Sub-Daily Northern Hemisphere Ionospheric Maps Using the IGS GPS Network

Ionospheric total electron content (TEC) data derived from dual-frequency GPS signals from 30 globally distributed IGS network sites are fit to a simple ionospheric shell model, yielding, simultaneously, values for the satellite and receiver biases, and a map of the ionosphere in the northern hemisphere every 12 hours during the period of Jan. 1-15, 1993. RMS residuals of 2-3 TEC units are observed over the 20-80 degree latitude band. Various systematic errors affecting the TEC estimates are discussed. The capability of using these global maps to produce ionosphere calibrations for sites at which no GPS data are available is investigated.

Solution‐Like Water Transport Across Molecular to Macroscopic Length Scales in Crosslinked Poly(Ethylene Glycol Diacrylate) Networks With Tailored Sidechains

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)‐based materials, like PEG‐diacrylate (PEGDA), are prized for their hydrophilic, inert properties, and leveraged in hydrogels and as membrane mimics. While network chemistry is often tuned for selective transport and antifouling, fundamental understanding of water dynamics at the network surface and the impact on bulk transport is limited. We utilize Overhauser dynamic nuclear polarization (ODNP) to measure nanoscale water diffusivity near a tethered spin label at the water‐polymer surface and compare it to bulk water diffusivity from pulsed field gradient (PFG) NMR. Via active ester chemistry, spin labels and varied sidechain chemistries are introduced, modulating network hydrophilicity. Tuning network hydration through crosslinker content and functional groups further impacts water diffusivity. Results show rapid nanoscale water transport at the polymer surface, reflecting network volumetric water content, with further modulation by sidechain functionality. These findings demonstrate PEGDA's utility as a membrane mimic and the critical impact of network chemistry on water transport.

Compatibilization Strategy and Mechanism for Co-stabilizing Commingled Plastics and Pyrolyzed Rubber in Asphalt

Hot mix asphalt mixture is considered the ideal approach to reuse waste plastics in high-value applications because of its very high amount of usage in highway construction. However, the differences in polarity and density between polymers and asphalt lead to polymer coalescence and therefore the poor storage stability of modified asphalt. These challenges are exalted when recycling commingled plastics. This study introduced an innovative compatibilization strategy and mechanism for co-stabilizing commingled plastics and pyrolyzed rubber in asphalt. Commingled plastics were first grafted with maleic anhydride for surface activation, followed by reactive kneading with pyrolyzed rubber and crosslinking agent to form an integrated thermoplastic elastomer (ITPE) for asphalt modification. The mechanical, thermal, and interfacial behaviors of the ITPE were evaluated through tensile testing, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The storage stability and rheological properties of the modified binder blends were evaluated through the cigar tube test and dynamic shear rheometer testing. Results demonstrated a successful formation of imide bonds in the ITPE, which can improve the strength, ductility, and thermal stability of rubber–plastic composites. Appropriate utilization of crosslinking agents can improve both rutting and fatigue resistance of ITPE-modified asphalt with good storage stability because of the co-existence of rigid plastic and soft rubbery regimes and the formation of a crosslink network. Furthermore, excessive content of crosslinker led to severe phase separation and reduced storage stability of modified binder blends. Extra crosslinker tended to float in asphalt because of its low density and caused an excessive formation of the crosslink network in the top section of the asphalt.

Information Content of Aerosol Retrievals in the Sunglint Region

We exploit quantitative metrics to investigate the information content in retrievals of atmospheric aerosol parameters (with a focus on single-scattering albedo), contained in multi-angle and multi-spectral measurements with sufficient dynamical range in the sunglint region. The simulations are performed for two classes of maritime aerosols with optical and microphysical properties compiled from measurements of the Aerosol Robotic Network. The information content is assessed using the inverse formalism and is compared to that deriving from observations not affected by sunglint. We find that there indeed is additional information in measurements containing sunglint, not just for single-scattering albedo, but also for aerosol optical thickness and the complex refractive index of the fine aerosol size mode, although the amount of additional information varies with aerosol type.

