Corrigendum to “The Emissions Model Intercomparison Project (Emissions-MIP): quantifying model sensitivity to emission characteristics” published in Atmos. Chem. Phys., 23, 14779–14799, 2023

Anthropogenic emissions of aerosols and precursor compounds are known to significantly affect the energy balance of the Earth–atmosphere system, alter the formation of clouds and precipitation, and have a substantial impact on human health and the environment. Global models are an essential tool for examining the impacts of these emissions. In this study, we examine the sensitivity of model results to the assumed height of SO 2 injection, seasonality of SO 2 and black carbon (BC) particulate emissions, and the assumed fraction of SO 2 emissions that is injected into the atmosphere as particulate phase sulfate (SO 4 ) in 11 climate and chemistry models, including both chemical transport models and the atmospheric component of Earth system models. We find large variation in atmospheric lifetime across models for SO 2 , SO 4 , and BC, with a particularly large relative variation for SO 2 , which indicates that fundamental aspects of atmospheric sulfur chemistry remain uncertain. Of the perturbations examined in this study, the assumed height of SO 2 injection had the largest overall impacts, particularly on global mean net radiative flux (maximum difference of -0.35?W?m-2), SO2 lifetime over Northern Hemisphere land (maximum difference of 0.8?d), surface SO 2 concentration (up to 59?% decrease), and surface sulfate concentration (up to 23?% increase). Emitting SO 2 at height consistently increased SO 2 and SO 4 column burdens and shortwave cooling, with varying magnitudes, but had inconsistent effects across models on the sign of the change in implied cloud forcing. The assumed SO 4 emission fraction also had a significant impact on net radiative flux and surface sulfate concentration. Because these properties are not standardized across models this is a source of inter-model diversity typically neglected in model intercomparisons. These results imply a need to ensure that anthropogenic emission injection height and SO 4 emission fraction are accurately and consistently represented in global models.

Creative revision - From rough draft to published paper

The process of revising a technical or scientific paper can be performed more efficiently by the people involved (author, co-author, supervisor, editor) when the revision is controlled by breaking it into a series of steps. The revision process recommended here is based on the levels-of-edit concept that resulted from a study of the technical editorial function at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of the California Institute of Technology. Types of revision discussed are Substantive, Policy, Language, Mechanical Style, Format, Integrity, and Copy Clarification.

New data for the lunar 20 core and a survey of published chemical data

Lunar core samples were analyzed using a spark source mass spectrometer. The analytical results for the four zones of the Lunar 20 core suggest that the core is nonuniform with depth. The higher concentrations of Ce, Sc, Sc, Ba, La, Co, Sr, and Zr in zone 2001 may be connected with the presence in this zone of a basaltic rock type seldom seen in the other zones. That is, about half of the basaltic fragments in the large size fractions in zone 2001 are of a specific porphyritic breccia-like type. Anorthositic fragments containing a notable amount of metallic iron are basically limited to zone 2004 and probably explain the lower concentrations of Ce, Rb, Ba, La, and perhaps Co in this zone. The high concentrations of Ag and Ce found previously are confirmed. Although Ag is at nearly the same concentration in all four zones of the core, Cd in the core is the result of local enrichment. In particular, in zone 2004 the concentration of Cd may be as high as 10 ppm in a sample size of 0.01 mg.

Validation of published Stirling engine design methods using engine characteristics from the literature

Four fully disclosed reference engines and five design methods are discussed. So far, the agreement between theory and experiment is about as good for the simpler calculation methods as it is for the more complicated methods, that is, within 20%. For the simpler methods, a one number adjustable constant can be used to reduce the error in predicting power output and efficiency over the entire operating map to less than 10%.

Summary of flat-plate solar array project documentation. Abstracts of published documents, 1975 to June 1982

Technologies that will enable the private sector to manufacture and widely use photovoltaic systems for the generation of electricity in residential, commercial, industrial, and government applications at a cost per watt that is competitive with other means is investigated. Silicon refinement processes, advanced silicon sheet growth techniques, solar cell development, encapsulation, automated fabrication process technology, advanced module/array design, and module/array test and evaluation techniques are developed.

The magnetic state of the Earth (according to the magnetic maps for 1880.0 published by the German Naval Office)

Publication of the magnetic maps in 1880 has made it possible to make the first continuation of the foundations for the Earth's magnetism established by Gauss in the general theory of Earth magnetism. A new calculation based on the maps valid for 1880, makes it possible to express the changes which have occurred over the last 50 years in numbers and only within the liability limits of the maps themselves.

Diamondlike carbon - A bibliography of published papers and reports

A bibliography of references on investigations of diamond-like carbon (DLC) materials is presented. The list was developed over several years of active research and by computerized searches for the following keywords: diamondlike carbon, diamond-like carbon, hard carbon, i-carbon, A-C:H, and amorphous hydrogenated carbon. The bibliography has 241 citations, begins in 1956, includes an author index and was last updated in August 1985.

Summary of flat-plate solar array project documentation: Abstracts of published documents, 1975-1986, revision 1

Abstracts of final reports, or the latest quarterly or annual, of the Flat-Plate Solar Array (FSA) Project Contractor of Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in-house activities are presented. Also presented is a list of proceedings and publications, by author, of work connected with the project. The aim of the program has been to stimulate the development of technology that will enable the private sector to manufacture and widely use photovoltaic systems for the generation of electricity in residential, commercial, industrial, and Government applications at a cost per watt that is competitive with utility generated power. FSA Project activities have included the sponsoring of research and development efforts in silicon refinement processes, advanced silicon sheet growth techniques, higher efficiency solar cells, solar cell/module fabrication processes, encapsulation, module/array engineering and reliability, and economic analyses.
