Anisotropy Measurements from the Near-Threshold Photodissociation of the N2−NO Complex

We have used velocity map ion imaging to measure the angular anisotropy of the NO (A) products from the photodissociation of the N 2 −NO complex. Our experiment ranged from 108 to 758 cm −1 above the threshold energy to form NO (A)+N 2 (X) products, and these measurements reveal, for the first time, a strong angular anisotropy from photodissociation. At 108 cm −1 above the photodissociation threshold, we observed NO (A) photoproducts recoil preferentially perpendicular to the laser polarization axis with an average anisotropy parameter, β = −0.25; however, as the available energy was increased, the anisotropy increased, and at 758 cm −1 above the threshold energy, we found an average β = +0.28. The observed changes in the angular anisotropy of the NO (A) photoproduct are qualitatively similar to those observed for the photodissociation of the Ar−NO complex and likely result from changes in the region of the excited state potential energy surface accessed during the electronic excitation. At the lowest available energy, we also noted a large contribution from hot band excitation; however, this contribution decreased as the available energy increased. The outsized contribution at the lowest available energy may result from hot bands having better Franck−Condon overlap with the excited electronic state near threshold. Finally, we contrast the experimental center of mass translational energy distribution with a statistical energy distribution determined from phase space theory. The experimental and statistical distributions show pronounced disagreement, particularly at low kinetic energies, with the experimental one showing less dissociation resulting in high rotational levels of the fragments.

Measurement of J/psi Production near Threshold in J/psi -> µ+µ-

This dissertation presents a detailed analysis of J/psi photoproduction near the kinematic threshold in the J/psi -> µ+µ- decay channel, based on data collected by the GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab. The study aims to probe the structure of the proton and the underlying mechanisms of heavy vector quarkonium photoproduction, contributing to a deeper understanding of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) in the non-perturbative regime. The measurement focuses on the total and differential cross-sections of J/psi photoproduction and explores various theoretical models, including two-gluon and three-gluon exchange, open-charm contributions, and potential exotic states like pentaquarks. The experimental setup, featuring a high-precision tagged photon beam and advanced particle identification techniques, allowed for the separation of J/psi events from background processes. The analysis of the J/psi -> µ+µ- channel yields cross-sections that complement previous measurements in the J/psi -> e+e- decay mode, providing new insights into gluon dynamics at low momentum transfer. This work also examines the systematic uncertainties and provides a comprehensive comparison of results with theoretical predictions, highlighting the role of gluon exchange mechanisms in the photoproduction process. The results presented in this dissertation help refine our understanding of proton structure and QCD dynamics, offering a robust dataset for future theoretical and experimental studies in hadronic physics.

Pair Production near Threshold in Pulsar Magnetic Fields

In pulsar polar cap models, curvature radiation gamma rays produce e(+)e(-) pairs in the strong magnetic fields near the surface of the neutron star. While these gamma rays have energies E sub gamma mc(2), they also propagate at very small angles to the fields, such that the threshold condition, E gamma 2mc(2)/sin theta is just barely satisfied when they pair produce. Threshold effects on the pair production attenuation coefficient, which are due to the discreteness of the e(+)e(-) Landau states, must therefore be considered when computing the mean free paths of curvature radiation photons in pulsar magnetic fields. These effects, which are not incorporated in the asymptotic expression for the attenuation coefficient, have some interesting consequences for pulsar models. Since pair production is suppressed near threshold, the photon mean free paths are longer than previously thought. In magnetic fields approximately 6x10 approximately G, the pairs tend to be produced in the ground state Landau level and will not synchrotron radiate. Since synchrotron radiation is an essential ingredient in the electromagnetic cascades which produce low energy pairs above the acceleration region, pulsars with very high magnetic fields may not produce many pairs.

Since pair production is suppressed near threshold, the photon mean free paths are longer than previously thought. In magnetic fields greater than approximately 6 x 10 to the 12th G, the pairs tend to be produced in the ground state Landau level and will not synchrotron radiate. Since synchrotron radiation is an essential ingredient in the eiectromagnetic cascades which produce low energy pairs above the acceleration region, pulsars with very high magnetic fields may not produce many pairs.

A critical study of the crack closure effect on near-threshold fatigue crack growth

Crack closure in the near-crack-tip region has been considered to be an important contribution to the development of a crack-growth threshold for macroscopic cracks. Recent analytical work, however, has suggested that closure well back of the tip may be the controlling factor. In order to check on this possibility, material has been machined away far behind the crack tip in order to eliminate long-range closure. Removal of this material did not eliminate the threshold, but did lower the threshold level by approximately 10 percent for tests conducted on 6.3 mm-thick X7090-T6 powder metallurgy aluminum alloy.

