Lightning Protection System

A new Lightning Protection System (LPS) was designed and built at Launch Complex 39B (LC-39B), at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Florida, in 2009, for NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) program. A comprehensive lightning monitoring system was additionally designed and the LC-39B lightning instrumentation started incremental deployment early 2011. By March 2011, the LC-39B lightning monitoring system was activated with short outages during construction and renovations of the LC-39B. Since 2011, the LC-39B LPS has been directly struck at least once per year. The earliest and latest in a year that the LPS has been directly struck by lightning has been January 7th and October 1st (both 2017), respectively. During the summer of 2018, the Mobile Launcher 1 (ML-1) lightning monitoring system was deployed and partially active during ML-1 construction/testing. Since 2018, the ML-1 has been parked at the LC-39B for different durations of time for integrated testing. Early August 2019 (6th and 9th ) multiple lightning strikes terminated directly on the LPS at three different locations in addition to a nearby strike within the Pad perimeter and multiple nearby strikes outside the Pad Perimeter, triggering both, the LC-39B and the ML-1 lightning monitoring systems. This has been the first time direct lightning strikes have terminated on the LPS or within the LC-39B perimeter while the ML-1 has been at the LC-39B. This paper summarizes direct and close nearby lightning strikes to LC-39B from 2011 until the summer of 2019.

Concealed hinge permits flush mounting of doors and hatches

Hinge assembly permits flush mounting of doors and hatches of considerable thickness so that the axis of instant rotation, produced by the hinge, lies outside the panel surface and beyond the perimeter adjacent to the hinge. In operation, motion of the assembly is initially parallel, changing to angular after clearing the panel perimeter.

CESEMI studies of Apollo 14 and 15 fines.

Quantitative size and shape analyses have been carried out on six lunar fines from Apollo 14 and 15 by computer evaluation of scanning electron microscope images (CESEMI). For the size range of 0.50 to 30 microns diameter, the distributions are log-normal on a number count basis. This finding is in contrast with results for coarser materials in the fines reported by King et al. suggesting the operation of a different process. Aspect ratios range from 0.1 to 1.0 with an average value of about 0.6. Only slight differences are observed among samples. A shape complexity factor (ratio of particle perimeter to ellipse perimeter) also varies only slightly among the six samples.

Morphometric characteristics of particles of regolith returned by Luna 16 automatic station

A study was made of the shape of regolith particles in the 0.5 to 1.0 mm fraction; two parameters were calculated for this fraction: (1) Sphericity -- the ratio of the projection area of a particle to the area of the minimum circumscribed circle; and (2) the ratio of the perimeter of the projection of the particle to the perimeter of a circle having the same width. For comparison, this technique was used in studying geometrical figures and terrestrial formations: sands, slags of present day volcanoes, and crushed basalt. It was established that regolith particles are shaped from the following groups: spherules; breccias and fragments; slags and sinters. Regolith differs sharply from ordinary homogeneous terrestrial formations in the diversity of particle shapes, associated with their polygenicity. Fragments of crushed basalt are less regular than fragments of basalt from regolith.

Mapping a recent forest fire with ERTS-1 MSS data

Accurate fire boundary delineation provides essential information to forest managers in allocating suppression costs and planning regeneration efforts. The objective of this study was to test the capability of computer-aided analysis of ERTS-1 MSS data to accurately define the boundary of a recent forest fire and to discriminate spectral classes within the perimeter. Two frames of ERTS-1 MSS data were selected for analysis of the Moccasin Mesa Fire in Mesa Verde National Park. Data sets were collected one-half growing season and one full growing season after the fire. Results indicate that computer-aided analysis of ERTS-1 MSS data has the capability for accurately delineating fire boundaries and determining acreage of the burned area. Distinct spectral classes may also be defined within the fire perimeter.

