Early Solar Wind and Dynamo Magnetic Field Topology Predictions for (16) Psyche and Other Asteroids

Abstract Asteroid (16) Psyche is a metal‐rich body that might record an ancient coherent magnetization if some relict crust or mantle is preserved. Herein, we use magnetohydrodynamic simulations to predict (16) Psyche's field topology for several distinct pathways: (i) an early solar wind‐induced magnetization imparted after a larger body was impacted, forming the present‐day asteroid, (ii) a core dynamo magnetization imparted in an asteroid that is either presently largely intact or was a rubble pile, and (iii) magnetization in the turbulent solar nebula disk. For pathway (i) we find the field to be predominantly dipolar and spin axis‐aligned. For pathway (ii) we find the field to be either dipolar and spin axis‐misaligned, or highly multipolar. We also find that (iii) a field produced earlier before the solar nebula cleared, would be highly multipolar. In cases (i) and (ii) we also place constraints on the field strength. Simple detection of a magnetic field without constraining its topology and temporal variability would be insufficient to confirm a remanent source, due to the influence of the present‐day solar wind, electromagnetic induction, and (16) Psyche's high obliquity. For sufficiently strong fields however, the field topology and orientation may reveal key observable consequences of the nature and history of (16) Psyche. Our framework is also broadly applicable to the study of magnetic fields from other asteroids.

Gas phase synthesis of the C40 nano bowl C 40 H 10

Nanobowls represent vital molecular building blocks of end-capped nanotubes and fullerenes detected in combustion systems and in deep space such as toward the planetary nebula TC-1, but their fundamental formation mechanisms have remained elusive. By merging molecular beam experiments with electronic structure calculations, we reveal a complex chain of reactions initiated through the gas-phase preparation of benzocorannulene (C 24 H 12 ) via ring annulation of the corannulenyl radical (C 20 H 9 • ) by vinylacetylene (C 4 H 4 ) as identified isomer-selectively in situ via photoionization efficiency curves and photoion mass-selected threshold photoelectron spectra. In silico studies provided compelling evidence that the benzannulation mechanism can be expanded to pentabenzocorannulene (C 40 H 20 ) followed by successive cyclodehydrogenation to the C40 nanobowl (C 40 H 10 ) – a fundamental building block of buckminsterfullerene (C 60 ). This high-temperature pathway opens up isomer-selective routes to nanobowls via resonantly stabilized free-radical intermediates and ring annulation in circumstellar envelopes of carbon stars and planetary nebulae as their descendants eventually altering our insights of the complex chemistry of carbon in our Galaxy.

Size distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in space: an old new light on the 11.2/3.3 μm intensity ratio

The intensity ratio of the 11.2/3.3 μm emission bands is considered to be a reliable tracer of the size distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the interstellar medium (ISM). This paper describes the validation of the calculated intrinsic infrared (IR) spectra of PAHs that underlie the interpretation of the observed ratio. The comparison of harmonic calculations from the NASA Ames PAH IR spectroscopic database to gas-phase experimental absorption IR spectra reveals a consistent underestimation of the 11.2/3.3 μm intensity ratio by 34%. IR spectra based on higher level anharmonic calculations, on the other hand, are in very good agreement with the experiments. While there are indications that the 11.2/3.3 μm ratio increases systematically for PAHs in the relevant size range when using a larger basis set, it is unfortunately not yet possible to reliably calculate anharmonic spectra for large PAHs. Based on these considerations, we have adjusted the intrinsic ratio of these modes and incorporated this in an interstellar PAH emission model. This corrected model implies that typical PAH sizes in reflection nebulae such as NGC 7023 – previously inferred to be in the range of 50 to 70 carbon atoms per PAH are actually in the range of 40 to 55 carbon atoms. The higher limit of this range is close to the size of the C 60 fullerene (also detected in reflection nebulae), which would be in line with the hypothesis that, under appropriate conditions, large PAHs are converted into the more stable fullerenes in the ISM.

