Risk Assessment and Management Workflow—An Example of the Southwest Regional Partnership

This paper summarizes the risk assessment and management workflow developed and applied to the Southwest Regional Partnership on Carbon Sequestration (SWP) Phase III Demonstration Project. The risk assessment and management workflow consists of six primary tasks, including management planning, identification, qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis, response planning, and monitoring. Within the workflow, the SWP assembled and iteratively updated a risk registry that identifies risks for all major activities of the project. Risk elements were ranked with respect to the potential impact to the project and the likelihood of occurrence. Both qualitative and quantitative risk analyses were performed. To graphically depict the interactions among risk elements and help building risk scenarios, process influence diagrams were used to represent the interactions. The SWP employed quantitative methods of risk analysis including Response Surface Method (RSM), Polynomial Chaos Expansion (PCE), and the National Risk Assessment Partnership (NRAP) toolset. The SWP also developed risk response planning and performed risk control and monitoring to prevent the risks from affecting the project and ensure the effectiveness of risk management. As part of risk control and monitoring, existing and new risks have been tracked and the response plan was subsequently evaluated. Findings and lessons learned from the SWP’s risk assessment and management efforts will provide valuable information for other commercial geological CO2 storage projects.

Solving Hard Problems with AI: Dramatically Accelerating Drug Discovery Through A Unique Public-Private Partnership

Dramatic disruptions in technologies can result in the creation of new markets, the emergence of new paradigms, and the displacement of entrenched approaches and business models. This can be especially pronounced when multiple technologies converge to create something new. Today, artificial intelligence (“AI”) is acting as an accelerant for such technology transformations. Still, the scope and depth of its impact will depend in part on our ability to address challenging problems that are surfacing without solutions. Industries will pursue AI for their corporate missions and to create shareholder value. But the timescales and applications can be incongruent with important public needs and with the longer research horizons required to make real progress. Public-Private partnerships are an important mechanism for tackling these rapidly emerging new, complex, challenging problems. Finally, this paper examines our experience gained by creating a unique public-private partnership to apply AI to one example of a hard problem that is particularly timely today-- dramatically accelerating drug discovery.

Regional Feedstock Partnership Biomass Quality Assessment Final Report

The United States (U.S.) Department of Energy (DOE) developed the Billion-Ton Vision to enable production of one-billion tons of sustainable, reliable biomass for the bioenergy industry by 2030 (Perlack et al., 2005). The Sun Grant Regional Feedstock Partnership (RFP) was organized to fill information gaps and validate biomass yield assumptions related to the Billion-Ton Study (Owens, 2018; Owens, Karlen, and Lacey, 2016). Along with the more than 130 scientific publications generated from these studies, yield and sustainability data from the RFP field trials not only validated the Billion-Ton estimates, but were critical in developing both the U.S. Billion-Ton Update report in 2011 and the 2016 Billion-Ton Report (DOE, 2011; 2016). The intention of this biomass quality assessment report is to build on these initial successes from the RFP field trials by focusing on variability in biomass quality data necessary to evaluate conversion performance. This report contains a summary of chemical quality results from samples collected as part of the RFP field trials. This report focuses on assessment of the impact of experimental agronomic designs on biomass properties followed by analyses of the impact of environmental and production variables on biomass properties. Datasets include species and other genetic variables, fertilizer treatments, harvest information, and yield, as well as other publicly available data such as precipitation, temperature, soil properties, and drought. The key outcomes from this chemical quality focused assessment have included: • Complete evaluation of the impacts of agronomic designs, genetics, and environmental conditions on chemical properties for Miscanthus, switchgrass, sorghum, energycane, mixed perennial grasses, and shrub willow short-rotation feedstocks • Over 30 peer review publications and technical reports focused on variability in quality data • Development of spatial and temporal environmental quality prediction maps for Miscanthus and switchgrass feedstocks allowing for comprehensive evaluation of variability in feedstock chemical quality across U.S. regions and over multiple harvest years

Community Microgrid Assistance Partnership (C-MAP) [Slides]

This informational webinar, held on Nov. 11, 2024, covered the structure, technical focus, and eligibility criteria for the first Request for Proposals (RFP) released by the Community Microgrid Assistance Partnership (C-MAP). Eligible communities are invited to propose a community-based microgrid development or improvement project for funding and/or technical assistance. C-MAP is a program led by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Electricity with management and coordination by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. C-MAP will bring together many of the organizations that are working to understand, improve, and implement advanced microgrid energy systems in underserved and Indigenous communities in remote areas, facilitating a new forum for engagement and collaboration. Wraparound services from regional organizations will support the participating communities in microgrid operations as it relates to advancing their energy goals.
