Influence of Nb alloying on Nb recrystallization and the upper critical field of Nb 3 ⁢Sn

Nb 3 Sn conductors are important candidates for high-field magnets for particle accelerators, and they continue to be widely used for many laboratory and NMR magnets. However, the critical current density, J c , of present Nb 3 Sn conductors declines swiftly above 12-15 T. State-of-the-art Ta- and Ti-doped strands exhibit upper critical field, H c2 , values of ~ 24-26.5 T (4.2 K) and do not reach the FCC target J c , which serves as the present stretch target for Nb 3 Sn development. As recently demonstrated, to meet this goal requires enhanced vortex pinning but an independent and supplementary approach is to significantly enhance H c2 . In this study, we have arc-melted multiple Nb alloys with added Hf, Zr, Ta and Ti and drawn them successfully into monofilament wires to investigate the possibilities of H c2 enhancement through alloying. H c2 (T) was measured for all samples in fields up to 16 T and some up to 31 T. We have found that all alloys show good agreement with the standard Werthamer, Helfand, and Hohenberg (WHH) fitting procedure without the need to adjust the paramagnetic limitation parameter (α) and spin-orbit scattering parameter (λ so ). The evaluation of dH c2 /dT near T c , which is proportional to the electronic specific heat coefficient γ and the normal state resistivity ρn, allows a better understanding of the induced disorder introduced by alloying in the A15 phase. So far, we have observed that Hf alloying of pure Nb can enhance H c2 (0) by 3-4 T to ~28 T, while adding just 1 at. %Hf or Zr into a Nb4Ta base alloy can raise H c2 (0) to ~31 T. Very importantly we find that Hf and Zr raise the alloy recrystallization temperature above the usual A15 reaction temperature range of 650°C – 750°C, thus ensuring denser A15 phase nucleation in the Nb alloy grain boundaries, possibly leading to a more homogeneous A15 phase Sn content and refined A15 grain size. Furthermore, the potential for further advancements in Nb 3 Sn properties is explored in relation to the recrystallization of the Nb alloy and the factors controlling the upper critical field.

Unveiling the Interplay: Cold Work, Recrystallization, and Flux Expulsion in SRF Cavities

The fabrication of SRF cavities from sheet materials includes deep-drawing, electron beam welding, chemical and mechanical polishing, high-temperature heat treatment, and material diffusion. The performance of these cavities is frequently limited by magnetic flux trapping giving rise to additional rf loss. In this presentation, we thoroughly examine how recrystallization influences flux expulsion in SRF cavities, using cold-worked niobium sheets from various suppliers. Our findings reveal that cold-worked sheets enhance flux expulsion, especially at lower heat treatment temperatures, by promoting improved recrystallization. In particular, a traditionally fabricated Nb cavity half-cell from an annealed poly-crystalline Nb sheet after an 800 C heat treatment leads to a bi-modal microstructure that ties in with flux trapping and inefficient flux expulsion. This non-uniform microstructure is related to varying strain profiles along the cavity shape. A novel approach to prevent this non-uniform microstructure is presented by fabricating a 1.3 GHz single cell Nb cavities with a cold-worked sheet and subsequent heat treatment leading to better flux expulsion after 800 C/3h

Annealing effects in plated-wire memory elements. II - Recrystallization in Permalloy films.

Results of grain-size measurements in Permalloy platings suggest that recrystallization is possible at temperatures as low as 200 C, but that it is an extremely heterogeneous process. No worthwhile correlation was found to exist between observed grain size and magnetic dispersion in samples aged in the temperature range from 180 to 230 C. It is suggested that the magnetic aging which occurs under these conditions may be due to some other diffusion-controlled process than recrystallization; a process such as chemical homogenization is tentatively preferred.

Deformation, recrystallization, strength, and fracture of press-forged ceramic crystals.