All-sky aerosol direct radiative effects at the ARM SGP site

All-sky aerosol direct radiative effect (DRE) was estimated for the first time at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Southern Great Plains site using multi-year ground-based observations. The NASA Langley Fu-Liou radiation model was employed. Observed inputs for the radiation model include aerosol and cloud vertical extinction profile from Raman lidar; spectral aerosol optical depth, single-scattering albedo, and asymmetry factor from Aerosol Robotic Network; cloud water content profiles from radars; temperature and water vapor profiles from radiosondes; and surface shortwave spectral albedo from radiometers. A cloudy-sky radiative closure experiment was performed. The relative mean differences between modeled and observed surface downwelling shortwave total fluxes were 6% (7%) for transparent (opaque) cloudy-skies. The estimated annual mean all-sky aerosol DRE is -2.13±0.54W m -2 at the top of atmosphere (TOA) and -5.95±0.87 W m -2 at the surface, compared to -3.00±0.58 W m -2 AND -6.85±1.00 W m -2 , respectively, under clear-sky conditions. The seasonal cycle of all-sky aerosol DRE is similar to that of the clear-sky, except with secondary influences of the clouds: The cloud radiative effect is strongest (most negative) in the spring, which reduces the all-sky aerosol DRE. The relative uncertainties in all-sky aerosol DRE due to measurement errors are generally comparable to those in clear-sky conditions except for the aerosol single-scattering albedo. Finally, the TOA all-sky aerosol DRE relative uncertainty due to aerosol single-scattering albedo uncertainty is larger than that in clear-sky, leading to a larger total relative uncertainty. The measurement errors in cloud properties have small effects on the all-sky aerosol DRE.

High-order neural models for error correcting code

The decoding and error-correction of data transmitted over a noisy channel is in principle equivalent to the operation of a neural network performing as a content-addressable memory. For a successful application, however, the neural network has to be capable of storing arbitrary words, and it has to be guaranteed that the stored words represent the only stable attractors of the memory. This paper presents a novel high-order neural network architecture that has these characteristics. The analog nature of the network can be used to perform soft-decision decoding with any block code. The performance in terms of postdecoding bit error rate versus SNR is demonstrated for two exemplary block codes. The comparison with a conventional decoding algorithm for a (15,5) cyclic redundancy code shows, for example, that the bit error rate at 7dB SNR can be decreased by two orders of magnitude.

Electronic device aspects of neural network memories

The basic issues related to the electronic implementation of the neural network model (NNM) for content addressable memories are examined. A brief introduction to the principles of the NNM is followed by an analysis of the information storage of the neural network in the form of a binary connection matrix and the recall capability of such matrix memories based on a hardware simulation study. In addition, materials and device architecture issues involved in the future realization of such networks in VLSI-compatible ultrahigh-density memories are considered. A possible space application of such devices would be in the area of large-scale information storage without mechanical devices.

Enriching the Twitter Stream Increasing Data Mining Yield and Quality Using Machine Learning

Social media data streams are important sources of real-time and historical global information for science applications. At the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC), we are exploring the Twitter data stream for its potential in augmenting the validation program of NASA Earth science missions, specifically the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission. We have implemented a tweet processing infrastructure that outputs classified precipitation tweets. Inputs are "passive" tweets, along with a smaller number of tweets from "active" participants, i.e., those knowingly contributing to our effort. The "active" tweets, presumably of higher quality, enrich the Twitter stream. "Active" sources include data scraped from other social media (e.g., public Facebook posts) and data from existing crowdsourcing programs (e.g., mPING reports). In addition, there is likely relevant precipitation information in images and documents that are the end points of links often included in tweets. Information derived from these "active" sources could then be tweeted into the Twitter stream, thus enriching its quality. The objective of our current work is to mine these tweet linked images and documents, using neural networks, to increase the information content and quality related to precipitation. For images, we classified them as either precipitation-related or not. For training and validation, we used images obtained via the Google custom search API. We created two models: (1) by training a simple Convolutional Neural Network and (2) by using transfer learning principles to adapt a pre-trained object recognition model. For documents, both those linked to tweets and the tweet contents, we trained Hierarchical Attention Networks to determine precipitation occurrence, type, and intensity. For training and validation, we used a keyword-filtered tweet data set labelled with ground truth data from Dark Sky (an API to retrieve weather-related labels) and the National Severe Storms Laboratory's Multi Radar/Multi-Sensor (MRMS) system. Our results demonstrated the efficacy of our machine learning approaches for enriching the Twitter stream, to derive information potentially useful for validation of earth science satellite data.

