Insights into Dopant-Mediated Tuning of Silica-Supported Mo Metal Centers for Enhanced Olefin Metathesis

Here, we show that the electronic environment around active Mo centers supported on mesoporous silicates can be tuned by the addition of transition metals creating highly dispersed bimetallic catalysts that display enhanced activity for ethylene + 2-butene metathesis to propylene. The bimetallic catalysts are prepared by incorporating electrophilic Lewis acid metals (M) such as Nb, Ta, Zr, or Hf as dopant promoters into mesoporous KIT-6 supports using a one-pot sol–gel technique followed by impregnation of the Mo species. All the bimetallic Mo/M-KIT-6 catalysts display better activity than monometallic Mo/KIT-6 catalyst (28.7 ± 1.1 mmol (mol Mo s ) –1 ), with (Mo/Nb-KIT-6) catalysts exhibiting maximum propylene formation rates (54.2 ± 0.5 mmol (mol Mo s ) –1 ) at an identical Mo loading.

Chemical Activation of Frontal Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

In this study, we present an innovative approach to frontal ring-opening metathesis polymerization (FROMP) through chemical activation. By locally concentrating Grubbs-type initiators, we accelerate exothermic polymerization at the activation site. Sufficient thermal energy initiates a polymerization front that travels through the remainder of the sample even with reduced initiator concentrations in the bulk resin. Initiation location and timing are controlled by adjusting the initiator reactivity, the properties of the transport solvent, and the air–resin interface. Our technique enables multipoint front activation, either through synchronized injection or by timing the relative reactivity of various initiators. This accessible method of chemical activation enables on-demand production of polymer and composite materials using only the thermal energy generated by the reaction, removing the need for external power sources and enabling deployment in remote or infrastructure-limited environments.

One Step Block-like Copolymers from an Upcycled Monomer Using Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

Block-like copolymers can be readily synthesized in one step using monomers with widely separated reactivity ratios. Here, we show that trans,trans,trans-1,5,9-cyclododecatriene (CDT), produced from polybutadiene via cyclodepolymerization (CDP), undergoes gradient copolymerization via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) with a selected norbornene monomer to produce a block-like copolymer that exhibits bulk nanophase separation and excellent thermomechanical performance. These data highlight a new ROMP copolymerization system with a sharp compositional drift and introduce a simple pathway to convert waste plastic into a valuable building block for high-value thermoplastic materials.

The Synthesis and Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization of Energetic Norbornene Materials

Energetic norbornenes are promising candidates toward the development of new energetic polymers due to the synthetic versatility of norbornene ring-opening metathesis polymerizations used in commercial applications. We report the synthesis of two energetic norbornene materials that can be made in two steps with modest yields, containing either trinitroethanol or fluorodinitroethanol substituents. The norbornene monomers were then polymerized, and the polymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), contact angle measurements, and proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies ( 1 H and 13 C{ 1 H} NMR). Additionally, small-scale safety data consisting of electrostatic discharge (ESD), friction (FS), and impact (IS) sensitivities were measured for the norbornene monomers and their resulting polymers. These analyses revealed that energetic norbornene materials are relatively insensitive and have densities comparable to that of TNT (1.47–1.81 g·cm –3 ).

Furthermore, they demonstrate excellent catalytic performances in asymmetric olefin metathesis with high enantioselectivities (up to 92% ee). Preliminary mechanistic insights provided by DFT models highlight the origin of the enantioselectivity.

Accelerating σ-Bond Metathesis at Sn(II) Centers

Molecular main-group hydride catalysts are attractive as cheap and Earth-abundant alternatives to transition-metal analogues. In the case of the latter, specific steric and electronic tuning of the metal center through ligand choice has enabled the iterative and rational development of superior catalysts. Analogously, building a deeper understanding of electronic structure-activity relationships for molecular main-group hydrides should facilitate the development of superior main-group hydride catalysts. Herein we report a modular Sn–Ni bimetallic system in which we systematically vary the ancillary ligand on Ni, which in turn tunes the Sn center. This tuning is probed using Sn L 1 XAS as a measure of electron density at the Sn center. We demonstrate that increased electron density at Sn centers accelerates the rate of σ-bond metathesis, and we employ this understanding to develop a highly active Sn-based catalyst for the hydroboration of CO 2 using pinacolborane. Additionally, we demonstrate that engineering London dispersion interactions within the secondary coordination sphere of Sn allows for further rate acceleration. Furthermore, these results show that the electronics of main group catalysts can be controlled without the competing effects of geometry perturbations, and that this manifests in substantial reactivity differences.

