CHARGING OF DEVICES BY MICROWAVE POWER BEAMING

A system for providing wireless, charging power and/or primary power to electronic/electrical devices is described whereby microwave energy is employed. Microwave energy is focused by a power transmitter comprising one or more adaptively-phased microwave array emitters onto a device to be charged. Rectennas within the device to be charged receive and rectify the microwave energy and use it for battery charging and/or for primary power. A locator signal generated by the device to be charged is analyzed by the system to determine the location of the device to be charged relative to the microwave array emitters, permitting thc microwave energy to be directly specifically towards the device to be charged. Backscatter detectors respond to backscatter energy reflected off of any obstacle between the device to be charged and the microwave array emitters. Power to any obstructed microwave array emitter is reduced until the obstruction is removed. Optionally, data can be modulated onto microwave energy beams produced by the array emitter and demodulated by the device, thereby providing means of data communication from the power transmitter to the device. Similarly, data can be modulated onto the locator signal and demodulated in the power transmitter, thereby providing means of data communication from the device to the power transmitter.

Using Superconducting Thin Films in Microwave Lines

High temperature superconductors(HTS) and microwaves devices form the ideal partnership. The application of superconductors in microwave devices, components and systems allows the reduction in size, power consumption and insertion loss. The surface resistance of high-Tc superconductors has been found to be two orders of magnitude lower than normal conducting copper materials. The reduction in size and power requirements, which together both lead to a reduction in system mass, coupled with reasonably accessible operating temperatures, suggest that HTS microwave components should find ready application in satellite communications systems. At present, multi- channeling communication networks demand filters with narrow bandwidth in order to allow the available RF frequency spectrum to be partitioned into small frequency bands, -and possible variation of dielectric constant from substrate to substrate is undesirable. Microwave multiplexers demand the fabrication of two identical filters in each channel. Thus, the filter with tuning function is preferable. Tunable filters are the critical component for phased array antennas in order to electronically steer the radiated beam. To fabricate a tunable filter that uses an electric field for operation, one would like a material that provides a large change on dielectric constant for a given electric field, yet has a relatively low tangent in order to minimize the insertion loss of the device. Ferroelectrics have been the materials of choice. Their large dielectric constant sufficiently increases the coupling between microwave resonators and its dependence on electric field provides timability. Development of technology promises to diminish tangent loss. The use of thin ferroelectric films sufficiently decreases insertion losses keeping considerable potential for applications. NASA Lewis Research Center is the one of the leading centers in investigation of superconductors/ferroelectric tunable components for microwave devices. A large number of possible microwave devices were fabricated and tested on the basis of thin film multilayer superconductor-ferroelectric structures. In major cases the systems with edge-coupling scheme were investigated. Dr. Genkin has recently focused on the new potentialities which implements the using of thin ferroelectric films in filters fabricated with end-coupled microstrip lines. Numerical modeling shows that these systems have large potential for application in tunable narrow- and wide-bandpass filters in the frequency range 10-20 GHz. The phase shifter with end-coupled resonant sections was fabricated and tested. Experimental results show large tunability, particular in low voltages. The possible optimization of this structure promises to improve the obtained result and to reach the low level of insertion losses.

Transverse Mode Electron Beam Microwave Generator

An electron beam microwave device having an evacuated interaction chamber to which are coupled a resonant cavity which has an opening between the resonant cavity and the evacuated interaction chamber and an electron gun which causes a narrow beam of electrons to traverse the evacuated interaction chamber. The device also contains a mechanism for feeding back a microwave electromagnetic field from the resonant cavity to the evacuated interaction chamber in such a way as to modulate the direction of propagation of the electron beam, thereby further amplifyjng the microwave electromagnetic field. Furthermore, provision is made for coupling the electromagnetic field out of the electron beam microwave device.