Sapphire and ruby were very difficult to press-forge because they deformed without cracking only in a limited temperature range before they melted. Spinel crystals were somewhat easier and MgO, CaO, and TiC crystals much easier to forge. The degree of recrystallization that occurred during forging (which was related to the ease and type of slip intersections) varied from essentially zero in Al2O3 to complete (i.e., random polycrystalline bodies were produced) in CaO. Forging of bi- and polycrystalline bodies produced incoherent bodies as a result of grain-boundary sliding. Strengths of the forged crystals were comparable to those of dense polycrystalline bodies of similar grain size. However, forged and recrystallized CaO crystals were ductile at lower temperatures than dense hot-pressed CaO. This behavior is attributed to reduced grain-boundary impurities and porosity. Fracture origins could be located, indicating that fracture in the CaO occurs internally as a result of surface work hardening caused by machining.-

An electron microscopy examination of primary recrystallization in TD-nickel.

Primary recrystallization in TD-nickel 1 in. bar has previously been regarded as the process by which the initial fine grain structure is converted to a coarse grain size (increases in grain size by 500 times) under suitable deformation and annealing conditions. This process is dependent on deformation mode. While it occurs readily after rolling transverse to the bar axis and annealing (800 C), it is completely inhibited by longitudinal rolling and swaging deformations, even for very high (1320 C) annealing temperatures. A transmission electron microscopy examination of deformation and annealing substructures indicates that primary recrystallization in TD-nickel 1 in. bar actually occurs on the sub-light optical level, to produce a grain structure similar in size to the initial fine grained state.

Surface recrystallization theory of the wear of copper in liquid methane

Copper was subjected to sliding against 440C in liquid methane. The normal load range was from 1/4 to 2 kilograms, and the sliding velocity range was from 3.1 to 25 meters per second. Over this range of experimental parameters, the wear rate of the copper rider was found to be proportional to the sliding velocity squared and to the normal load. Transmission electron microscopy was used to study the dislocation structure in the copper very near the wear scar surface. It was found that near the wear scar surface, the microstructure was characterized by a fine-cell recrystallized zone in which individual dislocations could be distinguished in the cell walls. The interiors of the cells, about 0.5 micrometer in diameter, were nearly dislocation free. Below the recrystallized layer was a zone that was intensely cold worked by the friction process. With increasing depth, this intensely cold worked zone gradually became indistinguishable from the partially cold worked bulk of the copper, representative of the initial condition of the material.

The influence of gamma prime on the recrystallization of an oxide dispersion strengthened superalloy - MA 6000E

The requirement of large, recrystallized, highly elongated grains is of primary importance to the development of suitable high temperature properties in oxide dispersion strengthened-superalloys. In the present study the recrystallization behavior of MA 6000E, a recently developed Y2O3 strengthened superalloy produced by mechanical alloying, was examined using transmission and replication microscopy. Gradient and isothermal annealing treatments were applied to extruded and hot rolled products. It was found that conversion from a very fine (0.2 micron) grain structure to a coarse (approximately 10 mm) grain structure is controlled by the dissolution of the gamma prime phase, while grain shape was controlled primarily by the thermal gradient. The fine uniform oxide dispersion appeared to have only a secondary influence in determining the grain shape as columnar grains could be grown transverse to the working direction by appropriate application of the thermal gradient.

Structural Damage and Recrystallization Response of Garnet Crystals to Intense Electronic Excitation

