Characterization of the hardened single line of sight camera at the National Ignition Facility

The hardened single line of sight camera has been recently characterized in preparation for its deployment on the National Ignition Facility. The latest creation based on the pulse-dilation technology leads to many new features and improvements over the previous-generation cameras to provide better quality measurements of inertial confinement fusion experiments, including during high neutron yield implosions. Here, we present the characterization data that illustrate the main performance features of this instrument, such as extended dynamic range and adjustable internal magnification, leading to improved spatial resolution.

National Nuclear Materials Archive (NNMA) - Specimen Selection and Sampling at the Y-12 National Security Complex

Y-12 has made significant progress in FY21 towards National Nuclear Materials Archive (NNMA) program objectives related to the identification, nomination, sampling, sub-sampling and shipment of NNMA materials. Y-12 efforts in FY22 and beyond are anticipated to transition away from material identification and nomination to an emphasis on sampling/sub-sampling and long-term storage of NNMA specimens. Long-term storage efforts will also involve more emphasis on insuring that the nuclear forensics value of NNMA items is guaranteed through appropriate preservation processes.

Investigating Net-Zero Carbon Microgrids for DOE’s National Laboratory Facilities: A Case Study for Idaho National Laboratory

The concept of net-zero carbon microgrids (NZMs) has received significant interest in recent years considering its promises to provide both energy resilience and carbon reduction. This paper investigates the practical constraints of NZM deployment in a government facility, exploring various cases revolving around the objectives of cost, emission, and energy resilience. The technoeconomic results for one of the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) facilities are discussed to identify a practical and economic approach to achieve the net-zero target considering both present and future scenarios. The study shows the carbon reduction, resilience, and economic success of net-zero initiatives are tied directly to the energy portfolio of its electricity provider. The NZMs typically required a hybrid mix of renewable generation and storage assets to maximize onsite clean generation and to provide reliable power during grid outages. Besides supporting the ongoing net-zero effort at INL, this work also provides a framework that can be directly used in other facilities aspiring to become a net zero in the future.
