Coupling and Reactions of Lignols and New Lignin Monomers: A Density Functional Theory Study

This perspective summarizes and compares computational results for the thermodynamics of bond dissociation, coupling, and rearomatization for a number of noncanonical lignin monomer–lignol combinations that have been found to occur experimentally. The noncanonical lignin monomers discussed are tricin, caffeyl alcohol, 5-hydroxyconiferyl alcohol, and piceatannol. Among dimeric combinations, the results for bond dissociation are generally similar, but in cases for which trimers have been reported (tricin-lignol adducts), this value can be quite variable, with stereochemical and structural preferences. Among the adducts examined thus far, the energies associated with quinone methide formation and rearomatization are not dissimilar and would not impede subsequent polymerization. These fundamental studies may help to elucidate how lignin monomers are incorporated into the lignin polymer, provide leads for targeted genetic modification, and be of use in deconstruction for the production of commodity chemicals.

DNCON2_Inter: predicting interchain contacts for homodimeric and homomultimeric protein complexes using multiple sequence alignments of monomers and deep learning

Deep learning methods that achieved great success in predicting intrachain residue-residue contacts have been applied to predict interchain contacts between proteins. However, these methods require multiple sequence alignments (MSAs) of a pair of interacting proteins (dimers) as input, which are often difficult to obtain because there are not many known protein complexes available to generate MSAs of sufficient depth for a pair of proteins. In recognizing that multiple sequence alignments of a monomer that forms homomultimers contain the co-evolutionary signals of both intrachain and interchain residue pairs in contact, we applied DNCON2 (a deep learning-based protein intrachain residue-residue contact predictor) to predict both intrachain and interchain contacts for homomultimers using multiple sequence alignment (MSA) and other co-evolutionary features of a single monomer followed by discrimination of interchain and intrachain contacts according to the tertiary structure of the monomer. We name this tool DNCON2_Inter. Allowing true-positive predictions within two residue shifts, the best average precision was obtained for the Top-L/10 predictions of 22.9% for homodimers and 17.0% for higher-order homomultimers. In some instances, especially where interchain contact densities are high, DNCON2_Inter predicted interchain contacts with 100% precision. We also developed Con_Complex, a complex structure reconstruction tool that uses predicted contacts to produce the structure of the complex. Using Con_Complex, we show that the predicted contacts can be used to accurately construct the structure of some complexes. Our experiment demonstrates that monomeric multiple sequence alignments can be used with deep learning to predict interchain contacts of homomeric proteins.

Ni-catalysed dicarbofunctionalization for the synthesis of sequence-encoded cyclooctene monomers

The properties of polymeric materials can be modulated by factors such as sequence control or functional group modifications. However, the synthesis of new macromolecular scaffolds is limited by the accessibility of structurally diverse monomers. This work describes a one-step, nickel-catalysed synthesis of 5,6-diaryl cyclooctene monomers from the feedstock chemical 1,5-cyclooctadiene. The reaction proceeds in a modular, regio- and diastereoselective fashion, granting access to both homo- and hetero-diaryl cyclooctene monomers that smoothly undergo ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). The resulting 1,2-diaryl-substituted polymers possess sequences with head-to-head styrene dyads that have not been previously explored, giving rise to unique and tunable properties. Density functional theory calculations highlight mechanistic aspects of the nickel-catalysed diarylation reaction and the ruthenium-catalysed ROMP process, revealing a previously unappreciated role of the boronic ester in promoting migratory insertion, which was leveraged to provide enantioinduction.

Incorporation of catechyl monomers into lignins: lignification from the non-phenolic end via Diels–Alder cycloaddition?