A Model for Effective Professional Development of Formal Science Educators

The Lunar Workshops for Educators (LWE) series was developed by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) education team in 2010 to provide professional development on lunar science and exploration concepts for grades 6-9 science teachers. Over 300 educators have been trained to date. The LWE model incorporates best practices from pedagogical research of science education, thoughtful integration of scientists and engineer subject matter experts for both content presentations and informal networking with educators, access to NASA-unique facilities, hands-on and data-rich activities aligned with education standards, exposure to the practice of science, tools for addressing common misconceptions, follow-up with participants, and extensive evaluation. Evaluation of the LWE model via pre- and post-assessments, daily workshop surveys, and follow-up surveys at 6-month and 1-year intervals indicate that the LWE are extremely effective in increasing educators' content knowledge, confidence in incorporating content into the classroom, understanding of the practice of science, and ability to address common student misconceptions. In order to address the efficacy of the LWE model for other science content areas, the Dynamic Response of Environments at Asteroids, the Moon, and moons of Mars (DREAM2) education team, funded by NASA's Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute, developed and ran a pilot workshop called Dream2Explore at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in June, 2015. Dream2Explore utilized the LWE model, but incorporated content related to the science and exploration of asteroids and the moons of Mars. Evaluation results indicate that the LWE model was effectively used for educator professional development on non-lunar content. We will present more detail on the LWE model, evaluation results from the Dream2Explore pilot workshop, and suggestions for the application of the model with other science content for robust educator professional development.

The developments in modifying functionality of lignin and its application in biocomposites

With the advancement of sustainable material innovations, renewable natural biopolymers are gradually replacing traditional metal and petroleum-based synthetic materials due to their environmental friendliness, biodegradability, and economic advantages. Lignin, the second most abundant natural aromatic polymer in the plant kingdom, has emerged as a key candidate raw material for the development of green polymer systems because of its unique phenylpropane unit network structure, high carbon content, and rich functional group characteristics. However, challenges such as the inherent structural complexity, chemical inertness, and uneven molecular weight distribution of lignin limit its direct application. By employing modification strategies such as chemical functionalization and physical regulation, researchers can precisely control its reactivity, thermal stability, and interfacial compatibility, enabling the preparation of high-performance lignin-based functional composites. Here, this paper systematically reviews the principles and methodological advancements in lignin's multi-dimensional modification technology. It analyzes the mechanisms by which various chemical and physical modification techniques enhance the mechanical properties, functional responsiveness, and environmental adaptability of materials, and discusses innovative applications in fields such as intelligent packaging, biomedical materials, and energy storage devices. Furthermore, this review addresses the key challenges encountered in the high-value transformation of lignin, with the aim of offering a theoretical framework and technical pathway for the transformative development of lignin from agricultural and forestry by-products to functional material platforms.

Structure-performance relationships in lignin-based transesterification vitrimers: The role of lignin structural features

Lignin has been hailed as an ideal renewable alternative for petrochemical-based prepolymers in material synthesis for a sustainable and circular economy, due to its abundant aromatic network and high carbon content. However, the properties and performance of lignin-derived macromolecules are strongly influenced by the lignin itself. While numerous studies have explored the impact of lignin content on the thermomechanical performance of lignin-based vitrimers, literature on how the inherent structural features of lignin affect these properties is scanty. In this study, hardwood organosolv lignin was fractionated in ethyl acetate, ethanol, and acetone to obtain lignin fractions with varying structural characteristics. These fractions were then modified through carboxylation and crosslinked with epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) at a hydroxyl to epoxy group ratio of 1:1 to produce lignin-based transesterification vitrimers (LVs). The thermal properties (i.e. glass transition temperature and thermal stability), tensile strength, storage modulus, and stress relaxation behavior of the LVs were studied and carefully related to the structural features of lignin. The results revealed a positive relationship between strong hydroxyl content in modified lignin and the tensile strength (5.10–9.71 MPa), storage modulus (1099.4 – 1372.8 MPa), crosslinking density, and stress relaxation of the LVs. Additionally, both the storage modulus and tensile strength exhibited a positive relationship with the ratio of rigid linkages in modified lignin, while lignin molecular weight was found to significantly impact the thermal properties of LVs (i.e Tg and thermal stability). This study not only highlights the valorization of lignin in vitrimer synthesis but also provide insights for designing lignin-based materials with tailored properties for specific applications.
