Thermal Stress Reduction in Power Switching Devices Using Distributed Loss PWM Concept for Current Source Inverters

A new modulation scheme is proposed for current source inverters (CSIs) that reduces the variation and peak junction temperature in the CSIs' power devices. The distributed loss pulse-width modulation (DLM) concept is introduced and applied to traditional space vector modulation methods to develop modified modulation schemes that reduce the thermal stress on power devices. The device junction temperatures resulting from conventional and DLM schemes are compared. Simulation and experimental results confirm that the proposed DLM concept reduces thermal stress on the devices while maintaining the same high output current waveform quality compared to traditional CSI modulation schemes. The CSI power device lifetime (i.e., the number of cycles to failure) are estimated using the simulation and experimental results. The proposed DLM significantly increases the device lifetime (by 5 to 6 times) by reducing the junction temperature variation compared to the conventional modulations.

Fast microwave switching power divider

Unit divides power from single input among any 12 of 120 output terminals and redistributes it in 6 microseconds. Microwave current from coaxial line excites disk feeding many radial strip transmission lines. Built for use in electronically-steered S-band antenna, device also divides and switches energy among filters and phase shifters.

Magnetically switched power supply system for lasers

A laser power supply system is described in which separate pulses are utilized to avalanche ionize the gas within the laser and then produce a sustained discharge to cause the gas to emit light energy. A pulsed voltage source is used to charge a storage device such as a distributed capacitance. A transmission line or other suitable electrical conductor connects the storage device to the laser. A saturable inductor switch is coupled in the transmission line for containing the energy within the storage device until the voltage level across the storage device reaches a predetermined level, which level is less than that required to avalanche ionize the gas. An avalanche ionization pulse generating circuit is coupled to the laser for generating a high voltage pulse of sufficient amplitude to avalanche ionize the laser gas. Once the laser gas is avalanche ionized, the energy within the storage device is discharged through the saturable inductor switch into the laser to provide the sustained discharge. The avalanche ionization generating circuit may include a separate voltage source which is connected across the laser or may be in the form of a voltage multiplier circuit connected between the storage device and the laser.

Smart controller with phantom inductor current sensing for switched mode power supplies

Voltage on the output terminal of an inductor is obtained as a first input signal to a control block (CB); the inductor has an input terminal connected to a power switch and driver block at a switching node. A sense input voltage is obtained on an output terminal of a sensing circuit that is not directly connected to the switching node, as a second input signal to the CB. A voltage is generated on a first output terminal of the CB and is selected such that the CB can use its first and second input signals to infer the current through the inductor. A pulse width modulation (PWM) signal is generated on a second output terminal of the CB, based on the inferred current through the inductor; the second output signal from the CB is provided to a PWM input terminal of the power switch and driver block.

Power-switch dV/dt sensing

Simple means for controlling voltage risetime and powerline noise used three transistors and capacitive feedback. Rate of change of voltage across load is reduced and controlled by circuit. Circuit is useful in situations where large wire bundles are subject to noise and crosstalk due to rapid current switching.

Load balancing multimodule switching power converters

Regulating system individually adjusts duty cycles of modules so that all share load equally, thus, protects individual modules and their components from overload and increases reliability and life expectancy. Converters are alternative to high-power, single unit systems.

Gigarad-tolerant power switches and memory elements

A new class of silicon devices operating without p-n junctions has been studied for radiation hardness. The electric field in these devices is uniform over most of the device, thus causing high-voltage breakdown to increase with electrode spacing. Deep acceptor levels are created in the silicon by diffusing gold atoms into the lattice, or by electron radiation. These acceptor levels, near the center of the band gap, trap out electrons so that the low resistivity of the n-type doped wafer can be raised to intrinsic resistivity. Switching between a high-resistivity state at low currents and a low-resistivity state at high currents occurs at a definite threshold voltage, exhibiting characteristics similar to silicon-controlled rectifiers. Compensating 0.1 ohm-meter (10 ohm-cm) silicon wafers requires electron fluxes of 10 to the 23rd electrons per square meter (10 to the 19th electrons per square centimeter). Experiments demonstrating gamma tolerance to 1 Gigarad(Si) are described. Calculations for maximum tolerable neutron fluence are shown, and a phenomenological explanation for these results is presented.

Low Temperature Operation of a Switching Power Converter

The low temperature operation of a 48 W, 50 kHz, 36/12 V pulse width modulated (PWM) buck de-de power converter designed with standard commercially available components and devices is reported. The efficiency of the converter increased from 85.6% at room temperature (300 K) to 92.0% at liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K). The variation of power MOSFET, diode rectifier, and output filter inductor loss with temperature is discussed. Relevant current, voltage. and power waveforms are also included.

Dual mode solid state power switch

A solid state amplifier has an output transistor stage and an input transistor stage interconnected as a Darlington circuit. An interstage transistor interconnecting the collectors of the two stages of the Darlington circuit is connected with the first stage transistor in a compound configuration. When the load current furnished by the amplifier is less than a predetermined value, the output stage operates as a simple saturated switch with its base drive current flowing through the emitter-base junction of the first stage which produces no collector current because the base-emitter junction of the interstage transistor is reverse-biased. When the load current exceeds said predetermined value, the interstage transistor begins to conduct allowing the input and output stages to operate as a Darlington amplifier and diverting a significant portion of the base drive current of the output transistor back into the load.

High voltage-high power components for large space power distribution systems

Space power components including a family of bipolar power switching transistors, fast switching power diodes, heat pipe cooled high frequency transformers and inductors, high frequency conduction cooled transformers, high power-high frequency capacitors, remote power controllers and rotary power transfer devices were developed. Many of these components such as the power switching transistors, power diodes and the high frequency capacitor are commercially available. All the other components were developed to the prototype level. The dc/dc series resonant converters were built to the 25 kW level.
