Shortened processing time technique for color industrial radiography

Improved processing method reduces time required to generate a color radiograph. Prior to, or after exposure to penetrating radiation, the emulsion side of the film is flashed to a colored light which produces the hue changes in the processed radiograph. Agitation of the film during processing assures uniformity of results.

Interpretation of aluminum-alloy weld radiography

Report proposes radiographic terminology standardization which allows scientific interpretation of radiographic films to replace dependence on individual judgement and experience. Report includes over 50 photographic pages where radiographs of aluminum welds with defects are compared with prepared weld sections photomacrographs.

The measurement of capsule heat transfer gaps using neutron radiography.

The use of neutron radiographs to determine dimensional changes of heat transfer gaps in cylindrical nuclear fueled capsules is described. A method was developed which involves scanning a very fine grained neutron radiograph negative with a recording microdensitometer. The output of the densitometer is recorded on graph paper and the heat transfer gap is plotted as a well-defined optical density change. Calibration of the recording microdensitometer ratio arms permits measurements to be made of the heat transfer optical density change from the microdensitometer trace. Total heat transfer gaps, measured by this method, agree with the physical measurements within plus or minus 0.005 cm over a range of gaps from 0.061 to 0.178 cm.

Measurement of capsule heat transfer gaps using neutron radiography

A technique is described for measuring heat transfer gaps from neutron radiographs. The method involves scanning the radiograph negative with a recording microdensitometer to obtain a trace of the optical density variation across the diameter of the capsule. The optical density change representing the gap is measured from the microdensitometer trace and related to the physical measurement. Heat transfer gaps from 0.061 to 0.178 cm have been determined by this technique and agree with preassembly physical measurements to plus or minus 0.005 cm.

Development and investigation of single-scan TV radiography for the acquisition of dynamic physiologic data

A light amplifier for large flat screen fluoroscopy was investigated which will decrease both its size and weight. The work on organ contouring was extended to yield volumes. This is a simple extension since the fluoroscopic image contains density (gray scale) information which can be translated as tissue thickness, integrated, yielding accurate volume data in an on-line situation. A number of devices were developed for analog image processing of video signals, operating on-line in real time, and with simple selection mechanisms. The results show that this approach is feasible and produces are improvement in image quality which should make diagnostic error significantly lower. These are all low cost devices, small and light in weight, thereby making them usable in a space environment, on the Ames centrifuge, and in a typical clinical situation.

Autoradiographic image intensification - Applications in medical radiography

The image of an 80 to 90 percent underexposed medical radiograph can be increased to readable density and contrast by autoradiographic image intensification. The technique consists of combining the image silver of the radiograph with a radioactive compound, thiourea labeled with sulfur-35, and then making an autoradiograph from the activated negative.

X-radiography of slices of the Allende Meteorite

A 2.2 kg fragment of the Allende Meteorite was derinded and sliced by bandsawing. Several X-radiographs were made of all slices. The following features are resolved: grains of blocky troilite (bright spots), troilite rimmed chondrules (bright halos), chondrules with central vugs (dim halos), white aggregates (dark patches), and dark inclusions (medium dark patches). The number of FeS grains larger than about 0.5 mm is one per 6 + or - 1 gram of this fragment. Their concentration appears to be uniform at the 1 kg weight level, but is not uniform at the 100 g level. The number of FeS rimmed chondrules is one per 10 g. Their concentration is also nonuniform at the 100 g weight level. The number of white aggregates is roughly one per 20 g. These disc shaped objects show a distinct preferred orientation of the axis orthogonal to the plane of the disc. Chondrules with central vugs are numerous. Linear and curved arrays of chondrules, up to a few cm long, were observed. An interpretation of the observed features is given.

Dual-Energy X-Radiography With Gadolinium Filter

Image resolution increased, and cost reduced. Proposed dual-energy x-ray imaging system, continuous bremsstrahlung spectrum from x-ray tube filtered by foil of nonradioactive gadolinium or another rare-earth metal to form two-peaked energy spectrum. After passing through patient or object under examination, filtered radiation detected by array of energy-discriminating, photon-counting detectors. Detector outputs processed to form x-ray image for each peak and possibly enhanced image based on data taken at both peaks.

Improved Radiography Of Wooden Parts

Technique developed to increase radiographic contrasts of inherent latent defects in wood. Involves introduction of radiopaque substance into defect site and subjecting site to penetrating radiation. Radiopaque penetrant used is commercially available fluorocarbon cleaning solvent, trichlorotrifluoroethane. Applicable in inspection of wooden aircraft components, fan and wind-turbine blades, marine parts, insulators, and other wooden components, assemblies, and structures.

Comparison of melt-solid interface position by radiography and temperature measurement in a vertical Bridgman furnace

The melt-solid interface position was measured during the Bridgman growth of germanium by both temperature profiling and by X-ray imaging. The temperature field of the ampoule, growth material and measurement thermocouples was analyzed by means of numerical analysis. It is shown that both the temperature shift and the discontinuity in temperature gradient is a function of the imposed thermal field and the thermal properties of the thermocouples.

In Situ Radiography During Tensile Tests

Laboratory system for testing specimens of metal-, ceramic-, and intermetallic-matrix composite materials incorporates both electromechanical tensile-testing subsystem and either of two imaging subsystems that take x-ray photographs of specimens before, during, and after tensile tests. Used to test specimens of reaction-bonded silicon nitride reinforced with silicon carbide fibers (SiC/RBSN) considered for high-temperature service in advanced aircraft turbine engines. Provides data on effects of preexisting flaws (e.g., high-density impurities and local variations of density) on fracture behavior. Accumulated internal damage monitored during loading. X-ray source illuminates specimen in load frame while specimen is pulled. X-ray images on film correlated with stress-vs.-strain data from tensile test.

Enhancement and Analysis of Real-Time Radiography Images

Shuttle Redesigned Solid Rocket Motor (RSRM) nozzle interiors fabricated from carbon phenolic composite exhibit "ply lift" when hot fired. The composite surface is smooth when fabricated, but the individual plies separate and lift away from the surface when exposed to high temperature and high-pressure exhaust gas. It shows a cross section of a post-fired composite in which ply lift is evident as dark fissures. Surface charring is also visible as a darker band about 0.2 inches thick. Charring is normal, but ply lift is not desirable since the fissures could possibly initiate an abnormal exhaust path from the RSRM. The underlying mechanisms of ply lift are under investigation as part of the Shuttle Return-To-Flight Program.

Radiography by selective detection of scatter field velocity components

A reconfigurable collimated radiation detector, system and related method includes at least one collimated radiation detector. The detector has an adjustable collimator assembly including at least one feature, such as a fin, optically coupled thereto. Adjustments to the adjustable collimator selects particular directions of travel of scattered radiation emitted from an irradiated object which reach the detector. The collimated detector is preferably a collimated detector array, where the collimators are independently adjustable. The independent motion capability provides the capability to focus the image by selection of the desired scatter field components. When an array of reconfigurable collimated detectors is provided, separate image data can be obtained from each of the detectors and the respective images cross-correlated and combined to form an enhanced image.
