Close Proximity to a Quantum Phase Transition in TmZn2⁢GaO5

TmZn2⁢GaO5 is a newly synthesized triangular lattice magnet that exhibits a unique quantum phase characterized by strong Ising anisotropy, a pseudodoublet crystal electric field ground state, and a low-energy gapped excitation at the 𝐾 point. Unlike its well-known counterparts, TmMgGa⁢O4 and YbMgGa⁢O4, this material crystallizes in a distinct hexagonal structure, leading to a platform for investigating frustrated magnetism. Magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements confirm the absence of long-range magnetic order down to 50 mK, placing TmZn2⁢GaO5 in a distinct region of the transverse-field Ising model phase diagram. Theoretical calculations based on spin-wave theory and mean-field modeling reproduce key experimental observations, reinforcing the material’s placement in a quantum disordered or multipolar state near a quantum critical point that separates it from the low-energy phase of TmMgGa⁢O4. These results highlight its potential for exploring quantum disordered states, anisotropic excitations, and exotic quantum phases in frustrated spin systems.

Antiferromagnetic character of the quantum phase transition in the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice

In this work we provide a unified, comprehensive treatment of all operators that contribute to the antiferromagnetic, ferromagnetic, and charge-density-wave structure factors and order parameters of the hexagonal Hubbard Model. We use the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm to perform a systematic, carefully controlled analysis in the temporal Trotter error and of the thermodynamic limit. We expect our findings to improve the consistency of Monte Carlo determinations of critical exponents. We perform a data collapse analysis and determine the critical exponent β = 0.898 (37) for the semimetal-Mott insulator transition in the hexagonal Hubbard Model. Our methods are applicable to a wide range of lattice theories of strongly correlated electrons.

Accurate localization of Kosterlitz-Thouless-type quantum phase transitions for one-dimensional spinless fermions

We investigate the charge-density wave (CDW) transition for one-dimensional spinless fermions at half band filling with nearest-neighbor electron transfer amplitude t and interaction V. The model is equivalent to the anisotropic XXZ Heisenberg model for which the Bethe Ansatz provides an exact solution. For V>V c =2t, the CDW order parameter and the single-particle gap are finite but exponentially small, as is characteristic for a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. It is notoriously difficult to locate such infinite-order phase transitions in the phase diagram using approximate analytical and numerical approaches. Second-order Hartree-Fock theory is qualitatively applicable for all interaction strengths, and predicts the CDW transition to occur at V$^{(2)}_{c,2}$≈1.5t. Second-order Hartree Fock theory is almost variational because the density of quasiparticle excitations is small. We apply the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) for periodic boundary conditions for system sizes up to 514 sites, which permits a reliable extrapolation of all physical quantities to the thermodynamic limit, apart from the critical region. We investigate the ground-state energy, the gap, the order parameter, the momentum distribution, the quasiparticle density, and the density-density correlation function to locate V c from the DMRG data. In conclusion, tracing the breakdown of the Luttinger liquid and the peak in the quasiparticle density at the band edge permits us to reproduce V c with an accuracy of one percent.

Chiral spin liquid and quantum phase transition in the triangular-lattice Hofstadter-Hubbard model

Recent advances in moiré engineering motivate the study of lattice models of strongly correlated electrons subjected to substantial orbital magnetic flux. We analyze the triangular-lattice Hofstadter-Hubbard model at one-quarter flux quantum per plaquette and a density of one electron per site, where a chiral spin liquid phase may exist between weak-coupling integer quantum Hall and strong-coupling 120° antiferromagnetic phases. Here, we use matrix product state methods and analytical arguments to investigate this model compactified to cylinders of finite circumference. We uncover a glide particle-hole symmetry operation which, we argue, is spontaneously broken at the quantum Hall to spin liquid transition on odd-circumference cylinders. We numerically verify the spontaneous symmetry breaking and further demonstrate that this transition is associated with algebraic long-range correlations of various spin-singlet, charge-neutral operators. For even-circumference cylinders, the transition becomes a crossover associated with a large correlation length that grows substantially with circumference. Our findings suggest that in the two-dimensional limit, the transition to a chiral spin liquid phase is continuous and features critical fluctuations of the current.

