Studying 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − photoproduction beyond Pomeron exchange

Forward photoproduction of 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − pairs with invariant mass of the order of 𝑚 𝜌 ∼770 MeV is traditionally attributed to Pomeron exchange. Based on a detailed analysis of the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer photoproduction data collected at photon energies below 4 GeV, it is shown from a study of the angular moments that the dynamics of two-pion photoproduction for |𝑡| ≳ 0.5 GeV 2 cannot be explained by Pomeron exchange alone. This motivates the development of a new theoretical model of two-pion photoproduction which incorporates both two-pion and pion-nucleon resonant contributions. After fitting free parameters, the model provides an excellent description of the low moments of the angular distribution measured at CLAS and enables an assessment of the relative contributions of particular production mechanisms and an interpretation of the various features of the data in terms of these mechanisms.

Observation of the p η ' Cusp in the New Precise Beam Asymmetry Σ Data for γ p → p η

Data on the beam asymmetry Σ in the photoproduction of η mesons off protons are reported for tagged photon energies from 1130 to 1790 MeV (mass range from W = 1748 MeV to W = 2045 MeV). The data cover the full solid angle that allows for a precise moment analysis. For the first time, a strong cusp effect in a polarization observable has been observed that is an effect of a branch-point singularity at the pη' threshold [E γ = 1447 MeV (W = 1896 MeV)]. Here, the latest BnGa partial wave analysis includes the new beam asymmetry data and yields a strong indication for the N(1895)1/2 – nucleon resonance, demonstrating the importance of including all singularities for a correct determination of partial waves and resonance parameters.

Insight into emergence of hadron mass from N * electroexcitation amplitudes

The emergence of hadron mass represents one of the most challenging and still open problems in contemporary hadron physics. The results on the nucleon resonance electroexcitation amplitudes available from the CLAS data on πN and π + π – p electroproduction analyzed within the continuum Schwinger method open up a new avenue for gaining insight into the strong interaction dynamics that are responsible for the generation of the dominant part of hadron mass. Future prospects of these studies in experiments of the 12 GeV era with CLAS12 and after a potential increase of the CEBAF energy up to 22 GeV will offer a unique opportunity to explore the full range of distances where the dominant part of hadron mass and N* structure emerge from QCD.

Production cross sections for Lee-Wick massive electromagnetic bosons and for spin-zero and spin-one W bosons at high energies.

Production cross sections for three types of hypothetical particles are calculated in the presented paper. Several (Z, Z') cases were studied corresponding to elastic scattering off protons and neutrons (either free or embedded within a Fermi sea), coherent scattering off a nucleus, and inelastic scattering off a proton (in which case Z' denotes a nucleon resonance or hadronic system in the continuum). Detailed structure-function data are used to improve the accuracy of the inelastic scattering calculation. Results of calculations are given for beam energies between 50 and 10,000 GeV, and masses between 5 and 40 GeV for the massive Lee-Wick spin-1 boson. Cross sections were computed for resonant and semiweak processes. The production cross section of spin-zero weak intermediate bosons was found to be at least one order of magnitude smaller than for spin-1 weak bosons in nearly all regions of interest. The production cross section of spin-zero weak intermediate bosons for inelastic scattering off protons compares with that for elastic scattering in the regions of interest. In the case of massive spin-1 bosons and spin-1 weak intermediates, the main contribution to total production cross section off protons is elastic.

Eta Meson Production in Proton-Proton and Nuclear Collisions

Total cross sections for eta meson production in proton - proton collisions are calculated. The eta meson is mainly produced via decay of the excited nucleon resonance at 1535 MeV. A scalar quantum field theory is used to calculate cross sections, which also include resonance decay. Comparison between theory and experiment is problematic near threshold when resonance decay is not included. When the decay is included, the comparison between theory and experiment is much better.

Measurement of H(e,e’) and D(e,e’) Cross-Sections for Bloom-Gilman Quark-Hadron Duality Study

The E12-10-002 experiment which ran in 2018 in Hall C at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility measured the inclusive electron scattering cross-sections for hydrogen and deuterium. This was the first experiment conducted with the new Super High-Momentum Spectrometer and accompanying instrumentation. These measurements extend the previous Hall C measurements up to Q2 = 16 GeV2. This dissertation presents the analyses of the new detectors and shows the preliminary results for F2 structure function and the study of quark-hadron duality in the four nucleon-resonance regions.