Canonical lignification occurs via the coupling of phenolic radicals, in which chain extension can occur only from phenolic ends of growing polymer chains. Radical coupling of catechyl monomers, including caffeyl and 5-hydroxyconiferyl alcohols, gives rise to benzodioxane units in the polymer. Anticipating that a catechol could oxidize to its o-benzoquinone analog under the dehydrogenative (oxidative) conditions of lignification, we examined the possibility that an o-benzoquinone, as the diene component, could also incorporate into lignin via another mechanism, the Diels–Alder cycloaddition reaction. The o-benzoquinone derived from methyl 5-hydroxyvanillate and 4-O-methylconiferyl alcohol served as models for the diene and dienophile, respectively, and produced Diels–Alder products in vitro. Two types of Diels–Alder products were found: (i) when the 1,2-diketone of the quinone acts as the diene in a hetero-Diels–Alder reaction, a benzodioxane structure was produced with a different regiochemistry than the benzodioxane isomer produced via radical coupling; (ii) when the quinone's diene participated in the Diels–Alder reaction, a distinctive oxatricyclo structure was produced. Both features may be used as markers for the occurrence of Diels–Alder reactions in lignification. Examination of natural lignins derived from catechyl monomers, however, did not reveal evidence for such products. The conclusion is that the only significant reactions in lignification are combinatorial radical coupling reactions of the single-electron-oxidized phenolics and that polymer chain extension therefore occurs only from the phenolic end-units even in the special case of plants that utilize catechyl monomers for lignification.

Circular Plastics Technologies: Depolymerization of Polymers Into Parent Monomers

While most commodity plastics were not designed to easily depolymerize, some common plastics can be broken down into their parent monomers in the presence of heat, pressure, catalysts, and/or solvent. Here, we provide a high-level overview of the depolymerization technologies that have been studied and/or scaled as promising monomer-loop recycling processes for selective plastic waste streams. Namely, commodity plastics that are considered unzippable/depolymerizable include polyethylene terephthalate, polyamides, polymethyl methacrylate, and polystyrene. Monomer-loop recycling technologies are one of several pathways toward a circular economy for plastics.

Catalytic Difunctionalization of Cyclic Dienes: Direct Entry to Novel ROMP Monomers

We developed a catalytic platform to convert simple hydrocarbon feedstocks into valuable, tunable materials by leveraging nickel-catalyzed difunctionalization of cyclic dienes to access a novel class of cyclic alkene monomers. These monomers undergo ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) to yield sequence-controlled polymers with defined stereochemistry. Through mechanistic studies and catalyst optimization, we established a scalable, gram-level synthesis for selective diarylation, and expanded the reaction scope to include arylalkylation through rationally tuning the organoboron coupling partner. The resulting polymers were systematically studied to understand how steric, electronic, and stereochemical features influence polymerization behavior and bulk material properties. Functionalized derivatives bearing sulfonated groups were explored as proton-exchange membranes, and chemical recycling pathways were developed to recover monomers from the final materials. This work bridges small-molecule catalysis and macromolecular design, enabling access to tunable, recyclable polymers from abundant hydrocarbon starting materials.

Reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF) is an effective lignin-first biorefining method to extract lignin as a stabilized oil from lignocellulosic biomass. To realize RCF at scale, process modeling has shown that minimizing the use of exogenous organic solvents is critical. To this end, here we investigate the ability of lignin-derived monomers to act as either solvents or cosolvents for RCF. We begin by examining the influence of lignin-derived aromatic compounds (4-propylguaiacol, 4-propylphenol, and propylbenzene) on RCF monomer yields and subsequently extend our analysis to mixtures of 4-propylguaiacol and either methanol or water. We demonstrate that 4-propylguaiacol is an effective solvent for lignin extraction and depolymerization during RCF, especially when used in combination with water as a cosolvent. Cosolvent mixtures of 4-propylguaiacol and water enable up to 81% lignin extraction, monomer yields up to 25 wt %, and postreaction phase separation. However, unlike methanol, water as a cosolvent fails to inhibit aromatic ring hydrogenation when conducted over Ru/C as a catalyst, potentially leading to excess hydrogen consumption in a process utilizing this approach. Nonetheless, these results suggest a promising strategy for eliminating external organic solvents from RCF by utilizing mixtures of lignin-derived compounds and water as alternative extraction solvents.

Reactive Processing of Furan‐Based Monomers via Frontal Ring‐Opening Metathesis Polymerization for High Performance Materials

Frontal ring-opening metathesis polymerization (FROMP) presents an energy-efficient approach to produce high-performance polymers, typically utilizing norbornene derivatives from Diels–Alder reactions. This study broadens the monomer repertoire for FROMP, incorporating the cycloaddition product of biosourced furan compounds and benzyne, namely 1,4-dihydro-1,4-epoxynaphthalene (HEN) derivatives. A computational screening of Diels–Alder products is conducted, selecting products with resistance to retro-Diels–Alder but also sufficient ring strain to facilitate FROMP. The experiments reveal that varying substituents both modulate the FROMP kinetics and enable the creation of thermoplastic materials characterized by different thermomechanical properties. Moreover, HEN-based crosslinkers are designed to enhance the resulting thermomechanical properties at high temperatures (>200 °C). The versatility of such materials is demonstrated through direct ink writing (DIW) to rapidly produce 3D structures without the need for printed supports. This research significantly extends the range of monomers suitable for FROMP, furthering efficient production of high-performance polymeric materials.

