Octane Modeling of Isobutanol Blending into Gasoline

Thirty-four gasoline blendstocks for oxygenate blending were used to create finished gasoline blends with isobutanol content of 12.5 volume percent (vol. %) and 16 vol. %. The gasoline blendstocks and finished fuels were analyzed for octane number (research [RON] and motor [MON]) to determine the effect of blending isobutanol. Volumetric and molar linear blending models were developed to predict finished fuel RON and MON, starting from the properties and composition of the gasoline blendstocks and isobutanol. Results show the molar blending model provided a better fit for the experimental data than the volumetric blending model. The volumetric model was further improved by adding nonlinear terms, improving the error to within ~1 ON. Gasoline blendstock properties impacted the finished fuel RON/MON, with paraffins having a synergistic effect with isobutanol and olefins and aromatics having an antagonistic effect.

Renewable Octane Hyper boosting Blendstock for High-Efficiency (CRADA 494)

The goal of this project is to scale up the chemistry developed by Visolis to produce a high energy-density fuel blend stock mixture from fermentation derived intermediate. Fuel property measurements will be conducted on the initial mixture to guide process refinement to produce a blend stock mixture that has the optimum composition and combustion properties to boost the octane rating of the finished fuels.

A field ionization study of octan-2-one

Electron-impact studies on deuterated aliphatic ketones have demonstrated that partial H/D randomization tends to occur prior to fragmentation. The scope of the studies is extended to include the kinetics and mechanisms of the fragmentation processes induced by field ionization of octan-2-one at very short times within the very high field in the vicinity of the blade emitter and at longer times in the low field regions.

Activation of hydrocarbons and the octane number

This report presents an examination of the history of research on engine knocking and the various types of fuels used in the investigations of this phenomenon. According to this report, the spontaneous ignition of hydrocarbons doped with oxygen follows the logarithmic law within a certain temperature range, but not above 920 degrees K. Having extended the scope of investigations to prove hydrocarbons, the curves of the mixtures burned by air should then be established by progressive replacement of pure iso-octane with heptane. Pentane was also examined in this report.

Gasification and Techno-Economic Analysis of High-Impact Biomass Feedstocks for the Synthesis of High-Octane Gasoline

Five economically advantaged biomass feedstocks identified in the US Department of Energy's 2016 Billion Ton Study were gasified and the syngas reformed at the bench scale to study the feedstock price-performance relationship. The distribution of reformed syngas compositions, heating values, and yields were similar across the different feedstocks and blends thereof, which ranged from inexpensive residual wastes to more expensive and higher quality biomass, revealing that feedstock performance was mostly insensitive to its price. Custom blended feedstocks produced syngas with characteristics resembling linear combinations of syngas from single-component feedstocks, supporting the ability to customize and predict blended properties based on single-feedstock data. A techno-economic analysis of specific feedstock costs for producing high-octane gasoline showed that miscanthus and forest residues were the most cost-effective with gas yields consistent with experimental gasification data. A field-to-wheels life-cycle assessment of greenhouse gas emissions showed that forest residues was the most environmentally benign feedstock of those studied.

Octane hyperboosting in fuel blends

The present invention relates, in part, to fuel mixtures and methods of preparing such mixtures. In particular, the mixture includes an alkenol additive that provides octane boosting.