An accurate measurement of the spectral resolution of the JWST Near Infrared Spectrograph

The spectral resolution (R ≡ λ/Δλ) of spectroscopic data is crucial information for accurate kinematic measurements. In this letter we present a robust measurement of the spectral resolution of the JWST Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) in fixed slit (FS) and integral field spectroscopy (IFS) modes. Due to the similarity of the utilized slit dimension in the FS mode to that of the shutters in the multi-object spectroscopy (MOS) mode, our resolution measurements in the FS mode can also be used for the MOS mode in principle. We modeled H and He lines of the planetary nebula SMP LMC 58 using a Gaussian line spread function (LSF) to estimate the wavelength-dependent resolution for multiple disperser and filter combinations. We corrected for the intrinsic width of the planetary nebula’s H and He lines due to its expansion velocity by measuring it from a higher-resolution X-shooter spectrum. We find that NIRSpec’s in-flight spectral resolutions exceed the pre-launch estimates provided in the JWST User Documentation by 11–53% in the FS mode and by 1–24% in the IFS mode across the covered wavelengths. We recover the expected trend that the resolution increases with the wavelength within a configuration. The robust and accurate LSFs presented in this letter will enable high-accuracy kinematic measurements using NIRSpec for applications in cosmology and galaxy evolution.

Search for extended Lyman-α emission around 9k quasars at z = 2–3

ABSTRACT Enormous Lyα nebulae (ELANe) around quasars have provided unique insights into the formation of massive galaxies and their associations with super-massive black holes since their discovery. However, their detection remains highly limited. This paper introduces a systematic search for extended Lyα emission around 8683 quasars at z = 2.34–3.00 using a simple but very effective broad-band gri selection based on the Third Public Data Release of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program. Although the broad-band selection detects only bright Lyα emission (≳ 1 × 10−17 erg s−1cm−2 arcsec−2) compared with narrow-band imaging and integral field spectroscopy, we can apply this method to far more sources than such common approaches. We first generated continuum g-band images without contributions from Lyα emission for host and satellite galaxies using r- and i-bands. Then, we established Lyα maps by subtracting them from observed g-band images with Lyα emissions. Consequently, we discovered extended Lyα emission (with masked area >40 arcsec2) for 7 and 32 out of 366 and 8317 quasars in the Deep and Ultra-deep (35 deg2) and Wide (890 deg2) layers, parts of which may be potential candidates of ELANe. However, none of them seem to be equivalent to the largest ELANe ever found. We detected higher fractions of quasars with large nebulae around more luminous or radio-loud quasars, supporting previous results. Future applications to the forthcoming big data from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory will help us detect more promising candidates. The source catalogue and obtained Lyα properties for all the quasar targets are accessible as online material.

Dust from evolved stars: a pilot analysis of the AGB to PN transition

ABSTRACT We present a novel approach to address dust production by low- and intermediate-mass stars. We study the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase, during which the formation of dust takes place, from the perspective of post-AGB and planetary nebula (PN) evolutionary stage. Using results from stellar evolution and dust formation modelling, we interpret the spectral energy distribution of carbon-dust-rich sources currently evolving through different evolutionary phases, believed to descend from progenitors of similar mass and chemical composition. Comparing the results of different stages along the AGB to PNe transition, we can provide distinct insights on the amount of dust and gas released during the very late AGB phases. While the post-AGB traces the history of dust production back to the tip of the AGB phase, investigating the PNe is important to reconstruct the mass-loss process experienced after the last thermal pulse. The dust surrounding the post-AGB was formed soon after the tip of the AGB. The PNe dust-to-gas ratio is ∼10−3, 2.5 times smaller than what expected for the same initial mass star during the last AGB interpulse, possibly suggesting that dust might be destroyed during the PN phase. Measuring the amount of dust present in the nebula can constrain the capacity of the dust to survive the central star heating.

Compositional evidence for chondrule origins of low‐Ca pyroxenes in comet Wild 2 and a giant cluster IDP

Abstract A literature compilation of 1136 low‐Ca pyroxene compositions from chondrules from 12 primitive type 2–3 carbonaceous, ordinary and enstatite chondrite groups define unique regions on an Al 2 O 3 and Cr 2 O 3 diagram when compared to low‐Ca pyroxenes from equilibrated type 4‐6 chondrites. Measured compositions of 100 low‐Ca pyroxenes from comet Wild 2 and a giant cluster IDP of probable cometary origin are similar to each other and fall in the type 2–3 chondrite chondrule region suggesting that most of the pyroxenes likely formed in the solar nebula like conventional chondrules. The data imply that most low Ca‐pyroxenes from comet Wild 2 and the giant cluster IDP formed from igneous crystallization processes and did not experience significant thermal metamorphism, indicating that the low‐Ca pyroxenes were unlikely incorporated into large parent bodies prior to accretion in their respective comet bodies. An intriguing group of nine low‐Ca pyroxenes from comet Wild 2 with low Cr and Al that fall where type 4–6 chondrites are located are interpreted as products of condensation. The compositional data combined with previously measured oxygen isotopes on 17 low‐Ca pyroxenes support earlier conclusions that comet samples have links with carbonaceous, ordinary, and possibly enstatite chondrite groups. Our results provide additional evidence that comets accreted materials from multiple chondrule reservoirs throughout the solar nebula.