Helical Edge States and Quantum Phase Transitions in Tetralayer Graphene

Helical conductors with spin-momentum locking are promising platforms for Majorana fermions. Here we report observation of two topologically distinct phases supporting helical edge states in charge neutral Bernal-stacked tetralayer graphene in Hall bar and Corbino geometries. As the magnetic field B ⊥ and out-of-plane displacement field D are varied, we observe a phase diagram consisting of an insulating phase and two metallic phases, with 0, 1, and 2 helical edge states, respectively. These phases are accounted for by a theoretical model that relates their conductance to spin-polarization plateaus. Transitions between them arise from a competition among interlayer hopping, electrostatic and exchange interaction energies. Finally, our work highlights the complex competing symmetries and the rich quantum phases in few-layer graphene.

Pressure-induced concomitant topological and metal-insulator quantum phase transitions in Ce3Pd3Bi4

Abstract The electronic property and magnetic susceptibility of Ce 3 Pd 3 Bi 4 were systemically investigated from 18 to 290 K for varying values of cell volume using dynamic mean-field theory coupled with density functional theory. By extrapolating to zero temperature, the ground state of Ce 3 Pd 3 Bi 4 at ambient pressure is found to be a correlated semimetal due to insufficient hybridization. Upon applying pressure, the hybridization strength increases and a crossover to the Kondo insulator is observed at finite temperatures. The characteristic temperature signaling the formation of Kondo singlet, as well as the characteristic temperature associated with f -electron delocalization–localization change, simultaneously vanishes around a critical volume of 0.992 V 0 , suggesting that such metal–insulator transition is possibly associated with a quantum critical point. Finally, Wilson’s loop calculations indicate that the Kondo insulating side is topologically trivial, thus a topological transition also occurs across the quantum critical point.

Hund’s coupling mediated multi-channel quantum phase transition of a single magnetic impurity in Fe(Se, Te)

Understanding the interplay between individual magnetic impurities and superconductivity is crucial for bottom-up construction of novel phases of matter. Sub-gap bound states that are used in this endeavor are typically considered as independent entities that each result from the exchange scattering between the respective impurity orbitals and electrons of the superconducting condensate. Here we present experimental evidence of individual multi-spin impurities where the sub-gap states are not independent. Specifically, we find that by tuning the energy of the state closest to zero through zero, all other sub-gap states change particle-hole asymmetry as well. We show that this can be understood by including Hund’s coupling, which favors high-spin configurations, into a multi-orbital Anderson model. Unlike for the case of independent spins, the transition we observe signals the simultaneous departure of more than one quasiparticle from the impurity, while the parity of the ground state may remain unchanged. Our results show that Hund’s coupling is not only crucial in generating high-spin impurities, but also to understand the transition between two distinct ground states, and should therefore be taken into account for e.g. impurity-based band-structure engineering.

Strain-Induced Quantum Phase Transitions in Magic-Angle Graphene

In this work, we investigate the effect of uniaxial heterostrain on the interacting phase diagram of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene. Using both self-consistent Hartree-Fock and density-matrix renormalization group calculations, we find that small strain values (ε~0.1%-0.2%) drive a zero-temperature phase transition between the symmetry-broken "Kramers intervalley-coherent" insulator and a nematic semimetal. The critical strain lies within the range of experimentally observed strain values, and we therefore predict that strain is at least partly responsible for the sample-dependent experimental observations.

Quantum Criticality in the 2D Quasiperiodic Potts Model

Quantum critical points in quasiperiodic magnets can realize new universality classes, with critical properties distinct from those of clean or disordered systems. Here, we study quantum phase transitions separating ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases in the quasiperiodic q-state Potts model in 2+1D. Using a controlled real-space renormalization group approach, we find that the critical behavior is largely independent of q, and is controlled by an infinite-quasiperiodicity fixed point. In conclusion, the correlation length exponent is found to be ν = 1, saturating a modified version of the Harris-Luck criterion.