Bona fide upcycling strategy of anhydride cured epoxy and reutilization of decomposed dual monomers into multipurpose applications

Waste epoxy materials become an enormous problem to society and the environment. The advantages of epoxy resins derive from their rigid and chemically stable networks, but these qualities also make them difficult to dispose of or recycle. In this work, we demonstrated an efficient degradation of anhydride cured epoxy resin by aminolysis in aminoethanol without using any catalysts. The epoxy resin was fully decomposed at 160 °C in 4 h, resulting in two distinct high purity monomers (HHPA-OH and BPA-OH). To fully realize this upcycling approach, The BPA-OH was used to synthesize a polyurethane coating with an excellent glass transition temperature (88.9 °C), scratch hardness (8H), gouge hardness (6H), adhesive strength (5B), and strong solvent resistance. The HHPA-OH with two hydroxyl groups was reacted with methacrylic anhydride to form a dimethacrylate monomer which was then used as a viable crosslinker for photo-curable 3D printing thermosetting polymer with tensile strength as high as 64 MPa and impact strength of 4.86 kJ/m 2 . This work demonstrates a feasible pathway to convert anhydride cured epoxy waste to new monomeric recyclates for superior polymer products.

Solvent Selection for the Separation of Lignin-Derived Monomers Using the Conductor-like Screening Model for Real Solvents

The separation of desired monomers from a liquid-phase mixture of lignin depolymerization products is necessary to facilitate their upscaling and upgrading for industrial applications. One effective method to separate multiple liquid-phase products is countercurrent chromatography (CCC), which is a common liquid chromatography technique that separates target solutes based on differences in their partitioning in a biphasic solvent system. Effective CCC separation requires the selection of solvent compositions to tune solute partition coefficients. Here, to alleviate the experimental burden of selecting optimal solvent systems, we apply the conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS) method to compute partition coefficients of representative lignin monomers from four currently used depolymerization strategies in standard solvent systems. We further design new ternary and quaternary solvent systems that are predicted to further improve separation efficacy. On the basis of these predicted partition coefficients and empirical solvent selection criteria for CCC measurements, we suggest a range of solvent systems that would be suitable for the effective separation of aromatic lignin-derived products via CCC or similar liquid–liquid extraction methods.

3D Volumetric Structural Hierarchy Induced by Colloidal Polymerization of a Quantum-Dot Ionic Liquid Monomer Conjugate

Hierarchically structured emissive quantum dot (CdS/CdSe) poly(ionic liquid) composites are synthesized through colloidal polymerization within a lyotropic liquid crystal, yielding a solvent-responsive nanoparticle (NP) composite possessing four ordered structural motifs. The composite is prepared by coassembling an amphiphilic ionic liquid (IL) monomer, 3-decyl-1-vinylimidazolium chloride, [C 10 VIm + ][Cl - ], and IL monomer, 3-(10-mercaptodecyl)-1-vinylimidazolium bromide surface-functionalized quantum dots, QD-[SC 10 VIm + ][Br - ], in 30 wt % water. Photo (UV)-initiated free radical polymerization serves to form a colloidal copolymer that collimates pairs of QDs within the core of large cylinders (average diameter = 21 nm and length = 422 nm), as evidenced by ultrasmall-angle X-ray scattering (USAXS). As revealed by continuous wave terahertz multispectral reconstructive 3-D imaging, the subsurface structure along the cylinder axis undergoes dynamic rearrangement between 2D hexagonal and cubic packing. The polymerized ionic liquid sheath surrounding the QDs is composed of concentric hexagonally perforated lamellae (HPL) with an interlamellar repeat distance of 3 nm, as determined by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The encapsulated QDs retain crystallinity (TEM and WAXS) and emission characteristics (photoluminescence spectroscopy, lambda(EM) = 638 nm). Phenomenological time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau calculations verify the mesoscale cylinders arise from the topological constraints imposed by the in-plane perforations of the polymerized ionic liquid as it wraps around the hard (unmalleable) spherical QDs.

