Investigation of competitive sorption and plasticization of hyperaged CANAL ladder polymers for acid gas purification

Identifying membrane materials that have exceptional separation performance and stability to complex CO 2 -containing mixtures is a pressing topic in separation science. In this work, the membrane separation performance for a recently discovered class of contorted polymers synthesized via catalytic arene-norbornene annulation (CANAL) polymerization is presented. These CANAL polymers achieve high CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 68 after physical aging (up to ∼1 year), which significantly augments the size-sieving capabilities of the membranes. Binary CO 2 /CH 4 and ternary H 2 S/CO 2 /CH 4 testing result in a 41 % and 50 % enhancement in selectivities, respectively, for hyperaged (∼1 year) contorted CANAL polymers, highlighting their size-sieving capabilities. The remarkably high CO 2 /CH 4 mixed-gas and combined acid gas (CAG, (CO 2 +H 2 S)/CH 4 ) selectivities of 88 and 95, respectively, for CANAL-Me-S 5 F in particular surpass both the 2018 CO 2 /CH 4 mixed-gas and CAG upper bounds. Performance stability was also investigated for high concentrations of CO 2 , revealing a reduction in CO 2 /CH 4 mixed-gas selectivity without compromising CO 2 permeability, suggesting strong sorption of CO 2 but minimal plasticization effects for short testing periods. In addition, time-dependent plasticization shows negligible effects on CO 2 /CH 4 mixed-gas selectivity despite an increase in CO 2 permeability when exposed to high concentrations of plasticizing CO 2 over an extended period of 170 h. This study provides valuable insights into hyperaged CANAL polymers and their performance in practical industrial processes.

Ultra-selective CANAL Polymers for Hydrogen-based Membrane Separations after Long-Term Aging

Hydrogen is a critically important molecule in the chemicals and energy industries, driving the need for efficient purification technologies such as membrane-based separations. However, polymer membranes often suffer from physical aging, leading to decreased gas permeability over time. This study leverages the unique aging behavior of contorted microporous polymers, synthesized via catalytic arene-norbornene annulation (CANAL) polymerization, to enhance molecular sieving for H 2 separations. While prior studies demonstrated a 1000% increase in H 2 /CH 4 selectivity with minimal permeability loss over 150 days, we extend this investigation to hyperaged (∼1 year) CANAL polymers and evaluate their performance under various conditions of industrial relevance. We report a remarkable 6100% increase in H 2 /CH 4 selectivity and a 2400% improvement in H 2 /N 2 selectivity, with only a 55% decline in H 2 permeability. These membranes exhibit excellent long-term stability in binary and ternary gas mixtures and at elevated temperatures. Additionally, extended aging enhances H 2 /CO 2 selectivity beyond the 2008 upper bound due to improved size-sieving. High-temperature permeation experiments and grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations reveal that H 2 permeability increases from 570 to 3500 barrer as the temperature rises from 35 °C to 190 °C, while H 2 /CO 2 selectivity declines from 14 to 3 due to the higher diffusion activation energy of CO 2 . Despite this tradeoff, hyperaged CANAL membranes maintain performance beyond the 200 °C upper bound, having selectivity–permeability performance comparable to many state-of-the-art membranes for H 2 /CO 2 separations. As a result, this study highlights the robustness and industrial viability of ultra-selective CANAL polymers for hydrogen purification, contributing to advancements in clean energy and sustainable separation technologies.

Design of robust and versatile hydrocarbon-based single-ion-conducting polymer electrolytes

Hydrocarbon-based polymers offer several advantages, including lower environmental impacts, cost effectiveness, and the ability to finely tune properties. Here, we have developed trifluoromethanesulfonimide (TFSI)-functionalized poly(norbornene) (PNB) polymers utilizing a specifically designed oxa-Michael addition of a vinyl TFSI anion to an alcohol. Our results reveal that PNB-TFSI derivatives exhibit superior thermal stability and mechanical robustness compared with Nafion. The optimized PNB-TFSI-H-48 polymer (IEC 1.86 mmol/g) exhibits equivalent performance to Nafion as an anode ionomer in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell. Exchanging the counter ion to Li + enables PNB-TFSI to be used for Li-ion battery applications. Propylene carbonate plasticized PNB-TFSI derivatives achieve an Li-ion conductivity of over 10 −5 S/cm at 30°C. This Li polymer electrolyte exhibits excellent electrochemical stability (5 V vs. Li + /Li) and good cycling in a Li symmetric cell. These results highlight the potential and rational design of PNB-TFSI polymers for next-generation energy storage and conversion technologies.

