Investigation of relationships between linears, total and hazy areas, and petroleum production in the Williston Basin: An ERTS approach

The author has identified the following significant results. ERTS-1 imagery in a variety of formats was used to locate linear, tonal, and hazy features and to relate them to areas of hydrocarbon production in the Williston Basin of North Dakota, eastern Montana, and northern South Dakota. Derivative maps of rectilinear, curvilinear, tonal, and hazy features were made using standard laboratory techniques. Mapping of rectilinears on both bands 5 and 7 over the entire region indicated the presence of a northeast-southwest and a northwest-southeast regional trend which is indicative of the bedrock fracture pattern in the basin. Curved lines generally bound areas of unique tone, maps of tonal patterns repeat many of the boundaries seen on curvilinear maps. Tones were best analyzed on spring and fall imagery in the Williston Basin. It is postulated that hazy areas are caused by atmospheric phenomena. The ability to use ERTS imagery as an exploration tool was examined where petroleum and gas are presently produced (Bottineau Field, Nesson and Antelope anticlines, Redwing Creek, and Cedar Creek anticline). It is determined that some tonal and linear features coincide with location of present production in Redwing and Cedar Creeks. In the remaining cases, targets could not be sufficiently well defined to justify this method.

Application of NASTRAN to a fluid solids unit in the petroleum industry

The application of NASTRAN to the design of a fluid solids unit plenum/cyclone/dipleg assembly is described. The major loads considered are thermal, pressure, and gravity. Such applications are of interest in the petroleum industry since the equipment described is historically critical.

Benefits of VTOL aircraft in offshore petroleum logistics support

The mission suitability and potential economic benefits of advanced VTOL aircraft were investigated for logistics support of petroleum operations in the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. Concepts such as the tilt rotor and lift/cruise fan are promising for future operations beyond 150 miles offshore, where their high cruise efficiency provides savings in trip time, fuel consumption, and capital investment. Depending upon mission requirements, the aircraft operating costs are reduced by as much as 20 percent to 50 percent from those of current helicopters.

Thermal alteration experiments on organic matter in recent marine sediments as a model for petroleum genesis

The fate of naturally occurring lipids and pigments in a marine sediment exposed to elevated temperatures was studied. Samples of a young marine sediment from Tanner Basin, California, were heated to a series of temperatures (65-200 C) for varying periods of time (7-64 days). The sediment was analyzed prior to and after heating for pigments, isoprenoid compounds, alcohols, fatty acids, and hydrocarbons. Structural changes caused by heating unextractable organic material (kerogen) were also studied, and the significance of the results for understanding petroleum genesis is considered. Among other results, fatty acids and hydrocarbons increased in abundance although there appeared to be no obvious precursor-to-product relationship via simple decarboxylation reactions. Chlorins were partially converted into porphyrins. The phytyl side chain of pheophytin was initially preserved intact by reduction of the phytyl double bond, but later converted to a variety of isoprenoid compounds including alkanes. Thermal grafting of components onto kerogen occurred as well as structural changes caused by heat.

The use of radar and LANDSAT data for mineral and petroleum exploration in the Los Andes region, Venezuela

A geological study of a 27,500 sq km area in the Los Andes region of northwestern Venezuela was performed which employed both X-band radar mosaics and computer processed Landsat images. The 3.12 cm wavelength radar data were collected with horizontal-horizontal polarization and 10 meter spatial resolution by an Aeroservices SAR system at an altitude of 12,000 meters. The radar images increased the number of observable suspected fractures by 27 percent over what could be mapped by LANDSAT alone, owing mostly to the cloud cover penetration capabilities of radar. The approximate eight fold greater spatial resolution of the radar images made possible the identification of shorter, narrower fractures than could be detected with LANDSAT data alone, resulting in the discovery of a low relief anticline that could not be observed in LANDSAT data. Exploration targets for petroleum, copper, and uranium were identified for further geophysical work.

Determination of aromatics and olefins in wide-boiling petroleum fractions

A chromatographic method is described herein for the analysis of aromatics and olefins in wide boiling petroleum fractions. The fuel is split into four fractions: nonaromatic, intermediate, pure aromatic, and wash. The analysis, which need be run only on the intermediate cut to determine aromatics in the fuel, is based on specific dispersion. With analysis times of less than 8 hours, accuracies of 1 percent were attained.

Strategic Petroleum Reserve Cavern Leaching Monitoring CY23

The effects of raw water leaching at the U.S. SPR were modeled using SANSMIC. In addition to 18 caverns identified in previous leaching reports, six caverns have been identified for further monitoring based on the results of this report. SANSMIC continues to serve as a useful tool for monitoring changes in cavern shape. However, some caverns where string cuts were made in the middle of drawdowns are showing overprediction in the SANSMIC model when compared with recent sonars.

Summary of Pilot Project State Technical Assistance on Multi-Sector Analysis for Electric and Petroleum Fuels

The Oregon Energy Security Plan, (ODOE 2024) published in September 2024, builds a strong case for the state to give acute attention to the fuel supply chain. In December 2024, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in partnership with Oregon Department of Energy (ODOE), announced a pilot project to conduct an analysis that synthesizes current and projected transportation fuel dynamics, supply chain risks, and risk comparators with relevant sectors, such as transportation electrification, sponsored by the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER). The study, is intended to leverage existing modeling and frameworks from a recent 2024 sector coupling analysis supported by the DOEs Office of Electricity (OE) (B. Mitra, S. Pal, et al., Coupling of the Electricity and Transportation Sectors - Part I: Sector Overviews 2024) (B. Mitra, S. Pal and J. Reeve, et al. 2024). While the PNNL team set out to conduct a quantitative risk analysis driven by detailed data that synthesizes current and projected transportation fuel dynamics, supply chain risks, and risk comparators with relevant sectors. The intention was to provide an approach that could be extendable to other parts of the country. They encountered data limitations and adjusted their approach accordingly. This report summarizes PNNL's original plan for executing the study, including limitations for obtaining data requirements for fuel flows and interim products, as well as a risk matrix that can be used to identify supply chain risks.

Strategic Petroleum Reserve Cavern Leaching Monitoring CY24

This report provides an analysis of the effects of raw water leaching at the U.S. SPR using the Sandia Solution Mining Code (SANSMIC). A new version of the code has been established in the past year (implemented in Python and C++ code) and was used for this annual report. Additionally, the setup, running, and post-processing of leaching modeling has now been streamlined into a single Python notebook environment for each cavern run.