Investigation of spatial misregistration effects in multispectral scanner data

The author has identified the following significant results. A model for estimating the expected proportion of multiclass pixels in a scene was generalized and extended to include misregistration effects. Another substantial effort was the development of a simulation model to generate signatures to represent the distributions of signals from misregistered multiclass pixels, based on single class signatures. Spatial misregistration causes an increase in the proportion of multiclass pixels in a scene and a decorrelation between signals in misregistered data channels. The multiclass pixel proportion estimation model indicated that this proportion is strongly dependent on the pixel perimeter and on the ratio of the total perimeter of the fields in the scene to the area of the scene. Test results indicated that expected values computed with this model were similar to empirical measurements made of this proportion in four LACIE data segments.

Morphometric consistency with the Hausdorff-Besicovich dimension

Studies using different measurement resolutions on a single morphologic feature may yield vastly different measured values for the perimeter. Apparent internal inconsistencies such as these have greatly impeded the numerical taxonomy, description, and modeling of landforms. Fortunately, the underlying internal consistency of measurements can often be reestablished by introducing the Hausdorff-Besicovich dimension into the analysis. This is demonstrated here by the example of perimeter-area ratio measurements made on some of the complicated ejecta deposits that surround many Martian meteorite-impact craters.

Fractal statistics of cloud fields

Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS) and Thematic Mapper (TM) data, with 80 and 30 m spatial resolution, respectively, have been employed to study the spatial structure of boundary-layer and intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) clouds. The probability distributions of cloud areas and cloud perimeters are found to approximately follow a power-law, with a different power (i.e., fractal dimension) for each cloud type. They are better approximated by a double power-law behavior, indicating a change in the fractal dimension at a characteristic size which depends upon cloud type. The fractal dimension also changes with threshold. The more intense cloud areas are found to have a higher perimeter fractal dimension, perhaps indicative of the increased turbulence at cloud top. A detailed picture of the inhomogeneous spatial structure of various cloud types will contribute to a better understanding of basic cloud processes, and also has implications for the remote sensing of clouds, for their effects on remote sensing of other parameters, and for the parameterization of clouds in general circulation models, all of which rely upon plane-parallel radiative transfer algorithms.

The locator system for wandering individuals

Configurations and operation strategies are described for a wanderer locator system based on wireless radio frequency communication designed to monitor elderly patients who may wander beyond safe perimeters in the home or in an institutional setting. The modular components of this wandering notification system are (1) portable transmitter/receivers to be worn or carried by the patient and the caretaker, (2) detectors to be mounted in doorways or other perimeters of a safe area, (3) programmable central processing units to control, communicate with, and/or trace the portable and remote devices, and (4) a cathode ray tube that can display information on patient location or system status. Photographs of all system components and illustrations of operations concepts are included.

Parametric binary dissection

Binary dissection is widely used to partition non-uniform domains over parallel computers. This algorithm does not consider the perimeter, surface area, or aspect ratio of the regions being generated and can yield decompositions that have poor communication to computation ratio. Parametric Binary Dissection (PBD) is a new algorithm in which each cut is chosen to minimize load + lambda x(shape). In a 2 (or 3) dimensional problem, load is the amount of computation to be performed in a subregion and shape could refer to the perimeter (respectively surface) of that subregion. Shape is a measure of communication overhead and the parameter permits us to trade off load imbalance against communication overhead. When A is zero, the algorithm reduces to plain binary dissection. This algorithm can be used to partition graphs embedded in 2 or 3-d. Load is the number of nodes in a subregion, shape the number of edges that leave that subregion, and lambda the ratio of time to communicate over an edge to the time to compute at a node. An algorithm is presented that finds the depth d parametric dissection of an embedded graph with n vertices and e edges in O(max(n log n, de)) time, which is an improvement over the O(dn log n) time of plain binary dissection. Parallel versions of this algorithm are also presented; the best of these requires O((n/p) log(sup 3)p) time on a p processor hypercube, assuming graphs of bounded degree. How PBD is applied to 3-d unstructured meshes and yields partitions that are better than those obtained by plain dissection is described. Its application to the color image quantization problem is also discussed, in which samples in a high-resolution color space are mapped onto a lower resolution space in a way that minimizes the color error.