Results from the Advanced Scintillator Compton Telescope (ASCOT) Balloon Payload

The Advanced Scintillator Compton Telescope (ASCOT) is a medium-energy gamma-ray Compton telescope flown on NASA’s high-altitude scientific balloon from Palestine, TX on 5th July 2018. It uses commercially available highperformance scintillators like Cerium Bromide (CeBr3) and p-terphenyl along with compact readout devices - silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) - for an improved instrument response. ASCOT was built to address the existing need for observations in the gamma-ray energy range of 0.4 - 20 MeV. Operating stably throughout the mission, it reached an altitude of 120,000 ft and observed the Crab Nebula at MeV energies for ~5 hours. Built on the legacy of COMPTEL (onboard CGRO), along with the hardware advancement ASCOT also makes use of the Time-of-Flight (ToF) background rejection technique for effective imaging. Presented here is the Energy and ToF calibrated flight data with optimal data cuts (Earth Horizon Cut, Pulse Shape Discrimination Cut). The growth curves generated using this data from 5 to 100 g/cm2 of residual atmosphere in conjunction with the Monte Carlo simulations of the instrument response have been used to obtain the Cosmic Diffuse Gamma-ray (CDG) flux value of (1.28 ± 0.37)×10 -5 photons/cm 2 /s/sr/keV for 0.4 – 0.7 MeV energy range. The 3σ upper limit for CDG flux is 1.8×10-5 photons/cm 2 /s/sr/keV for 0.7-1.5 MeV and 2×10-6 photons/cm2/s/sr/keV for 1.5-2.5 MeV. The analysis of the Crab Nebula from flight observation is underway

BatAnalysis - A Comprehensive Python Pipeline for Swift BAT Survey Analysis

The Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) is a coded-aperture gamma-ray instrument with a large field of view that primarily operates in survey mode when it is not triggering on transient events. The survey data consist of 80- channel detector plane histograms that accumulate photon counts over periods of at least 5 minutes. These histograms are processed on the ground and are used to produce the survey data set between 14 and 195 keV. Survey data comprise >90% of all BAT data by volume and allow for the tracking of long-term light curves and spectral properties of cataloged and uncataloged hard X-ray sources. Until now, the survey data set has not been used to its full potential due to the complexity associated with its analysis and the lack of easily usable pipelines. Here, we introduce the BatAnalysis Python package, a wrapper for HEASoftpy, which provides a modern, opensource pipeline to process and analyze BAT survey data. BatAnalysis allows members of the community to use BAT survey data in more advanced analyses of astrophysical sources, including pulsars, pulsar wind nebula, active galactic nuclei, and other known/unknown transient events that may be detected in the hard X-ray band. We outline the steps taken by the Python code and exemplify its usefulness and accuracy by analyzing survey data of the Crab Nebula, NGC 2992, and a previously uncataloged MAXI transient. The BatAnalysis package allows for ~18 yr of BAT survey data to be used in a systematic way to study a large variety of astrophysical sources.

Synthesis of Si-Fe Chondrule-like Dust Analogues in RF Discharge Plasmas

Chondrules are tiny particles that occur in stony meteorites and are considered as the building blocks of early asteroids and planets. It is believed that they were formed by the fast heating of the dust in the solar nebula. To date, there is no lab-scale experimental study of the formation of chondrules from the initial gas phase precursors following fast heating and crystallisation. The motivation of this work is a pre-trial study of the formation of chnodrule-like particles. The formation of meteorites in the space environment is associated with the aggregation of small particles or molecular clouds under the influence of shock waves or high-energy gas discharges in the solar nebula. In this work, the properties of product formation at the nanoscale-level were investigated using different feedstock materials which are the dominant elements in the meteorite. The structural and morphological properties of the synthesised Si-Fe nanomaterials were analysed by scanning/transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM), and chemical composition was analysed by X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The identification of crystalline phases was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), whereas the presence of an Fe-Si system in the synthesised particles was demonstrated by Mössbauer spectroscopy. The obtained materials were exposed to the relatively high-energy pulsed plasma beam on the substrate with the aim to emulate the possible fast heating and melting of the formed nanoparticles. The formation steps of growing synthetic (engineered) chondro-like particles and nanostructures in laboratory conditions is discussed.