Scalable Frontal Oligomerization: Insights from Advanced Mass Analysis

Linear oligomers of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) are reactive precursors for thermoplastic and thermoset materials. Unlike the foul-smelling parent monomer, oligomers composed of DCPD are odorless. With appropriate modification of the end-group or backbone chemistry, telechelic DCPD oligomers have potential utility as cross-linkers and as macromonomer precursors for block and graft copolymers. Most existing methods to produce oligo-DCPD, however, require solvent, are relatively slow, and necessitate air-free techniques. Here we show that frontal ring-opening metathesis oligomerization (FROMO) of neat DCPD and other norbornene derivatives rapidly generates hundreds of grams of material in minutes with catalyst loadings of 0.5 mM. This energy-efficient catalytic process utilizes the heat generated by the reaction to self-propagate oligomerization throughout the liquid monomer. FROMO employs a terminal olefin (e.g., styrene) in which a cross-metathesis reaction (i.e., chain transfer) competes with ring-opening metathesis (i.e., propagation). Kendrick mass analysis enables rapid identification and assignment of all the chain-end types present and quantifies the degree of branching resulting from the infrequent cyclopentene ring-opening reaction. This analytical technique also detects oligomer species derived from trace impurities in the monomer or chain-transfer agent that are otherwise difficult to observe with other characterization methods. Here, the obtained oligomers possess well-defined chain-ends and molecular weight distributions.

Hydrogen-Bonding Bottlebrush Networks: Self-Healing Materials from Super-Soft to Stiff

The impact of polymer architecture on network dynamics and self-healing is presented using bottlebrushes containing side chains that are end-functionalized with 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidinone (UPy). The synthesis of these materials is straightforward through a three-step process: (1) synthesizing rubbery poly(4-methylcaprolactone) macromonomers (p4MCL–OH) with a norbornene-based initiator, (2) functionalizing the terminal hydroxyl group with UPy–isocyanate (p4MCL–UPy), and (3) statistically copolymerizing p4MCL–OH and p4MCL–UPy via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) to form hydrogen-bonding bottlebrushes having a fraction (p) of side chains functionalized with UPy. Attaching UPy to the free end of bottlebrush side chains dilutes the impact of friction from complementary UPy interactions on segmental dynamics, leading to a much weaker dependence of the glass-transition temperature (T g ) on p than observed in linear analogues, while the activation energy to dissociate UPy–UPy bonds (41–47 kJ/mol) remains mostly unchanged. Longer side chains result in a competition between reducing T g and inducing entanglements that influence hydrogen-bonded network dynamics. Increasing the backbone length extends the sticky Rouse region without affecting the network modulus (G x ) or UPy–UPy dissociation time (τ s ). Gx scales linearly with p and ranges from 27 kPa to 1.6 MPa, while τs remains nearly constant in contrast to linear telechelic ionomers, implying a similar self-healability across bottlebrush networks containing different amounts of UPy. Furthermore, these stretchable networks with p ≤ 0.25 undergo self-healing upon repeated rupture and melt pressing at ≤100 °C while retaining similar tensile properties. In summary, decorating bottlebrush polymers with hydrogen bonds creates opportunities to independently manipulate associative network dynamics and mechanical moduli.