Half-Integer Quantized Topological Response in Quasiperiodically Driven Quantum Systems

A spin strongly driven by two harmonic incommensurate drives can pump energy from one drive to the other at a quantized average rate, in close analogy with the quantum Hall effect. The pumping rate is a nonzero integer in the topological regime, while the trivial regime does not pump. The dynamical transition between the regimes is sharp in the zero-frequency limit and is characterized by a Dirac point in a synthetic band structure. We show that the pumping rate is half-integer quantized at the transition and present universal Kibble-Zurek scaling functions for energy transfer processes. Finally, our results adapt ideas from quantum phase transitions, quantum information, and topological band theory to nonequilibrium dynamics, and identify qubit experiments to observe the universal linear and nonlinear response of a Dirac point in synthetic dimensions.

Zero Magnetic Field Plateau Phase Transition in Higher Chern Number Quantum Anomalous Hall Insulators

The plateau-to-plateau transition in quantum Hall effect under high magnetic fields is a celebrated quantum phase transition between two topological states. It can be achieved by either sweeping the magnetic field or tuning the carrier density. The recent realization of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators with tunable Chern numbers introduces the channel degree of freedom to the dissipation-free chiral edge transport and makes the study of the quantum phase transition between two topological states under zero magnetic field possible. Here, we synthesized the magnetic topological insulator (TI)/TI pentalayer heterostructures with different Cr doping concentrations in the middle magnetic TI layers using molecular beam epitaxy. By performing transport measurements, we found a potential plateau phase transition between C=1 and C=2 QAH states under zero magnetic field. In tuning the transition, the Hall resistance monotonically decreases from h/e2 to h/2e 2 , concurrently, the longitudinal resistance exhibits a maximum at the critical point. Our results show that the ratio between the Hall resistance and the longitudinal resistance is greater than 1 at the critical point, which indicates that the original chiral edge channel from the C=1 QAH state coexists with the dissipative bulk conduction channels. Subsequently, these bulk conduction channels appear to self-organize and form the second chiral edge channel in completing the plateau phase transition. Our study will motivate further investigations of this novel Chern number change-induced quantum phase transition and advance the development of the QAH chiral edge current-based electronic and spintronic devices.

Frustrated Kondo impurity triangle: A simple model of deconfinement

We report that the concepts of deconfinement and topological order are of great current interest for quantum information science and for our understanding of quantum materials. Here, we introduce a simple model of three antiferromagnetically coupled Kondo impurities, a Kondo triangle, which can be used to further extend the application of these concepts to electronic systems. We show that, by tuning the magnetic frustration, the Kondo triangle undergoes a quantum phase transition between two phases of unbroken symmetry, signaling a phase transition beyond the Landau paradigm. We demonstrate that the frustrated spin liquid phase is described by a three-channel Kondo (3CK) fixed point and thus displays an irrational ground state degeneracy. Using an Abrikosov pseudofermion representation, this quantum state is categorized by an emergent U(1) gauge field and its projective symmetry group. The gauge theory is deconfining in the sense that a miniature Wilson loop orders and topological defects (instantons in the gauge field) are expelled. This phase persists in the presence of moderate Kondo screening until proliferation of topological defects leads to a quantum phase transition to an unfrustrated Fermi liquid phase. Based on this evidence, we propose that the 3CK phase displays topological order in a similar sense as gapless spin liquids.

Gapless to gapless phase transitions in quantum spin chains

We investigate spin chains with bilinear-biquadratic (BLBQ) spin interactions as a function of an applied magnetic field h. At the Uimin-Lai-Sutherland (ULS) critical point we find a gapless to gapless transition revealed by the dynamical structure factor S(q,ω) as a function of h. At h=0, the envelope of the lowest-energy excitations goes soft at two points, q 1 =2π/3 and q 2 =4π/3, dubbed the phase A. With increasing field, the spectral peaks at each of the gapless points bifurcate, making in total four soft modes, and combine to form a new set of excitations that soften at a single point q=π at h c1 ≈0.94. Beyond h c1 the system enters another gapless B phase until the transition at h c2 =4 to the fully polarized phase. We compare the ULS model results with those for the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model as a representative of the gapped Haldane phase. We explain the mechanism of the gapless to gapless transition in the ULS model using its conserved charges and a spinon band picture. We also discuss the universality of central charges of the BLBQ family of models subjected to a magnetic field.