Here, the susceptibility to irradiation-induced damage, the fundamental mechanism of the relaxation kinetics, and the corresponding recrystallization effect related to the cation radius ratio are comprehensively investigated for Y 3 Al 5 O 12 and Gd 3 Ga 5 O 12 garnet crystals under 645 MeV Xe 35+ irradiation with different fluences of 5 × 10 11 –3 × 10 12 ions cm –2 . Regarding different lattice distortion and swelling levels, the observed microstructure transformations to disordered and amorphous phases, and corresponding hillock dimensions, consistently confirm that Gd 3 Ga 5 O 12 has a higher susceptibility to radiation damage than Y 3 Al 5 O 12 . Combined with iTS model calculations, although Y 3 Al 5 O 12 has higher atomic temperature and energy deposition than Gd 3 Ga 5 O 12 under the same ion velocity and electronic energy loss, the relatively high thermal conductivity and specific heat coefficient of Y 3 Al 5 O 12 crystals enhance the conduction and dissipation of deposition energy, and Gd 3 Ga 5 O 12 , with a higher cation-radius-ratio (r A /r B ), is more easily damaged to amorphous phase due to the less favorable kinetics of ordering and recovery of a melted track region to the crystalline phase. Additionally, the significant bandgap modification in spectral ranges of 5.88–6.75 eV for Y 3 Al 5 O 12 and 4.83–5.41 eV for Gd 3 Ga 5 O 12 , and the enhancement of defect-assisted-related luminescence are achieved, providing a basis to design novel optoelectronic devices in microelectronics fields.

Assessment of metadynamic recrystallization in single copper particle impacts by focused ion beam tomography

We study single Cu-on-Cu impacts relevant to cold spray deposition and quantitatively analyze the metadynamic recrystallization (mDRX) that takes place after the impact by virtue of lingering impact adiabatic heat. Unlike prior studies, the current full 3D tomographic analysis of the mDRX volume shows that mDRX is extremely common in such impacts, although it is often missed when examining 2D sections. We also report an unexpected trend: there is a “sour spot” for mDRX at velocities about 20–40 % above the velocity for particle adhesion. This non-monotonic trend is contrary to the expectations based on increasing adiabatic heating with velocity. With a schematic model, we show that the trend can be explained on the basis of heat transfer: cooling of the heat-affected region is limited by transport through the bonded regions at the particle-substrate interface. Thus, bonding has a prominent role in the heat dissipation process and the best bonded particles most rapidly bulk quench, avoiding mDRX. Here, the developed semi-empirical model aligns with the experimental findings and may help inform microstructural evolution during cold spray and post-spray processing.

Modeling discontinuous dynamic recrystallization containing second phase particles in magnesium alloys utilizing phase field method

Pre-existing second phase particles can induce particle stimulated nucleation (PSN) and pinning effect on grain boundaries during DRX process of magnesium alloys. The interaction among pinning effect, PSN mechanism and strain-induced grain boundary migration (SIBM) nucleation mechanism imposes challenge in quantitative study of microstructure evolution. A phase field model that describes discontinuous dynamic recrystallization process considering second phase particles (PF-DDRX-SP) which mainly distribute along grain boundaries is developed. The second phase order parameter with diffusion interface is introduced to the free energy function. With considering the pinning effect of second phase particles on grain boundaries, the grain boundary energy couples the interaction between second phase and grains. The effect of second phase on dislocation density evolution is considered in the model, and the PSN and SIBM mechanism are both executed by limiting the nucleation position to the grain boundary and the second phase interface. For the validation, the initial topology consistent with initial microstructure is applied to the simulation of DRX kinetics and flow behavior of AZ80 magnesium alloy, and great reliability and accuracy of developed model is indicated. Furthermore, through the model, the microstructure evolution with different particle size and with different volume fraction of round particle during DRX process were simulated. Finally, the results show that particles with higher dispersion reduce the number of DRX nuclei, which indicate that second phase particles suppress the nucleation at grain boundaries because of the pinning effect. More importantly, the proposed model could also quantitatively predict the relationships between the parameters of second phase particles and DRX behaviors, and enable to optimize the initial second phase structure in a uniform grain structure during thermomechanical process.

