following ZFC(Zero Field Cool) protocols infer that the synthesized alloy is a bulk superconductor below 9K. The isothermal M-H(Magnetization vs. Field) measurements performed below T c establish it as a type-II superconductor. Furthermore, the specific heat capacity measurements show that the Pb–Bi alloy is a strongly coupled bulk superconductor below around 9K with possibly two superconducting gaps.

Describing the Influence of Ball-milling on the Amorphization of Flubendazole Using the PDF and RMC Methods with X-ray Powder Diffraction Data

Flubendazole (FBZ) is a poorly water-soluble drug, and different methodologies have been proposed to improve its oral bioavailability. Obtaining the amorphous drug phase is an alternative to improve its water solubility. Several techniques for drug amorphization, such as spray drying, lyophilization, melt quenching, solvent-evaporation, and ball milling, can yield various types of structural disorder and possibly render variations in physicochemical properties. Herein, we focus on evaluating the influence of the ball-milling process on the amorphization of FBZ. The characterization of the average global and local structures before, during, and after the milling process is described by sequential Rietveld refinements, pair distribution function analysis, and the Reverse Monte Carlo method. In conclusion, we show that preserving the local structure (nearest molecules) can be responsible for avoiding the fast structure recrystallization commonly observed when using the solvent-evaporation process for the studied drug.