NGC 6302: The Tempestuous Life of a Butterfly

Abstract NGC 6302 (The Butterfly Nebula) is an extremely energetic and rapidly expanding bipolar planetary nebula (PN). If the central source is a single star, then its apparent location in an H-R diagram places it among the most massive, hottest, and presumably rapidly evolving of all central stars of PNe. Our proper motion study of NGC 6302, based on Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 images spanning 11 yr, has uncovered at least four different pairs of uniformly expanding internal lobes ejected at various times and orientations over the past two millennia at speeds ranging from 10–600 km s −1 . In addition, we find a pair of collimated off-axis flows in constant motion at ∼770 ± 100 km s −1 within which bright [Feii]feathersare conspicuous. Combining our results with those previously published, we find that the ensemble of flows has an ionized mass >0.1M ⊙ and its kinetic energy, between 10 46 and 10 48 erg, lies at the upper end of gravity-powered PNe ejection processes such as stellar mergers or mass accretion. We assemble our results into a plausible historical timeline of ejections from the nucleus and suggest that the ejections are powered by gravitational infall.

Searches for Neutrinos from Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory Ultra-high-energy $γ$-Ray Sources Using the IceCube Neutrino Observatory

Galactic PeV cosmic-ray accelerators (PeVatrons) are Galactic sources theorized to accelerate cosmic rays up to PeV in energy. The accelerated cosmic rays are expected to interact hadronically with nearby ambient gas or the interstellar medium, resulting in $γ$-rays and neutrinos. Recently, the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) identified 12 $γ$-ray sources with emissions above 100 TeV, making them candidates for PeVatrons. While at these high energies the Klein–Nishina effect exponentially suppresses leptonic emission from Galactic sources, evidence for neutrino emission would unequivocally confirm hadronic acceleration. Here, we present the results of a search for neutrinos from these $γ$-ray sources and stacking searches testing for excess neutrino emission from all 12 sources as well as their subcatalogs of supernova remnants and pulsar wind nebulae with 11 yr of track events from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. No significant emissions were found. Based on the resulting limits, we place constraints on the fraction of $γ$-ray flux originating from the hadronic processes in the Crab Nebula and LHAASO J2226+6057.

Structural organization of space polymers

Extraterrestrial polymers of glycine with iron have been characterized by mass spectrometry to have a core mass of 1494 Da with dominant rod-like variants at mass to charge ratios of 1567 and 1639 [McGeoch et al., “Meteoritic proteins with glycine, iron and lithium,” arXiv:2102.10700 (2021)]. Several principal macro-structural morphologies are observed in solvent extracts from a chondritic Vigarano class alteration type 3 meteoritic material. The first is an extended sheet of linked (three-legged) triskelia containing the 1494 Da core entity that encloses gas bubbles in the solvent. A second is of fiber-like crystals found here, via x-ray diffraction, to be multiple-walled nanotubes made from a square lattice of the 1494 Da polymer. A third is a dispersion of floating phantom-like short tubes of up to 100 μm length with characteristic angled bends that suggest the influence of a specific underlying protein structure. Here, it is proposed that the angled tubes are the observable result of a space-filling superpolymerization of 1638 Da polymer subunits guided by the tetragonal symmetry of linking silicon bonds. Distorted hexagonal sheets are linked by perpendicular subunits in a three-dimensional hexagonal diamond structure to fill the largest possible volume. This extended very low-density structure is conjectured to have dominated in a process of chemical selection because it captured a maximum amount of molecular raw material in the ultra-low density of molecular clouds or of the proto-solar nebula. This could have led ultimately to the accretion of the earliest planetary bodies.

