The N2O was photolyzed at 2139 A to produce O(1 D) atoms in the presence of H2O and CO. The O(1 D) atoms react with H2O to produce HO radicals, as measured by CO2 production from the reaction of OH with CO. The relative rate constant for O(1 D) removal by H2O compared to that by N2O is 2.1. In the presence of C3H6, the OH can be removed by reaction with either CO or C3H6.
A steady-state flow apparatus, shown earlier to be suitable for the study of rapid gas reactions, has been used to determine the pressure dependence of the relative quasi-bimolecular rate constants for the reactant pairs ammonia (AM)-trimethylamine (TMA) and dimethylamine (DMA)-trimethylamine in reaction with boron trifluoride. The pressure dependence of the former was determined in the range 0.03-75 torr and that of the latter in the range 0.02-720 torr.
The effectiveness of powdered semiconductor materials in photocatalyzing candidate redox reactions was investigated. The rate of the photocatalyzed oxidation of cyanide at platinized TiO2 was studied. The extent of the cyanide reaction was followed directly using an electroanalytical method (i.e. differential pulse polarography). Experiments were performed in natural or artificial light. A comparison was made of kinetic data obtained for photocatalysis at platinized powders with rate data for nonplatinized powders.
The use of silane (SiH4) as an effective ignitor and flame stabilizing pilot fuel is well documented. A reliable chemical kinetic mechanism for prediction of its behavior at the conditions encountered in the combustor of a SCRAMJET engine was calculated. The effects of hydrogen addition on hydrocarbon ignition and flame stabilization as a means for reduction of lengthy ignition delays and reaction times were studied. The ranges of applicability of chemical kinetic models of hydrogen-air combustors were also investigated. The CHARNAL computer code was applied to the turbulent reaction rate modeling.
Accurate three-dimensional quantum mechanical reaction probabilities are presented for the reaction F + H2 yields HF + H on the new global potential energy surface 5SEC for total angular momentum J = 0 over a range of translational energies from 0.15 to 4.6 kcal/mol. It is found that the v-prime = 3 HF vibrational product state has a threshold as low as for v-prime = 2.

The reaction of NaBEt 4 with Cp*Rh(PMe 3 )PhBr produces Cp*Rh(PMe 3 )PhEt by ethyl transfer. Single crystal X-ray analysis shows a typical piano-stool geometry. This compound reacts photochemically (λ > 320 nm) to give Cp*Rh(PMe 3 )PhH as the major product, plus ethylene. A secondary product was assigned as the square planar complex RhPh(PMe 3 )(η 4 -C 5 Me 5 Et) on the basis of NMR spectroscopy. Finally, the molecule decomposes over several days at ambient temperature, releasing C 5 Me 5 Et.

Interesting similarities have been shown between the reactions of sym-trinitrobenzene with cycloalkanones, and with phloroglucinol. Previously unsuspected common intermediates have been shown to intervene. The structurally similar products in each case are tricyclic nitropropene nitronates. Protonation of these yields the corresponding nitronic acids in certain instances.