Conjugated Imine Polymer Synthesized via Step‐Growth Metathesis for Highly Stable Silicon Nanoparticle Anodes in Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract This work reports a new method to synthesize polyphenylmethanimine (polyPMI) as a linear or a hyperbranched, conjugated polymer using an aldehyde‐imine metathesis reaction. This work details the reaction mechanisms of this polymerization by characterizing a red‐shift in its absorption spectrum as polymer conjugation length increases and verifies that this optical shift results from extended π‐condensation using density functional theory. This new synthetic approach provides a polymer that can potentially be depolymerized for facile recyclability and is compatible with air‐ and water‐sensitive chemistries. As an example of the utility of this new approach, this work demonstrates that this polymer can be directly grown on silicon nanoparticles to create silicon anodes for lithium‐ion batteries with a high degree of electrochemical interfacial passivation. These silicon anodes exhibit Coulombic efficiencies above 99.9% and can accommodate silicon nanoparticle expansion and contraction during lithiation and delithiation as demonstrated by stable reversible capacities for 500 cycles. Finally, this work demonstrates that polyPMI facilitates the formation of a lithium fluoride rich solid electrolyte interphase that remains chemically and mechanically stable after long term cycling.

Ring-opening metathesis polymerization of cobaltocenium derivative to prepare anion exchange membrane with high ionic conductivity

Abstract An efficient method to incorporate a cobaltocenium cation into polymers for anion exchange membranes is described. A cobaltocenium-containing norbornene derivative has been synthesized. It can be homopolymerized, or copolymerized with norbornene, by ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) with quantitative yields. The composition of the random copolymers can be precisely controlled by adjusting the feed ratio of the monomers. Additionally, the resulting polymers can be cast into thin robust membranes. The morphology of the membranes is characterized by humidity controlled SAXS and TEM, showing disordered interconnected cobaltocenium domains. The high ionic conductivity suggests that such membranes are good candidates for anion exchange membranes.

Synergistic Combination of Living Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization and Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization to Synthesize Structurally Tailored and Engineered Macromolecular Networks

Structurally tailored and engineered macromolecular (STEM) networks are attractive materials for soft robotics, stretchable electronics, tissue engineering, and 3D printing due to their tunable properties. To date, STEM networks have been synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) or the combination of reversible addition–fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization and ATRP. RAFT polymerization could have limited selectivity with ATRP inimer sites that can participate in radical-transfer processes. On the other hand, living ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) can produce a polymeric network with latent ATRP initiator sites in high selectivity. Herein, for the first time, we report the syntheses of STEM zero-generation (STEM-0) networks using a monomer, a cross-linker, and an ATRP/ROMP inimer via living ROMP, followed by their modification using a second monomer via ATRP to synthesize STEM first-generation (STEM-1) networks. The mechanical property and swelling capacity analyses of these networks were carried out. A change in mechanical properties and swelling capacity of these networks was observed due to their structural modification.

Percolated Ionic Aggregate Morphologies and Decoupled Ion Transport in Precise Sulfonated Polymers Synthesized by Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

Here, we describe a set of precise single-ion conducting polymers that form self-assembled percolated ionic aggregates in glassy polymer matrices and have decoupled transport of metal cations. These precise single-ion conductors (SICs), synthesized by a scalable ring-opening metathesis polymerization, consist of a polyethylene backbone with a sulfonated phenyl group pendant on every fifth carbon and are fully neutralized by a counterion X + (Li + , Na + , or Cs + ). Experimental X-ray scattering measurements and fully atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are in good agreement. The MD simulations show that the ionic groups nanophase separate from the polymer backbone to form percolating ionic aggregates. Using graph theory, we find that within the Li + - and Na + -neutralized polymers the percolated aggregates exhibit planar and ribbon-like configurations at intermediate length scales, while the percolated aggregates within the Cs + -neutralized polymers are more isotropic. Electrical impedance spectroscopy measurements show that the ionic conductivities exhibit Arrhenius behavior, with conductivities of 10 –7 to 10 –6 S/cm at 180 °C. In the MD simulations, the cations move between sulfonate groups in the percolated aggregates, larger ions travel further, and overall cations travel further than the polymer backbones, indicating a decoupled ion-transport mechanism. Thus, the percolated ionic aggregates in these polymers can serve as pathways to facilitate decoupled ion motion through a glassy polymer matrix.