Heterogenous activation of dynamic recrystallization and twinning during friction stir processing of a Cu-4Nb alloy

An interplay between high degree of shear deformation and deformation-induced heating occurs during friction stir processing (FSP) of metals. In medium-to-low stacking fault energy Cu alloys, this can lead to a complex spatially heterogenous activation of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) and twinning mechanisms. Within the Cu-Nb system, the presence of Nb is further expected to influence the DRX mechanism of the Cu matrix. However, the microstructural changes induced by the co-deformation of Nb during FSP are still not well understood. So, this study uses a combination of multimodal microstructural characterization, solution thermodynamics-based predictions, and computational crystal plasticity simulation to reveal the various microstructural evolution mechanisms that can occur during FSP of a Cu-4at.%Nb binary model alloy. The formation of softer DRX zones, and harder shear localization regions are revealed using electron backscatter diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, atom probe tomography, and crystal plasticity modeling.

The influence of kinematics of deformation on polycrystalline halite dynamic recrystallization: Full-field simulation of simple shear versus pure shear

Rock salt, composed mainly of halite, flows viscoplastically over a wide range of geological conditions, strongly impacting the dynamic evolution of sedimentary basins and orogens. Understanding how dislocation creep, which involves dislocation glide, intracrystalline recovery and dynamic recrystallization, influences the microstructure and rheology of halite under various deformation kinematics and temperatures is crucial for enhancing knowledge of salt flow dynamics. Here, this study employs a full-field numerical simulation method to compare the viscoplastic deformation of polycrystalline halite under simple shear and pure shear conditions up to a natural strain of ε = 1.5 at temperatures ranging from 100 °C to 300 °C. The results are presented in terms of crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO), grain shape preferred orientation (SPO), subgrain boundary direction, grain size and strain rate distribution. The results indicate that the crystallographic anisotropy of individual halite crystals is transferred to the polycrystalline scale, resulting in strain localization, particularly in simple shear simulations. The kinematics of deformation affect the evolution and distribution of high strain-rate bands, determining the direction of intragranular substructures and the morphology of strain-induced grain boundaries, with minimal impact on grain size. The intensity of grain boundary migration increases with temperature, significantly influencing grain morphology and size, thereby obscuring strain localization, while having little effect on CPOs. At low strain (ε < 1.0), CPOs relative to both the maximum shortening direction and the grain SPO are similar regardless of the deformation kinematics. At high strain (ε > 1.0), simple shear CPOs exhibit three stronger {100} maxima with a monoclinic symmetry relative to the grain SPO compared to the six {100} maxima with an orthotropic symmetry relative to the grain SPO generated under pure shear. Therefore, microstructures and CPOs can serve as indicators of the strain path in polycrystalline halite under various conditions, aiding in determining the shear sense and elucidating the deformation kinematics of salt structures.

Microstructure and CPO evolution of dynamically recrystallized olivine during complex deformation conditions: a full-field numerical modeling approach

The rheological properties of mantle rocks are strongly dependent on their crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO). Olivine CPO, defined by the orientation of seismically fast [100] axes parallel to flow direction, is also thought to be a dominant contributor to seismic anisotropy in the Earth's upper mantle. However, the amount of deformation needed to overprint a new CPO on a pre-existing fabric and the impact of the inherited CPOs on the transient microstructure evolution, remain unknown. This study employs a full-field numerical approach (VPFFT-ELLE) to explore the dynamic recrystallization and microstructural evolution of olivine polycrystalline aggregates under complex deformation conditions. We test four combinations of successive pure shear and simple shear boundary conditions. Findings indicate that inherited CPOs influence subsequent deformation in a manner dependent on the kinematic relationship between successive stages. In all cases, a minor strain increment (ε ∼0.3–0.6) is sufficient to erase the previous microstructure and CPO. However, when deformation conditions change dramatically (e.g., stretching direction changes orthogonally), the intensity of the new CPO developed is significantly lower and strain distribution are specially altered. During a transient strain stage, pre-existing microstructures undergo extensive reworking, especially when deformation conditions are changed dramatically, such as switching from simple shear to a pure shear condition with a parallel shortening direction relative to the stretching direction. We estimate the significance of these results in interpreting observations of seismic velocity anisotropy, concluding that P-wave seismic anisotropy is significantly and positively correlated with the evolution of olivine CPO with deformation history. This research underscores the transient nature of microstructural rearrangement in olivine aggregates and the necessity for caution in interpreting seismic anisotropy in regions with complex deformation histories, as inherited CPOs can influence current fabric development and induce deviation to the present deformation conditions.