Hadron spectroscopy of pseudoscalar and vector meson photoproduction using linearly polarised photons at CLAS

The field of hadron spectroscopy is informed by experiments which study excited states of the nucleon by detecting the decay products following excitation with a hadronic, leptonic or electromagnetic probe. Experiments using a polarised beam of photons provide an important contribution to the world data. This thesis describes the analysis of data from one such experiment, the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory, Virginia, USA. In the experiment, an incident beam of electrons passes through a diamond radiator producing a linearly polarised photon beam of energy from 1.1 to 2.1 GeV on a liquid hydrogen target. The analysis method and results for two reaction channels are presented. In the first analysis, the polarisation observables {?, P, T, Ox, Oz} for the reaction ??? p ? K0 S ?+ are extracted simultaneously using likelihood sampling with Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo. The results are presented as angular distributions (cos ?K0S) for bins in photon energy E? for a total of 21 bins. The values extracted for T , Ox and Oz are a first measurement of these quantities for this reaction and the beam asymmetry (?) measurement supplements the one previous measurement for this quantity and extends the energy range over which it has been extracted. The measurement of the recoil polarisation, P, is consistent with previous measurements. In a second analysis, the spin density matrix elements (SDMEs) for ? p ? p ? are extracted using similar analysis techniques. The results are presented as angular distributions (cos ?? ) for bins in photon energy E? for a total of 24 bins. This work is the first to extract all nine SDMEs for the full angular range of the ? meson production. A comparison is made to the predictions of the Vector Meson Dominance (VMD) model and the results provide evidence for contributing processes other than VMD, particularly at more backward angles of the ? meson production. The data also indicate non-helicity conserving process in both the s-channel and the t-channel. The results from the first analysis have been passed to the Juelich-Bonn theory group and the effect of including the new data within their dynamical coupled channel model is described. Several nucleon resonances are affected and the impact on the pole positions, widths and photon decay amplitudes of the affected resonances is described.

Elastic and resonance structures of the nucleon from the hadronic tensor in lattice QCD: Implications for neutrino-nucleon scattering and hadron physics

We compute the Euclidean hadronic tensor from charge density operators and extract elastic and resonance structures by employing exponential fits to the four-point function correlator, as well as a Bayesian reconstruction inverse algorithm to obtain the corresponding spectral density for qualitative comparison. We present the determination of the nucleon’s Sachs electric form factor using the hadronic tensor formalism and verify that it is consistent with that from the conventional three-point function calculation. Beyond the elastic peak, we observe a structure located approximately 0.5–0.7 GeV above the nucleon mass in the Bayesian reconstruction. This structure is interpreted as a mixture of the Roper resonance [𝑁⁡(1440)], and states with both positive and negative parities in this mass region, as well as multihadron states. Assuming the observed structure is dominated by 𝐽 𝑃 = 1/2 ± states, we extract the transition electric form factor 𝐺$^*_𝐸$⁡(𝑄 2 ) and the corresponding longitudinal helicity amplitude 𝑆 1/2 ⁡(𝑄 2 ), and compare them with those determined from the CLAS experimental data of nucleon-to-Roper transition. Although fitting to the four-point correlation function or using the inverse algorithm does not resolve individual resonances, it nevertheless enables the determination of total inclusive lepton–nucleon scattering cross sections in appropriate energy bins. This lattice QCD calculation presents the first major step toward studying the inclusive 𝑁 → 𝑋 contributions within the hadronic tensor formalism.

Low-energy pion-nucleon scattering and the Δ resonance in lattice QCD

We report on our investigation of low-energy pion-nucleon scattering from lattice QCD with Wilson type fermions. Our focus is on the isospin I = 3/2 channel, which couples to the Delta resonance. We discuss our calculations aiming at the extraction of the Delta resonance mass, width and effective coupling at pion mass 250 MeV, using the Lüscher finite-volume method to extract the phase shift δ J=3/2,l=1 .

Polarization observables in double neutral pion photoproduction

Abstract Measurements of target asymmetries and double-polarization observables for the reaction "Equation missing"<#comment/>are reported. The data were taken with the CBELSA/TAPS experiment at the ELSA facility (Bonn University) using the Bonn frozen-spin butanol ($$\hbox {C}_4\hbox {H}_9$$ C 4 H 9 OH) target, which provided transversely polarized protons. Linearly polarized photons were produced via bremsstrahlung off a diamond crystal. The data cover the photon energy range from "Equation missing"<#comment/>to "Equation missing"<#comment/>and nearly the complete angular range. The results have been included in the BnGa partial wave analysis. Experimental results and the fit agree very well. Observed systematic differences in the branching ratios for decays of "Equation missing"<#comment/>and$${\varDelta ^*}$$ Δ ∗ resonances are attributed to the internal structure of these excited nucleon states. Resonances which can be assigned to SU(6)$$\times $$ × O(3) two-oscillator configurations show larger branching ratios to intermediate states with non-zero intrinsic orbital angular momenta than resonances assigned to one-oscillator configurations.