The photoionization cross section of magnesium near threshold.

Description of a method for calculating the photoionization cross section of magnesium, using the technique of configuration reaction in the continuum. The two series of levels which give rise to autoionization near the threshold are explicitly included in the calculation. The described method is a logical extension of the basic technique developed by Atlick and Moore (1966) for similar calculations in application to helium.

Sullivan Process near Threshold and the Pion Gravitational Form Factors

We propose a novel method to experimentally access the gravitational form factors of the charged pion 𝜋 + through the Sullivan process in electron-proton scattering. We demonstrate that the cross sections of 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction and 𝜙 electroproduction near the respective thresholds are dominated by the gluon gravitational form factor of the pion to next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. We predict cross sections for the Electron-Ion Collider and the Jefferson Lab experiments.

Near-Threshold Photoemission from Graphene-Coated Cu(110)

In this article, the brightness of electron beams emitted from photocathode sources plays a critical role in determining the performance of x-ray free-electron lasers and ultrafast electron-diffraction applications. In order to achieve the maximum brightness, the electrons need to be emitted from a photocathode with the lowest-possible mean transverse energy (MTE). Recent investigations have shown that capping a Cu(110) photocathode with a monolayer of graphene can protect the quantum efficiency (QE) from long-term exposure to varying vacuum conditions. However, there have been no studies that investigate the effects that a monolayer of graphene has on the MTE. Here, we report on measurements of a graphene-coated Cu(110) single crystal near the photoemission threshold for room and liquid-nitrogen temperatures. At room temperature, a minimum MTE of 25 meV is measured at 295 nm. At liquid-nitrogen temperatures, a minimum MTE of 9 meV is measured at the photoemission threshold of 290 nm.

First near-threshold measurements of the 13 C($α, n$ 1 ) 16 O reaction for low-background-environment characterization

The modeling of background sources in large volume detection systems requires accurate nuclear cross sections for a variety of reactions. Among the most important are (α,n) on light nuclei, where α particles, up to ≈9 MeV, are produced from the decay of actinides present in trace amounts in detection and structural material. In order to model the neutron energy spectra and production of other secondary particles, the partial cross sections are needed. Yet very little experimental data exists for these partial cross sections because past measurements, hampered by the experimental challenges of neutron detection, have focused mostly on total reaction cross section measurements. Here, in this paper, the partial cross section of the 13 C(α,n 1 ) 16 O reaction is reported for the first time. The measurements were made near the reaction threshold using a high energy resolution helium spectrometer. The measurements show a rapidly increasing cross section, which quickly becomes a significant fraction of the total reaction cross section. Measurements are compared with previous theory estimates and differences of more than an order of magnitude are found. A comparison is made with new total cross section measurements and the current level of consistency is demonstrated.

Measurements of the 27 Al(α,n) Thick Target Yield near Threshold

In this work, we present results from direct measurements of the 27 Al(α,n) thick-target yield from laboratory incident energies E α ≈ 3 to 5 MeV, performed with the 3 HeBF 3 Giant Barrel (HeBGB) neutron detector at the Edwards Accelerator Laboratory. Our measurements have a small energy cadence in order to address discrepancies and sparseness of thick-target-yield data sets existing for this energy region. We find general agreement with existing data sets, including yields derived from cross-section data, while resolving a discrepancy between existing thick-target-yield data sets for E α ≈ 4–5 MeV. However, for E α < 3.5 MeV, our results are substantially lower than previous thick-target-yield data and somewhat larger than yields calculated from existing cross-section data. Our data complete the energy range needed for estimates of the 27 Al(α,n) contribution to neutrino and dark matter detector backgrounds and result in increased viability of 27 Al(α,n) as a plasma diagnostic tool at fusion facilities such as the National Ignition Facility.

Observation of the near-threshold intruder 0 – resonance in 12 Be

A resonant state at $3.21^{+0.12}_{–0.04}$ MeV, located just above the one-neutron separation threshold, was observed for the first time in 12 Be from the 11 Be(d,p) 12 Be one-neutron transfer reaction in inverse kinematics. This state is assigned a spin-parity of 0 – according to the systematics of the level scheme of the N=8 isotones and decay-width analysis. Gamow coupled-channel and Gamow shell-model calculations show the importance of the continuum coupling, which dramatically influences the excitation energy and ordering of low-lying states. Various exotic structures associated with cross-shell intruding configurations in 12 Be and in its isotonic nucleus 11 Li are comparably discussed.