Solid state welding of medium-entropy CrCoNi with heterogeneous, partially recrystallized microstructures

We report that heterogeneous, partially recrystallized (PRX) microstructures have recently been used to improve strength-ductility combinations in high-entropy alloys. However, these microstructures are incompatible with conventional joining processes that require melting or prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures. This work presents an initial exploration of solid state joining in this challenging condition using vaporizing foil actuator welding (VFAW) applied to PRX equiatomic alloy CrCoNi.

Studying the Recrystallization of Cu(InGa)Se 2 Semiconductor Thin Films by Silver Bromide In-situ Treatment

Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 samples were fabricated using a 3-stage thermal co-evaporation process on molybdenum back contact at low temperature. The process of recrystallization was carried out in between the 2 nd and 3 rd stages by flashing 25 mg of AgBr for 2 minutes. A change in morphological structure was observed as small grains transformed into large grains, as confirmed by XRD and SEM measurements. The decrease of the Ga gradient, seen in the SIMS depth profile, suggests Ga interdiffusion due to AgBr treatment. Altogether, the AgBr treatment contributes to a general improvement in device performance as compared to the as-deposited devices.

Towards Thermomechanical Processing of Alloy 709: Progress in Defining High-Temperature Deformation-Recrystallization "Space"

The Advanced Reactor Technologies (ART) Program has established a multi-year plan to develop Alloy 709 advanced stainless steel, generate the data package and develop material-specific design parameters in qualifying it as a new structural material for Class A construction in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section III, Division 5, High Temperature Reactors (ASME 2025). In collaboration with material vendors, the Advanced Materials Development activities under ART have successfully scaled the Alloy 709 plate form production from a laboratory heat of 500 pounds to commercial heats totaling 133,000 pounds of Alloy 709 plate fabricated from three heats. The goal of the overall Alloy 709 development program is to establish the necessary microstructural and mechanical properties relationship for Alloy 709 to ultimately develop fabrication parameters for other product forms such as bars, pipes, and forgings using the available ART Alloy 709 materials. This study will enable its deployment in the industry as an advanced construction material for high-temperature components. The objective of this Alloy 709 development work in FY 2025 is to experimentally determine the high-temperature deformation-recrystallization response of the Alloy 709 heats and to experimentally generate true stress-true strain data for Alloy 709 using the available commercial heat plate materials. Integral to this work is the previous characterization of the as-rolled materials and the determination of an effective solution-annealing process, which was reported in Y. Wang et al., 2023, and the evaluation of the effect of controlled cooling on the resultant precipitation in these commercial heats. This report summarizes and builds on the results of the previous reports to assess the high-temperature deformation behavior as a function of deformation temperature, strain and strain rate using commercial Alloy 709 heat 58776-3RB fabricated by G. O. Carlson and heat 529900-02 fabricated by Allegheny Technologies Incorporated (ATI) Specialty Rolled Products.

In Situ Recrystallization of Co-Evaporated Cu(In,Ga)Se2 Thin Films by Copper Chloride Vapor Treatment towards Solar Cell Applications

Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (or CIGS) thin films and devices were fabricated using a modified three-stage process. Using high deposition rates and a low temperature during the process, a copper chloride vapor treatment was introduced in between the second and third stages to enhance the films properties. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy demonstrate that drastic changes occur after this recrystallization process, yielding films with much larger grains. Secondary ion mass spectrometry shows that the depth profile of many elements is not modified (such as Cu, In and Se) while others change dramatically (such as Ga and Na). Because of the competing effects of these changes, not all parameters of the solar cells are enhanced, yielding an increase of 15% in the device efficiency at the most.