Photon induced $K\Lambda $ production on the proton at $E_{\gamma} < 3$ GeV

The associated photoproduction of $K\Lambda$ from the proton for $E_{\gamma} < 3$ GeV is studied using an isobar model in which the non-resonant contributions corresponding to $s$, $t$, $u$ channel diagrams are obtained from a non-linear sigma model with chiral SU(3) symmetry. The model also predicts a contact term and its coupling strength in a natural way to preserve gauge symmetry. The parameters used are the pion decay constant $f_{\pi}$, vector and axial vector current couplings of the baryon octet in terms of the symmetric and antisymmetric couplings $D$ and $F$. In the non-resonant sector, the model is almost parameter free except a common cut-off parameter $\Lambda_{B}$, to describe the hadronic form factors at the strong kaon-nucleon-hyperon($KN\Lambda$) vertices. In the resonance sector, contribution from the various nucleon resonances($R$) in the $s$ channel, hyperon resonances($Y^{*}$) in the $u$ channel, and the kaon resonances($K^{*}$ and $K_{1}$) in the $t$ channel, which are present in the PDG having spin $\le \frac{3}{2}$ and mass $<2$ GeV with significant branching ratio in $K\Lambda$ decay mode have been considered. In the case of the nucleon resonances($R$), the couplings $\gamma NR$ at the electromagnetic vertices are determined in terms of the helicity amplitudes and the $RK\Lambda$ couplings at the strong vertices are determined by the partial decay width of the resonances($R$) decaying to $K\Lambda$. The strong and the electromagnetic couplings of $u$ and $t$ channel resonances are fitted to reproduce the experimental data of CLAS and SAPHIR. The numerical results are presented for the total and differential scattering cross sections and are compared with the available experimental data from CLAS and SAPHIR as well as with some of the recent theoretical models.

Measurement of N* Cross-Sections from Single-Pion Electroproduction at low Q 2

Measurements of nucleon electroexcitation resonance cross-sections give unique insight into the dynamics of the strong interaction and our knowledge of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The analysis of exclusive electroproduction data is an important tool in understanding the structure of the nucleon and its excited states. Exclusive channels give a clear way to extract the desired resonant contributions from non-resonant contributions. A gap in the helicity amplitudes extracted from single-pion cross-section data exists for virtual photon momentum transfers (Q 2 ) in the range of 1- 2 GeV 2 . Using data collected by the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) detector with a beam energy of 4.8 GeV, the reaction channel y*r → nπ + is used in this study to investigate the kinematic region covering W=[1.1,1.82)GeV and Q 2 = [1.1,3.5)GeV 2 . This work expands on the previous kinematic coverage for charged single-pion electroproduction and increases the angular coverage of previously extracted kinematic bins.

Single-nucleon knockout cross sections for reactions producing resonance states at or beyond the drip line

Single-nucleon knockout cross sections from fast secondary beams of the proton-drip-line nuclei 9 C, 13 O, and 17 Ne on a 9 Be target have been studied with emphasis on the production of resonance states. These states were identified by their invariant mass, and resonances with two-, three-, and five-body exit channels were examined. The measured cross sections for these states were compared with eikonal-model predictions using shell-model or variational Monte Carlo spectroscopic factors. The experimental yields were found to be suppressed relative to the model predictions, especially when a well-bound neutron or proton is removed. This suppression exceeds that found systematically in measured inclusive cross sections to particle-bound final states. In neutron knockout from 9 C and 13 O projectiles, this suppression of the unbound ground-state residuals yield is a factor of two to three times larger than that found in the bound final-state studies. Modifications to the structure of these systems due to coupling of the shell-model configurations to the continuum is expected to contribute to this extra suppression, especially when the final state is a near-threshold resonance. Furthermore, other considerations including the role of nuclear dynamics may be required to explain all the observed trends.

Preliminary searches for spin-dependent interactions using sidebands of nuclear spin-precession signals

Various theories beyond the Standard Model predict new particles with masses in the sub-eV range with very weak couplings to ordinary matter. A new P-odd and T-odd interaction between polarized and unpolarized nucleons proportional to s⃗⋅r̂ is one such possibility, where r⃗=rr̂ is the spatial vector connecting the nucleons, and s⃗ is the spin of the polarized nucleon. Such an interaction involving a scalar coupling gsN at one vertex and a pseudoscalar coupling gpn at the polarized nucleon vertex can be induced by the exchange of spin-0 pseudoscalar bosons. We describe a new technique to search for interactions of this form and present the first measurements of this type. We show that future improvements to this technique can improve the laboratory upper bound on the product gsNgpn by two orders of magnitude for interaction ranges at the 100 micron scale.