One Step Block-like Copolymers from an Upcycled Monomer Using Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

Block-like copolymers can be readily synthesized in one step using monomers with widely separated reactivity ratios. Here, we show that trans,trans,trans-1,5,9-cyclododecatriene (CDT), produced from polybutadiene via cyclodepolymerization (CDP), undergoes gradient copolymerization via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) with a selected norbornene monomer to produce a block-like copolymer that exhibits bulk nanophase separation and excellent thermomechanical performance. These data highlight a new ROMP copolymerization system with a sharp compositional drift and introduce a simple pathway to convert waste plastic into a valuable building block for high-value thermoplastic materials.

Substituted polynorbornene membranes: a modular template for targeted gas separations

Polynorbornenes are ideal materials for systematic structure–property investigations designed to correlate gas-transport properties to polymer structure. The modular nature of norbornene-based systems provides a facile route towards the synthesis of diverse polymeric materials. Though many valuable correlations between gas-permeability and polynorbornene structure have been summarized in a prior review (2017), many of these efforts focused heavily on the design of materials with high permeabilities. More recently, the design of next-generation polynorbornene membranes has shifted toward the development of materials that are highly selective for multiple targeted gas separations. Since 2017, tremendous progress has been realized in the preparation of stable and highly selective polynorbornenes for membrane-based gas separations. Examples include polynorbornene derivatives that exhibit very high selectivity for CO 2 /N 2 and light hydrocarbon (e.g., C 3 +/C 1 ) separations, some of which exhibit gas separation performances that approach or exceed the 2008 upper bound. In this work, we summarize prior findings, present recent developments in the field of advanced polynorbornene membrane materials for targeted gas separations, and provide an outlook for the future of this field of research.

Design, synthesis, and characterization of vinyl-addition polynorbornenes with tunable thermal properties

Unfunctionalized vinyl-addition polynorbornene (VAPNB) possesses many outstanding properties such as high thermal, chemical, and oxidative stability. These features make VAPNB a promising candidate for many engineering applications. However, VAPNB has a small service window between its glass transition temperature (T g ) and decomposition temperature (T d ), and it cannot be readily processed in a melt state. In this work, we demonstrate that the service window of VAPNBs can be tailored through the use of norbornene monomers bearing alkyl, aryl, and aryl ether substituents. The vinyl addition homopolymerization and copolymerization of these functionalized norbornyl-based monomers yielded VAPNBs with high T' g s (>150 °C) and large service windows (T d –T g > 100 °C), which are comparable to other commercial engineering thermoplastics. To further establish the feasibility of melt processing, a functionalized VAPNB material with T g = 209 °C and a service window of 170 °C was successfully extruded and molded into bars. Subsequent characterization of the bars by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) revealed only minor signs of polymer degradation. Furthermore, these studies suggest that substituted VAPNBs could be developed into a new class of engineering thermoplastics that is compatible with workhorse melt processing techniques such as extrusion and injection molding, as well as emerging techniques such as extrusion-based 3D printing.

Tricyclononenes and tricyclononadienes as efficient monomers for controlled ROMP: understanding structure–propagation rate relationships and enabling facile post-polymerization modification

Grubbs 3rd-generation (G3) pre-catalyst-initiated ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) remains an indispensable tool in the polymer chemist's toolbox. Tricyclononenes (TCN) and tricyclononadienes (TCND) represent under-explored classes of monomers for ROMP that have the potential to both advance fundamental knowledge (e.g., structure-polymerization kinetics relationships) and serve as practical tools for the polymer chemist (e.g., post-polymerization functionalization). In this work, a library of TCN and TCND imides, monoesters, and diesters, along with their exo-norbornene counterparts, were synthesized to compare their behaviors in G3-initiated ROMP. Real-time 1 H NMR was used to study their polymerization kinetics; propagation rates ( k p ) were extracted for each monomer. To understand the relationships between monomer structure and ROMP propagation rates, density functional theory methods were used to calculate a variety of electronic and steric parameters for each monomer. While electronic parameters (e.g., HOMO energy levels) correlated positively with the measured k p values, steric parameters generally gave improved correlations, which indicates that monomer size and shape are better predictors for k p than electronic parameters for this data set. Furthermore, the TCND diester—which contains an electron-deficient cyclobutene that is resistant to ROMP—and its polymer p(TCND) are shown to be highly reactive toward DBU-catalyzed conjugate addition reactions with thiols, providing a protecting- and activating-group free strategy for post-polymerization modification.