Human parathyroid hormone-(1-38) restores cancellous bone to the immobilized, osteopenic proximal tibial metaphysis in rats

The purpose of this study was to determine if human parathyroid hormone-(1-38) (PTH) can restore cancellous bone mass to the established osteopenic, immobilized proximal tibial metaphyses (PTM) of female rats. The right hindlimbs of six-month-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were immobilized by bandaging the right hindlimbs to the abdomen. After 30 days of right hindlimb immobilization (RHLI), the rats were subcutaneously injected with 200 microgram hPTH(1-38)/kg/day for 15 (short-term) or 75 (longer-term) days. Static bone histomorphometry was performed on the primary spongiosa, while both static and dynamic histomorphometry were performed on the secondary spongiosa of the right PTM. Immobilization for 30 days without treatment decreased trabecular bone area, number and thickness in both primary and secondary spongiosa, and induced an increase in eroded perimeter and a decrease in tissue referent-bone formation rate (BFR/TV) in the secondary spongios. These changes reached a new steady state thereafter. Treatment with 200 microgram hPTH(1-38)/kg/day for 15 days, beginning at 30 days post immobilization (IM), significantly increased trabecular bone area, thickness and number in both primary and secondary spongiosa despite continuous IM when compared to the age-related and IM controls. The short-term (15 days) PTH treatment significantly increased labeling perimeter, mineral apposition rate and BFR/TV in the secondary spongiosa and stimulated longitudinal bone growth as compared to the age-related and IM controls. PTH treatment for longer-term (75 days) further increased trabecular bone area, thickness and number as compared to aging and IM controls and short-term (15 days) PTH treated groups. The bone formation indices in the secondary spongiosa of these longer-term treated rats were lower than that of short-term (15 days) PTH treated group, but they were still higher than those of IM and age-related controls. Our findings indicate that PTH treatment stimulates cancellous bone formation, restores and adds extra cancellous bone to the established, disuse-osteopenic proximal tibial metaphysis of continuously RHLI female rats. These results suggest that PTH may be a useful agent in treatment disuse-induced osteoporosis in humans.

Sinuosity of Martian rampart ejecta deposits

The sinuosities of 2213 Martian rampart ejecta craters are quantified through measurement of the ejecta flow front perimeter and ejecta area. This quantity, called lobateness, was computed for each complete lobe of the 1582 single lobe (SL), 251 double lobe (DL), and 380 multiple lobe (ML) craters included in this study. A lobateness value of 1 indicates a circular ejecta blanket, whereas more sinuous ejecta perimeters have lobateness values greater than 1. Although resolution does have an effect on the absolute values of lobateness, the general relationships between lobateness and morphology exist regardless of resolution. Evaluation of the lobateness values reveals that the outer lobes of DL and ML craters have higher median lobateness values (i.e., are more sinuous) than the inner lobes. The outermost lobe of ML craters displays higher lobateness values than the outer lobe of DL craters or the single lobe of SL craters. Previous reports of lobateness-diameter, lobateness-latitude, and lobateness-terrain relationships for rampart craters are not supported by this study. Many of the differences between the results of this study and the previous lobateness analyses can be attributed to the inclusion of resolution effects and the distinction between different ejecta morphologies in this study. The results of this study taken together with a previous analysis of the distribution and diameter dependence of different ejecta morphologies are most consistent with the theory that Martian lobate ejecta morphologies form from impact into subsurface volatiles.

Crystallography of rare galactic honeycomb structure near supernova 1987a

Near supernova 1987a, the rare honeycomb structure of 20-30 galactic bubbles measures 30 x 90 light years. Its remarkable regularity in bubble size suggests a single-event origin which may correlate with the nearby supernova. To test the honeycomb's regularity in shape and size, the formalism of statistical crystallography is developed here for bubble sideness. The standard size-shape relations (Lewis's law, Desch's law, and Aboav-Weaire's law) govern area, perimeter and nearest neighbor shapes. Taken together, they predict a highly non-equilibrium structure for the galactic honeycomb which evolves as a bimodal shape distribution without dominant bubble perimeter energy.

