Doped Chiral Polymer Metamaterials

Some implementations provide a composite material that includes a first material and a second material. In some implementations, the composite material is a metamaterial. The first material includes a chiral polymer (e.g., crystalline chiral helical polymer, poly-.gamma.-benzyl-L-glutamate (PBLG), poly-L-lactic acid (PLA), polypeptide, and/or polyacetylene). The second material is within the chiral polymer. The first material and the second material are configured to provide an effective index of refraction value for the composite material of 1 or less. In some implementations, the effective index of refraction value for the composite material is negative. In some implementations, the effective index of refraction value for the composite material of 1 or less is at least in a wavelength of one of at least a visible spectrum, an infrared spectrum, a microwave spectrum, and/or an ultraviolet spectrum.

Composite Reflective Absorptive IR-Blocking Filters Embedded in Metamaterial Antireflection Coated Silicon

Infrared (IR)-blocking filters are crucial for controlling the radiative loading on cryogenic systems and for optimizing the sensitivity of bolometric detectors in the far-IR. We present a new IR filter approach based on a combination of patterned frequency-selective structures on silicon and a thin (2575 micron thick) absorptive composite based on powdered reststrahlen absorbing materials. For a 300 K blackbody, this combination reflects approximately 50% of the incoming light and blocks greater than.99.8% of the total power with negligible thermal gradients and excellent low-frequency transmission. This allows a reduction in the IR thermal loading to negligible levels in a single cold filter. These composite filters are fabricated on silicon substrates, which provide excellent thermal transport laterally through the filter and ensure that the entire area of the absorptive filter stays near the bath temperature. A metamaterial antireflection coating cut into these substrates reduces in-band reflections to below 1%, and the in-band absorption of the powder mix is below 1% for signal bands below 750 GHz. This type of filter can be directly incorporated into silicon refractive optical elements.

Chapter 5: Mechanical metamaterials and topological soft matter: allostery and auxetics--distributed energetics and mutation upon deployment

At the suggestion of NASA’s Physical Science Research Program in the Space Life and Physical Science Research and Application Division, Paul Chaikin, Noel Clark, and Sidney Nagel organized a focus session and workshop for the 2020 American Physical Society (APS) March meeting under the auspices of the Division of Soft Matter. Three overarching themes emerged from the workshop and are presented with additional details: • Machines made out of machines • Scalable self-sustaining ecosystems • Active materials and metamaterials This report lays out only some of the potential directions for soft matter dynamics over the next two decades. It also lays out the role that gravity plays in the organization of the basic building blocks of matter. Not only will research on soft matter have tremendous application towards understanding its behavior in our terrestrial environment, but also potentially in other NASA programs such as planetary science, exploration, robotics, etc. Attached is a White Paper for the Decadal Survey that consists of an extended Title along with the previous Introduction and Chapter 2.5 from NASA/CP-20205010493.

Terahertz Chiral Metamaterials Enabling Broadband Polarization Conversion Using Polarization Guiding Effect

Polarization control plays a vital role in terahertz (THz) photonics, enabling a wide range of applications from imaging and spectroscopy to sensing and wireless communication. However, conventional polarization control methods at THz frequencies are limited by narrow operational bandwidths and excessive absorption losses. In this work, we present a broadband THz polarization control based on the polarization guiding effect. We design and fabricate a THz polarization rotator capable of rotating incident linear polarization by 90°. The device consists of 24 twistingly stacked silicon–air metagrating layers that introduce a large degree of form birefringence, with each metagrating layer being 280 µm thick and sequentially twisted by 3.75°. Numerical simulations using the Berreman 4 × 4 method predict broadband operation of the device. Experimental validation using THz time-domain spectroscopy confirms efficient and broadband 90° polarization rotation from 0.2 to 1.25 THz. Based on this concept, we further propose THz Q-plates for the generation of broadband structured vector beams with radial and azimuthal polarization states. This work offers a scalable, material-agnostic platform for advanced THz polarization manipulation and vector beam engineering, opening new pathways for next-generation THz photonic devices.

Magnetic metamaterials by ion-implantation

We present a method for the additive fabrication of planar magnetic nanoarrays with minimal surface roughness. Synthesis is accomplished by combining electron-beam lithography, used to generate nanometric patterned masks, with ion implantation in thin films. By implanting 56 Fe + ions, we are able to introduce magnetic functionality in a controlled manner into continuous Pd thin films, achieving 3D spatial resolution down to a few tens of nanometers. Our results demonstrate the application of this technique in fabricating square artificial spin ice lattices, which exhibit well-defined magnetization textures and interactions among the patterned magnetic elements.

Investigating Holey Metamaterial Effects in Terahertz Traveling-Wave Tube Amplifier

Applying subwavelength holes to a novel traveling-wave tube amplifier is investigated. Plans to increase the on-axis impedance are discussed as well as optimization schemes to achieve this goal. Results suggest that an array of holes alone cannot significantly change the on-axis electric field in the vicinity of the electron beam. However, models of a beam tunnel with corrugated walls show promise in maximizing the amplifier s on-axis impedance. Additional work is required on the subject, and suggestions are made to determine research directions.

Microwave Nondestructive Evaluation of Dielectric Materials with a Metamaterial Lens

A novel microwave Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) sensor was developed in an attempt to increase the sensitivity of the microwave NDE method for detection of defects small relative to a wavelength. The sensor was designed on the basis of a negative index material (NIM) lens. Characterization of the lens was performed to determine its resonant frequency, index of refraction, focus spot size, and optimal focusing length (for proper sample location). A sub-wavelength spot size (3 dB) of 0.48 lambda was obtained. The proof of concept for the sensor was achieved when a fiberglass sample with a 3 mm diameter through hole (perpendicular to the propagation direction of the wave) was tested. The hole was successfully detected with an 8.2 cm wavelength electromagnetic wave. This method is able to detect a defect that is 0.037 lambda. This method has certain advantages over other far field and near field microwave NDE methods currently in use.