Ultrafast disruptive probing: Simultaneously keeping track of tens of reaction pathways

Ultrafast science depends on different implementations of the well-known pump–probe method. Here, we provide a formal description of ultrafast disruptive probing, a method in which the probe pulse disrupts a transient species that may be a metastable ion or a transient state of matter. Disruptive probing has the advantage of allowing for simultaneous tracking of the yield of tens of different processes. Our presentation includes a numerical model and experimental data on multiple products resulting from the strong-field ionization of two different molecules, partially deuterated methanol and norbornene. The correlated enhancement and depletion signals between all the different fragmentation channels offer comprehensive information on photochemical reaction pathways. In combination with ion imaging and/or coincidence momentum imaging or as complementary to atom-specific probing or ultrafast diffraction methods, disruptive probing is a particularly powerful tool for the study of strong-field laser–matter interactions.

Reversed dynamics of bottlebrush polymers with stiff backbone and flexible side chains

The segmental dynamics of bottlebrush polymers with a stiff backbone and flexible side chains has been studied. The segmental relaxation time of side chains attached to a flexible backbone follows the same trend as linear polymers, an increase with the increasing molecular weight, but is slowed down compared to their linear counterparts. Theoretical work predicts a reversal of the molecular weight dependence of the relaxation time for stiff backbones. As a model for a stiff-g-flexible system, bottlebrushes with poly(norbornene) backbone and poly(propylene oxide) side chains, PNB-g-PPO, at a uniform grafting density have been synthesized and characterized with quasi-elastic neutron scattering. Indeed, the anticipated reversed dynamics was found. Increasing the side chain length decreases the segmental relaxation time. This indicates the importance of the characteristics of the grafting site beyond a simplified picture of an attached side chain. The mean square displacement shows a similar trend with longer side chains exhibiting a larger displacement.

Videos of Chemically Activated Frontal Polymerization of Thermosets

Video recordings of the frontal ring-opening metathesis polymerization (FROMP) of thermoset polymer specimens in 10mm glass test tubes were collected in order to measure the front speed resulting from varied front initiation methods. Maximum front temperature was also measured. Polymerization resins comprised of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) with 5 wt% 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene (ENB) added, grubbs’ second generation catalyst, and tributyl phosphite (TBP) inhibitor (8000:1:1 monomer:initiator:inhibitor ratio). Polymerization fronts were triggered using concentrated solutions of grubbs’ third generation catalyst in various solvents.

A review of processable high temperature resistant addition-type laminating resins

An important finding that resulted from research that was conducted to develop improved ablative resins was the discovery of a novel approach to synthesize processable high temperature resistant polymers. Low molecular weight polyimide prepolymers end-capped with norbornene groups were polymerized into thermo-oxidatively stable modified polyimides without the evolution of void producing volatile materials. This paper reviews basic studies that were performed using model compounds to elucidate the polymerization mechanism of the so-called addition-type polyimides. The fabrication and properties of polyimide/graphite fiber composites using A-type polyimide prepolymer as the matrix are described. An alternate method for preparing processable A-type polyimides by means of in situ polymerization of monomeric reactants on the fiber reinforcement is also described. Polyimide/graphite fiber composite performance at elevated temperatures is presented for A-type polyimides.

Synthesis of perfluoroalkylene aromatic diamines

Analogues of methylene dianilines were synthesized, in which the methylene group between the two aromatic nuclei was replaced by various perfluoroalkylene linkage. The hydrolytic thermal, and thermal oxidative stabilities of PMR Polyimides derived from these diamines were determined. Three types of PMR Polyimide discs were fabricated from the dimethyl ester of 3,3', 4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic acid, the methyl ester of 5-norbornene-2,3-dicarboxylic acid, and one of the following three diamines: methyl dianiline, 1,3-bis(4-aminophenyl)hexafluoropropane, and 2,2-bis(4-aminophenyl)hexafluoropropane.
