Characterization of the Soluble and Insoluble Portions of Solids from the Salt Waste Processing Facility Tank 201 and Tank 202 Samples

The Salt Waste Processing Facility (SWPF) Tank 201 and Tank 202 samples have been characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive x-ray (SEM/EDX), particle size analysis (PSA-Microtrac), Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR) spectroscopic techniques to characterize and identify organic and inorganic components in Tanks 201 and 202 as part of efforts to understand the problems occurring at SWPF due to the presence of solids in the recovered solvent.

Experimental investigation of the performance of vortex generators mounted in the supersonic portion of a mixed-compression inlet

Vortex generators were investigated as a means of controlling the throat boundary layer in a Mach 2.5 mixed-compression inlet. With or without throat bleed, the generators were unable to produce the inlet peak recoveries available with good performance bleed. Generators placed on the unbled inlet centerbody ahead of the cowl shock impingement point degraded inlet performance. Generators placed further aft on the unbled centerbody, but ahead of the throat, improved inlet performance at conditions where the terminal shock could cause boundary layer separation. Adding generators to the inlet with throat bleed reduced performance. Bleed aft of the generators degraded the vortex flow field.

Large nebular complexes in the northern portion of the galaxy

Several northern complexes of ionized hydrogen, stars, and possibly nonthermal radio emission are known whose properties are similiar to those of the Gum nebula. Among the best known complexes are the Ori I and Ceph IV associations and IC 1795, IC 1805, and IC 1848. Each of these complexes contains an extended ring structure and requires more excitation than is available from the known early stars. The properties of these objects were examined and many of the properties of the Gum nebula are common to such galactic complexes.

Petrology of a portion of the Mare Fecunditatis regolith.

Extensive microprobe analyses have been made of pyroxenes, plagioclases, olivines, opaque minerals, and glasses in two 0.025 g lunar samples returned from the Luna 16 mission, with the aim to characterize the Mare Fecunditatis regolith. No major differences were found between the near surface soil horizon A and horizon D at approximately 30 cm depth. Resulting characteristics of the mineral examined are presented and discussed.

A preliminary evaluation of land use mapping and change detection capabilities using an ERTS image covering a portion of the CARETS region

The author has identified the following significant results. A preliminary study on the capabilities of ERTS data in land use mapping and change detection was carried out in the area around Frederick County, Maryland, which lies in the northwest corner of the Central Atlantic Regional Ecological Test Site. The investigation has revealed that Level 1 (of the Anderson classification system) land use mapping can be performed and that, in some cases, land undergoing change can be identified. Results to date suggest that more work should be done in areas where land use changes are known to exist, in order to establish some form of base for recognizing the spectral signature indicative of change areas.

Supersonic aerodynamic characteristics associated with variations in the geometry of the forward portion of irregular planform wings

The experimental longitudinal and lateral-directional stability characteristics of a Langley conceptual space shuttle orbiter design have been obtained for a series of inboard planform fillets in a unitary plan wind tunnel. Fillet sweep angles up to 78 deg were investigated while holding the spanwise intersection of the fillet and wing constant. The data were obtained at Mach numbers of 2.36 to 4.63 and at Reynolds numbers (depending on Mach number) of 1.5 million to 2.5 million per foot. The angle of attack was varied from about minus 2 deg to 44 deg at 0 deg and 3 deg of sideslip.

Mesosiderites. I - Compositions of their metallic portions and possible relationship to other metal-rich meteorite groups

The metal from 17 mesosiderites has been analyzed for Ni, Ga, Ge, and Ir by the techniques of atomic-absorption spectrometry and neutron activation. Most mesosiderite metal samples fall in a narrow compositional range: Ni, 7.0-9.0%; Ga, 13-16 ppm; Ge, 47-58 ppm; and Ir, 2.4-4.4 ppm. Most of those falling outside these ranges belong to Powell's (1971) least-metamorphosed type. Mesosiderite metal falls in the same general composition range as IIIAB irons, IIIE irons, pallasites and H-group chondrite metal. There are distinct differences in detail, however, and firm evidence for a close genetic relationship between any of these groups and the mesosiderites is lacking.