Verification of a three-dimensional resin transfer molding process simulation model

Experimental evidence was obtained to complete the verification of the parameters needed for input to a three-dimensional finite element model simulating the resin flow and cure through an orthotropic fabric preform. The material characterizations completed include resin kinetics and viscosity models, as well as preform permeability and compaction models. The steady-state and advancing front permeability measurement methods are compared. The results indicate that both methods yield similar permeabilities for a plain weave, bi-axial fiberglass fabric. Also, a method to determine principal directions and permeabilities is discussed and results are shown for a multi-axial warp knit preform. The flow of resin through a blade-stiffened preform was modeled and experiments were completed to verify the results. The predicted inlet pressure was approximately 65% of the measured value. A parametric study was performed to explain differences in measured and predicted flow front advancement and inlet pressures. Furthermore, PR-500 epoxy resin/IM7 8HS carbon fabric flat panels were fabricated by the Resin Transfer Molding process. Tests were completed utilizing both perimeter injection and center-port injection as resin inlet boundary conditions. The mold was instrumented with FDEMS sensors, pressure transducers, and thermocouples to monitor the process conditions. Results include a comparison of predicted and measured inlet pressures and flow front position. For the perimeter injection case, the measured inlet pressure and flow front results compared well to the predicted results. The results of the center-port injection case showed that the predicted inlet pressure was approximately 50% of the measured inlet pressure. Also, measured flow front position data did not agree well with the predicted results. Possible reasons for error include fiber deformation at the resin inlet and a lag in FDEMS sensor wet-out due to low mold pressures.

Adaptation of Cancellous Bone to Aging and Immobilization in Growing Rats

Two-and-a half month-old female rats were subjected to right hindlimb immobilization or served as controls for 0, 1, 2, 8, 14, and 20 weeks. The right hindlimb was immobilized by bandaging it against the abdomen, thus unloading it. Cancellous bone histomorphometry was performed on microradiographs and double-fluorescent labeled 20 micron sections of the distal femoral metaphyses. Primary spongiosa bone loss occurred rapidly by 2 weeks, and secondary spongiosa bone loss occurred rapidly by 8 weeks of immobilization, and then equilibrated at 60% less bone mass than age-related controls. The negative bone balance induced by immobilization was caused by transient increase in bone resorption, decrease in bone formation, and longitudinal bone growth. The dynamic data of secondary spongiosa cancellous bone showed that percent eroded perimeter was transiently elevated by 55% to 82% between 1 and 8 weeks, percent labeled perimeter was transiently depressed by 32% to 50% between 1 and 14 weeks, mineral apposition rate was depressed by 23% and 19% at 1 and 2 weeks, and bone formation rate-bone area referent was transiently depressed by 35% and 59%c at 1 and 2 weeks. All the above parameters were at age-related control levels by 20 weeks of immobilization. However, bone formation rate-tissue area referent was depressed (-65%) throughout the study. Immobilization depressed completely longitudinal bone growth by 2 weeks and remained so. Only 0.65 mm of new metaphysis was generated in the immobilized versus 2.1 mm in controls during the study period. The immobilization induced an early cancellous bone loss which equilibrated at a new steady state with less bone and a normal (age-related control) bone turnover rate. When these findings were compared to an earlier study of 9 month-old virgin females subjected to right hindlimb immobilization up to 26 weeks, we found the adaptive responses of the cancellous bone were identical except that they occurred earlier and equilibrated sooner in younger rats.