High-resolution Optical Spectroscopic Observations of Comet 21P/Giacobini–Zinner in Its 2018 Apparition

Comet 21P/Giacobini–Zinner is a peculiar comet from the viewpoints of the chemical and physical properties of its dust grains. We conduct optical high-resolution spectroscopic observations of the comet. The intensity ratios of forbidden oxygen lines (at 557.7, 630.0, and 636.4 nm) and ortho-to-para abundance ratios (OPRs) of water cations (H{sub 2}O{sup +}) and amidogen radicals (NH{sub 2}) are obtained while only the upper limit for {sup 14}N/{sup 15}N in the amidogen radical is restricted. The OPRs of H{sub 2}O{sup +} and NH{sub 2} are similar to those of other comets, although the real meaning of these OPRs is still debated. Based on the observation of the forbidden emission lines of oxygen atoms, it can be concluded that the comet is depleted in CO{sub 2}. In consideration with the depletion in other highly volatile species found in the near-infrared region and the presence of complex organics in comet 21P/Giacobini–Zinner, this comet might form in a warmer region in the solar nebula compared with other comets.

Periodic Eruptive Variability of the Isolated Pre-main-sequence Star V347 Aurigae

V347 Aurigae is associated with the small dark cloud L1438 and appears to be an isolated pre-main-sequence star located at distance d ≈ 200 pc. Multi-epoch, archival photometry reveals periodic brightness variations with amplitude V ≈ 2.0 mag occurring on timescales of ~160 days that have persisted for decades. Regular-cadence, optical imaging of the source with the Zwicky Transient Facility shows that a small reflection nebula illuminated by V347 Aur also fluctuates in brightness, at times fading completely. Multi-epoch, Keck/HIRES data suggests the presence of two distinct spectral components: a prominent emission-line-dominated spectrum with a heavily veiled continuum correlated with the bright photometric state, and an M-type absorption line spectrum associated with quiescence. All spectra exhibit strong Balmer and He i line emission, consistent with accretion, as well as high velocity emission arising from the forbidden transitions of [O i], [N ii], and [S ii] that are generally associated with collimated jets and disk winds. There is no evidence in existing high-dispersion spectroscopy or high-resolution imaging for binarity of V347 Aur. The repeating outburst events are possibly linked to accretion instabilities induced by an undetected companion or a structure within the circumstellar disk that periodically increases the mass accretion rate. V347 Aur is perhaps analogous to an EXor-type variable, though more regularly recurring.

The Role of Early Giant-planet Instability in Terrestrial Planet Formation

The terrestrial planets are believed to have formed by violent collisions of tens of lunar- to Mars-size protoplanets at time t < 200 Myr after the protoplanetary gas disk dispersal (t {sub 0}). The solar system giant planets rapidly formed during the protoplanetary disk stage and, after t {sub 0}, radially migrated by interacting with outer disk planetesimals. An early (t < 100 Myr) dynamical instability is thought to have occurred with Jupiter having gravitational encounters with a planetary-size body, jumping inward by ∼0.2–0.5 au, and landing on its current, mildly eccentric orbit. Here we investigate how the giant-planet instability affected the formation of the terrestrial planets. We study several instability cases that were previously shown to match many solar system constraints. We find that resonances with giant planets help to remove solids available for accretion near ∼1.5 au, thus stalling the growth of Mars. It does not matter, however, whether the giant planets are placed on their current orbits at t {sub 0} or whether they realistically evolve in one of our instability models; the results are practically the same. The tight orbital spacing of Venus and Earth is difficult to reproduce in our simulations, including cases where bodies grow from a narrow annulus at 0.7–1 au, because protoplanets tend to spread radially during accretion. The best results are obtained in the narrow-annulus model when protoplanets emerging from the dispersing gas nebula are assumed to have (at least) the mass of Mars. This suggests efficient accretion of the terrestrial protoplanets during the first ∼10 Myr of the solar system.

Interstellar Extinction, Polarization, and Grain Alignment in the Sh 2-185 (IC 59 and IC 63) Region

Optical and infrared continuum polarization from the interstellar medium is driven by radiative processes aligning the grains with the magnetic field. While a quantitative, predictive theory of radiative alignment torques (RATs) exists and has been extensively tested, several parameters of the theory remain to be fully constrained. In a recent paper, Medan & Andersson showed that the polarization efficiency (and therefore grain alignment efficiency) at different locations in the wall of the Local Bubble (LB) could be modeled as proportional to the integrated light intensity from the surrounding stars and OB associations. Here we probe that relationship at high radiation field intensities by studying the extinction and polarization in the two reflection nebulae IC 59 and IC 63 in the Sh 2-185 H ii region, illuminated by the B0 IV star γ Cassiopeia. We combine archival visual polarimetry with new seven-band photometry in the Vilnius system, to derive the polarization efficiency from the material. We find that the same linear relationship seen in the LB wall also applies to the Sh 2-185 region, strengthening the conclusion from the earlier study.