Simple Monomers for Precise Polymer Functionalization During Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

Controlling the monomer sequence of synthetic polymers is a grand challenge in polymer science. Conventional sequence control has been achieved in dispersed polymers by exploiting the kinetic tendencies of monomers and their order of addition. While the sequence of blocks in multiblock copolymers can be readily tuned using sequential addition of monomers (SAM), control over the sequence distribution is eroded as the targeted block size approaches a single monomer unit (i.e., X n ~ 1) due to the stochastic nature of chain-growth reactions. Thus, unique monomers are needed to ensure precise single additions. Herein, we investigate common classes of cyclic olefin monomers for ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) to identify monomers for single unit addition during sequential monomer addition synthesis. Through careful analysis of polymerization kinetics, we find that easily synthesized oxanorbornene imide monomers are suitable for single-addition reactions. With the identified monomers, we demonstrate the synthesis of multiblock copolymers containing up to three precise functionalization sites and singly cross-linked four-armed star copolymers. In conclusion, we envision that expanded kinetic analyses of monomer reactivities in ROMP reactions will enable novel polymer synthesis capabilities such as the autonomous synthesis of sequence-defined polymers or one-shot multiblock copolymer syntheses.

Backbone-Photodegradable Polymers by Incorporating Acylsilane Monomers via Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

Materials capable of degradation upon exposure to light hold promise in a diverse range of applications including biomedical devices and smart coatings. Despite the rapid access to macromolecules with diverse compositions and architectures enabled by ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), a general strategy to introduce facile photodegradability into these polymers is lacking. Here, we report copolymers synthesized via ROMP that can be degraded by cleaving the backbone in both solution and solid states under irradiation with a 52 W, 390 nm Kessil LED to generate heterotelechelic low-molecular-weight fragments. To the best of our knowledge, this work represents the first instance of the incorporation of acylsilanes into a polymer backbone. Mechanistic investigation of the degradation process supports the intermediacy of an α-siloxy carbene, formed via a 1,2-photo Brook rearrangement, which undergoes insertion into water followed by cleavage of the resulting hemiacetal.

Using Data Science Tools to Reveal and Understand Subtle Relationships of Inhibitor Structure in Frontal Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

The rate of frontal ring-opening metathesis polymerization (FROMP) using the Grubbs generation II catalyst is impacted by both the concentration and choice of monomers and inhibitors, usually organophosphorus derivatives. Herein we report a data-science-driven workflow to evaluate how these factors impact both the rate of FROMP and how long the formulation of the mixture is stable (pot life). Using this workflow, we built a classification model using a single-node decision tree to determine how a simple phosphine structural descriptor (V bur-near ) can bin long versus short pot life. Additionally, we applied a nonlinear kernel ridge regression model to predict how the inhibitor and selection/concentration of comonomers impact the FROMP rate. Furthermore, the analysis provides selection criteria for material network structures that span from highly cross-linked thermosets to non-cross-linked thermoplastics as well as degradable and nondegradable materials.

Polyalkenamers as Drop-In Additives for Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization: A Promising Upcycling Paradigm

Here we report a distinct strategy to upcycle waste polyalkenamers such as polybutadiene into new, performance-advantaged materials by using them as drop-in additives for ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). The polyalkenamers serve as competent chain-transfer agents in ROMPs of common classes of cyclic olefin monomers, facilitating good molecular weight control, allowing low Ru catalyst loadings, and enabling efficient incorporation of the polyalkenamer into the synthesized polymeric material. We successfully demonstrate ROMP using model polyalkenamers and translate these learnings to leverage commercial polybutadiene and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) as chain transfer agents for ROMP copolymerizations. Critically, our strategy is shown to be highly efficient and operationally simple, quantitatively incorporating the polyalkenamer and inheriting aspects of its thermomechanical performance. Our results highlight a promising pathway for the upcycling of polyalkenamers and provide an alternative to existing deconstruction and functional upcycling strategies.

Active light-controlled frontal ring-opening metathesis polymerization

Frontal ring-opening metathesis polymerization (FROMP) is a promising energy-efficient approach to fabricate polymeric materials. Recent advances have demonstrated FROMP for diverse applications, including additive manufacturing, composites, and foams. However, the characteristic properties of the front are currently controlled primarily by varying the resin composition or the environmental conditions. In this work we present an approach to control FROMP of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) using photochemical methods. A photobase generator is used to inhibit FROMP of DCPD with UV light while a photosensitizer and co-initiator are used to accelerate FROMP with blue light, enabling orthogonal active photocontrol of front velocity. In addition, photoinhibition-enabled lithographic patterning of frontal polymerizations is demonstrated. Frontal polymerizations are spatially controlled, redirected, and even split into diverging fronts. This work establishes a foundation for advanced control of frontal polymerizations, enabling innovation in traditional and additive manufacturing, as well as emerging processes like morphogenic manufacturing.