Renewable Lactam Monomer for Tunable and Processable Polyamides

Replacement of petroleum-derived monomers with renewable alternatives is an integral part of the sustainable polymer framework. Research in this area involves the search for bio-based or recycled starting materials for traditional polymers, as well as investigations into new materials accessible from renewable feedstocks. Focusing on the latter, we studied the properties of polyamides synthesized from γ-methyl-ε-caprolactam through anionic ring-opening polymerization by an activated monomer mechanism. Here, the amorphous homopolymer presents high stiffness (Young’s modulus, ≈3 GPa), strength (stress at break, ≈80 MPa) and toughness under dry (low humidity) conditions, high ductility (strain at break, ≈1100%) in humid environments, optical clarity, and excellent processability due to its non-crystallizable nature and solubility in common organic solvents. Copolymerization with ε-caprolactam allows tailoring the mechanical properties and crystallinity in the resultant copolymers and provides new opportunities for advanced manufacturing and other applications.

B -Alkyl-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane Reagents Promote Closed-Shell Nickel-Catalyzed Alkylarylation Toward Encoded Cyclooctene Monomers

Access to new tailored monomers is essential to explore unprecedented polymer structures and modulate their properties. In previous work, we disclosed an iteroselective diarylation of 1,5-cyclooctadiene as an attractive platform for preparing diverse cyclooctene monomers; however, it was limited to C(sp 2 ) coupling partners. Established difunctionalization methods with C(sp 3 ) fragments rely on carbon-based radical formation, which is incompatible with 1,5-cyclooctadiene. This work describes a two-electron redox manifold for the nickel-catalyzed alkylarylation of 1,5-cyclooctadiene and discloses B -alkyl-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (alkyl-9-BBN) as an effective transmetalating reagent for maintaining a polar reaction mechanism. The method provides 5,6-alkylarylated cyclooctenes suitable for ring-opening metathesis polymerization to obtain new materials. The properties of these polymers are benchmarked and fine-tuned by variation of coupling partners in the nickel catalysis. Density functional theory calculations revealed that destabilization of the pretransmetalation complex promotes the reactivity of alkyl-9-BBN in transmetalation compared to alkylboronic esters.

Effect of Fatty Acid Polyunsaturation on Synthesis and Properties of Emulsion Polymers Based on Plant Oil-Based Acrylic Monomers

This study demonstrated that polymerization behavior of plant oil-based acrylic monomers (POBMs) synthesized in one-step transesterification reaction from naturally rich in oleic acid olive, canola, and high-oleic soybean oils is associated with a varying mass fraction of polyunsaturated fatty acid fragments (linoleic (C18:2) and linolenic (C18:3) acid esters) in plant oil. Using miniemulsion polymerization, a range of stable copolymer latexes was synthesized from 60 wt.% of each POBM and styrene to determine the impact of POBM chemical composition (polyunsaturation) on thermal and mechanical properties of the resulted polymeric materials. The unique composition of each plant oil serves as an experimental tool to determine the effect of polyunsaturated fatty acid fragments on POBM polymerization behavior and thermomechanical properties of crosslinked films made from POBM-based latexes. The obtained results show that increasing polyunsaturation in the copolymers results in an enhanced crosslink density of the latex polymer network which essentially impacts the mechanical properties of the films (both Young’s modulus and toughness). Maximum toughness was observed for crosslinked latex films made from 50 wt.% of each POBM in the monomer feed.

Direct Insertion Polymerization of Ionic Monomers: Rapid Production of Anion Exchange Membranes

Abstract The limited number of methods to directly polymerize ionic monomers currently hinders rapid diversification and production of ionic polymeric materials, namely anion exchange membranes (AEMs) which are essential components in emerging alkaline fuel cell and electrolyzer technologies. Herein, we report a direct coordination‐insertion polymerization of cationic monomers, providing the first direct synthesis of aliphatic polymers with high ion incorporations and allowing facile access to a broad range of materials. We demonstrate the utility of this method by rapidly generating a library of solution processable ionic polymers for use as AEMs. We investigate these materials to study the influence of cation identity on hydroxide conductivity and stability. We found that AEMs with piperidinium cations exhibited the highest performance, with high alkaline stability, hydroxide conductivity of 87 mS cm −1 at 80 °C, and a peak power density of 730 mW cm −2 when integrated into a fuel cell device.