Effects of Prostaglandin E2 and Risedronate Administration on Cancellous Bone in Older Female Rats

The effects of Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and Risedronate (Ris) both separately and in combination (PGE2 + Ris) were studied on the intact aged female rat skeleton to determine whether the combination of PGE2 with an antiresorptive agent is more effective anabolically than PGE2 alone. Nine month-old Sprague-Dawley rats were injected subcutaneously either with vehicle, 6 mg PGE2/kg per day, 1 or 5 microgram Ris/kg twice a week, or 6 mg PGE2/kg per day plus 1 or 5 microgram Ris/kg twice a week (PGE2 + 1 Ris or PGE2 + 5 Ris) for 60 days. After the treatment, we determined the longitudinal bone growth rate, the qualitative appearance of the primary spongiosa (PS), and the static and dynamic bone histomorphometry of the secondary spongiosa (SS) of the proximal tibial metaphysis (PTM) by examining undecalcified longitudinal sections after double fluorescent labeling. The relative effects of these treatments on longitudinal bone growth were ranked as follows: PGE2 + 5 Ris greater than PGE2 + 1 Ris = basal greater than PGE2 greater than 1 microgram Ris = 5 microgram Ris = aging. The density of the PS was ranked as follows: PGE2 + 5 Ris greater than PGE2 + 1 Ris = PGE2 = 5 microgram Ris = 1 microgram Ris greater than basal = aging. The increase in density of the PS was the result of stimulated longitudinal growth and the action of bisphosphonate. Bone mass in the SS was ranked as follows: PGE2 + 5 Ris = PGE2 + 1 Ris = PGE2 greater than 5 microgram Ris = 1 microgram Ris = aging = basal. However, PGE2 alone and its cotreatment with Ris accumulated bone by different tissue mechanisms. PGE2 alone created new bone by increasing activation frequency 8.3-fold and the formation to resorption ratio 1.3-fold from the controls. The combination of PGE2 and Ris depressed activation frequency (-54% to -74%), and bone formation rate (tissue-based -31%, and bone-based -42%) and eroded surface (-79% to -81%), so as to increase the formation to resorption ratio (three- to four-fold) over PGE2 alone. The increased ratio was due primarily to a greater decrease in eroded perimeter than in labeled perimeter. The major finding of this study is that the combination of PGE2 and a bisphosphonate (Ris) is more anabolic than PGE2 or Ris alone when endochondral ossification is active, but PGE2 + Ris is no more anabolic than PGE2 alone in old bone without endochondral ossification. However, the tissue mechanisms by which PGE2 alone and PGE2 + Ris treatments accumulated bone differed in that the latter allowed the same bone mass to accumulate with lower levels of cell recruitment and activity.

Structure and Kinematics of a Complex Crater: Upheaval Dome, Southeast, Utah

Two vastly different phenomena, extraterrestrial impact and salt diapirism, have been proposed for the origin of Upheaval Dome. Upheaval Dome is a about 2.5-km-diameter structural dome surrounded by a 5-km-diameter ring structural depression, which is in turn flanked by extensive, nearly flat-lying Colorado Plateau strata. Seismic refraction data and geologic mapping indicate that the dome originated by the collapse of a transient cavity formed by impact; data also show that rising salt has had a negligible influence on dome development. Evidence for this includes several factors: (1) a rare lag deposit of impactite is present; (2) fan-tailed fracture surfaces (shatter surfaces) and a few shattercones are present; (3) the top of the underlying salt horizon is at least 500 m below the center of the dome, with no exposures of salt in the dome to support the possibility that a salt diapir has ascended through it; (4) sedimentary strata in the center are significantly imbricated by top-to-the-center thrust faulting and are complexly folded; (5) top-to-the-center low-angle normal faults are found at the perimeter of the structure; and (6) clastic dikes are widespread. The scarcity of melt rocks and shock fabrics is attributed to approximately 0.5 km of erosion; the structures of the dome reflect processes of complex crater development at a depth of about 0.5 km below the crater floor. Based on mapping and kinematic analysis, we infer that the dome formed mainly by centerward motion of rock units along listric faults. Outcrop-scale folding and upturning of beds, especially common in the center, largely resulted from this motion. In addition, we have detected some centerward motion of fault-bounded wedges resulting from displacements on subhorizontal faults that conjoin and die out within horizontal bedding in the perimeter of the structure. Collectively, the observed deformation accounts for the creation of both the central uplift and the encircling ring syncline.
