Spaceborne Fiber Optic Data Bus (SFODB)

Spaceborne Fiber Optic Data Bus (SFODB) is an IEEE 1393 compliant, gigabit per second, fiber optic network specifically designed to support the real-time, on-board data handling requirements of remote sensing spacecraft. The network is fault tolerant highly reliable, and capable of withstanding the rigors of launch and the harsh space environment. SFODB achieves this operational and environmental performance while maintaining the small size, light weight, and low power necessary for spaceborne applications. On December 9, 1998, SFODB was successfully demonstrated at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC).

Agent Based Intelligence in a Tetrahedral Rover

A tetrahedron is a 4-node 6-strut pyramid structure which is being used by the NASA - Goddard Space Flight Center as the basic building block for a new approach to robotic motion. The struts are extendable; it is by the sequence of activities: strut-extension, changing the center of gravity and falling that the tetrahedron "moves". Currently, strut-extension is handled by human remote control. There is an effort underway to make the movement of the tetrahedron autonomous, driven by an attempt to achieve a goal. The approach being taken is to associate an intelligent agent with each node. Thus, the autonomous tetrahedron is realized as a constrained multi-agent system, where the constraints arise from the fact that between any two agents there is an extendible strut. The hypothesis of this work is that, by proper composition of such automated tetrahedra, robotic structures of various levels of complexity can be developed which will support more complex dynamic motions. This is the basis of the new approach to robotic motion which is under investigation. A Java-based simulator for the single tetrahedron, realized as a constrained multi-agent system, has been developed and evaluated. This paper reports on this project and presents a discussion of the structure and dynamics of the simulator.

Interactive analysis of magnetic field data

The development of an interactive graphics system for speeding up the identification and analysis of magnetic field data received from spacecraft is described. A flat file system was designed with a standard header file which contained space for user notes. The system featured a minicomputer with the capacity to handle up to 20 remote terminal requests simultaneously. Time series of vector field analyses were displayed and analyzed using the B-analysis (BANAL) program, while TANAL was devised to handle trajectory analyses. BANAL permits calculations of rotations, hodograms, and power spectra, and TANAL features time series, altitude profile, and vector trajectory plots. Subsequent programs for cross-correlations and filtering are indicated.

Simulator evaluation of a remotely piloted vehicle lateral landing task using a visual display

A simulator evaluation of a remotely piloted research vehicle was conducted at NASA Ames Research Center's Dryden Flight Research Facility to determine the utility of a visual display when studying the influence of changes in the lateral stick gearing gains during landing approaches. The test vehicle used in this study was a highly maneuverable aircraft technology (HiMAT) aircraft, which is a 0.44 scale version of an envisioned small, single seat fighter airplane. Handling qualities ratings and comments obtained from pilots using a simulated visual display of a runway scene and a simulated instrument landing system (ILS) display were compared with the results of actual flight tests. The visual display was found to provide an adequate representation of the test vehicle in a visual landing approach, and it improved the roll response cues provided to the pilot. The handling qualities ratings and comments for flight and simulation visual landing approaches correlated well. The ILS simulation results showed reduced correlation compared with the flight results for ILS approaches. Handling qualities criteria for remotely piloted research vehicles are also discussed in this paper.

Analysis of soil moisture extraction algorithm using data from aircraft experiments

A soil moisture extraction algorithm is developed using a statistical parameter inversion method. Data sets from two aircraft experiments are utilized for the test. Multifrequency microwave radiometric data surface temperature, and soil moisture information are contained in the data sets. The surface and near surface ( or = 5 cm) soil moisture content can be extracted with accuracy of approximately 5% to 6% for bare fields and fields with grass cover by using L, C, and X band radiometer data. This technique is used for handling large amounts of remote sensing data from space.

Gaussian maximum likelihood and contextual classification algorithms for multicrop classification

The paper reviews some of the ways in which context has been handled in the remote-sensing literature, and additional possibilities are introduced. The problem of computing exhaustive and normalized class-membership probabilities from the likelihoods provided by the Gaussian maximum likelihood classifier (to be used as initial probability estimates to start relaxation) is discussed. An efficient implementation of probabilistic relaxation is proposed, suiting the needs of actual remote-sensing applications. A modified fuzzy-relaxation algorithm using generalized operations between fuzzy sets is presented. Combined use of the two relaxation algorithms is proposed to exploit context in multispectral classification of remotely sensed data. Results on both one artificially created image and one MSS data set are reported.

Potential Pitfalls Related to Space-Based Lidar Remote Sensing of the Earth with an Emphasis on Wind Measurement

A collection of issues is discussed that are potential pitfalls, if handled incorrectly, for earth-orbiting lidar remote sensing instruments. These issues arise due to the long target ranges, high lidar-to-target relative velocities, low signal levels, use of laser scanners, and other unique aspects of using lasers in earth orbit. Consequences of misunderstanding these topics range from minor inconvenience to improper calibration to total failure. We will focus on wind measurement using coherent detection Doppler lidar, but many of the potential pitfalls apply also to noncoherent lidar wind measurement, and to measurement of parameters other than wind. Each area will be identified as to its applicability.