Preliminary design development of 100 KW rotary power transfer device

Contactless power transfer devices for transferring electrical power across a rotating spacecraft interface were studied. A power level of 100 KW was of primary interest and the study was limited to alternating current devices. Rotary transformers and rotary capacitors together with the required dc to ac power conditioning electronics were examined. Microwave devices were addressed. The rotary transformer with resonant circuit power conditioning was selected as the most feasible approach. The rotary capacitor would be larger while microwave devices would be less efficient. A design analysis was made of a 100 KW, 20 kHz power transfer device consisting of a rotary transformer, power conditioning electronics, drive mechanism and heat rejection system. The size, weight and efficiency of the device were determined. The characteristics of a baseline slip ring were presented. Aspects of testing the 100 KW power transfer device were examined. The power transfer device is a feasible concept which can be implemented using presently available technologies.

Improved Dielectric Properties of Heterostructured Ba2.5Sr0.5TiO3 Thin Film Composites for Microwave Dielectric Devices

In the present work we have deposited MgO and Ba(sub 0.5)Sr(sub 0.5)TiO(sub 3)(BST50) thin layers in different sequences to make MgO:BST50 hetero-structured thin films. These films were characterized by X-ray diffraction and Rutherford backscattering technique and found to be highly (100) textured. The figure of merit {(C(sub0)-C(sub v)/(C(sub0-tandelta)} of the hetero-structured films was found to be higher as compared to pure BST50 films measured at 1 MHz frequency with electric field of 25.3 kV/cm. These films were used to make eight element coupled micro-strip phase shifter and characterized in a frequency range of 13-15 GHz. The high frequency figure of merit (kappa factor, defined as the ratio of degree of phase shift per dB loss) measured at around 14 GHz with electric field of 333 kV/cm has been markedly improved (around 64.28 deg/dB for hetero-structured film as compared to 24.65 deg /dB for pure film). Improvement in dielectric properties in a wide frequency range in the MgO:BST are believed to be due to the higher densification of the hetero-structured films.

Microwave characteristics of GaAs MMIC integratable optical detectors

Interdigitated photoconductive detectors were fabricated on microwave device structures, making them easily integratable with Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits (MMIC). Detector responsivity as high as 2.5 A/W and an external quantum efficiency of 3.81 were measured. Response speed was nearly independent of electrode geometry, and all detectors had usable response at frequencies to 6 GHz. A small signal model of the detectors based on microwave measurements was also developed.

Solid state SPS microwave generation and transmission study. Volume 1: Phase 2

The solid state sandwich concept for Solar Power Station (SPS) was investigated. The design effort concentrated on the spacetenna, but did include some system analysis for parametric comparison reasons. The study specifically included definition and math modeling of basic solid state microwave devices, an initial conceptual subsystems and system design, sidelobe control and system selection, an assessment of selected system concept and parametric solid state microwave power transmission system data relevant to the SPS concept. Although device efficiency was not a goal, the sensitivities to design of this efficiency were parametrically treated. Sidelobe control consisted of various single step tapers, multistep tapers, and Gaussian tapers. A preliminary assessment of a hybrid concept using tubes and solid state is also included. There is a considerable amount of thermal analysis provided with emphasis on sensitivities to waste heat radiator form factor, emissivity, absorptivity, amplifier efficiency, material and junction temperature.

Current Status of Thin Film (Ba,Sr) TiO3 Tunable Microwave Components for RF Communications

The performance of proof-of-concept ferroelectric microwave devices has been moving steadily closer to the level needed for satellite and other rf communications applications. This paper will review recent progress at NASA Glenn in developing thin film Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3 tunable microwave components for these applications. Phase shifters for phased array antennas, tunable filters and tunable oscillators employing microstrip and coupled microstrip configurations will be presented. Tunabilities, maximum dielectric constants, and phase shifter parameters will be discussed (e.g., coupled microstrip phase shifters with phase shift over 200 deg. at 18 GHz and a figure of merit of 74.3 deg./dB). Issues of postannealing, Mn-doping and Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3 growth on sapphire and alumina substrates will be covered. The challenges of incorporating these devices into larger systems, such as yield, variability in phase shift and insertion loss, and protective coatings will also be addressed.
